Editor’s note: The below contains spoilers for the series finale of “Apples Never Fall.”
Still reeling from that “Apples Never Fall” ending? Well, actor Sam Neill is about to take a bite out of just how that shocking finale came to be – and (surprise) it wasn’t even the original conclusion planned by showrunner Melanie Marnich.
“Apples Never Fall” strayed from the Liane Moriarty novel source material, and due to the WGA strike in 2023, production was halted in Australia. Showunner Marnich told IndieWire that due to the strike, she was no longer on set as a writer and executive producer, but that the directors and actors continued until the SAG-AFTRA strike subsequently went into effect.
“They were true to the scripts which I really appreciated and they were so respectful,” Marnich recalled. “But then the actor strike hit and we of course shut down. Honestly, when we came back,...

Apples Never Fall is the latest series to be adapted from a popular Liane Moriarty book, following Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers. While it certainly has a sprawling ensemble like those TV series, this time the focus is mainly on one single family and the resentments and secrets — and possible murder — which is tearing them apart.
Apples Never Fall follows Stan and Joy Delaney, two respected tennis enthusiasts who are retiring and selling their tennis academy, as none of their children were interested in running the academy. There is a lot of emotional distance in this family already, but when Joy goes missing one day and Stan lies about her disappearance, the Delaneys become involved in a police investigation that opens up every issue, hidden or otherwise, in the family's life.
We already spoke with Sam Neill about his character, so MovieWeb wanted to speak with Merrigan-Turner, Lacy,...

This post contains minor spoilers for "Apples Never Fall."
Author Liane Moriarty writes twisty thrillers centered on complex female experiences within distinct socio-cultural settings, and her books have proven to be perfect for small-screen adaptations. Moriarty's "Nine Perfect Strangers," which was adapted by Hulu, explored themes of loss, alienation, and the search for meaning, while her "Big Little Lies" got the grand HBO adaptation treatment with two brilliant seasons (and the possibility of season 3 being still up in the air). Her latest work, "Apples Never Fall," has now been adapted into a brand new Peacock series of the same name developed by Melanie Marnich, who saw immense potential in translating Moriarty's challenging material for television.
Marnich experienced some issues during the adaptation process, as she considers Moriarty's book "an embarrassment of riches" where it was "really, really hard to figure out what served the momentum of the show and...

The Liane Moriarty cinematic universe has now come to Peacock, but how does one adapt the author behind “Big Little Lies” and “Nine Perfect Strangers” work for the screen?
“Apples Never Fall” showrunner Melanie Marnich told IndieWire that maintaining beloved novelist Moriarty’s “page-turner energy” was key for adapting the twisted family drama starring Annette Bening and Sam Neill.
“The pacing of those kinds of moments was to make the TV show have the same page-turner energy of the book,” Marnich said. “It was something I had to really be aware of. In the writer’s room, we worked really hard to craft the sort of constant turn of the story. It was so juicy. I’m a huge fan of Liane. I really, really worked to capture that same page turner energy in the show to keep things moving, but also never at the sacrifice of character development.”

One of the sub-genres that fans love in the fantasy realm is dragon stories. Netflix is tapping into this with Millie Bobby Brown's Damsel, where she plays Princess Elodie, a young woman forced to fight off a dragon she was offered up to as a sacrifice.
While Elodie's journey is more action-laced, there are many dragon tales filled with romance, drama, and horror. It reiterates how versatile these stories can be. With that in mind, here are some entertaining dragon stories outside of Damsel.

Everyone has done jobs they're not particularly proud of in their past. For actors, any of these past works are in the public eye, even if some go on to be largely forgotten. This includes the fan-favorite horror genre, from cheap, grindhouse and direct-to-video schlock to big-budget misfires. Beyond the quality of the movies, some actors just didn't have particularly pleasant experiences behind-the-scenes, leading them to distance themselves from their projects after completion. Every actor has a handful of films that they wish they hadn't signed on for, and with the benefit of hindsight, several have gone public with their regrets.
From established genre icons disappointed at their respective franchise returns to newcomers trying to get their start, horror has no shortage of movies Hollywood stars want off their resume. In a particular instance, one actor's horror movie experience led them to not only regret their participation, but quit acting altogether.

Liane Moriarty's TV adaptations captivate audiences with star-studded casts and intricate plots that delve into complex themes. Apples Never Fall struggles to differentiate itself, relying on worn-out tropes compared to Moriarty's previous standouts. While Nine Perfect Strangers tries to weave multiple narratives, it doesn't capture the emotional depth of Big Little Lies.

Apples Never Fall is a new Peacock series about a retired tennis coach who mysteriously goes missing not long after a young woman comes knocking on her door asking for help. The seven-episode mystery drama follows the family, including Joy’s husband and four grown kids, and their desperation to find out where she is, what happened to her, and if she’s even alive. The finger-pointing, suspicions, secrets, and lies come flooding out in the process.
The concept of a missing person isn’t new in the TV medium; in fact, there are droves of TV shows centered around someone (or multiple people) who vanish suddenly. The plot is typically about following breadcrumbs to figure out what happened to that person. While the outcomes aren’t always a happy reunion, the journey to get to the end of each fictional story is always intriguing.

The finale of “Apples Never Fall” on Peacock fills in all the gaps left behind by the six episodes before it by pulling back the curtains of what happened to missing matriarch Joy Delaney (Annette Bening) from her own perspective.
After Joy, mother and core of the Delaney family, goes missing, her husband Stan (Sam Neill) and four children — Amy (Alison Brie), Troy (Jake Lacy), Logan (Conor Merrigan Turner) and Brooke (Essie Randles) — are forced to hash out long-simmering resentments and regrets while trying to figure out where Joy went.
The series is divided into standalone episodes through each family member’s perspective, with Stan and Joy’s episodes being the climactic final two as the mystery finally comes together.
“Getting to the Joy and Stan of it, what is true is how many of us kids ever see our parents as people? Of course, you have the kid episodes,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains major spoilers for “Apples Never Fall,” now streaming on Peacock.
Known for her twisty and darkly humorous thrillers, Liane Moriarty is the author behind the source material for TV hits like HBO’s “Big Little Lies” and Hulu’s “Nine Perfect Strangers.” Like many of her stories, the newest Moriarty adaptation — Peacock’s “Apples Never Fall” — is centered on a suspenseful mystery, but showrunner Melanie Marnich was just as interested in what the author had to say about the complexities of family dynamics.
“You have to know these people love each other, otherwise they can’t cause each other pain,” Marnich told Variety at an early screening event for the series. “There’s a phrase in [Moriarty’s] book that’s something like: ‘You can love somebody and hate somebody. Both things can be true.’ You can look across the table at your husband, your wife or...

Alison Brie’s character Amy in “Apples Never Fall” does not operate like your typical eldest sibling. She lacks a steady source of income, is emotionally erratic and her housing situation is one shared with a group of graduate students.
But as the Peacock limited series’ third episode shows, she’s also perhaps the only Delaney with a healthy amount of emotional intelligence.
In the TV adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s 2021 novel of the same name, Joy Delaney (Annette Bening), matriarch of a competitive brood of tennis players, goes missing, prompting the four children and their father to revisit old wounds and unearth family secrets.
Episode 3, “Amy” serves as a bottle episode for the eldest daughter — following the structure lined up with episodes for Logan (Conor Merrigan Turner), Brooke (Essie Randles), Troy (Jake Lacy) and patriarch Stan (Sam Neill). In retracing her steps before her mother’s disappearance, one major...

Australian author Liane Moriarty is known for her layered characters, complex family dynamics, and intriguing mysteries. After the success of her book-to-screen adaptation of Big Little Lies on HBO in 2017, she's been in high demand.
In 2021, Hulu adapted another novel, Nine Perfect Strangers, which expanded on the characters' arcs from the book. It became a hit because of the humor in the series.
Peacock's Apples Never Fall combines the best of both, but it was most like the book and a fun, binge-worthy watch. I couldn't stop watching because I couldn't wait to see the next twist.
Apples Never Fall explores the complexities of marriage and family when you peel back the layers. This isn't a cookie-cutter happy family. The Delaneys are raw and honest, but they love each other deeply.

Apples Never Fall missed an opportunity with its release schedule on Peacock, which saw all seven episodes dropping at once. With a central mystery at its core, Apples Never Fall would have benefited from a weekly release plan. The Peacock show's cliffhangers are perfectly set up to keep viewers tuning in and talking about the series for a while.
Apples Never Fall missed a huge opportunity with its streaming release plan, as a different model would have greatly benefited the Peacock show. The series adapts Liane Moriarty's best-selling book of the same name, blending a mysterious missing-persons case with a gripping family drama. Covering two timelines, it tells the story of Joy Delaney's disappearance. The past storyline shows the events leading up to the Delaney matriarch's sudden departure — including the arrival of a suspicious young woman — while the present-day plot follows her husband and kids as they grapple with her absence.

Apples Never Fall delves into complex family dynamics. The series' mystery is intriguing and presents many twists and turns. Annette Bening and Sam Neill stand out in the talented ensemble
Apples Never Fall presents an engaging mystery that keeps the audience guessing at each turn. Comedic takes on mystery stories are quite popular these days, between the Knives Out franchise, Peacock's own Poker Face, and more. While Apples Never Fall escapes that trend to present a dark mystery that is rooted in several years of trauma, the limited series is just as gripping with its dramatic lenses, making for one of the best television series to debut this year so far.

Jurassic Park star Sam Neill recently revealed whether he has been approached to return for the upcoming seventh film in the long-running Universal franchise.
In an interview with Forbes to discuss his new series, Apples Never Fall, the actor was asked if Universal had reached out yet about reprising his iconic role as Dr. Alan Grant in the forthcoming Jurassic World 4. As for whether he'd actually want to return to the franchise, Neill added, "Look, I can obviously play tennis - you see that in the show, but as far as running from dinosaurs, maybe that’s it."

It’s a new era for dinosaurs. Jurassic World: Dominion concluded the sequel trilogy and in their alternate universe, humans and Earth’s prehistoric creatures are now living side-by-side. But hey, at least we don’t have to worry about locusts anymore, right? Recently, Universal has brought in the original Jurassic Park writer, David Koepp, to pen the script for another Jurassic World film to continue the brand. The studio also tapped Gareth Edwards, who recently took on the concept of a future with AI in The Creator, to direct the new film.
The Insneider has recently unveiled a big rumor that Universal is now offering Scarlett Johansson the chance to fight off dinosaurs with the lead role in the new Jurassic World movie. Plot details for the continuation have yet to be announced, so it is not yet known who she will be playing in this entry. The film...

The Jurassic World trilogy starring Chris Pratt continued where Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park trilogy left off and expanded the universe of Michael Crichton’s original novel. Now, while Dominion was supposed to be the last movie in the series, but it was soon confirmed that a seventh film was in the works and as of today, we have some interesting casting rumors regarding the movie.
Back in January 2024, it was reported that a seventh movie was in the works, with the studio looking to do a soft reboot of the franchise; the film probably won’t erase the events of the two previous trilogies, but a fresh start is what the producers are looking for, which is why Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Chris Pratt, and Bryce Dallas Howard are not expected to reprise their roles.

Annette Bening on Following Up ‘Nyad’ with ‘Apples Never Fall’: “I Wanted a Land Kind of Acting Job”
Just days after attending the 2024 Oscars as a best actress nominee for her performance in Nyad, Annette Bening is already on to her next project: starring in the Peacock limited series Apples Never Fall.
Based on the bestselling novel from Liane Moriarty — who also wrote Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers — the show follows former tennis coaches Joy (Bening) and Stan (Sam Neill) as they retire from their successful tennis academy and look forward to spending time with their four adult children (Jake Lacy, Alison Brie, Conor Merrigan-Turner and Essie Randles); everything changes, though, when Joy suddenly goes missing.
Bening, who also served as an executive producer, had never done a limited series before but was drawn to shooting to Australia and working on an ensemble type of project. And filming a year after Nyad, “I wanted to do something different and not in the water and not with swimming.

But when Joy suddenly disappears, her children are forced to re-examine their parents’ so-called perfect marriage as their family’s darkest secrets begin to surface.” Academy Award-nominee Annette Benning (Nyad) and Golden...

By all appearances, Joy (Annette Bening) and Stan Delaney (Sam Neill) have lived an idyllic life. Both were tennis champions in their youth and tennis coaches for decades later. Together, they founded the Delaney Tennis Academy in South Florida, where he helped at least one star pupil go on to win a Grand Slam. Now, they’ve sold the school and are entering retirement, hoping to spend as much time as possible with their four grown kids, Troy (Jake Lacy), Amy (Alison Brie), Logan (Conor Merrigan-Turner), and Brooke (Essie Randles). These are two people who spent their professional lives playing the sport they’ve always loved, and who still found romance, community, and connection at home. They have it all, and every bit of it is pretty darn good.

Give credit to Liane Moriarty, the author who came to most people’s attention when HBO adapted her breakthrough novel, Big Little Lies: She’s a master of the hook, the plot device that immediately grabs one’s attention. In Apples Never Fall, that hook involves the limited series’ marquee star: recent Oscar nominee Annette Bening (Nyad) in her first lead TV role as dissatisfied Florida mom and recent retiree Joy Delaney, first seen peddling a bike through the streets of sunny West Palm Beach, where she and husband Stan (Sam Neill), both former tennis pros, operated a family tennis academy for years. Cut to the bike, now minus its rider, with blood on the spokes and a basket of symbolic apples strewn across the road. Where is Joy? And why did Stan not report her disappearance for days? Hooked yet? If only the follow-through were as riveting. Peacock...

Liane Moriarty’s body of work is ripe for TV adaptations, and Peacock’s Apples Never Fall is a perfect illustration of why with a tale so juicy, you’d think it fell right off the tree.
This isn't your run-of-the-mill adaptation, either. This series is a complete package – a beginning, middle, and an oh-so-satisfying end. It's like Moriarty handed us the apple pie, not just the apples.
Every character gets their moment in the sun (or should I say spotlight?), evolving right before our very eyes. Talk about character development goals!
Showrunner and Executive Producer Melanie Marnich says Moriarty captures the essence of love, marriage, and family with raw honesty. “I think she had things to say about the contradictions within love and family, the complexity, the moral complexity within love and family that were just very true.”

In the opening scene of Apples Never Fall, Joy Delaney (Annette Bening) takes a leisurely bike ride through West Palm Beach, Florida. She’s got the time, having recently retired after decades of coaching tennis alongside her husband, Stan (Sam Neill). Joy cycles by palm trees and mansions and stops to browse stands of impossibly perfect fruit. But as she passes tennis courts bustling with players, her mouth curves into a wistful frown.
A sense of melancholy nags at the superficial idyll of Joy’s excursion, only to burst into outright dread when we see her bike overturned in the street, its back wheel still spinning and its frame splattered with blood, and Joy nowhere to be found. This scene introduces an alluring air of mystery regarding Joy’s inner life and the nature of her seemingly utopian environment. Apples Never Fall is the latest Peacock series, and one that does a terrific job of blending unexpected tones to produce a genuinely compelling (and surprisingly funny) mystery. The show opens with a disappearance, and only grows more complex as things play out. Focusing on the Delaney family in the years since their tennis dynasty has begun to fade, Apples Never Fall concerns the mysterious disappearance of family matriarch Joy (Annette Bening).

Oscar-nominated “Nyad” star Annette Bening on Peacock? Well, sometimes miracles do happen.
“Apples Never Fall” creator Melanie Marnich wanted to swing big when it came to pitching her take on the Liane Moriarty thriller novel adaptation. Despite never having showrun before, she was determined to cast A-lister Bening as Joy Delaney, a tennis pro coach matriarch who goes missing. While all signs point to her husband Stan (Sam Neill) as the most likely culprit, Joy’s case unlocks further Delaney family secrets swirling around their four children, played by Jake Lacy, Alison Brie, Conor Merrigan-Turner, and Essie Randles.
Bening, in fact, was at the center of Marnich’s initial pitch to Peacock.
“When [producer] David Heyman was looking for writers for the project I was like, ‘I’m going for it. I want this one,'” Marnich told IndieWire. “I think in my initial pitch to him, I was like, ‘I see Annette Bening as Joy.
