David Fincher is a philosopher as well as a perfectionist. When asked about the significance of his 8K remastering of “Seven” (premiering April 19 at the Chinese IMAX in 4K as part of the TCM Classic Film Festival), he told IndieWire, “If you think of it in string theory, it’s like a volumetric capture of where all these careers were at, and what these people wanted and needed and infused the thing with.”
Fincher was referring, of course, to Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey, and the rest of the cast and crew who made his breakout 1995 serial killer neo-noir. The film was a brilliant analog product of the era (with only seven weeks of prep) but also ahead of its time in conveying a dark, creepy, nihilistic police procedural that got under our skin like no other film.
“It is what it is, warts and all,” Fincher said.

Juliette Binoche has racked up a slew of awards for her film work, including both an Oscar and a BAFTA for her supporting turn in the historical drama “The English Patient.” Now she is in line to win an Emmy for her leading role in another historical epic — Apple TV’s “The New Look.”
In this acclaimed drama, she portrays the iconic French fashion designer Coco Chanel who is threatened by the up-and-coming Christian Dior (Ben Mendelsohn) in post-wwii Paris. Binoche delivers a complex, carefully curated performance that has been celebrated by critics as a shining light in this lush new series.
Joyce Slaton (Common Sense Media) noted: “Juliette Binoche and Ben Mendelsohn are excellent in their roles as the conflicted Chanel and Dior, both of whom, history remembers, wound up collaborating with and/or designing for Nazi forces in Nazi-occupied France… Chanel is a more complicated figure, and yet...

Fans regularly make film biopics about famous musicians successful, but they also love to nitpick the results. Or to misquote Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division and the subject of a rather good musical biopic (Control), love will tear apart any work of fan service if it screws up the story, paints the subject in too unflattering a light or, worst of all, mangles the music with impersonations that barely rise above the level of karaoke. (Consider, if you dare, Kevin Spacey as Bobby Darin in Beyond the Sea.)
On the other hand, there’s also something irksome about biopics that have actors lip sync to the original songs, like Naomi Ackie did for I Wanna Dance With Somebody or, much less successfully, Dennis Quaid in Great Balls of Fire! Especially if that means access to the original recordings or even rights to the songs in the first...

You may recall that this January, Sir Elton John became the 19th person ever to win the coveted Egot by claiming his first Emmy. But what you may be less familiar with is the fact that Emma Stone can become just the 20th actress (and the 25th entertainer overall) to claim an Eggocc if she triumphs in the race for the Best Drama Actress prize at this year’s Emmy Awards for her performance in the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Curse.” Too, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to be only the sixth actor to claim an Eggocc should he take home the Emmy prize in September for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his work in the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer.”
What is an Eggocc, you ask? Why, it’s Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar and Critics Choice statuettes, of course. And as just alluded to, winning all four...

These days, actress Robin Wright is likely best known for her six seasons as Claire Underwood on “House of Cards.” Her character’s trajectory on Netflix’s often-rancid take on underhanded politics saw her ending up becoming the 47th President of the United States after co-star Kevin Spacey was forced to leave the show due to allegations of sexual misconduct. Wright collected six Emmy nominations as Best Drama Actresss and two for being an executive producer on the show. Wright also earned directorial stripes while calling the shots behind the camera for 10 episodes as well.
That experience led her to make her directorial film debut with “Land,” in which she played Edee, a woman filled with suicidal thoughts after suffering a tragic personal loss. She decides to go off the grid while moving into a grungy cabin in amongst the scenic mountains of Wyoming. Her attempts to chop wood, hunt...

The episode of The Best of the Bad Guys focusing on Damien Thorn was written, narrated, and edited by Mike Holtz.
The Prince of Darkness. Heir to both Hell and Thorn Industries. The antichrist himself and guy who gets his haircut at Great Clips, Damien Thorn. The titular character of The Omen franchise will be praised not by his usual followers but by us as we dive into the second edition of The Best Of The Bad Guys, where we rank the best work of cinema’s most evil villains.
Damien Thorn’s run of evil has spanned five films including an utterly pointless shot-for-shot remake and a TV series with another prequel on the way in The First Omen. And though The Omen IV: The Awakening doesn’t follow Damien himself; his presence is felt. The franchise started in 1976 with legendary director Richard Donner giving us the first version...

It took Gary Oldman some time to win his first Oscar, which he claimed for “Darkest Hour” in 2018, and it is taking him even longer to win his first Emmy. The legendary British actor was first nominated 23 years ago for his guest role on “Friends.”He should be reaping a second Emmy bid for his leading role in the Apple TV+ drama “Slow Horses.” The acclaimed series, based on Mick Herron‘s book, follows a group of British intelligence agents who are confined to a dumping ground of a department due to their past mistakes.
Oldman stars at the head of the department, Jackson Lamb who is rude, abrasive, full of bad habits, and, a lot of the time, drunk. As the character, Oldman is a joy to watch as the crass and broken spy. But while he revels in the comedy of said crassness, Oldman sows in an undercurrent of intelligence and belied sharpness,...

Kirsten Dunst started her career super early, as a child model, at just the age of three. Being in the industry from such a young age gave her a head start.
Despite her rising fame, the Point Pleasant native also faced challenges because of the roles that demanded intimate scenes. In the late 1990’s, she was offered a role that required her to kiss several male co-stars on a house roof.
Kirsten Dunst played Mary Jane in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy
The movie is none other than The Virgin Suicides — a novel by Jeffrey Eugenides, later adapted into a film by Sofia Coppola. It tells the story of the Lisbon sisters, five teenage girls living in suburban America in the 1970s.
Their lives are shrouded in mystery and tragedy, as they face repression, longing, and ultimately, death. But a clever trick by director Coppola enabled Dunst to maintain her...

Kirsten Dunst had no desire to be America’s sweetheart or the female lead of “American Beauty.”
The “Bring It On” alum told Variety that she was approached to play the high school cheerleader who becomes the object of a suburban dad’s (Kevin Spacey) fantasies in Sam Mendes’ 1999 film. Now, 25 years later, Dunst is revealing why she didn’t even want to audition for the role.
“I don’t know if I necessarily turned it down,” Dunst said of the role, citing that it wasn’t outright offered. “I think I just turned down the meeting or something. But yeah, I just didn’t feel comfortable with the sexuality.”
Mena Suvari was instead cast in the role and the film went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Suvari said some of the movie’s sexuality opposite Spacey — or at least the preparation for those scenes — was “weird and unusual.

There are innumerable tales of films in Tinseltown that were never finished due to a variety of reasons. But among the most strange and tragic cases is the follow-up to the classic Russell Crowe 1997 flick, L.A. Confidential, helmed by Curtis Hanson.
For those unfamiliar, this Warner Bros. film, which starred Crowe, Kevin Spacey, and Guy Pearce, was one of the greatest neo-noir crime works of the 1990s. Hanson and co-writer Brian Helgeland even shared the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for it. Also, the $126.2 million flick received rave reviews from critics as well as audiences, and fans were excited about a potential sequel.

Joe Lieberman, the former Connecticut senator and Al Gore’s Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000, has died. He was 82.
His family said in a statement that he died due to complications from a fall.
“Senator Lieberman’s love of God, his family and America endured throughout his life of service in the public interest,” his family said. His wife, Hadassah, and other family members were at his side when he died, according to the statement.
At the time of his death, Lieberman was leading an effort to recruit a candidate for the group No Labels, which has been seeking a “unity” ticket to run independently of the Democratic and Republican parties.
Lieberman held to the view that, even in a time of hyper polarization, there was a common ground to be found in politics. His own career reflected that, and even those who criticized his positions found him friendly, kind and polite.

Not that long ago, a dark thriller featuring Kevin Spacey as a smooth-talking stranger who arrives in a small town with an apparent vendetta against one of its inhabitants might have been a major movie event. He was, after all, a hugely popular and critically acclaimed actor, known for playing iconic villains from The Usual Suspects and Seven all the way up through House of Cards. His gift for intimate, Shakespearean malice could certainly boost a box-office haul.

The 30-year anniversary of David Fincher’s horror masterpiece Se7en is fast approaching, and David Fincher had teased just last summer that a 4K restoration was on the way.
Fincher told Variety in June 2023, “We’re going back and doing it in 4K from the original negative and we overscan it, oversample it, doing all of the due diligence and there’s a lot of shit that needs to be fixed. Because there’s a lot of stuff that we now can add because of high dynamic range.”
He continued, “You know, streaming media is a very different thing than 35 mm motion picture negative in terms of what it can actually retain. So there are, you know, a lot of blown-out windows that we have to kind of go back and ghost in a little bit of cityscape out there.”
So when will you be able to see this new 4K restoration of Se7en?...

Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings is considered one of the best film series to be ever made. And to commemorate their contributions to this iconic franchise, the main cast of the film series, including Sean Astin and Ian McKellen, decided to get matching tattoos of the Elvish word for nine.
The Lord of the Rings
However, one of the cast members, John Rhys-Davies, opted against joining his co-stars in this gesture and allowed his stunt double to take his place. The 79-year-old actor recently reflected on his decision not to get the matching tattoo, as he discussed the meaning and significance of tattoos.

John Rhys-Davies portrayed the role of Gimli, a brave warrior who also provided a bit of comic relief to the story, in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Kevin Spacey, who used to be one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, found his name embroiled in several controversies. He has been repeatedly accused of s*xual misconduct by several men.
Even though he was cleared of almost all charges (via CNN), it led him to be fired from his critically acclaimed House of Cards series. Now the actor has hit the headlines once again after Lord of the Rings star Peter Mullan called him out for his extremely narcissistic behavior.

Scottish actor Peter Mullan, whose credits include The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Westworld, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, passed through Series Mania in Lille this week, where he participated in what turned out to be one of the festival’s most raucous masterclass sessions.
Mullan appeared alongside French journalist Charlotte Blum, who chaired the session and quizzed the Scotsman on his decades-long career and his philosophy of acting.
“The thing with acting like any form of play is that it’s fun when you are playing,” Mullan said. “A footballer can relive the moment of scoring the goal, but it’s not as much fun as scoring the goal. And it’s the same with acting. You can relive it if you want. You can sit and watch yourself all day long if you want.”

At the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, native Pennsylvanian Janet Gaynor made history as the first American-born performer to win an Oscar by taking the Best Actress prize for her body of work in “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and “Sunrise.” Over the subsequent 95 years, 215 more thespians originating from the United States won the academy’s favor, meaning the country has now produced 68.1% of all individual acting Oscar recipients. Considering the last decade alone, the rate of such winners is even higher, at 70.3%.
At this point, 96.8% of American-born acting Oscar victors have hailed from one of 34 actual states. Of those constituting the remainder, three originated from the federal District of Columbia, while four were born in the territory of Puerto Rico. New York (home to 49 winners) is the most common birth state among the entire group, followed by California (34), Illinois (13), Massachusetts (11), and Pennsylvania (11).

With Oscar season on the horizon, many looked back on one of the ceremony’s most memorable moments, which was the Oscars Selfie that talk show host Ellen DeGeneres took in 2014. The selfie featured A-listers such as Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, Changing Tatum, Bradley Cooper, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence, Jared Leto, and Lupita Nyong’o. It was often regarded as one of the most memorable selfies ever taken.

However, ever since the selfie was taken, the lives of these A-listers seem to have gone off the rails. A recent article by the New York Post opined that the ‘Oscar Selfie Curse’ was a real thing and that most of the actors present in the selfie have either been canceled, faced career setbacks, or have had disastrous personal lives. Fans, however, are annoyed with this narrative and are not buying into the Oscar Curse.

We Oscarologists (ridiculous name) spend our time trying to read certain tea leaves to figure out what a potential Best Picture winner typically needs to win in order to take home the Oscars’ top prize. Best Director was once the most important category to excel in. Then it was Best Editing that we thought a Best Picture hopeful needed to check off. Then, recently, the combination of a writing Oscar and an acting win has proven to be a powerful one for eventual Best Picture winners. But what do the stats say? Well, we’ve combed through every Best Picture winner of this century and documented which other Oscars they won. We then tallied those figures up in this below handy chart:

“Oppenheimer” took home an impressive seven Academy Awards at Sunday’s Oscars, including the night’s top prize of Best Picture. The Universal movie also won Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy amongst a number of other awards. That is one below the total of eight wins we predicted for the film as “The Zone of Interest” beat the movie to win Best Sound. However, seven is still a huge tally and places “Oppenheimer” amongst the Best Picture winners to take home the highest amount of Oscars this century. Most times, the Oscars broadcast goes off without a hitch. But other times, things happen that leave people talking about it for years — or even decades — to come. While surprises have been happening since before the Oscars were even broadcast — much less before the boom of social media — The Hollywood Reporter takes a look at the biggest viral moments from the last 10 years. Hollywood won’t forget about the streaker or Jennifer Lawrence tripping up the stairs, but those moments happened before 2014.

The 34-year-old British actor Nicholas Hoult kicked off production last week on Warner Bros. Discovery’s next big bet: “Superman” with director James Gunn and actors David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. The star of “About a Boy,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and Hulu series “The Great” recently went on Michael Rosenbaum’s “Inside of You” podcast and talked a bit about preparing for the role of the evil mastermind Lex Luthor.
First, he complimented his new boss Gunn for making the audition process fun. He said he enjoyed the “Guardians of the Galaxy” auteur’s method of “try[ing] things in the moment, just shouting out from the monitors, ‘Say this line. Do this! Do that!’”
Then he added that even though Luthor is better known for his brains rather than his brawn, Hoult has been hitting the weights. “There’s that bit in ‘All-Star Superman’ [the Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely...

Seven years after his career imploded amid dozens of sexual misconduct accusations, Kevin Spacey’s ongoing efforts to resurrect his career have taken him to Italy. The two-time Oscar winner will star as The Devil in The Contract, one of three projects that will soon involve Italian filmmaker Massimiliano Caroletti and his wife, the former porn star Eva Henger.
Cinecittà News, the official news outlet of Rome’s famed Cinecittà Studios, revealed on Tuesday that the project, which recently wrapped shooting in Rome, is being directed by Massimo Paolucci (All in One Day) and will be produced by Tm Entertainment and Sandro Lazzerini. Kevin Spacey may have been found not guilty in his sex offenses trial last year, but he still might as well be The Devil as far as a lot of people are concerned – so it’s fitting that he does indeed play a version of The Devil in his latest project, the psychological thriller The Contract, which just wrapped production in Italy. Spacey’s character in the film directed by Massimo Paolucci is called The Devil, and the filmmakers told Variety that his role is along the lines of “Al Pacino’s in The Devil’s Advocate as Satan who takes the guise of a human lawyer, and that of Robert De Niro in Angel Heart, a Satanic businessman who hires a seedy gumshoe detective to descend into Hell.”
Details on the plot of the English-language film have not been revealed. Spacey is joined in the cast by Eric Roberts and Vincent Spano.

Kevin Spacey will appear as a character named “The Devil” in Italian director Massimo Paolucci’s psychological thriller “The Contract,” which just wrapped principal photography in Rome.
The English-language film, described in a statement as having a similar storyline as Alan Parker’s “Angel Heart” and Taylor Hackford’s “The Devil’s Advocate,” also stars Eric Roberts and Vincent Spano, Italian production company Tm Entertainment said.
Spacey arrived in Rome last December to shoot “The Contract.”
Reps for Spacey, Roberts and Spano did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The “House of Cards” star’s career imploded amid allegations of sexual misconduct in 2017, but he has since been found not liable in an October 2022 lawsuit brought by “Star Trek: Discovery” actor Anthony Rapp and was declared not guilty in a U.K. sexual assault trial in July 2023. Andre Roussimoff, popularly known as Andre the Giant was regarded as ‘the Eighth Wonder of the World’ due to his great size. Although he is mostly known for his contributions to the wrestling world since the World Wide Wrestling Foundation (Wwwf) promoter Vincent McMahon booked him as a ‘special attraction’, he famously played the character of a giant named Fezzik in the 1987 movie The Princess Bride.

After what has been an incredibly predictable awards season for television in the last month with all the previous ceremonies checking “Succession,” “The Bear” and “Beef” down the line, it would make sense to presume that the Screen Actors Guild Awards this weekend will just follow the herd and honor the same champs. But lest we forget, we have seen time and time again where SAG-AFTRA does their own thing and sometimes yields surprising results, stopping some actors and shows in their tracks that have been on a roll. Read below for some recent shocking TV winners at the SAG Awards and what it could mean this year.
Beginning with last year’s ceremony, the two limited series/television movie acting winners were way off course of who was expected to triumph. For best actress, Amanda Seyfried was sweeping all the televised awards for “The Dropout” and was expected to complete the run with SAG,...

To celebrate the ramp up of Superman: Legacy‘s production in Atlanta, director/scribe and co-dc boss James Gunn posted a photo of the cast on Instagram today.

Of note in the photo is a bald-headed Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The actor follows in the footsteps of such actors as Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey and Jesse Eisenberg who’ve played the villain on the big screen.

“Wonka” reigns again on the VOD charts, but the week’s real star is Amazon/MGM’s “American Fiction.” Driven by its five Oscar nominations and continued success at the box office, it reached #2 at Apple TV/iTunes on Saturday and is currently #4. Not bad for a racial satire that’s grossed $17 million to date.
It suggests the film will earn substantially more than its theatrical take, reflecting smart strategy: While Amazon makes movies for streaming, it recognizes (like Apple) the value of making VOD its first at-home platform. It’s also a good argument that the Netflix Mo of deemphasizing theatrical and skipping VOD misses opportunities to get awards and audience traction.
“Oppenheimer” (Universal) repeats as #2 on two charts, though its reduced price keeps it from making Vudu revenue-driven list. Christopher Nolan’s Oscar frontrunner has been the strongest film since its home-viewing debut three months ago, now sustained by Oscar nomination-leading total.

Welcoming nominees and guests to the 76th DGA Awards, director, producer and writer Judd Apatow greeted the audience joking, “I’m your host Bradley Cooper in an even more beguiling Jewish nose.”
Apatow opened up with a zinger drafting off the DGA’s history of never striking against the studios. He noted that his agents told him to hold out for more money for his fifth time as host of the ceremony: “But in the spirit of the DGA I accepted their first offer.”
Taking aim at the current political landscape, Apatow addressed the crowd stating, “I swear to god if this is the only time you vote this year, you can all go fuck yourselves.” He noted the age of the likely nominees for the presidential election, Joe Biden and Donald Trump. The race is going to be between “a guy old enough to have met Hitler and a guy who wishes he had.

Kevin Spacey has struck a deal with MRC, the production company behind House of Cards, to slash a $31 million judgment against him for on-set sexual misconduct involving young crewmembers to $1 million, according to court documents. In return, Spacey will back arguments from MRC in a legal battle against its insurer that he was written out of the show because he was too sick to return, which would trigger its insurance policy.
The settlement, which was first reported by Puck, opens a new front in labyrinthine litigation over recovering money for increased expenses and lost revenue tied to MRC shortening and rewriting the final season of House of Cards as a result of Spacey’s exit. With the deal, MRC is looking to collect on a $150 million policy from Fireman’s Fund Insurance, as well as punitive damages for fraudulently denying its claim.

Throughout the 96-year history of the Academy Awards, the amount of acting lineups consisting only of first-time nominees has reached 37, or about 10% of the overall total. While that number may not seem high in a general sense, these cases actually outnumber those exclusively involving veteran contenders by a ratio of three to one. However, although this list expanded as recently as 2023, rookie-only acting lineups are gradually becoming less common than veteran-only ones, the amount of which has nearly doubled within the last dozen years.
Whereas 75% of veteran-only acting quintets have involved lead performers rather than supporting ones, almost the exact opposite is true of lineups full of newcomers. For instance, only one existing case of the former kind concerns supporting actresses, whereas the same category has produced 15 rookie-only rosters. The last such group consisted of 2000 winner Angelina Jolie and nominees Toni Collette (“The Sixth Sense”), Catherine Keener (“Being John Malkovich...

The trailer for Kevin Spacey’s new film, Peter Five Eight, has been released from Invincible Entertainment. The new trailer comes just a few weeks after Spacey released another of his annual Christmas video skits of him reprising his popular character from House of Cards, Frank Underwood. In his most recent entry, Spacey controversially brought in former Fox News host, Tucker Carlson, to interview him in character where he teased a race for the White House. And now, Spacey is back in his first leading role since controversy plagued his image and his career in 2017. In Peter Five Eight, Spacey seemingly adopts his Underwood-esque southern drawl again until it’s revealed that he’s an undercover contract killer.

Update, 8:25 Pm: It is the kind of deal Frank Underwood would look to the camera and gloat over.
After years of Kevin Spacey battling House of Cards producer MRC over contract breaches arising from sexual misconduct allegations during his stint as the fictional politician and Potus on the Netflix series, the Oscar winner and the studio and it’s successor MRC II have come to a payoff agreement. Kevin Spacey will pay $1 million to MRC, the production company behind “House of Cards,” to settle claims that he sexually harassed young male staffers on the show.
Spacey was dropped from the final season of the show in 2017. He was facing a $31 million judgment in the case, after an arbitrator found that the allegations were credible and that MRC deserved to recoup its costs for scrapping the final season and starting over without him.
Spacey has agreed to pay the $1 million over multiple years in installments equal to 10% of his after-tax income. MRC has also secured Spacey’s cooperation in trying to recoup the balance of its costs from someone better able to pay: its insurance company.
In April 2022, MRC sued Fireman’s Fund and Lloyd’s of London on the theory that Spacey’s absence from the show was covered by their cast insurance policies.

Kevin Spacey plays a killer with no moral compass in the official trailer for Peter Five Eight, which marks his first leading role since his career imploded amid allegations of sexual misconduct in 2017.
Spacey’s assassin character, Peter, has a comedic streak as he’s called to a small mountain community to find a seemingly glamorous real estate agent with a dark secret, played by Jet Jandreau.
Peter targets Brenda, played by Rebecca de Mornay, for information at the urging of his powerful and shadowy boss, Mr. Lock, played by Jake Weber. Thora Birch has been performing in Hollywood since she was just a tiny tyke, famously playing Dani Dennison in the cult Halloween classic "Hocus Pocus," where she becomes the target of the malevolent Sanderson sisters. But although one of her most memorable roles came in 1993, when she was just 11 years old, that was far from the end of her career as an actress. Birch has continued to work in the industry, lending her talents to television series, films, music videos, and even podcasts over the years.

Although it earned its only Oscar for its screenplay, it's hard to imagine "Chinatown" being half as good as it was without the unforgettable performances of its main cast. Sadly, as the 1974 film ages into legendary status, so too do the actors that made it so legendary.
Not every actor who made the 1974 mystery movie so great has lived to see it reach its 50-year anniversary in 2024. However, some of the greatest...
