If the only April release was my top pick of the month it would be one of the finest lineups of the years, but thankfully there’s more to recommend. Featuring films about cinephilic obsession, subversive superhero tales, and what is sure to be at least one divisive big-screen near-future adventure, check out the list of must-sees below.
12 & 11. Kim’s Video (David Redmon and Ashley Sabin; April 5) and I Like Movies (Chandler Levack; April 8)
Anyone interested in physical media will appreciate a pair of films this month. Kim’s Video explores the strange story of the East Village establishment that housed around 55,000 DVDs while I Like Movies is a Canadian coming-of-age tale about a video store clerk who has bigger dreams in life, and is chockfull of cinephile-related humor that rang quite a familiar bell for this writer. John Fink said in his review of the former, “A sweeping documentary...

Julianna Margulies and Peter Gallagher will star in a new Delia Ephron play on Broadway this fall.
The new play, called Left on Tenth and based on Ephron’s memoir, will be directed by Susan Stroman, director and choreographer of The Producers. Daryl Roth will produce. A theater and dates for the Broadway engagement have not yet been announced.
The play follows Delia, who co-wrote You’ve Got Mail and the play Love, Loss and What I Wore with her sister, Nora Ephron, as she reconnects with a man from her past and “falls into her own romantic comedy,” as she battles cancer.
Marguiles, a star of The Morning Show and The Good Wife, has previously appeared on Broadway in the 2006 play Festen. Gallagher has ten Broadway credits, most recently starring in the 2015 revival of On the Twentieth Century, and is also known for his on-screen work, including on The O.C. and Grace and Frankie.

"For humanity to survive, 20% of the population must volunteer to die" in Humane, the feature film directorial debut of Caitlin Cronenberg. An exploration of the lethal lengths humanity (and one family in particular) will take to preserve itself in the face of a worldwide ecological disaster, Humane will arrive in select theaters on April 26th, and we have a look at the trailer ahead of its release.
Directed by Caitlin Cronenberg and written and produced by Michael Sparaga, Humane stars Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, Enrico Colantoni, Sebastian Chacon, Sirena Gulamgaus, Alanna Bale, and Peter Gallagher.
Synopsis: Humane takes place over a single day, mere months after a global ecological collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population. In a wealthy enclave, a recently retired newsman has invited his grown children to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in the nation’s new euthanasia program.

"We are engaged in a life or death struggle against our own extinction." Oh oh what do we have here?? IFC Films + Shudder have revealed the first official trailer for Humane, marking the feature directorial debut of Canadian photographer Caitlin Cronenberg. Yet another Cronenbrg getting into making horror films - yes she's the daughter of David Cronenberg, and brother of fellow filmmaker Brandon Cronenberg. Humane is a chilling dystopian satire opening in theaters first this April before it's streaming on Shudder in the summer. In the wake of a catastrophic environmental collapse that is forcing humanity to shed 20% of its population (are we headed here?), a family dinner erupts into chaos when a father's plan to enlist in the government's new euthanasia program goes horribly awry. Set over one night at this home. The film stars Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, Peter Gallagher, Enrico Colantoni, Sebastian Chacon, with Alanna Bale, and Sirena Gulamgaus.

When your surname’s a noun, adjective, and verb it behooves one to keep up the family legacy. As Brandon Cronenberg continued his feature-filmmaking career with last year’s Infinity Pool, Caitlin Cronenberg is staking a similar path with the dystopian satire Humane. Ahead of its April 26 theatrical release and Shudder debut on July 26, there is a trailer.
Starring Jay Baruchel (of the patriarch’s Cosmopolis), Emily Hampshire, and Peter Gallagher, Humane “takes place over the course of a single day, set months after a global ecological collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population, per the official synopsis. In a wealthy enclave, a recently retired newsman has invited his grown children to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in the nation’s new euthanasia program. But when the father’s plan goes horribly awry, tensions flare and chaos erupts among his children.

The daughter of an iconic horror filmmaker making a thriller about a father sacrificing himself? Just don’t call it meta.

Cronenberg is the daughter of body horror auteur David Cronenberg; her brother Brandon Cronenberg helmed “Possessor” and buzzy thriller “Infinity Pool.”

Annette Bening still likes to swim, despite the brutal eight hours a day she spent in the water for her Netflix film Nyad. Bening stars as Diana Nyad, who, at 64, became the first person ever to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. Bening trained for a year to perfect her stroke, and got to know Nyad herself, with Jodie Foster alongside her, starring as Nyad’s real-life friend and coach, Bonnie Stoll. “I swim all the time, it’s become part of my staying sane,” Bening says now, adding that she learned from Nyad that pushing oneself beyond what you thought you could do is “a way to know yourself, and that’s a way to expand your own idea about yourself in the world, and also increase your joy, and increase your appreciation.” Here, Bening looks back over some favorite moments in her career, from The Grifters,...

Thanks to streaming, The O.C. continues to find new audiences, two decades after its initial premiere. The show, which aired for four seasons during its broadcast run, wasn’t just a hit — it was a cultural phenomenon. Peter Gallagher, who was first-billed in the show’s ensemble cast, played a public defender who, after representing a troubled teen, petitioned to become his guardian. When he brought the teen (played by Benjamin McKenzie) into his upper-class community, that set up the culture clash conflicts that helped define the show. When The O.C. premiered in 2003, Gallagher told us that, from the start, he believed the show was truly something special. In honor of the Sundance Film Festival’s 40th Anniversary, The Hollywood Reporter is looking back at the reviews of some of the festival’s biggest premieres. Steven Soderbergh’s sex, lies and videotape established him as a filmmaking force and premiered at the fest when it was still called the United States Film Festival. THR’s original review is below:
John and Ann are on the fast track: He’s just been made partner, and she’s decorated their condo with exquisite good taste. They’re a Yuppie couple in all outward respects, but they don’t make love, and he’s fooling around with her sister. That’s the dark gist of this penetrating, moving and darkly funny independent feature. Voted the Audience Favorite at the United States Film Festival, sex, lies and videotape should win a distributor handsome notices as well as long Saturday-night lines of those in relationships– good,...

English actor Glynis Johns, who played the daffy suffragette mother Mrs. Banks in the classic film “Mary Poppins,” died Thursday at an assisted living home in Los Angeles, her manager Mitch Clem confirmed to Variety. She was 100.
“Glynis powered her way through life with intelligence, wit, and a love for performance, affecting millions of lives,” Clem said in a statement. “She entered my life early in my career and set a very high bar on how to navigate this industry with grace, class, and truth. Your own truth. Her light shined very brightly for 100 years. She had a wit that could stop you in your tracks powered by a heart that loved deeply and purely. Today is a somber day for Hollywood. Yes, this 1995 romcom is completely ridiculous – but try not being charmed by Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman
While You Were Sleeping is the feelgood movie I always find myself revisiting at this time of year. It is kind of ridiculous – but it is also funny, charming and utterly determined to lift your spirits.
Lucy Moderatz (Sandra Bullock) works as a token collector for the Chicago L train. Having lost her father the previous year, and with no family to speak of, she agrees to work over Christmas. Lucy has a crush on Peter (Peter Gallagher), a handsome commuter, who passes her kiosk every day in a whirlwind of perfect hair and 90s post-yuppie business attire.

“Welcome to The O.C., bitch!”
With those five immortal words, a cultural phenomenon was born.
The brainchild of a then-25-year-old Josh Schwartz, and guided by the steady hand of his producing partner Stephanie Savage, The O.C. ran for four chaotic seasons on Fox before sailing off into the sunset (or, in the case of poor Marissa Cooper, crashing in a fiery wreck).
A fish-out-of-water tale about Ryan Atwood (Benjamin McKenzie), a troubled kid from Chino who’s adopted by Sandy (Peter Gallagher), Kirsten (Kelly Rowan), and Seth Cohen (Adam Brody...

We thought there might be a chance of Humane slipping into the 2023 film fest schedule, but Caitlin Cronenberg did move into production only in October of last year on her feature debut – so one full year of post (with possible sci-fi elements) work makes sense for a January drop and perhaps Park City is fertile Cronenberg ground as her brother Brandon has preemed here with his last two features Possessor in 2020 and Infinity Pool in 2023. Featuring Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, Peter Gallagher, Sebastian Chacon, Alanna Bale and Sirena Gulamgaus, production took place in Hamilton. Crimes of the Future‘s Doug Koch is the cinematographer here.…...

Can it really be 20 years since “The O.C.” premiered on Fox? The young actors of the series, Benjamin McKenzie, Adam Brody, Mischa Barton and Rachel Bilson quickly became in-demand stars and the theme song “California” by Phantom Planet became a top ten hit in several countries while also reaching 35 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart.
The bagel-centric series also introduced us to “Chrismukkah” and showcased bands from The Killers to Modest Mouse.
Several members of the cast went on to lead their own series and films and others have popped up on hit shows from “How I Met Your Mother” to “Grey’s Anatomy.” Here’s what they’ve been up to since “The O.C.” signed off in February 2007.

Benjamin McKenzie, who played O.C. newbie Ryan Atwood, went on to star as an LA cop on TNT’s “Southland” and as James Gordon on Fox’s Batman prequel series “Gotham.

On August 5, 2003, the Fox network premiered The O.C., a teen drama set against the lush backdrop of Newport Beach, California, about the chaos that ensues when wealthy lawyer Sandy Cohen (Peter Gallagher) takes Ryan Atwood (Ben McKenzie), a kid from the wrong side of the tracks, to live with his family in their huge McMansion. The show was an instant sensation, making stars out of McKenzie, Mischa Barton (as fragile Newport princess Marissa Cooper), Adam Brody (as Sandy’s nerdy son Seth), and Rachel Bilson (as Seth’s forever crush...

The “After” series has had a long journey. Starting as a One Direction Harry Styles fan fiction published on Wattpad by Anna Todd, the story was later reformatted to become an original novel series detailing the tumultuous relationship between college student Tessa Young and tortured bad boy Hardin Scott. Five years after the novel was published, the first book was turned into the film “After” starring Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Tessa and Hardin.
Since 2019 there have been four installments in the “After” movie series with one coming out consistently every year.
The story started as a college romance but over the course of the films, Tessa and Hardin’s relationship has undergone a series of dramatic changes. The first film connected the two over their love of literature and saw Tessa opening herself up to try and make a relationship with Hardin work. “After We Collided” introduced...

Truth Be Told Season 3 is darker and more personal than ever.
Gabrielle Union stars with Octavia Spencer as Eva, a school principal who has carried deep scars from her youth that directly impact her to this day and seep into the work she does with her students.
On Truth Be Told Season 3 Episode 6, Eva was weighing whether or not to bear her soul on Poppy's podcast.
Her thought was that "The ones that go before us make us brave" and on Truth Be Told Season 3 Episode 7, Eva gets down to business.
Eva even said it herself -- she is not the perfect victim.
Poppy will be taking a significant risk in sharing Eva's words, but Eva will be taking a greater one in revealing her darkest secret for everyone to see.

If it’s Tuesday, this must be Election Day in a year when democracy itself is on the ballot. It’s a moment that Jefferson Smith – the naive but idealistic young senator played by Jimmy Stewart – could have appreciated in the Oscar-winning 1939 classic “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” from director Frank Capra. It tops the list of 25 movies that this Gold Derby editor singles out as exemplary staples of the political genre over the past 80-plus years. Most originated on the big screen, but a few were made-for-tv.
Why bring this to you today? Think of it as a distraction tactic at a time when so many of us are overloaded with anxiety over an especially consequential election that will determine control of Congress. The list features biopics, satires, historical dramas and journalism hybrid thrillers as well as fictitious allegories.

Grey’s Anatomy may be all about what’s new in Season 19, but it’s still remembering its past. Greg Germann will be returning as Dr. Tom Koracick for a guest spot in the episode airing on November 3, according to TVLine. That episode will also see Jesse Williams returning as Dr. Jackson Avery. (Williams will also be directing the episode.) They both initially left in the same Season 17 episode, both heading for Boston; Jackson took over the Catherine Fox Foundation, and Koracick went to work with him. Both have also been back since, with Koracick last seen as part of last season’s storyline involving Dr. Hamilton (Peter Gallagher). As for what brings Koracick back in November in “When I Get to the Border,” he “reaches out to Catherine (who is in Boston) regarding a personal matter,” according to the report. This comes as Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) will also...

Billie Lourd, Colin Hanks and Aisling Bea have boarded the transatlantic comedy “And Mrs,” which is set to start shooting in east London this fall.
The British feature centers on Gemma, a woman living in London (Bea) whose American fiancé Nathan (Hanks) dies shortly before their wedding day. When, with some encouragement from her sister-in-law, she decides to go ahead and marry him anyway, she has to overcome public opinion, the law of the land and even her own family’s objections.
Bea is best known for “This Way Up,” “Living With Yourself” and “Doctor Who,” and will soon be headlining the much-anticipated film based on the songs of Take That, “Greatest Day.”
Hanks was recently seen in Paramount+ drama “The Drama,” and will soon star in Peacock’s true crime limited drama series, “A Friend of the Family.”

Spoken English evolved such useful phrases as “blah blah blah” and “yada yada yada” so that in conversation we don’t have to suffer through numbingly repetitive descriptions of the perfectly obvious. Sadly, no such shorthand exists in the “After” universe, which, now on its fourth instalment, seems dedicated to spinning the already vanishingly wispy romance between good-girl Tessa and bad-boy Hardin, YA fiction’s most colossally boring golden couple, into ever thinner straw. After a placeholder second film (“After We Collided”) and a wheel-spinning third (“After We Fell”), the new episode — which itself ramps up to a face-palming “to be continued” — can’t even charitably be said to be blah. It’s the space between the blahs.

One year ago, the team behind NBC’s “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” was devastated when the broadcast network pulled the plug on the musical series after two seasons. At the time, the show’s cast, as well as creator Austin Winsberg, were vocal about how sad they were about the untimely end; after pitching it around and hoping for a pickup, it seemed to be dead in the water.
And then the Roku Channel came around and offered a chance to wrap it up in the shape of a movie; the two-hour holiday pic focused on the Clarke family’s first Christmas without patriarch Mitch (Peter Gallagher), who died at the end of the first season.
“We had ended Season 2 on a massive cliffhanger, but we had many new stories we still wanted to tell,” says Winsberg. “To be able to create a resolution, give the fans clarity and live with...

After “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” was canceled by NBC last summer, showrunner Austin Winsberg was given a unique opportunity to offer closure to fans in the form of a Christmas movie on an entirely different network. The Roku Channel came to the show’s rescue and Winsberg was tasked with developing a holiday-themed movie that could work on its own while also continuing the storylines of Season 2, such as Max (Skylar Astin) suddenly developing Zoey’s (Jane Levy) musical powers. “It had to check a lot of boxes, and then on top of that, I didn’t want to treat it like two episodes of the show,” says Winsberg in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “I wanted to treat it like an actual movie.”

When “Grace and Frankie” debuted in May of 2015, it’s doubtful even creators Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris or stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin would have expected the show to have such long-lasting sucess. But the Netflix comedy was a juggernaut hit for the streaming platform, and kind of a unicorn in terms of its longevity. Upon its final season, which arrives this month, “Grace and Frankie” is the longest-running Netflix original series in the history of the service. But as the old adage says, all good things must come to an end.

Netflix on Thursday dropped a full-length trailer for the final 12 episodes of the heartwarming comedy series.
The trailer is essentially a celebration of our titular leads' relationship, which has taken many forms throughout the seven seasons.
Whatever anyone says about their friendship, it cannot be denied that they love each other deeply, and their lives were forever changed when they were bonded forever.
"Seven years ago, Grace and Frankie’s lives turned upside down when their longtime husbands left them for… each other," the logline teases.
"Both sparring partners and partners-in-crime, Grace and Frankie formed an unlikely and unbreakable bond as they faced uncertain futures head-on, and hand-in-hand."
"They’ve laughed together, cried together, did shrooms together, and twice-over became successful entrepreneurs together," it continues.
"A history-making 94 episodes later, Grace and Frankie continue to show themselves,...

“It was a crazy ride but I’d rather take a crazy ride with you than a normal ride with anybody else.”
So says Grace (Jane Fonda), as she and best roomie Frankie (Lily Tomlin) prepare for the end of Grace and Frankie, Netflix’s longest-running original series. By the time it’s all over this season, the comedy from Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris will have made a whopping 94 episodes.
The trailer for the seventh and final season that returns April 29 looks back at the good times, and those memorable moments when Grace dropped the F-bomb to make an important point. For those who haven’t sampled the laugher that also stars Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston (and seriously why have you not?), the comedy is about a pair of divorcées (masterfully played by Fonda and Tomlin) whose husbands left them to marry each other.
