Grey’s Anatomy may have a lot in common with long-running hospital shows like ER on the surface. But TV showrunner Shonda Rimes revealed the slight details that made them very different from each other.
‘ER’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ focused on two completely different things Alex Kingston, Paul McCrane, Ming-Na, Michael Michele, Anthony Edwards, Goran Visnjic, Noah Wyle, Maura Tierney, Eriq La Salle, Sherry Stringfield, Laura Innes | NBC/Getty Images
ER and Grey’s Anatomy would inevitably have things in common, with both being successful medical dramas. But the genesis of each show was different. ER was created by Michael Crichton, and was based on his own experiences going to law school. Meanwhile, after watching a TV show, Rhimes was inspired to make Grey’s Anatomy.
Before Rhimes came up with Grey’s, she was actually working on a war series. But current events dissuaded her from going any further with the show.

Since 2021, Giancarlo Esposito has held the distinction of being the most-recognized Black performer in the history of the Best Drama Supporting Actor Emmy category. After coming up short on all of his past nominations for “Breaking Bad” (2012), “Better Call Saul” (2019-2020) and “The Mandalorian” (2021), he now has a shot at finally triumphing on his potential third “Better Call Saul” bid. This would not only finally make the six-season AMC drama an Emmy-winning show, but would also make Esposito his category’s first Black winner.
Esposito’s appearance in the final season of “Better Call Saul” serves as the conclusion of a performance that had begun 13 years earlier on “Breaking Bad.” Although the newer series mainly functioned as a backstory for Jimmy “Saul Goodman” McGill (Bob Odenkirk), it naturally fleshed out many more featured “Breaking Bad” characters, including Esposito’s Gus Fring. In his last moments on screen, the narcotics kingpin...

Like everyone else hunkering down last December, Gloria Reuben needed something fun to look forward to in the new year. Her manager rang: After pairing Desperate Housewives’ Teri Hatcher and James Denton in a holiday movie, Hallmark Channel wanted to reunite her with her former ER love interest Eriq La Salle for a spring romance in A Second Chance at Love. “I was like, ‘Wow, that’s wild!’” says the actress, who earned two Emmy nominations playing physician assistant Jeanie Boulet opposite La Salle’s Dr. Peter Benton on the hospital drama 25 years ago. “I needed to feel good. Something light and flirty? Yes, please!” In A Second Chance at Love, the two star as divorced couple Brenda and Jack, whose adult daughter Alicia (Alvina August), a self-proclaimed “love doctor,” signs them up on a dating app to find new matches. The exes, who haven’t seen each other since...

For the first time since they shared the screen on NBC hospital drama “ER,” Eriq La Salle and Gloria Reuben are teaming up as co-stars. The two star in Hallmark’s “A Second Chance at Love,” alongside Alvina August and Jarod Joseph, Hallmark announced Wednesday.
The actors will play divorced parents Jack (La Salle) and Brenda (Reuben) to daughter Alicia (August), and in-laws to Alicia’s husband, Arnold (Joseph). According to a logline from Hallmark, the younger couple’s marriage is “picture perfect, however, there is something amiss.” While Arnold is ready to expand their brood, Alicia has been hesitant. “Rather than face the problem head on, Alicia, the self-proclaimed ‘love doctor,’ immerses herself in her divorced parents Jack (La Salle) and Brenda’s (Reuben) dating affairs by setting them each up on a blind date dating app,” per the network.

Sometimes, you're right where you need to be with your television viewing.
For me, that means that I've been watching Gloria Reuben and Eriq La Salle nightly with my rewatch of NBC's ER.
Now, Hallmark is offering something completely different as Reuben and La Salle reconnect for A Second Chance at Love, airing on Saturday, March 26 on Hallmark Channel.
For those of you who watched ER, you know that La Salle played resident and surgeon Peter Benton, who wasn't always beloved by his coworkers.
Reuben's Jeanie Boulet, a married Pa, fell for Peter, and the two had a torrid affair in which she broke his heart.
A Second Chance at Love might not give Peter and Jeanie a second chance, but now, decades later, Rueben and La Salle will be sharing the screen once again with a story about reigniting old passions.

Are Dr. Peter Benton and Jeanie Boulet getting A Second Chance at Love? Not exactly, but that is the title of the new Hallmark Channel movie that will reunite ER‘s Eriq La Salle and Gloria Reuben onscreen for the first time since the NBC medical drama (1994-2009). For fans of Coming to America, one of the biggest joys of Craig Brewer’s recently released sequel, Coming 2 America, was seeing the multiple nostalgic nods to the original hit. Actress Vanessa Bell Calloway, last seen hopping on one foot as Eddie Murphy’s bride-to-be, was still hopping. Peaches and Sugar Cube, two rappers who made a brief yet memorable club appearance 33 years ago, re-emerged here for the climax. But with Eriq La Salle not returning to portray the Soul Glo heir Darryl Jenks, one planned scene never made it past the ideation stage.

I don’t envy the job of anyone tasked with taking a classic Eighties comedy — Coming to America, say — and making a decades-later sequel that tries to please its guaranteed audience. Namely, everyone who loved the original, people who’ve rewatched it a million times, who have Soul Glo memes saved on their phones, who know every word to Sexual Chocolate’s song who — as in my case — grew up in families where Coming to America was probably the only consensus movie that everyone from my grandmother down to myself...

Amazon Prime has finalized acquisition of worldwide rights to “Coming 2 America,” the long awaited sequel to the 1988 comedy classic starring Eddie Murphy, and will release it to subscribers globally on March 5, 2021, the company announced Friday.
Paramount originally slated the movie for a Dec. 22 opening in theaters. But after the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the year’s theatrical release schedule, the studio began talks in October to sell “Coming 2 America” to Amazon in a deal worth around $125 million.
The sequel, which reunites Murphy with his “Dolemite Is My Name” director Craig Brewer, is set 30 years after the original as Murphy’s Prince Akeem prepares to ascend to the throne of the fictional African nation of Zamunda — only to discover that he has a long-lost son named Lavelle who lives in Queens.
To respect his father’s dying wish, he returns to America to find Lavelle and groom him as the new crown prince.

George Clooney has been named GQ magazine’s Icon of the Year ahead of the upcoming Netflix release of his new directorial effort “The Midnight Sky,” and the accompanying cover story reveals the Oscar winner once wrote a letter to a film critic who shaded his filmmaking skills. Unacceptable as it might be, Jeremy Dick of MovieWeb has gone ahead to confirm that Eriq La Salle from the original movie won’t be making an appearance as the obnoxious character of Darryl, who was a certified jerk and kind of a wuss as well. This means that there won’t likely be that much mention of Soul Glo either in the movie, or so we can hope since the Jheri curl look has come and gone thankfully, being used only by a few people throughout the world still. NBC’s #OneChicago franchise is taking on its scariest, nastiest threat yet: a deadly bacteria that wreaks havoc on the Windy City in this Wednesday’s mega crossover between Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and Chicago P.D.
For the first responders, “there’s real terror about what’s going on,” says Fire showrunner Derek Haas, who came up with the idea for the three-hour event with über producer Dick Wolf. “[When] you’re trained to fight fires, you know what you’re dealing with for the most part. You have the right equipment on to deal with temperatures and those things.

331 episodes. 124 Emmy nominations. 49 million viewers. One George Clooney. 25 years ago, ER made its debut on NBC, introducing viewers to the emergency room doctors at County General Hospital in Chicago. The medical drama would launch the careers of George Clooney, Noah Wyle and Julianna Margulies, going on to run for 15 seasons, making it the second longest running medical drama in TV history. When it began in 1994, ER, which also starred Top Gun star Anthony Edwards, Sherry Stringfield and Eriq La Salle, was actually an underdog, with most industry insiders assuming CBS' Chicago Hope would win the battle of the big medical procedural; ER ended up becoming the No. 1 show on TV, almost hitting 50...

If the Emmys love you enough to give you Best Drama Series, you’d think they’d love you enough to shower you with acting awards, especially with an ensemble cast as deep as “Game of Thrones.” Alas, only one actor has ever won for the show: Peter Dinklage. This year is the last chance for his co-stars to join him in the winner’s circle. But even if no one does, “Thrones” will be in good company. “ER” and “Mad Men” couldn’t get more than one regular cast member to the podium either.

When all was said and done the show ran for a whopping 15 years and picked up a slew of nominations across acting categories, but the only time a regular cast member won was in the very first season,...

Vanessa Marquez, a series regular actress on NBC’s hit drama “ER” from 1994-1997, was shot and killed by a South Pasadena Pd officer during a welfare check early Thursday afternoon. She was 49.
During the welfare check at the 1100 Block of Fremont Avenue, Marquez was having seizures and possibly suffering from mental health issues, Lieutenant Joe Mendoza of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau told TheWrap. After more than 90 minutes of officers trying to convince an uncooperative Marquez to seek care, Mendoza says the actress and South Pasadena resident pulled out a weapon and pointed it at police officers. Though it was later identified to be a Bb gun, Mendoza said it was a replica of a semi-automatic handgun, and police believed the weapon to be a real firearm.
An officer or officers shot Mendoza, who was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” executive producer Bruce Miller was an aspiring writer, living in Los Angeles, when the landmark medical drama “ER” premiered on NBC in 1994. The show’s pilot upended almost everything he had been taught, up until then, about writing a script.
“You never know what’s going to happen, you never know how it’s going to resolve, and you don’t know how long it’s going to last,” he said. “That lesson taught be a lot about ‘Handmaid’s.’ If you lay out the story in the first scene, people are going to be bored. They’re too good at predicting, and they’ve seen a lot of drama. Tell the story the way it should be told.”
IndieWire recently sat down with Miller to discuss the success of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and the pressure that comes with so much attention — and Emmys — in its first season.
