The Losers' Club From It
No disrespect to the teens and preteens of Hawkins, Ind., but it was seven misfit, bullied kids from Derry, Maine, who were the horror squad we most wanted to be this past year. Terrorized by their peers and their own personal demons (in addition to one scary-ass clown with an abnormal penchant for white face powder), the members of the Losers' Club never lost faith in their commitment to one another, all the while learning to accept their own and one another's foibles and failings in a way that the adults around them (including their own parents) could not. It packed a wild, fun, Pennywise-filled terror ride. But no movie this past year did a better job of framing the horror of adolescence and the type of courage and camaraderie needed to overcome the obstacles that your own biology throws at you without your permission. These Losers are my heroes.
