- The Boston Society of Film Critics was formed in 1981 to make "Boston's unique critical perspective heard on a national and international level by awarding commendations to the best of the year's films and filmmakers and local film theaters and film societies that offer outstanding film programming."

- This year's awards are dedicated to the memory of David Brudnoy, one of the society's founding members and gracious host of the meetings for many years.
2005
- This year's awards are dedicated to the memory of Robin Dougherty, a former Boston Phoenix film critic who passed away this summer.
2008
- For the 2007/8 awards season the Society celebrates its first ever awards ceremony. Formerly the award winners were just announced formally.
