"I know you think you found something out there. Or something found him..." Vertical has revealed a full official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Refuge, made by the acclaimed Finnish action filmmaker Renny Harlin - also of The Strangers; Chapter 1. Apparently he was already in Bulgaria shooting Ninja Fury when local producers contacted him about making Refuge next. After a mysterious attack from a malevolent demon during his tour of duty in Afghanistan, Sergeant Rick Pedroni returns home a changed man, and more dangerous than ever. This is similar to many other solider-returns-home-damaged films but with a supernatural Ptsd twist. The film stars Aston McAuley as Rick, Sophie Simnet as his wife Kate, Raza Jaffrey, Johanna Harlin, Shervin Alenabi, Atanas Srebrev, Max Kraus, and Jason Flemyng. This mostly looks like generic horror mashed up with a soldier story, though it does have some scary scenes in it. // Continue...

The next collaboration between Jason Statham and David Ayer (with a Sylvester Stallone script) – Levon’s Trade – is now shooting, with further casting announced.
Earlier this year we were treated to a rip-roaringly good time when director David Ayer and star Jason Statham brought us The Beekeeper. You can catch our review for that film here, but in short, it was lots of fun and following a theatrical run where it grossed north of $150m, it likely made a profit for all involved.
As such, the production companies behind The Beekeeper have once again acquired the services of Ayer and Statham and are hoping to repeat the trick once again, this time with Levon’s Trade.
As with The Beekeeper, Amazon MGM has agreed to handle distribution in the US, and none other than Sylvester Stallone has adapted the screenplay from Chuck Dixon’s novel.

Deadline reports that principal photography has kicked off on Levon’s Trade, an action thriller starring Jason Statham. The project has also added a few new members to the cast, with David Harbour (Stranger Things), Michael Peña (Narcos: Mexico), Jason Flemyng (Boiling Point) and Arianna Rivas (The Harvest) signing on to appear in Levon’s Trade.
David Ayer is directing Levon’s Trade from a screenplay by none other than Sylvester Stallone, with revisions by Ayer. The project is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Chuck Dixon. The book is the first installment of the Levon Cade series, which consists of eleven novels. With so much material, this could easily be another franchise starter for Statham.

Many of us were excited about the prospect of The New Mutants a few years ago. The sales pitch of an “X-Men horror movie” sounded like a match made in heaven. As often happens, the film that was released was far more of a pillow fight than the cage match I’d hoped for.
But as we excitedly embrace the kid in us with the release of X-Men ’97 on Disney+, I couldn’t help but imagine a more adult side of that universe. What if the X-Men franchise embraced the opportunity to lean into the horror genre? I’m talking about the body horror of its mutants, the cruelness of its villains, and the potential for superhumanly violent finishers that would make Mortal Kombat blush. With all that in mind, I took a look through the original X-Men films on a horror scavenger hunt and found some pretty cool trinkets along the way.

Exclusive: Compelling Pictures is coming on to produce and finance the high-concept psychological horror thriller The Blur, written and being directed by emerging director Joe Miale. Denis O’Sullivan and Jeff Kalligheri are producing for Compelling, alongside Scott Carr and Josh Crook. Carr brought the project to Compelling back in 2020 as a pitch and Miale wrote the script.
The film follows a visually-impaired family tormented by a ghost only seen by those who have severe myopia. It introduces a villain named Smudge to the horror pantheon, and will use innovative visual techniques–largely in-camera–to bring the terrifying character to life. Producers cited a 2021 study by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness estimated that 43 million people worldwide are considered legally blind, while 295 million people worldwide live with moderate-to-severe visual impairment. And also noted the World Health Organization has estimated that approximately 2.2 billion people worldwide have some level of near or distance vision impairment.

“A Town Called Malice” on Sky Max is an experience that perfectly evokes the nostalgia of the 1980s and a charming vibrancy. The eighties-themed plot of “A Town Called Malice” is just one of the numerous elements that greatly contribute to the old wine in a new bottle allure. Every episode is titled after one of the most popular songs from that time period, such as “Cruel Summer” or “I Want to Know What Love Is,” which will undoubtedly attract aficionados of eighties music in a big way. In addition to fascinating revelations, as the plot develops, the series has a unique attractiveness thanks to its colorful cinematography and costume designs, which may compete with “Stranger Things”‘ outfit designs. The plot drags a little bit in the first six episodes, but it quickly picks up steam and makes for a fantastic viewing experience.

Is there any corner of the globe left untouched by the British crime drama? If it’s not Kenneth Branagh stalking through the inky expanses of the Swedish winter, or Roger Allam quaffing rosé in Provence, it’s Ralf Little, Ben Miller, Kris Marshall or Ardal O’Hanlon nicking killers (and evading taxes) in Guadeloupe. Now, British crime turns its attention to the Costa del Sol with A Town Called Malice (Sky Max). a pulpy, blood-soaked vision of Brits abroad. “Death arrives on the Costa,” growls the local Spanish detective. “I like it.”

If you love the 1980s – specifically, the neon-lit, Talking Heads-blaring, Delboy swagger of the 1980s Cockney – then Sky’s new crime thriller A Town Called Malice is right up your street.
Meet the Lords
Created by The Sweeney’s Nick Love, this eight-part drama centres on the Lord family, a South London gang whose criminal heyday might be behind them, but who are still up for causing trouble. After a spot of bother with a rival gang (and leaving a policeman for dead), they flee to Spain’s Costa del Sol to lay low, and in amongst the pina coladas and palm trees realise they have a chance to recapture their former glory and become criminal top dogs once more.
The series premiered on Sky Max at 9pm on Thursday 16th March, and the full box-set is already available to watch on Now.

Exclusive: Emirati-British filmmaker Ali F. Mostafa has revealed he is developing a new feature spinning off his 2009 breakout debut City Of Life.
Revolving around three characters from different walks of life in Mostafa’s home city of Dubai, the original was a local breakout hit in the U.A.E. in 2009 and it remains one of the territory’s best-known films, both at home and internationally.
“I felt it was time to make a sequel because I started realizing how Dubai has changed so much. From 2009 to where we are today, not only is Dubai structurally, and physically changed, but when you go out you feel it has changed,” said Mostafa.
“It’s a lot more populated. We’re a lot more open to things we weren’t open to before. The region’s changed. There is less censorship in certain areas.”

20th Century Studios is developing a reboot of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for Hulu, Deadline can confirm.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was a fantasy pic released by 20th Century Fox in 2003, based on the comic book series of the same name from writer Alan Moore and artist Kevin O’Neill. Set in an alternate Victorian Age world, it followed a group of famous contemporary fantasy, science fiction, and adventure characters—including Captain Nemo, Dorian Gray and Tom Sawyer—as they teamed up on a secret mission.
The League of Extraordinary Gentleman comics were first introduced in 1999. Stephen Norrington directed the original film adaptation, starring Sean Connery, which was reputed to be the reason he retired from acting—so miserable was his experience on set. James Dale Robinson wrote the script, with Naseeruddin Shah, Peta Wilson, Tony Curran, Stuart Townsend, Shane West, Jason Flemyng and Richard Roxburgh rounding out the cast.

A Violent Man is Ross McCall’s directorial debut from his own script, and stars Craig Fairbrass, Stephen Odubola (Blue Story), Jason Flemyng and Zoe Tapper (Liar).

More often than not, one-take films struggle to justify their gimmick. Whether shot in one go or utilizing an intensive editing process to appear like so, the technique almost always threatens to overshadow whatever story is at the center rather than emphasizing it. Used correctly, it can prove immersive in the exact same way as a theatrical production—breaking down barriers between performer and audience, who can see their work unfold in real-time. Unfortunately, the impracticality of telling a story this way is usually highlighted via several scenes of actors slowly walking between filming locations.
Boiling Point is among the finer examples of the one-take movie. Set within the confines of an increasingly claustrophobic location, director Philip Barantini’s film succeeds because it understands the limitations of shooting in this manner, using them to its advantage rather than trying to expand upon what something in this style could achieve. Thus...

"I can't give you what I haven't got." Saban Films has released an official trailer for Boiling Point, hot on the heels of its debut at the 2021 London Film Festival earlier this month. An emotionally scarred London chef struggles to keep it together in this formally extraordinary and beautifully acted single-take thriller. Set in "one of the hottest restaurants in London", enter the relentless pressure of a restaurant kitchen as a head chef wrangles his team on the busiest day of the year. From Lff: "A smart character study, a realistic slice of life and a vivid window into a highly pressurised and strange working world, Barantini's film makes superb use of its formal conceit, an excellent ensemble cast and terrific central performance to deliver something genuinely nerve-jangling and exciting." The excellent Stephen Graham stars as Chef Andy Jones, along with Vinette Robinson, Jason Flemyng, Alice Feetham, Malachi Kirby, Izuka Hoyle,...

There was a time — way before the reality-tv chaos of “Top Chef,” “Hell’s Kitchen” and their ilk, and the ubiquitous trend for open restaurant kitchens — when most of us didn’t think all that much about the labor and drama behind the scenes of eating out. Now, we probably overcook the theater of fine dining in our imaginations: Not every perfectly done steak has been screamed over as part of the seasoning.
After a year when many of us have missed out on the restaurant experience, along comes “Boiling Point” to re-whet our appetite for its flash and sizzle. Presented as one continuous 90-minute take, Philip Barantini’s thoroughly absorbing film plunges the audience into one hectic Christmastime service at a high-end restaurant in East London, juggling a dizzy array of courses, characters and subplots that range from plausibly high-stakes to wildly contrived.

This year’s Karlovy Vary saw the premiere of a dizzying single-take drama featuring a potent lead performance from Graham as a chef enduring a nightmarish evening
Philip Barantini serves up a single-take headlong nightmare in this drama set in a restaurant, starring the formidable Stephen Graham as an up-and-coming chef called Andy who is running on pure adrenaline, and maybe something more in that water bottle of his. Without any cuts to darkness or a camera flash, Barantini follows the dizzying continuous action in the kitchens and out in the dining room as the pressure begins to take its toll on everyone. And if it looks a bit like TV sometimes, that could be because cookery shows with stressed-out gobby chefs yelling at people are all over television. One of those shows was actually called Ramsay’s Boiling Point.
