Tammy Faye, the Elton John-Jake Shears-James Graham musical about televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, will open at Broadway’s newly refurbished Palace Theater this fall with Katie Brayben and Andrew Rannells reprising their acclaimed London performances, producers announced today.
The musical will begin previews at the Palace on October 19, with an official opening on November 14.
Producers Rocket Stage, Greene Light Stage, and James L. Nederlander announced the move to Broadway last November, but specific dates and initial casting were revealed today. Additional casting will be announced in the coming months.
Brayben will recreate her Olivier Award-winning performance as Tammy Faye Bakker, and Rannells will reprise his Olivier-nominated performance as Jim Bakker. Both starred in the world premiere West End Olivier-nominated production that opened at London’s Almeida Theatre in 2022.
Tammy Faye features music by John, lyrics by Scissor Sisters’ Shears, and book by Ink playwright James Graham.

Robert Zemeckis' 1994 Oscar darling "Forrest Gump" is a preachy, mawkish glob of syrupy sputum hocked from the throat of conservative America right into the face of the more daring, queer, artistically ambitious indie fare coming to the fore at the same time. It tells the story of a mentally disadvantaged man (Tom Hanks) who leans unthinkingly into every traditional trope of regressive Americana and meets nothing but success and fame. Forrest Gump is good at running and becomes a high school football star. He serves in the army and becomes a hero. He is very good at table tennis and becomes an Olympic champion. He tries his hand at small business -- shrimping -- and succeeds. He has an Iq of 75 and becomes a billionaire by following the rules.
Meanwhile, the characters who express any sort of malcontentedness with The System are punished. Notably, Jenny (Robin Wright), Forrest's childhood love,...

Dig deep enough through the eBay auction site, and you can still find Beanie Babies listed for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Nobody’s buying them at that price, but it’s a reminder that there was a moment in the not-so-distant past when the cheaply made stuffed animals fetched outrageous sums. The phenomenon, while it lasted, was fueled largely by the illusion of scarcity, as collectors chased what they believed to be limited numbers of the highly coveted critters.
Were they really so rare? “The Beanie Bubble” doesn’t have any particularly interesting insights into the craze, focusing instead on their inventor, disgraced self-made toy mogul Ty Warner, portrayed by Zach Galifianakis in one of the discomfort comedian’s most skin-crawling performances to date. Tonally, the movie walks a tricky line between easy-target satire and female-empowering corporate case study, falling into the overcrowded junk-culture nostalgia-porn category so recently represented by “Tetris,...

There’s this theory out there that annoys most Trekkies, being that, of the films, only the even-numbered entries are good. This stems mainly from the fact that everyone remembers Star Trek V: The Final Frontier as being the worst movie of the series and ignores that Star Trek: The Motion Picture – while divisive – was a hit, and so was The Search for Spock. However, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is indeed a bad Star Trek movie, and in this episode of Revisited, we’re going to look at exactly what went wrong with something that was clearly a passion project for its star and director, William Shatner.
Jump back to 1986, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home was a significant hit. It was the highest-grossing movie in the franchise and earned critical raves. People that didn’t even like Star Trek were down with this earth-bound adventure of the crew of the U.

For many, Videodrome (1983) remains David Cronenberg’s signature film. It is not his most successful or necessarily even his best, but it does most thoroughly define the descriptor “Cronenbergian.” It is a distillation of many of the themes and motifs he would explore throughout his filmography. Along with The Fly (1986), it is perhaps his greatest depiction of the subgenre that he is most often associated with—body horror, but it also explores a number of philosophical ideas that thread their way through much of his body of work. Above all, Videodrome is an often uncomfortable interrogation of humanity’s relationship with violence, entertainment, and media, and forty years after its release, that interrogation has only become more disturbing and prescient.
Videodrome is an idea movie wrapped up in a mystery/conspiracy plot. That the plot makes any sense at all is rather remarkable considering, due to Canadian tax shelter policies,...

Is it Oscar time for James Gray? The director’s new film, “Armageddon Time,” is one of the few competition titles debuting at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, so it is also one of the few likely candidates that may have an impact on the Oscar race.
While Gray’s previous work like “The Immigrant,” “The Lost City of Z,” and “Ad Astra” tends to do better with critics than audiences, this new one may end up pleasing both groups. “Armageddon Time” is a memoir-ish drama, set in Queens, New York during the 1980s, seen through the eyes of a sixth-grader named Paul, played by Banks Repeta. His parents are Emmy-winner Jeremy Strong and Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway, and his grandparents are two-time Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins and four-time Tony-nominee Tovah Feldshuh. Weirdly enough, Donald Trump’s father, Fred Trump, figures in the story, and is played by John Diehl. Recent Oscar-winner Jessica Chastain...

The title “Under the Banner of Heaven” comes from John Taylor, third president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Lds). “God is greater than the United States, and when the Government conflicts with Heaven we will be ranged under the banner of Heaven against the Government.” Taylor was— like his predecessors Brigham Young and Joseph Smith, the church’s famous founder — a professed polygamist. “The United States says we cannot marry more than one wife; God says different.”
Plural marriage is only a small plot point in the FX true-crime limited series “Under the Banner of Heaven,” centering on the 1984 murder of a Mormon mother and her infant daughter. But it’s ultimately what gets Dan Lafferty (Wyatt Russell) excommunicated, and that is a very big deal in Lds-land. “The Laffertys — they’re kind of like the Utah Kennedys,” explains Detective Pyre (played by Andrew Garfield). It’s only been about three weeks since the end of awards season, but, on Wednesday night, Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield was back on a red carpet in Hollywood for the premiere of his new series, “Under the Banner of Heaven.”
The FX project marks Garfield’s first miniseries, with the actor playing Detective Jeb Pyre, a Mormon man whose faith is shaken by an unthinkable crime. Based on the non-fiction book by Jon Krakauer, the show’s seven episodes follow the events that led to the 1984 murder of Brenda Wright Lafferty (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her baby daughter in a Salt Lake Valley, Utah suburb. Over the course of the series, Pyre uncovers buried truths about the origins of his religion, the Fundamentialist sects that branched off from it and the potentially violent consequences of unyielding faith amid the real-life events which transpired within the Lafferty family.

The 94th Academy Awards have blessed Jessica Chastain with her first career Oscar. The actress accepted the best lead actress prize for her work in The Eyes of Tammy Faye on Sunday. During her acceptance speech, Chastain touched on current social issues of discrimination, violence, bigotry and division.
“We’re faced with discriminatory and bigoted legislation that is sweeping our country with the only goal of further dividing us. There’s violence and hate crimes being perpetuated on innocent civilians all over the world,” she said. “In times like this, I think of Tammy and I’m inspired by her radical acts of love. I’m inspired by her compassion. I see it as a guiding principle that moves us forward.”

After a long-haul awards season that brought her back to the forefront of the race last-minute thanks to a Screen Actors Guild Award win, Jessica Chastain has won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” For this top acting prize, Chastain beat out Olivia Colman for “The Lost Daughter,” Penélope Cruz for “Parallel Mothers,” Nicole Kidman for “Being the Ricardos,” and Kristen Stewart for “Spencer.” This year’s Best Actress race was wide open, with any of the aforementioned women a possibility to take home the Oscar statuette. But Chastain secured key wins along the campaign trail for “Tammy Faye,” which opened all the way back in September after a Toronto International Film Festival premiere, and those precursor awards were key in bringing her across the finish line.

There is something perfect about Tammy Faye Bakker’s notorious cosmetic stylings leading to Oscar recognition. At the height of the late Christian televangelist’s 1980s fame, her dramatic mask of makeup — elephant-thick lashes, painterly eye shadow, very big hair — was lampooned across the media, from tabloids to late-night comedy shows. But the relentless jokes never seemed to faze Bakker. On the contrary, she loved her over-the-top-look and remained so committed to it that she made much of it permanent by tattooing her brows, eye-liner and lip-liner. She seemed so proud of her look that it’s easy to imagine her responding to the Oscar nominations of the people who recreated it in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” with a full-hearted “Hallelujah!”

Ever since Searchlight Pictures released stills of Jessica Chastain in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” audiences were captivated by her transformation, and now, the hair and makeup team, along with Chastain, are all in the running for Oscar. The goal of makeup department head Linda Dowds, hair department head Stephanie Ingram and special makeup effects artist Justin Raleigh was not to make a caricature of the famous televangelist but create a real person.
Raleigh’s process began with 2D conceptual designs combining the real Tammy Faye Bakker with Chastain to figure out the elements that had to be altered with prosthetics. “From those 2D designs, we then went into clay sculptures over Andrew [Garfield, who plays Jim Bakker] and Jessica’s life casts. From those sculptures, we molded and created several prosthetic variations to test in each of our three major prosthetic stages related to their weights gains and age requirements based on the scripted timeline.

Jessica Chastain now has four nominations under her belt at the Screen Actors Guild Award. She scored her most recent Best Actress nomination from her peers for portraying the titular televangelist in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” It’s been nine years since she was last here. All of her competition are previous nominees at SAG. Kidman has the most extensive experience at SAG as this is her 15th career nomination. Jessica Chastain has built a résumé of portraying strong-willed women, but playing Tammy Faye Bakker was the first time she felt “exposed.” Believe it or not, she’s been working on bringing The Eyes of Tammy Faye to life since her most recent Best Actress nomination in 2012’s Zero Dark Thirty.
“It’s been 10 years since I haven’t acknowledged, and it was around that time I got the rights to Tammy Faye’s story, so it really feels like full circle,” she said after her Oscar nomination this morning.
Chastain told me that when she found out she was nominated, she had a bit of a celebration with the other Best Actress nominees. From the sounds of it on our call, she seemed genuinely in shock.
“I FaceTimed with Penelope Cruz, who I love, and we jumped up and down together,” Chastain said. “Then I called Olivia Colman and celebrated with her.

The last time Andrew Garfield was shortlisted for Leading Man was in 2016 for his role as true-life pacifist hero Desmond Doss in Mel Gibson’s war drama Hacksaw Ridge. His performance in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s tick, tick… Boom! could not be more different. In this stylized, unconventional biopic, he stars as Jonathan Larson, a playwright working in musical theater who died in January 1996 on the morning of the biggest day of his life—the first preview of his Broadway hit Rent. Many expected tick, tick… Boom! to tell the story of that artistic and commercial triumph, but no—it tells instead of the myriad failures that Larson experienced, with dogged determination, in the run-up.
Larson is one of three very American roles that the LA-born but British-raised Garfield played this year, alongside The Eyes Of Tammy Faye’s Jim Bakker and Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Spider-Man, a surprise cameo...

The fake and the genuine rub shoulders in a fascinating way in the prolific Michael Showalter's biopic of televangelists Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker, a long-time passion project for star Jessica Chastain and based on the cult documentary of the same name. In fact the real and the performed run so close together that, by the end of the film, it's not entirely clear if even Tammy knows where one ends and the other starts.
Showalter's film, scripted by Abe Sylvia, follows Tammy and Jim from their first meeting at bible college, where there's already a larger than life quality to Jim that the wide-eyed and, the film suggests, "true believer" naif Tammy (Chastain) finds irresistible. Shot in a deliberately kitsch fashion - which put me in mind of the over-the-top vibe of Steven Soderbergh's Liberace biopic Behind The Candelabra -...

The actor is hilarious in a very enjoyable look at the rise and fall of the televangelist’s life with slippery husband Jim Bakker
Towards the end of her life, Christian broadcaster and recording star Tammy Faye Bakker, wife of disgraced televangelist and fraudster Jim Bakker, achieved a kind of camp redemption in an archly celebratory documentary released in 2000 called The Eyes of Tammy Faye, narrated by RuPaul. She was praised for her courage in supporting the LGBT community and people with Aids in the 80s, defying the homophobia of the Christian right in Ronald Reagan’s America. The film suggested a kind of martyrdom for Tammy Faye, drawn into her husband’s mess. The title was about her permanent eyeliner and liquid mascara but with a cheeky hint that like Laura Mars in the famous horror movie, she saw things that involved her – sure – but for which she couldn’t be held responsible.

The brotherhood and camaraderie that Spider-Men past and present Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield exuded on the big screen in the smash hit “Spider-Man: No Way Home” seems to have extended to the trio’s relationship offscreen, too.
As Garfield recently told Variety, he improvised a heartfelt, fan-favorite moment in the new film. “There’s a line I improvised in the movie, looking at [Maguire and Holland] and I tell them I love them. That was just me loving them,” he said. But long after filming ended, Garfield and Maguire even checked their film out in a theater on opening night together, according to a new interview with Et.
“I still can’t believe it happened,” Garfield said. “I snuck into a theater on opening night and just watched with my baseball cap on and my mask. In fact, I was also with Tobey, me and Tobey snuck into a theater...

Producer Dave Cobb on Helping Jessica Chastain Nail the Voice as Well as ‘Eyes’ of Tammy Faye Bakker
High-profile music producer Dave Cobb is currently up for several Grammys for his working with two longtime clients who have a couple of the biggest and best voices in the business: Brandi Carlile and Chris Stapleton. For a recent film project, he was tasked with replicating the vintage ’70s/’80s song catalog of another belter, albeit a somewhat less celebrated one: the late televangelist-diva Tammy Faye Bakker.
As might be expected, after having worked on “Eyes of Tammy Faye” — the film that debuted in theaters in November and just made its bow to a wider audience on HBO Max — Cobb has nothing but the highest praise for Jessica Chastain, who thoroughly inhabited Bakker as a vocal stylist for more than a half-dozen musical performances. But you won’t find him offering Bakker herself much less effusive praise than he would a Carlile or Stapleton. And the potential for campiness didn...

“I wanted to acknowledge her for the incredible things she did,” says Jessica Chastain while discussing her critically acclaimed portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker in Searchlight Pictures’ “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” “It’s unlike anything I’ve ever done. In some sense it’s easier doing full nudity. There was something so exposing about this.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“The Eyes of Tammy Faye” chronicles the rise, fall and redemption of the controversial televangelist as well as her rocky marriage to Jim Bakker (Andrew Garfield). The film directed by Michael Showalter has earned Chastain a Critics Choice Film Awards nomination for Best Actress. The Oscar-nominated star of “The Help” (2011) and “Zero Dark Thirty” (2012) is also this year’s recipient of the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Throughout his career, Andrew Garfield has earned acclaim for his acting on screen in films like “The Social Network” and “Hacksaw Ridge,” won a Tony Award for his striking portrayal of Prior Walter in “Angels in America” on Broadway and even swung between buildings as a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. But it’s arguable that 2021 was his biggest year yet.
In September, Garfield played Jim Bakker opposite Jessica Chastain’s Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and received positive reviews for his supporting performance. November brought Garfield his most beloved part yet, that of Jonathan Larson in “tick, tick… Boom!” The Netflix musical, directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, put Garfield in the center of the 2022 Best Actor conversation. Finally, in December, Garfield returned to the superhero genre, once again playing Peter Parker in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” a multiverse-bending blockbuster that has broken box office records. For Variety‘s Writers on Writers, John Wirth pens a tribute to “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (screenplay by Abe Sylvia; based on the documentary by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato).
Abe Sylvia has written a script about two hapless bible students who create with nothing more than a hymn, a bible and a puppet their wildly successful televangelist empire. It’s no small miracle that he’s accomplished this without commenting on the immoral hellscape the story stands upon. Not only has he succeeded in making Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker empathetic and lively screen characters, he’s written a star turn for Jessica Chastain, who so zealously embodies Tammy Faye she’s likely to win an Oscar.
Her brilliant performance is very nearly matched by the sniveling, self-eating one brought to the film by Andrew Garfield as the (ultimately) defrocked Jim Bakker. Cherry Jones appears as the stark and repressed Rachel,...

This is the life for Andrew Garfield because he has climbed into third place in the overall Best Actor Oscar odds for “Tick, Tick… Boom!“, breaking up a months-long stranglehold by the trio of Will Smith (“King Richard”), Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”) and Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”).
Garfield displaced Washington, who drops down to fourth, with Garfield’s fellow star of a musical, Peter Dinklage of “Cyrano,” rounding out the current predicted lineup in fifth place. Smith (17/5 odds) and Cumberbatch (4/1) are still comfortably ahead of Garfield (11/2), but at the rate he’s rising, he could close the gap soon. Two Experts and one editor are picking him to win.

“I was a teenager when the whole Bakker scandal broke,” says Michael Showalter, the director of “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” which chronicles the life of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker and her turbulent marriage to Jim Bakker. “So I have strong memories of seeing Tammy on the cover of tabloids. The country at that time was sort of caught up with her makeup, the way she sounded and the way she looked. There was a collective enjoyment, it seemed like, in watching their downfall.” Watch the exclusive video interview with Showalter above.

“I felt so akin to him even though I’m not a writer myself. “Tick, Tick … Boom” opened in theaters on November 12 before streaming on Netflix the following week on November 19. Along the way, its leading man Andrew Garfield has exploded in the Oscar predictions of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed. He now ranks third in their forecasts, behind only Will Smith (“King Richard“) and Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog“).
The film is based on the autobiographical stage musical by late Broadway composer Jonathan Larson. Garfield plays Larson as he struggled to balance his artistic ambitions with his personal relationships and the harsh realities of being a starving artist in New York City. As recently as November 9, Garfield was ranked eighth by the Experts. By November 15 he cracked the top five. And on November 30 he moved past Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth“) to take third place. (See the graph of his progress below.)

In a short period since blasting out of a cannon on the big screen in Terence Malick’s Oscar nominated and Palme d’Or-winning The Tree of Life in 2011, Jessica Chastain has quickly built a resume of playing strong willed women. Alas, some are Greek tragic heroes, who reach for the stars, only to fall short; Tammy Faye Bakker being one of them. She, along with her husband Jim Bakker, built Ptl into a massive multi-million dollar earning evangelical television network, a solid amount he siphoned for personal use, ultimately serving close to five years in jail. Tammy Faye Bakker meant a lot of things to a lot of people: a soulful Christian singer, a sensitive preacher who reached across the aisle to recognize the plight of LGBT during the AIDS epidemic, as well as material for late-night talk show hosts in her ambitious fashion and make-up sense. Chastain yearned...

Exclusive: Lionsgate bought a whopper of a spec package in Wayland. In competition, Lionsgate took the spec script by Simon Kinberg off the table with a progress to production commitment to make the movie. Jessica Chastain will produce, and her The Eyes of Tammy Faye helmer Michael Showalter will direct. Production is eyed for next year.
Wayland is an ensemble drama thriller that has shades of A Simple Plan and Knives Out. Kinberg will produce with Audrey Chon (who runs his Genre Films shingle), and Chastain and Kelly Carmichael (who runs her Freckle Films shingle). Showalter will be executive producer. Chastain would certainly be welcomed to be among the ensemble cast if she wants, but right now her commitment is as producer.
This is only the second spec Kinberg wrote in the last 20 years since he broke on the scene with his spec Mr. & Mrs. Smith and then got busy writing and producing blockbusters.

In order to avoid splitting votes and allow for the possibility of netting two acting nominations this year, Searchlight Pictures will campaign Andrew Garfield’s performance as televangelist Jim Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” for supporting actor consideration, based on an invite that was sent to BAFTA voters for an upcoming virtual screening of the film.
Following the biopic’s bow at the Toronto International Film Festival and modest box office receipts, its Oscar prospects have been seemingly on the fringe, but the film, directed by Michael Showalter, could make a roaring comeback during the season.
