In a heartfelt tribute to the late Akira Toriyama, Canadian actor Justin Chatwin, known for his role as Goku in Dragonball Evolution, the 2009 Hollywood adaptation of Dragonball manga, apologized for messing up the film.
“Rest in peace, brother. And sorry we messed up that adaptation so badly,” Chatwin wrote in his tribute to Toriyama which was shared on his Instagram story.
Chatwin’s message reflects the widespread disappointment among fans and creators alike over the botched adaptation of Toriyama’s Dragonball manga.
Dragonball Evolution, which was produced by 20th Century Fox, faced significant backlash for its departure from the source material, including poor writing, acting, production values, among others.
Notably, the film opted for a modern American high school setting over the fantasy/sci-fi elements integral to the original narrative, leading to accusations of whitewashing and cultural insensitivity.

The late Manga creator Akira Toriyama was unhappy with Hollywood after the industry ruined the loosely based live-action adaptation of his most famous work, Dragon Ball. It was Toriyama’s work that made the anime genre popular in the West. Toriyama, like any other Dragon Ball fan, had criticized the 2009 film starring Justin Chatwin and Emmy Rossum, Dragon Ball: Evolution.

Toriyama passed away on March 1, 2024, due to acute subdural hematoma. In a statement released by Bird Studio, the studio that he founded, they expressed their gratitude to fans who supported his work for over 45 years. They also revealed that the creator was in the middle of several works at the time of his passing.

Exclusive: Kaley Cuoco, Tom Pelphrey, Briana Cuoco, Midori Francis, Rebecca Mozo and Justin Chatwin are set to star in the play Love Kills, a special event that will see all proceeds going towards IATSE members who have been impacted by the strikes.
Based on the one-act plays by Don Nigro, the event will run November 15-18 at the Colony Theater in Burbank.
Kevin Kittle is directing with Cara Christian producing. Justin Huen will be the technical director, with Dana Schwartz serving as stage manager.
The plays explore all the ways that “love can be deadly,” and they are shared like campfire ghost stories; full of suspense and atmosphere, infused with humor and a few winks at the audience. As with most of Nigro’s plays, they are a celebration of storytelling, and hopefully a reminder of the simple magic that can be created with a writer, a couple actors, a few stools,...

In this very special “Viewer Request” episode of Awfully Good Movies, we’re finally tackling what could well be the worst live-action anime adaptation that Hollywood’s ever made, with 2009’s Dragonball Evolution!
When 20th Century Fox bought up the rights to Akira Toriyama’s beloved manga that became an even more beloved anime TV series, with Stephen Chow of Kung Fu Hustle set to produce, Dbz fans were simultaneously skeptical and hopeful of what the Americanized results would be. But when the movie was rushed into production on the cusp of a writer’s strike, with a writer and director who didn’t know anime from Animorphs, and the reported $100 million budget reduced to $30 million, the final product made Dragon Ball fans and casual viewers both explode in rage much like Son Goku himself.

Irish Catholic police officer Bill Coughlin believes in the right thing enough to attempt to do it, when in 1974, he is assigned to protect Black children being bused to a high school in South Boston. We know of his public service bent because of what happens when he apprehends a shoplifter outside a Black-owned food market early in the well-meaning, if wrong-headed feature “The Walk,” starring Justin Chatwin as Coughlin. He cuts the guy a break, even though the mart’s owner isn’t nearly as sympathetic. The exchange between cop and thief isn’t all Kum Ba Yah, but it is intended to signal Coughlin’s decency. When it comes to walking the walk, Bill Coughlin may prove to be the real deal. As for “The Walk,” the film’s insights about racism come as familiar baby steps.

War Of The Worlds
War Of The Worlds, 9pm, Film4, Monday, March 21
Steven Spielberg's tense take on Hg Wells' much-adapted novel, unsurprisingly transports the action to America and does what he does best by embedding it within a domestic context and one of his favourite frameworks, a fractured family. Dock worker Ray (Tom Cruise) is the epitome of A Bad Dad and if it's not worrying enough that his ex has just dropped his sullen teenage son Robbie (Justin Chatwin) and 10-year-old daughter Rachel (Dakota Fanning) off to stay, there's also the small matter of a highly violent alien invasion to deal with. Spielberg takes us on the run with Ray and his kids as he tries to keep them alive in the face of overwhelming odds. While there's no mistaking the hand of Spielberg here - from his clever use of lighting special effects - a trick that works as well now as.

Mary (Alexandra Daddario) and Ben (Diego Boneta) are the star-crossed black sheep of two powerful families engaged in a centuries-long feud – and they’re about to reignite an affair after many years apart. Their forbidden love triggers the dominoes that will draw in Mukul (Wade Allain-Marcus), Ben’s best friend, who owes him a life debt; Terrence (Justin Chatwin), Mary’s would-be protector-turned-stalker; Wayne (Travis Fimmel), an Aussie hitman with an open mind and a code of ethics; and his free-spirited girlfriend, Barbie (Emmanuelle Chriqui)…
There’s a particular style of filmmaking that resonates with me – the use of film noir and pulpy detective movie tropes in modern films. I don’t know why but the dichotomy of those older tropes combined with modern storytelling, especially quirky comedy,...

From the 2010 edition of the Blacklist to Zac Efron’s schedule, Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari’s screenplay for Die in a Gunfight seemed to be getting the fast-track into theaters before seven years of development saw a revolving door of actors and directors changing. It would take almost a decade before cameras started rolling and the person sitting prettiest after the whole ordeal became Collin Schiffli. After two indie films written by frequent collaborator David Dastmalchian, he’s finally got his hands in the Hollywood pie with Lionsgate and a modestly star-studded cast of B-listers to help make his stylistic flourishes look good. And there are a lot of them. Whether or not they work to make this riff on “Romeo and Juliet” a success is beside the point.

Skipped this one because it’s by Spielberg? The 9/11- inflected take on H.G. Wells’ classic reproduces thrills from the book not captured in George Pal’s 1953 atom-age update. For this reviewer it was a big surprise — a Tom Cruise movie in which he plays an appropriately terrified character instead of his annoying big star persona. Nervous audiences loved this in 2005… it actually generates some good scares. Seen on a good Ultra-hd setup, those scares translate well to home video.

It’s funny to think about how things turn out since Justin Chatwin’s emergence into show business came off of a dare made by a friend to audition for a project when he was younger. From that point on his career started to build slowly but surely until he finally came to be a known actor and someone that people instantly recognize when he takes the screen. A lot of folks probably recognize him as Jimmy from Shameless, where he showed up for three seasons and came back for another couple of appearances. With Fiona out of the picture for now

The renewal comes three months after the series debuted on Netflix to largely negative reviews, with The Hollywood Reporter's ...

Despite the presence of Katee Sackhoff, Netflix's Another Life is a soggy, uninspired sci-fi mess.

This is a spoiler-free review based on the first two episodes of Another Life.
Katee Sackhoff of Battlestar Galactica fame is returning to space on July 25 in Netflix’s new sci-fi drama Another Life. The series follows her character Niko Breckinridge, an astronaut taking charge of a spaceship that travels at the speed of light with an established crew. She’s sent by the fictional United States Interstellar Command to search for answers after a mysterious structure manifested on Earth and started emitting indistinguishable signals to a distant planet. Galactica nostalgia may be enough to intrigue some sci-fi lovers’ but, if the first two episodes are any indication, the premise won’t do much to retain their attention.
The plot quickly becomes convoluted and disorderly, which would be fine if the...

Netflix’s new series “Another Life” brings Katee Sackhoff back into space, a decade after the conclusion of “Battlestar Galactica,” the beloved series on which she starred. But her new series looks more like the rest of the fare on the SyFy network — it’s inelegantly made and operates less in the realm of ideas than in pure scares. It’s not ineffective, but little in “Another Life” connects to do much more than the purely visceral.
Which is too bad, not least because the show starts from a point that suggests it has big things on its mind. The arrival (to borrow the title of the 2016 film the plot seems to ape a bit) of a UFO hovering above Earth prompts Sackhoff, an astronaut, to join a mission seeking its origin and its motives. She’s faced first with a mutinous blowhard among her crew and then by a...

Battlestar Galactica alum Katee Sackhoff is returning to space in Netflix's Another Life this July, and it doesn't look like it'll be a walk in the park.
The upcoming space drama stars Sackhoff as Commander Niko Breckinridge, who is tasked with leading humanity's first - and wildly dangerous - interstellar mission to a new planet. Meanwhile, her husband (Shameless star Justin Chatwin) attempts to make contact with a mysterious presence back on Earth. The series appears to weave in themes about the miracle of life and just how far we'll go to protect it, but judging from the first teaser, it also seems like it'll leave us with nightmares.
Considering the streaming giant has also freaked us the f*ck out with journeys to space and the future in I Am Mother and Lost in Space, we'll be watching this with the lights on. Check out the first teaser...
