I’m not embarrassed to admit that I consume all kinds of rom-coms: the good, the not-so-good, the somewhere in-between. (I draw the line at anything that stars Ashton Kutcher. Hollywood: Please put Pedro Pascal on your rom-com leading-man shortlists. Many thanks in advance.) Anyway, I’ve sensed a shift of late. A change in the vibe. A subtle, faintly nostalgic perfume in the air: It’s not overpowering, like the glossy rom-com-a-minute marketplace of the 1990s and early Aughts, but still bright and warm and mood-boosting. The box office success of Anyone But You ($218 million globally) and streaming hit Irish Wish (currently top 5 in Nielsen’s movie chart), the fresh deals being made, the rom-coms rolling out this year with big names attached — all this activity reflects audience enthusiasm for polished, character-driven entertainment with jokes, heart and wish fulfillment.

Emma Roberts, the actress known for he roles in American Horror Story and the Scream movies, has transformed her Los Angeles home into one reminiscent of a real-life dollhouse.
“Minimalism is not my strong suit,” Roberts told Architectural Digest. “Every house I’ve ever lived in feels a little bit like a cabinet of curiosities…I loved the idea of making my very own grown-up dollhouse.”
Roberts said her goal was to create a home filled with cherished memories and love that would serve as a sanctuary for herself and her three-year-old son, Rhodes, whom she co-parents with ex-partner Garrett Hedlund.
In a video tour of her residence, Roberts highlighted a unique feature, the “doll wall,” located near her office. Each shelf has an array of collectibles from her childhood and discoveries made in adulthood. She enthusiastically showcased her beloved “drunk cowgirl” Barbie and Blythe dolls.

Before she was one of the biggest movie stars in the world, Julia Roberts was apparently subject to on-set mistreatment by the late director Herb Ross. Ross, who died in 2001, directed Roberts in one of her earliest hits, the heartfelt 1989 drama "Steel Magnolias." When the movie hit theaters, Roberts was just four months away from becoming a major celebrity thanks to the success of "Pretty Women." But in a recent interview with Vulture, her "Steel Magnolias" costar says Roberts, then in her early 20s, was subject to tough treatment by Ross.
"Herb was very, very, very hard on Julia," Sally Field told the outlet in February. "If you ever talk to Julia, she'll tell you." She continued: "We would all rally around Julia, because she was the baby. She was sort of the newcomer." In the film, Roberts plays Shelby, the daughter to Field's M'Lynn who suffers from diabetes. Canadian actor-brothers Shamier Anderson (John Wick 4) and Stephan James (If Beale Street Could Talk) had their stars unveiled on Scarborough’s Walk of Fame. The men were raised in the marginalized Toronto community by a single mother who emigrated to Canada from Jamaica.
“It’s really humbling and flattering to receive something like this in my hometown, at a mall where I grew up, where I shopped, it’s pretty cool,” Anderson told The Hollywood Reporter.
The local Walk of Fame honor for the fast-rising Hollywood stars is more than an exercise in collective positive thinking for an inner-city neighborhood that earlier brought to the world celebrities like Mike Myers, Jim Carrey and The Weeknd.
The brothers are at work via their Bay Mills Studios production banner — named after the community housing project they grew up in Scarborough — on a landmark TV drama set in the inner-city community that is their home away from Hollywood.

In Luca Guadagnino’s latest cinematic endeavor, “Challengers,” Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist form a dynamic, throuple-esque trio, each delivering performances that scream Oscar-worthy. The real question is, will Academy voters look beyond the palpable sexual chemistry to acknowledge the film’s artistic merit? That’s a challenge for the marketing maestros.
Penned by newcomer Justin Kuritzkes, the spouse of “Past Lives” writer-director Celine Song, “Challengers” weaves through a 13-year narrative, chronicling the life of Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), a tennis wunderkind-turned-coach, who hatches a plan for her husband Art’s (Faist) comeback. The plan pits him against his ex-buddy and Tashi’s former flame, Patrick (O’Connor), setting the stage for a dramatic unraveling.

In “Back to Black,” Jack O’Connell’s Blake Fielder-Civil comes into the life of Amy Winehouse — played by an exceptional Marisa Abela — with seductive bravado, sweeping the singer off her feet on their first meeting in a London pub thanks to, among other things, a lip-synced rendition of the Shangri-La’s “Leader of the Pack”.
As the divisive biopic, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and released in the U.K. by StudioCanal this Friday (and in the U.S. by Focus Features on May 17), agonizingly portrays, the smitten pair quickly descend into violent self-destruction — a “toxic co-dependency” as Fielder-Civil later describes it in the film — fueled by alcoholism and drug abuse.
Many may question the ethics of picking at a tragic story that was heavily chronicled and sensationalized by the media in real-time during Winehouse’s final years. But for anyone who’s been tracking O’Connell’s career, the opportunity to...

CinemaCon is in full swing. Studios are unveiling some new exclusive pictures and information at upcoming projects. We’ve gotten first looks at movies like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and trailers for Trap and The Joker: Folie à Deux. Some promotional materials have shown a look at Gladiator II and Wolverine’s new mask for Deadpool & Wolverine. Recently, Amazon MGM has revealed some new footage of the upcoming Christmas comedy Red One, which stars Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans and J.K. Simmons.
Deadline reports on the ten minutes that Amazon has screened for the CinemaCon audience. First off, while this is a movie that has been set for Prime Video, the footage is said to be very theatrical and it is revealed that Red One will indeed be hitting theaters on November 15. Not much can be said by way of details as those who saw the footage are instructed to keep their lips sealed.

Theater owners have been treated to their first glimpse of Amazon MGM Studios’ year-end holiday romp Red One, starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans. While the studio didn’t give an official presentation at CinemaCon this week, it used the annual convention to show off 10 minutes of the comedy inside a spacious suite at Caesars Palace.
Those who saw the footage were asked to keep plot details under tight wraps, although its known that J.K. Simmons plays Santa and Bonnie Hunt plays Mrs. Claus.
Red One, from Dwayne Johnson and his Seven Bucks Productions, is set to hit theaters worldwide Nov. 15, 2024, in order to take full advantage of the long year-end holiday corridor (several cinema operators told The Hollywood Reporter the footage looks promising). The holiday action comedy is based on an original story from Hiram Garcia, president of production at Seven Bucks Productions. Jake Kasdan directed from a script by Chris Morgan.

While Amazon MGM Studios didn’t take the stage at CinemaCon, they did meet with exhibitors and key press to strut their future theatrical slate, in particular they showed off ten minutes of the Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ movie Red One. While we agree to keep mum about the details of the Santa Claus rescue movie, let’s just say the originally conceived for Prime Video title is definitely meant for theatrical, which is where it’s going on Nov. 15; the only wide release currently on that weekend.
Let’s just say that Red One is a fire-breathing Christmas action movie that completely reinvents the holiday genre. There hasn’t been a mass appealing Christmas tentpole in six years, the last being Illumination/Universal’s The Grinch which made over a half billion worldwide. You may recall that this January, Sir Elton John became the 19th person ever to win the coveted Egot by claiming his first Emmy. But what you may be less familiar with is the fact that Emma Stone can become just the 20th actress (and the 25th entertainer overall) to claim an Eggocc if she triumphs in the race for the Best Drama Actress prize at this year’s Emmy Awards for her performance in the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Curse.” Too, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to be only the sixth actor to claim an Eggocc should he take home the Emmy prize in September for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his work in the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer.”

British actor Dev Patel is back to winning hearts through his onscreen performances with his most recent masterpiece, Monkey Man. Based in India (though shot in Indonesia), the film not only marks his directorial feature debut but also stars him in a never-seen-before role: A young man named ‘Kid’, who finally gets to settle the score with the people who took everything from him.

While the film is a masterwork in itself, multiple themes and elements have led to it being compared to the renowned John Wick saga. Before he became a professional actor, Dev Patel was a competitive martial artist. Really. The British-born son of Indian immigrants took up Taekwondo at the age of 10 in a neighborhood dojo where he’d go on to earn a black belt. Furthermore, only three years prior to his breakout on the TV series Skins, young Patel won a bronze medal at the Action International Martial Arts World Championships in Dublin. It was a defining moment in his youth. It was also something—he concedes on the other side of completing his first action film, the ferocious Monkey Man—which has always been in the back of his mind.

Being an under-the-radar production, which was made on a budget of $7M, no one expected An Officer and a Gentleman to be a humongous hit. But against all odds, the Richard Gere-led film went on to smash the box office upon its release, becoming a surprise hit, which not only racked in $190M but also garnered 2 Academy wins under his belt.

Selena Gomez has seen her “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars and guest stars get nominated for and win Emmys the past two years while she sat on the sidelines. Will the third time finally be the charm? She’s currently in fifth place in the Best Comedy Actress odds. Given her previous snubs, you’d be justified to doubt her chances, but we’ve been through this before with a twice snubbed actress-singer who pulled through on her third try under very similar circumstances: Mandy Moore.

Darren Aronofsky has found his next film and star. Following The Whale, he’ll direct Austin Butler in Caught Stealing, Deadline reports, a sports crime drama scripted by Charlie Huston based on his own book. The Sony Pictures project is described as an “adrenaline-soaked roller coaster ride” and will follow Butler as Hank Thompson, “a burned-out former baseball player, as he’s unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of ‘90s NYC.

Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino is to direct Julia Roberts in the “intense dramatic thriller” After The Hunt.
Luca Guadagnino just can’t help himself. In what must be a personal game of project Jenga, he continually adds films to his slate until his tower partly collapses, a few projects go by the wayside and he starts adding more again. Let’s recap: This year, Guadagnino has two films releasing. Challengers, the highly-anticipated love triangle tennis drama that was supposed to release last year before the Hollywood strikes upended everything. Challengers is slated to release later next month, but Guadagnino also has Queer on the way later this year too. That sounds equally promising given that Guadagnino is directing Daniel Craig in an adaptation of the William Burroughs book of the same name. Before the 2000s, Seinfeld stood at the top of TV shows, making its cast members incredibly wealthy and famous. Jerry Seinfeld was the first TV star to command a paycheck of $1 million per episode for the sitcom. The show still continues to fund the bank accounts of its cast members, including Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards. A recent report suggested that Jerry Seinfeld has even joined the elite billionaire club.

In Hollywood, casting decisions can make or break a movie. Sometimes, the biggest roles almost end up in different hands, which changes the story. Take Ghostbusters, for example, the classic film with the guys chasing ghosts. Well, imagine if Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts were carrying those proton packs! Alongside them, crazy, right?
A still from Ghostbusters (1984)
We all know the Ghostbusters crew, isn’t that so? However, they might have looked totally different. Back in ’84, Ivan Reitman dropped this flick about a ghost-catching scientist in New York City, and it blew up. Fans and critics couldn’t get enough of it. Then, in 1989, a sequel was released, but it did not quite hit the same high notes.
Attempts to make a third Ghostbusters film persevered for quite a while, yet hit a roadblock with Harold Ramis’ passing in 2014. Paul Feig’s 2016 reboot of the franchise featured an all-female team with nods to the originals.

Sydney Sweeney’s presence in any film is hard to ignore. With her distinctive millennial drawl and unmistakable presence, she often brings a piece of herself into the characters she portrays. Whether being real life whistle-blower in the impressive Reality, to playing Glen Powell’s love interest in Anyone But You, Sweeney is fast becoming the Julia Roberts of her era, which is why it is so exciting to see her taking risks with her ever growing career with the excellent new horror, Immaculate.
In the film, Sweeney stars as Sister Cecilia, a virginal young nun mysteriously impregnated and imprisoned by a fanatical convent convinced she carries the second coming of Christ. Directed by Michael Mohan, this film takes audiences on a wild ride through themes of religious oppression, superstition and feminine autonomy,
From the outset, it’s clear that Sweeney’s star power adds a layer of complexity to the character of Sister Cecilia.

At the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, native Pennsylvanian Janet Gaynor made history as the first American-born performer to win an Oscar by taking the Best Actress prize for her body of work in “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and “Sunrise.” Over the subsequent 95 years, 215 more thespians originating from the United States won the academy’s favor, meaning the country has now produced 68.1% of all individual acting Oscar recipients. Considering the last decade alone, the rate of such winners is even higher, at 70.3%.
At this point, 96.8% of American-born acting Oscar victors have hailed from one of 34 actual states. Of those constituting the remainder, three originated from the federal District of Columbia, while four were born in the territory of Puerto Rico. New York (home to 49 winners) is the most common birth state among the entire group, followed by California (34), Illinois (13), Massachusetts (11), and Pennsylvania (11).

Having it’s World Premiere at SXSW on March 14 was Alex Garland’s Civil War.
The Hollywood Reporter says, “The audience reaction to the film has been very effusive, with viewers calling it a riveting, disturbing, masterful piece of filmmaking (read the audience and critic first reactions).”
The consensus of many of the reviews out of the film festival in Austin say the film is brilliant:
“With the precision and length of its violent battle sequences, it’s clear Civil War operates as a clarion call. Garland wrote the film in 2020 as he watched cogs on America’s self-mythologizing exceptionalist machine turn, propelling the nation into a nightmare. With this latest film, he sounds the alarm, wondering less about how a country walks blindly into its own destruction and more about what happens when it does,” says Lovia Gyarkye in her review over at The Hollywood Reporter.

Julia Roberts is sitting on a cozy chocolate-colored sofa in a villa at West Hollywood’s Sunset Marquis two days before the Oscars, gazing affectionately at her newest project. “This is all me,” she says, pausing for a moment and then flashing her unmistakable megawatt grin to confirm that she is, in fact, only kidding.
The Oscar winner did, however, have a hand in the creation of what’s elegantly placed on a luxe tray in front of her: a three-piece Chopard high jewelry set comprising a necklace, earrings and oversized ring (all one of a kind) featuring emeralds, turquoise and rubellite gemstones. Specifically, Chopard’s ethically mined Insofu emerald, a 6,225-carat Zambian stone purchased in rough form by Chopard, from which the green stones have been cut.

The Ocean’s trilogy of movies is confirmed for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK, with a release pencilled in for the end of April: more here.
Steven Soderbergh’s trilogy of Ocean’s films – Ocean’s 11, Ocean’s 12, Ocean’s 13 – brought together a starry ensemble cast for a trio of crime caper movies. Really successful ones at that, even if the sort-of twist in Ocean’s 12 continues to have a degree of Wtf did they really do that about it.
Ocean’s 11 in particular though is a an absolute treat, and there’s much to enjoy across the three films, which as coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK for the first time.
Warner Bros is putting the films out, initially in posh Steelbook casing, and they’re set to debut on 29th April 2024. What’s more, you’ve got four different options if you’re...

Coleman Hough, who received solo screenplay credit on the quirky Steven Soderbergh-directed improvisational films Full Frontal and Bubble, has died. She was 62.
Hough died Feb. 24 at the Actors Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease, her friend Jennifer Romine told The Hollywood Reporter. She was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s when she was 42.
Full Frontal (2002), set in Hollywood and a film within a film, shot in 18 days using a consumer-grade digital camera and was the first produced screenplay by playwright and poet Hough.
Featuring Julia Roberts, Catherine Keener, David Hyde Pierce, Blair Underwood, David Duchovny and Jeff Garlin as a Harvey Weinstein type, it marked an extreme change of pace for Soderbergh, who was coming off Erin Brockovich (2000), an Oscar win for Traffic (2000) and Ocean’s Eleven (2001).
Hough’s characters are “simultaneously self-absorbed and less introspective than they think they are,” Craig J. Clark...

If Jennifer Lawrence can do it, why can’t Sydney Sweeney? We’re talking about digging into the archives of luxury brands — many of which have Met Costume Institute-sized archives of looks from the past 70 years or so.
For Vanity Fair‘s 2024 post-Oscar party, Lawrence ditched the polka dot Dior couture she wore to the Academy Awards, changing to a 1996 cream Chantilly lace puff sleeve dress by Givenchy, a slightly more revealing Bridgerton-style gown. Recycling ’90s styles has been a hot trend for more than a moment, but now it’s reached fever pitch.

Also for Vanity Fair‘s shindig, Sydney Sweeney dug deep into New York designer Marc Bouwer’s archives and plucked out the very same white satin gown that Angelina Jolie donned attending the 2004 Oscars.
