Bruce Timm is known for creating some of the most iconic shows of the DC Animated Universe. He was the mastermind behind legendary shows such as Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League, and Batman Beyond. Timm was also instrumental in producing animated films with the DC comic book characters including Batman: Under the Red Hood and The Dark Knight Returns.
While developing the animated shows for DC and WB, Timm reportedly set a proper continuity for the Dcau and even went as far as setting Batman Beyond in the future to protect the established canon. However, the one thing he reportedly did not plan was incorporating villains from Batman and Superman into the Justice League.

Voice actors always have an important role to play in animated media franchises. Their job is to express the emotions that their characters are feeling only with their voices and it requires an incredible amount of skill and perfection to be able to do it consistently.

Debuted in May 1939, the “Dark Knight” soon took on a coveted status as the “Caped Crusader” of Detective Comics aka DC. Ever since the character has become a central member of the Justice League and appeared in several editions and adaptations with several big-list names helming the live-action version. However, of the many such actors, Kevin Conroy comes off as arguably one of the most cherished ones to play Batman across several performances.
Featuring a distinctive voice, the late American actor has appeared in more than a staggering fifteen movies, close to four hundred television episodes, and even reprised his role in about twenty-four video games. An icon in his arena, Conroy’s iterations of Batman have become synonymous with the gritty and strong tone of speech associated with the character, and here are five of his most memorable such outings.

What Kevin Conroy was for Batman, Tim Daly was for Superman, who voiced the character in the ’90s Superman: The Animated Series. While the show itself isn’t as fondly remembered as Batman: The Animated Series, whose success paved the way for the show on the first hand, Daly did hit it out of the park with his performance as Clark Kent.
However, the acclaimed voice artist didn’t connect with Superman from the get-go, as it wasn’t until his later years that saw him developed a keen understanding of the character. But following the current landscape of superheroes, the Wings Star expressed his desire to get back to playing the Clark again, stressing the entertainment industry has gravitated way towards darkness.

Batman will go down in history as one of the most iconic superheroes of all time. Over the years, we have seen many iterations of the Caped Crusader in multiple animated series, movies, and video games. However, most of these iterations revolve around Bruce Wayne’s version of Batman.

Batman Beyond was considered one of the most popular animated series back in the day. The series revolves around the story of Terry McGinnis, a teenage boy who is being trained by Bruce Wayne aka Batman himself to become his successor and watch over Gotham City. This is because The Caped Crusader has become too old himself.

In the world of superheroes and their adversaries, few characters stand as iconic as Superman and his arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor. However, Tim Daly, who voiced Kal-El in Bruce Timm’s Superman: The Animated Series has shared a special affinity for another DC supervillain, who is often described as an anti-hero and a dark reflection of the Kryptonian superhero, Bizarro.
Superman: The Animated Series
He has made recurring appearances in the DC Animated Universe and has been voiced by numerous actors over the years. Daly also gave his voice to the character in The Animated Series, which offered him an insight into the character. The 67-year-old actor expressed empathy towards the villain, as he fondly recalled his time portraying the complex character.

Introduced in Superboy #68, Bizarro has been frequently seen as an antagonist clashing with Superman and has taken on the role of an anti-hero as well.

Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel was the first step in Zack Snyder’s vision for the Dcu. The director brought it a unique and tonally dark film exploring Clark Kent’s evolution into becoming more human and his past catching up to haunt him. The dark and somber tone of the film left fans divided although Cavill’s impressive performance as Superman was praised.

Coming off the success of The Dark Knight trilogy, WB wanted to take a similar route for Superman, leading them to bring Zack Snyder on board for 2013’s Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill. But considering, unlike Batman, Superman is a bright and optimistic character, making him dark and brooding didn’t land well among fans, and with Bvs, these issues only aggravated.

Batman has many iconic lines. From his talk about being the personification of vengeance, or the metaphors about darkness and the night, his dialogues follow a similar tone. On top of the lines that have become popular in the comics, it would seem that every person who played the character added something of their own to his Hall of Fame.
Oftentimes, these additions end up being iconic lines that stick around long after they hang the cape.

The perfect example of this would be Ben Affleck’s portrayal in the SnyderVerse. During his time in the franchise, he created a line that has been deemed one of the greatest in the history of the character.

There are a lot of ways actors look at portraying superheroes when they have a secret identity. Most Spider-Man actors tend to use the same voice as Peter Parker and his alter ego. However, a different president was set for Batman by none other than Kevin Conroy, who has voiced the characters more times than one.

When it comes to the Batman comics, each follows a story sacred to its own, many manage to stand out, but only some are Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke. It is the story that is regarded as one of the darkest in Batman’s many variations. The violence is off the charts, the tones set much darker, and everything else in Gotham is stuck between a rock and a hard place.
The Killing Joke
Despite being regarded as a storytelling masterpiece, there is a lot about the comic book arc that Moore hates. Ironically, it was his own mindscape that came to life through this project. There are many artists who come to hate their art after a while. Some could hate it in the process of making it, while some might simply dislike it.

In Ben Affleck’s Batman, there were some things that the age-old voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, found very disturbing. No doubt the real fans of Batman’s idealism were seriously disappointed with the Dark Knight crossing his boundaries just because of the script. More than being a superhero, Batman is a name that’s almost a synonym for justice.

Fans of Batman: The Animated Series (Btas) can expertly recall the show’s gritty, dark tone that distinguished it from other superhero animated series. Bruce Timm, the lead artist and co-creator of the show, is largely responsible for that due to his genius.
