It’s certainly impressive that some of Hollywood’s highest grossing stars are those who are willing to lend their talents to a vast variety of projects within many genres. While the commitment that actors like Samuel L. Jackson or Morgan Freeman show when making films like that vary drastically in terms of success, it's equally impressive if an actor chooses to prioritize quality over quantity.

Movies encompass the length and breadth of the human experience, making any Best Of list hopelessly subjective. Comparing, say, The Silence of the Lambs to Fantasia to determine which one is "better" actively insults both movies. Similarly, scholarly lists — like the British Film Institute's once-a-decade model which sets the pace on this front — tend to overlook "base" genres like horror and comedy, which often prove more influential. If a reader isn't already inclined to seek arthouse fare like The 400 Blows or The Passion of Joan of Arc, their inclusion in a given list means very little.
Influential films, however, can be measured a little more objectively, as well as encompassing popular movies that find the sweet spot between art and commerce. While it can be difficult to separate the true game-changers from the flashes in the pan, time has a way of revealing. Below is a list of the greatest films — subjective,...

The following contains spoilers for Immaculate, now playing in theaters. It also contains a mention of sexual assault and infanticide.
2024 has been an interesting year in terms of religious horrors. The Deliver Us ending focused on a woman giving birth to both the Antichrist and Messiah. It offered a new take on Rosemary's Baby that was very thought-provoking, and reiterated the message that sometimes people do have the opportunity to break the mold and not follow a set path.
Sydney Sweeney's Immaculate treads similar ground, as it focuses on a sinister pregnancy at an Italian convent. As with many movies today, fans who haven't seen it yet are left wondering if there is a post-credits stinger looking to expand this flick into other movies.

Jake Gyllenhaal Once Admitted Putting A Lot Of Pressure On Himself While Filming Spider-Man: Far From Home (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Road House star Jake Gyllenhaal, born in the Gyllenhaal family, has lived up to the family’s legacy. But there were times when he got overwhelmed while filming, and something similar happened during Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. He appeared in the role of Mysterio and heavily impacted the life of Tom Holland’s character, Peter Parker. The Oscar-nominated actor is known for going the extra mile for his roles.
He lost around 30 pounds for his role in Nightcrawler. However, after that, he decided not to get engrossed in a role further, and the primary reason for it might be his Oscar snub. He was not nominated for the Academy Awards for that part. On the personal front, Jake is the son of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner.

Only 9 actors have appeared in multiple billion-dollar movies from separate franchises back-to-back. Samuel L. Jackson leads with 10 billion-dollar movies in total; Benicio del Toro and Andy Serkis are among the exclusive group. History-making actors like James Earl Jones and Lupita Nyong'o have also accomplished this feat.
While billion-dollar movies are slowly becoming more common, there are still very few actors who have worked on different billion-dollar franchises, let alone released two movies to cross that threshold back to back. In 1998, Titanic became the first movie to ever earn more than a billion dollars on its release. However, it took 5 more years for another movie to reach that same milestone, with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King becoming the second in 2003.

Born in 1963, Quentin Tarantino redefined independent cinema with his pulpy mix of violence, dark humor and pop culture, crafting several modern classics. But before he made history, he made a living as a video store clerk while penning spec scripts. He made his directorial debut with “Reservoir Dogs” (1992), a “Rashomon”-esque crime drama about a botched jewel heist. Two more of his scripts, “True Romance” (1993) and “Natural Born Killers” (1994), were later produced by Tony Scott and Oliver Stone, respectively.
He hit the Oscar jackpot just two years after his filmmaking debut with “Pulp Fiction” (1994), a multi-narrative, self-referential pastiche about a group of criminals whose lives intersect in surprising ways. After winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes, the indie hit went on to collect a screenwriting prize for Tarantino and Roger Avery, earning nominations in Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (John Travolta), Best Supporting Actor (Samuel L. When Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” was released in the fall of 2012, one of the nagging complaints — for an otherwise heralded film — related to its ending. Namely, it had too many.
Roger Ebert, in his four-star review, succinctly implied the picture should’ve wrapped before President Lincoln’s assassination. Samuel L. Jackson felt similarly, though he didn’t mince words about it. While it would be a stretch to say the contentious closing scenes chronicling Lincoln’s murder cost the film any of its Oscars — including losses in Best Editing, Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture — it’s exactly the type of first-thought quibble voters would use as an excuse for choosing their preferred nominee.
Though plenty of pundits backed the chosen ending and “Lincoln’s” sweeping acclaim and staggering box office spoke to its overall appreciation ($275 million for a 150-minute period drama? Martin Scorsese would kill a flower moon...

We got a Disney+ series that showed Sam’s hesitance to pick up the mantle of Captain America and the history that comes with it. A Brave New World Order
First up, a name change. This Marvel Comics adaptation was initially revealed to be Captain America: New World Order. If you’re a wrestling fan like me, you had visions of Sam decked out in his new Captain America gear, fighting off Hulk Hogan clad in his...

Ryan Gosling is a popular fan choice to play Nova in the MCU, with recent rumors suggesting he may have joined the franchise. Development on an MCU Nova project has been confirmed, setting the stage for Nova's potential debut. The MCU could introduce both Richard Rider and Sam Alexander versions of Nova, potentially making Gosling's portrayal ideal for the adult Rider.
With Nova possibly on the way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one actor has become the most popular fancast to play the hero, and recent developments could lead to that scenario becoming true. Nova's superhero origins in Marvel Comics could be easily explained by one of the McU's best movies: Avengers: Infinity War. While Josh Brolin's Thanos was shown to get almost all of the Infinity Stones on screen in his quest to fill the Infinity Gauntlet in the Avengers movie, Thanos' destruction of Xandar to leave the...

X-Men ’97
Indeed, many of the details from 1992’s X-Men: The Animated Series were borrowed for the sequel. Even before the producer was brought on board, the specifics were already laid down so fans can expect a lot of similarities with its predecessor.
X-Men ’97 Director On Getting Original Cast On Board
The main goal of X-Men ’97 is to make viewers feel like they are watching the next episode of The Animated Series, so that’s why from the animation style down to the voice cast, everything has to match. “That was one of those decisions that was just kind of already made.

One of the most exciting "Star Wars" projects in the works -- as in, one that we know for sure will actually get released and not canceled then maybe uncanceled -- is "Star Wars: The Acolyte." For one, it is finally giving us a "Star Wars" title with not just two but a whole bunch of lightsaber users. The "Acolyte" trailer alone features an incredible shot of lightsabers igniting, echoing the all-time great "Star Wars" moment where Mace Windu declares, "This party's over."
That's because "The Acolyte" is set during the High Republic era of "Star Wars," a time of peace and prosperity for the galaxy and Jedi Order. During this period, the Jedi were more diverse, worked distinctly from the Old Republic, and served as actual diplomats (as opposed to being a corrupt and dying police force à la the prequel trilogy).
The trailer makes two things clear about the plot of "The Acolyte.

A detective who works on a serial killer case, but despite their best efforts, can't catch the killer will likely always be haunted by the images of the dead and the feeling of failure. But for Samuel L. Jackson in Damaged, he'll get a second chance to track down the murderer. We've seen this detective trope dozens of times on television. But the new trailer for the film promises a few twists and turns, which are bound to make it stand out from the crowd.

The Acolyte won't retcon Sith history from The Phantom Menace, even as it explores the Jedi Order in the High Republic Era. The red lightsaber in the trailer doesn't mean the Jedi knew the Sith weren't extinct, as the Sith were undercover. The prequel trilogy's perception of the Sith may not be entirely accurate, which The Acolyte will show by shedding new light without retconning history.
Star Wars: The Acolyte, Star Wars' newest Disney+ TV show, will officially release with a two-episode premiere on June 4, 2024, and, despite rampant speculation, the show will not be retconning the history of the Sith from Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. As one of the most thrilling inclusions in the lineup of Star Wars' upcoming TV shows, The Acolyte will be set in the Star Wars High Republic Era and explore the Jedi Order prior to the events of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

"He's toying with you, Glen." Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for the film Damaged, a mysterious serial killer action thriller from the UK. It's now set for release in the US in early April both on VOD and in theaters. The film follows Dan Lawson, a Chicago detective, who travels to Scotland to link up with Scottish Det. Glen Boyd, following the resurgence of a serial killer who's crimes match an unsolved case that he also looked into five years previous in Chicago. What is the connection? Samuel L. Jackson stars as Lawson, and Scottish actor Gianni Capaldi co-stars as Boyd, also credited on co-writing the screenplay. The official synopsis asks: "How do you catch a brilliant monster?" So this is Silence of the Lambs again? The cast also includes Vincent Cassel, Laura Haddock, John Hannah, Katie Dickie, and Brian McCardie. This doesn't look as bad as it could,...

The Gentlemen tells the story of an American expatriate running a cannabis empire in London, mixing action and comedy in a slick crime story. Director Guy Ritchie's style perfectly complements this story, but there are many more movies out there like The Gentlemen. Movies like Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels share some of the same elements, exploring the stories of colorful collections of characters who eventually come together to tell a wider crime story.

Raoul Peck, the filmmaker behind Academy Award-nominated documentary I Am Not Your Negro, is in production on his next feature doc — an investigation into the 2021 assassination of Haitian president Jovenel Moise, tentatively titled, The Hands That Held the Knives.
Over two years in the making, with unprecedented access to many of those involved, and including secret filming in Haiti’s prisons and an unexpected encounter with a fugitive who was an eyewitness to the murder, Peck’s film taking him back to his home country will be a documentary thriller, in the tradition of Graham Greene or John Le Carré.
His investigation takes him deep into the politics of Haiti, its relationship with the United States, and the corrupt business empires and criminal organizations — dealing drugs and contraband throughout the Caribbean, using weapons trafficked from the U.S. — which have now rendered the country a hellscape for its citizens. The creators of the upcoming X-Men ’97 series want to clarify that their decision to make Morph a nonbinary individual does not stem from the woke culture of modern society but rather from the figure’s own skills and powers.

Clint Eastwood and Quentin Tarantino's mutual respect stems from shared influences like Sergio Leone. Eastwood endorsed Pulp Fiction, calling the response to the film "amazing." Tarantino intended Kill Bill to echo Eastwood's Dollars Trilogy.
Despite the fact that Clint Eastwood is more than 30 years older than Quentin Tarantino, the two seem like contemporaries. This connection began in 1992, when the release of Eastwood’s Oscar-winning Western film Unforgiven heralded a career renaissance for the filmmaker, while Tarantino made his feature directorial debut with the crime film Reservoir Dogs, which revealed the director to be a distinctive and exciting new voice in cinema.

Harrison Ford is one of the most talented and respected actors in Hollywood. Having starred in some of the most well-known franchises of all time, he has injected himself into the very bones of the film industry as a whole. If there was a film that starred him in some or the other role, there was a high likelihood that it was a hit.
The Fugitive
However, there was one movie of his that ended up becoming quite underrated, getting lost in the flashing lights of his filmography. One that got multiple Oscar nominations. Nick Fury is a spy above everything else. You don’t get to be the director of a top-secret organization unless you are the best at what you do. It is always expected that Nick Fury will have a backup plan for a back plan, and the new theory has come to light pointing out exactly what his backup plan was for the Avengers.
Nick Fury in The Avengers
Nick Fury has repeatedly proved himself to be a character who always has a plan ready to go. As a spy, he deals with knowledge and information, something he likes to keep from his enemies, but actively seeks out himself, not just about his enemies, but also his allies and friends.

Mace Windu isn't the only Jedi in Star Wars to wield a purple lightsaber. When Samuel L. Jackson joined the Star Wars prequel films, he made an unusual request to George Lucas. He wanted his Jedi, Mace Windu, to have a unique purple lightsaber. Lucas initially refused, insisting lightsabers came in only three colors - blue, green, and red - but eventually relented. The purple lightsaber became Mace Windu's trademark weapon, setting a precedent for many other colors of lightsaber blades.
The color is a blend of red and blue, pointing to the inner darkness that roils within Mace's heart.

Writer/director Shaun Seneviratne's feature film debut, Ben and Suzanne, A Reunion in 4 Parts, recently hit SXSW and may be heading to a theater or streamer near you soon. The romantic comedy tracks one couple coming to terms with the emotional shifts in their ever-evolving relationship. It’s a touching outing, but in talking to Seneviratne, the filmmaker admits to drawing inspiration for the project from the most curious places. We get how There’s Something About Mary could spark ideas for a romantic comedy. And director Éric Rohmer's wonderful 1986 romp, The Green Ray, too. But The Shining?
“Ben and Suzanne… is not a horror movie,” Seneviratne notes, chuckling, “but I think there's so much tone in The Shining that feels true to this, which is the effects of isolation and how that can make us feel. And how isolation can drive us crazy in many different ways.
