- Jim Beaver, biographer of George Reeves, star of Adventures of Superman (1952), which was produced by Ellsworth, was himself an actor on the television series Deadwood (2004). He played a character named Ellsworth, and when it became necessary for that character to have a first name, he received permission from producer David Milch for the character to be named Whitney Ellsworth, in honor of the "Superman" producer.
- He was the editorial director of DC Comics, the company that owned the rights to Superman.
- Ellsworth's wife Jane Dewey founded the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation in 1952. Her daughter from a previous marriage suffered from the disease. The Jane Dewey Ellsworth Humanitarian Award is given in Ellsworth's wife's honor annually.
