The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.
“Beef” tied with “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” for the most nominations among all non-regular series programs with 13. It’s presently in the lead among Gold Derby voters in the limited series race with 16/5 combined odds. Its star Ali Wong is also in first place among limited lead actresses,...

Robin Thede of A Black Lady Sketch Show and Bridget Everett of Somebody Somewhere have taken over for Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the comedy queens of HBO. Here, Deadline checked in with multi-hyphenates about their start in Hollywood and how they made their visions a reality.
Robin Thede
After majoring in broadcast journalism at Northwestern University to keep her parents happy —“I was going to move to Los Angeles to pursue comedy professionally, but my parents were so scared,”—Thede began her career by writing for shows like Clunkers, Real Husbands of Hollywood and The Queen Latifah Show before becoming the first Black woman to serve as head writer on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore in 2015. Two years later, she launched her own late-night show on HBO called The Rundown with Robin Thede. “I never had any intentions on being a journalist by trade,” says Thede. “I was being a...

A vampire’s birthday party had us feeling festive this week on What We Do in the Shadows… but then a shocking exit spoiled all the fun.
Thursday’s episode begins with Nandor held captive in the vampires’ subterranean prison cell after his fitness-inspired escape last week. Nadja says he’s “brainwashed,” but an exhausted Nandor lists off all of his roommates’ many shortcomings before declaring: He’s taking a “super slumber.” That’s a sort of vampire hibernation where they sleep for up to 300 years, waking up to a (hopefully) completely different world. As Nandor says his farewells, Nadja weeps,...

Robin Thede is used to “firsts.” From 2015–16, she was the head writer for the first season and a half of “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore,” the first African-American woman to hold that position on any late-night talk show; the first black woman to write for the White House Correspondents Dinner; and of course, the first Black woman to create, showrun, write, and star in a sketch comedy series, HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” which itself made history as the first sketch show to feature an all-Black woman cast and writers room — a welcome respite from other late-night shows that tend to overlook Black women’s narratives.
Although for Thede, these accomplishments are all bittersweet, and a reflection of the kind of progress that still needs to made in an industry that’s long been dominated by stories by, about, and for white men. “It’s my badge of honor,...

Anyone who has watched CSI: Miami from 2010 to 2013 will recognize her. So would those Tina Turner fans who have seen ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It?’, or sat through the war picture ‘Sugar Hill’. She even choreographed Whitney Houston’s world tour from 1988 to 1992. In fact, it seems that Khandi Alexander has been in the business all the time…maybe you don’t recognize the name, but I guarantee you that you have been entertained by her work at some point in her life, whether you knew it or not. The Seal Team doesn’t like what it hears in this exclusive sneak peek from Part 2 of the “All Along the Watchtower” nail-biter.
When last we tuned into the CBS action-drama (Wednesdays at 9/8c), U.S. Ambassador Nicole Marsden (played by guest star Khandi Alexander) had asked Bravo Team to accompany her as she sought to broker peace between two Yemeni tribes. But what was to be, at best, a routine diplomatic mission pretty literally exploded, when her sitdown with one of the tribes’ Imams was interrupted by a rival tribe’s all-out, heavily armed assault on the dignitary compound.

This article contains full spoilers for this week’s episode of The Deuce.
When David Simon describes an actor’s performance as “one of the best I ever got on a show,” the compliment demands attention. From The Wire all the way through The Deuce, Simon has helped to make stars out of unknowns (Idris Elba, Michael B. Jordan), has gotten remarkable work from established names (Oscar Isaac, Maggie Gyllenhaal), and has assembled a brilliant repertory company of character actors (Wendell Pierce, Khandi Alexander, Clarke Peters). There’s nothing radical about the structure of HBO’s new comedy series “A Black Lady Sketch Show”; it’s a series of pop culture parodies and send-ups of current events. But the series has its own sharp-witted, affable point of view and provides a necessary showcase for more black women performers than have ever appeared on a single show, led by a core cast that includes creator Robin Thede, Ashley Nicole Black, Gabrielle Dennis and Quinta Brunson, who are all funny, dynamic, and unapologetically provocative.
It’s a point of view that comes primarily from the show’s creator and co-star, Robin Thede, who was the head writer on Larry Wilmore’s “The Nightly Show” – Wilmore is among the famous faces who appear in the series – and oversaw “The Rundown with Robin Thede”, which was also groundbreaking for late-night television, airing on Bet.

Viola Davis’ fourth consecutive Emmy nomination is not for her leading role on “How to Get Away With Murder,” but as Best Drama Guest Actress for her guest role on sister series “Scandal.” On March 1st of this year, we saw the two ABC dramas crossover in a two-hour event that was widely praised by fans of both shows. Hence, Davis is still nominated for playing the same character (Annalise Keating), just not for the show she was nominated for the last three years and even won for in 2015. If she wins, she’ll be the first guest actress to win for “Scandal,” which ended its seven-season run earlier this year.
Joining DAvis in this Emmy category are her on-screen mother Cicely Tyson (“How to Get Away With Murder”), Kelly Jenrette (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Cherry Jones (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Diana Rigg (“Game of Thrones”) and Samira Wiley (“The...

Can an adaptation of a 65-year-old book feel too futuristic? That’s the dilemma that HBO’s “Fahrenheit 451” TV movie, directed and adapted by “99 Homes'” Ramin Bahrani, presents to us.
On the one hand, much of the world it presents is familiar, especially to those who read Ray Bradbury’s 1953 novel. The core story is there: Guy Montag (Michael B. Jordan) works as a fireman in a dystopian future where, instead of putting out fires, he starts them. He, alongside a team led by Captain Beatty (Michael Shannon), seeks to find remaining books and scraps of literature in the country, and burn them in a spectacle of fire. The fires are broadcast to the citizens, who watch and cheer as the written word is destroyed.
Guy, as our protagonist, grows increasingly skeptical of this, and an encounter with a book-hoarding woman who burns herself alive leaves him questioning everything.

Cancel your summer plans: TV is offering plenty of reasons to stay inside. Even when the weather’s great — and not a humid trap for blood-sucking insects and sticky clothes — there’s simply too much great, new programming popping in to spend all your time away from the big screen.
To kick the season off, Netflix is releasing a slew of much-anticipated original programs in May; one of which was announced so recently IndieWire didn’t have time to include it on this list. As the months tick by and the temperature climbs, look for cool new dramas from HBO, AMC, and Paramount Network. And if you need one more binge before summer’s end, Amazon, Hulu, and NBC have several options in mind.
Below, IndieWire has rounded up all the new shows coming your way in the summer of 2018, including first seasons and returning favorites, as well as a few choice movies,...

Although Larry David had impersonated Senator Bernie Sanders brilliantly multiple times on “Saturday Night Live,” the men’s resemblance was written off as nothing but a joke. After all, they’re both older Jewish men from New York. Of course they’re similar.
On Tuesday night’s premiere of PBS’ “Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.” though, they discovered they have far more in common than just looks. After running a DNA test on the two, host Gates revealed that they share significantly long sequences of identical DNA. In short, they’re related.

“What the hell?!” David said upon learning the news. “That is really funny. That is amazing! Alright. Cousin Bernie.”
In a separate interview, Sanders had a similarly delighted but stunned reaction. “You’re kidding. That is unbelievable.

The facts are all-too-clearly etched in our minds: On Patriots' Day, April 15, 2013, near the finish line of the Boston marathon, two pressure cooker bombs exploded about 12 seconds apart, killing three civilians and injuring an estimated 264 others causing the loss of blood and limbs. The subsequent 100-hour manhunt for the terrorist bombers, Chechen brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, is enacted in Patriots Day, a raw, riveting, emotionally wrenching docudrama from Peter Berg and producer-star Mark Wahlberg. As a director, Peter Berg isn't exactly subtle with his patriotism. Whether it's with the FBI embedded in the middle east (The Kingdom), a small Texas football town (Friday Night Lights), service members real (Lone Survivor) and fictional (Battleship), or civilian engineers facing a disaster (Deepwater Horizon), his movies proudly wave the American flag. It's only natural that his next movie is called Patriots Day. Co-written by Berg, Patriot's Day is about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing as seen through the eyes of the first responders and follow-up government teams that orchestrated the manhunt for the two bombing suspects. Mark Wahlberg, Kevin Bacon, John Goodman, Michelle Monaghan, J.K. Simmons and Khandi Alexander star. Patriots Day hits...

Sunday’s Quantico simultaneously gave terrorism suspect Alex a tiny sliver of hope — though she doesn’t know it yet — and put her in the most precarious situation we’ve seen so far.
The hour saw Caleb find (and then, at the behest of his father, bury) the first evidence supporting Agent Parrish’s innocence in the Grand Central bombing. And later, realizing that the feds were closing in after last week’s shootout in Queens, Alex tricked an injured Ryan into boarding a helicopter to safety, then walked into FBI Central to turn herself in.

She previously appeared in 11 episodes...
