For me, the most interesting thing about horror maestro Tobe Hooper’s storied career is he takes chances. He always swings big; from his landmark second feature The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), to Lifeforce (1985), to even The Mangler (1995), he pushes the genre into the absurd through concept and execution, audiences be damned. It’s an admirable trait in a filmmaker, and one that’s on full display with Eaten Alive (1976), probably his most bizarre film to date. (Which is saying a lot.)
After a limited stateside release in October of ’76, EA was given a wide release in May of ’77 by Virgo International Pictures to theatres and drive-ins across the land. The start of the ever undulating arc of Hooper’s career, it was met with a resounding “Whaaaat?” by the public and critics alike. This was not the follow up to the cultural explosion that was Chainsaw people were expecting. And to be honest,...

The 1920 silent film Within Our Gates screens as part of The St. Louis International Film Festival Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7:30pm at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium. The film will be accompanied by Stace England and the Screen Syndicate, who play an album of songs inspired by Oscar Micheaux, writer-director of Within Our Gates. The screening is sponsored by Renee Hirshfield. Ticket information can be found Here
As part of the 25th-anniversary celebration, The St. Louis International Film Festival reprises a special event from our 2009 edition by screening “Within Our Gates,” writer-director Oscar Micheaux’s impassioned response to D.W. Griffith’s “Birth of a Nation.” The film shines a revealing light on the racism of U.S. society, provocatively including scenes of lynching and attempted rape. Micheaux was a pioneering African-American filmmaker and novelist whose career stretched from the silent era through the 1940s. “Within Our Gates,” one of the oldest surviving “race” films,...

Following the unprecedented success of his monolithic sophomore feature, 1974’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which would forever immortalize director Tobe Hooper in the annals of great horror filmmakers, he would return to the Southern Fried grindhouse realm with 1976’s Eaten Alive, another ‘based-on-a-true-story’ effort featuring a set of original backwoods kooks. Though the film failed to attain the same attention, Hooper managed to obtain a higher profile cast for a film arguably less off-putting thanks to its more comedic moments.
Opening with a line that would go on to be famously recycled by Quentin Tarantino, ornery redneck Buck (Robert England) assails Clara (Roberta Collins), a reluctant prostitute in a bad blonde wig. Kicked out of the brothel by the no-nonsense owner, Miss Hattie (Carolyn Jones), Clara stumbles through the swampy Louisiana bayou and comes upon a dilapidated motel run by Judd (Neville Brand). The lonely, repressed old coot gets overexcited...

At a motel, hotel, or inn, you expect to have a roof over your head, a bed to sleep on, and the peace of mind that you'll live to see the sun shine through your window come morning. But as horror fans know, that last expectation isn't always met in places like the Bates Motel of Psycho, the Motel Hello of Motel Hell, the Pinewood Motel of Vacancy, and the Starlight Hotel of Tobe Hooper's Eaten Alive. Screen Syndicate, a side project of Southern Illinois-based Americana band Stace England and the Salt Kings, explores the fascinating history of Roger Corman’s New World Pictures and the exploitation films made by the company in the 1970s. The life of actress Roberta Collins — a Hollywood story of sadly unfulfilled promise — is the vehicle used to navigate the period. Collins lit up the screen in films like The Big Doll House, Women In Cages and Death Race 2000. But Collins was unable to break out of the B-movie grind, playing minor roles in increasingly poor productions before finally exiting the business. She died in obscurity in 2008. Screen Syndicate combines original songs, film clips, trailers, and other material into a unique live-music experience that pays tribute to Collins. The band has performed at numerous film festivals in the U.S. and Europe — appearing twice at Sliff — with shows about pioneering African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux and Cairo,...

There's a prison picture for every mood and inclination, from trashy romps to hard-hitting exposés. Are you craving a little sleazy Wip (that's "women in prison," newbies) action? Feel the need to get your blood boiling with a fact-based story of justice denied? How about a lavish musical set behind bars? There's something on this list for everyone. 10. Caged Heat The quintessential "chicks in the slammer" movie, whose poster really did say it all, promising, "Women's Prison U.S.A. - Rape, Riot & Revenge!" Seventies exploitation starlets Erica Gavin, Roberta Collins, Cheryl Smith, and Desiree Cousteau play mad, bad, and underclad inmates (the only way to better this lineup would be to add Pam Grier), and cult icon Barbara Steele is the wicked warden who eventually gets what's coming to her.9. Escape 2000 This quintessential slice of shameless Oz-ploitation unfolds in a dystopian future where "social deviants" are shipped off...

It's not difficult to let yourself get carried away by full-bore dystopian satires like "Death Race 2000" (1975), for a landfill full of reasons. Two immediately pop into mind: on one hand, unsavory poppycock like Roger Corman and Paul Bartel's infamous film make plain the simple fact that science fiction, when it's done properly, isn't about thrills. It's about ideas and social speculation, and is therefore a far closer cousin to pure satire than it's ever been to horror films (the genre with which sci-fi is usually clumped).
You could argue it a dozen ways pro or con, but sorry, without the twisted birth imagery and post-industrial wage-slavery context and equation between commerce and rabid predation, "Alien" (for one example) would be just a horror film and also not worth remembering. With it, it's a scalpel taken to the thorax of our socioeconomic Manifest Destiny.
Examples are everywhere, and once you grow up,...
