Pearl Jam appeared The Howard Stern Show this week, where they not only shared fascinating stories — like how drummer Matt Cameron once got a cease-and-desist letter from Kiss — but also performed a number of songs, including tracks from their new album Dark Matter and older hits like “Daughter” and “Yellow Ledbetter.”
The appearance was in support of the band’s 12th LP, Dark Matter, which debuted last week on April 19th and has earned praise from many, including Stem himself, who called it “a phenomenal fucking album.” When asked to perform a track from the record, Pearl Jam chose the opener, “Scared of Fear,” delivering the song’s heavy feel with uproarious energy.

Prior to carving out his own legendary career as drummer of both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, a teenage Matt Cameron played in a Kiss cover band. Unfortunately, paying musical tribute to his rock heroes led to a cease-and-desist letter from the iconic band itself.
Cameron and the rest of Pearl Jam were recent guests on The Howard Stern Show, promoting their new album, Dark Matter. During the visit, the drummer shared his Kiss story, which also involved meeting Paul Stanley.

“I was in a neighborhood Kiss cover band when I was 13/14, something like that,” began Cameron. “We played local high schools, keggers, what not. And my dad was friends with the head of the stagehand union in San Diego, so when Kiss was playing there … during the ‘Alive’ tour, that was ’75, we got to go see Kiss do a soundcheck at the San Diego Sports Arena.

Experience the new Pearl Jam album in a unique cinematic way. The rock band has revealed a short promo trailer for Pearl Jam: Dark Matter, a one-night-only cinematic event this April. Viewers will be among the very first to hear the band's new record (called "Dark Matter") in cinemas around the world. This communal experience will play Dark Matter in its entirety twice: first in a dark cinema, then again with mesmerizing visuals. Artist Alexandr Gnezdilov created the cover of Dark Matter using a large self-made kaleidoscope with each letter visible on the cover individually captured, then handwritten midair with a specially designed flashlight to create the pearlescent effect. This is the same art seen in the visualization within this trailer. Produced by multi-Grammy award winning producer Andrew Watt,...

UK power trio Tigercub are premiering a new Stone Gossard remix of their song “Show Me My Maker” exclusively via Consequence (listen below).
The original song appeared on Tigercub’s 2023 album, The Perfume of Decay, but has been given a sonic boost by the Pearl Jam guitarist, who co-produced the remix with Josh Evans. The band is signed to Gossard’s Loosegroove Records.
“I feel lucky as shit that Tigercub allowed me the chance to remix this track,” stated Gossard. “How many different ways is this song cool? The lyric, the groove, the heavy ass bass…it screams! Pearl Jam‘s Eddie Vedder gifted a heartwarming holiday surprise to a few young musicians in Kailua, Oahu.
According to a recent Facebook post from Coconut Grove Music teacher Harry Koizumi, Vedder stopped into the store seeking a long-term teacher’s expertise — to which Koizumi happily obliged. “He asked if I could help him choose some electric guitars that would be good for younger players,” Koizumi wrote. “He then purchased 3 guitars and asked if I had 3 younger students that might need them and to help them be inspired!”
Koizumi called the three mothers of the students he’d selected to receive the guitars, and was pleasantly surprised to hear that all three of the mothers were already fans of Vedder. He asked them to play Vedder’s music around the house to prime the students for the surprise.
After receiving the surprise guitars, Koizumi asked his students to write thank-you notes to Vedder.

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament has offered his own update on the next Pearl Jam album. During an appearance on Kyle Meredith With…, Ament said that while the band feels they’ve “earned the right to do whatever the fuck we want,” their latest effort isn’t quite done and “doesn’t feel like a record yet.”
The comments come just two weeks after Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard shared with Meredith that he felt the new album was “close to the finish line,” an assessment with which Ament gently disagrees. “The hardest part of [finishing] a record a lot of times is figuring out which songs go on the record and do we need to record another song and what’s the artwork and what’s the title and all that stuff,” Ament says, noting the band is planning on taking the rest of summer off with those questions left unanswered.

The socially distanced performance not only found each member of Pearl Jam recording from home, but there was a little bit of lineup movement as well, with guitarist Stone Gossard playing bass on the track and bassist Jeff Ament playing guitar and keyboards. Drummer Matt Cameron and guitarist Mike McCready held down their usual posts, as did Eddie Vedder, who also busted out the lights, the...

Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard explained how the group’s upcoming album, Gigaton, captures “the spirit of the band” in a new interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 radio.
The first single from Gigaton, “Dance of the Clairvoyants,” found the band exploring funkier and more experimental sonic territories, with Gossard saying the track exemplifies “the outer edge of something that we haven’t tried before, a new way of configuring our sort of collaborative talents.” But he went on to note that “Dance of the Clairvoyants” is just one of several flavors on the record.

Long ago, during a brief “ecstasy phase,” Eddie Vedder tried to write some techno music. “I was listening to all this stuff on ecstasy,” he told me in 2006, during an all-night chat in a Cleveland hotel room. “But I was wondering, ‘Are they writing it on ecstasy?’ I decided that the pure way to do it is to actually take ecstasy, and then write ecstasy music. That didn’t work out. But I enjoyed the ecstasy.” Around the same time, guitarist Stone Gossard revealed a desire to experiment with Pearl...

They wanted to call it “Life,” and by the time Pearl Jam began recording their third album, their lives seemed pretty charmed. Despite ignoring nearly every dictate of the music business, they had sold millions of copies of Ten and Vs. Creatively, Pearl Jam were on such fire that they began cutting their follow-up to Vs. while they were still on the road to promote it. “It’s kind of amazing when you look back,” bassist Jeff Ament told Cameron Crowe later, “but we really didn’t have more than...

Three grunge luminaries who were once members of the band Green River — Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament and Mudhoney’s Mark Arm — break down the origins of the genre in the latest episode of our podcast, Rolling Stone Music Now. Senior Writer Kory Grow joins host Brian Hiatt to discuss the band’s importance and play portions of his interviews, which were previously published as part of an in-depth oral history of Green River and Seattle’s nascent rock community in the mid Eighties.

Brad Pitt and Peter Berg’s Film 45 will document the late Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman.
"Cry, if you want to cry," Chris Cornell sang on the song "My Wave." Brad Pitt and Peter Berg’s production company Film 45 will help you see and clear your eyes in a documentary about the late frontman and songwriter for Soundgarden, Audioslave and Temple of the Dog, according to Variety. Cornell’s widow, Vicky Cornell, will participate as a producer. Paramount recently yanked Pitt's World War Z 2, which he hoped to make with Fight Club director David Fincher, from its production schedule. Berg will direct the as-yet-untitled movie. No other details of the Chris Cornell documentary have been announced.
Cornell died on May 18, 2017, a few hours after a Soundgarden show at Detroit's Fox Theater. His death was ruled a suicide. An autopsy revealed painkillers and anti-anxiety medication in Cornell's bloodstream.

A new documentary film centered on the life of Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell is in the works, Variety has learned.
The film will be produced by Cornell’s widow, Vicky, along with Brad Pitt and Peter Berg’s Film 45 production company, which focuses on non-scripted entertainment and branded content. Berg will direct.
Cornell was the lead singer of Soundgarden from the band’s incarnation in 1984 until they broke up in 1997. He went on to front Audioslave with members of Rage Against the Machine before Soundgarden reunited in 2011. The band was in the middle of touring when, on May 18, 2017, Cornell died after a show in Detroit. His death was ruled a suicide.
In January, Vicky Cornell and a number of the grunge icon’s fellow musicians, including Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, threw a benefit concert, “I Am the Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell” at the Forum in Los Angeles.

When Green River hit their groove, they played a vicious mix of snarling punk and gigantic hard-rock riffs. It was a heavy, menacing sound, and in the mid-Eighties, nobody really knew what to call it. “I think we just considered ourselves rock & roll guys who grew up on punk rock,” drummer Alex Shumway says now. “We realized that there was some music that we liked before we became hardcore kids that we were afraid we listened to, but then we admitted we liked it. And we started making music like that.

It’s been six years since Pearl Jam released Lightning Bolt, and they’re feeling the need to write new music again. It’s just been slow going. “It’d be fun to record or even just write a song together,” bassist Jeff Ament says. “I think when Chris [Cornell] passed, that’s really been a tough one to wrap our heads around, and then there’s just life stuff.”

There were many incredible moments at last night’s I Am The Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell tribute show at the Forum in Los Angeles, but the one that seemed to really shock the audience the most was Miley Cyrus’ stunning take on the Temple of the Dog classic “Say Hello 2 Heaven.”

ClimeCo is pleased to announce that Pearl Jam will voluntarily mitigate an estimated 3,500 tons of carbon dioxide produced by their 2018 European and Us tour dates through an Alaska-based forest preservation project.
“We are so thankful for the example Pearl Jam sets when it comes to offsetting the greenhouse gas emissions that result from their concert tours,” said Dan Linsky, VP Voluntary Markets at ClimeCo. “As a longtime fan of their music, I am thrilled to be working with them to support the Afognak Forest Project.”
This Alaska-based offset project is the first of its kind in the region and supports conservation work on Afognak Island which is home to a coastal temperate rainforest with old-growth trees that are between 180 and 250 years old, plus a regrowth of new trees from the past 30 years. Together, these new and old forests create the potential for absorbing millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Pearl Jam were cresting when they made an appearance on the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards. Not only did they win Video of the Year for “Jeremy,” trouncing video warhorses like Aerosmith, Peter Gabriel and R.E.M., but they also performed on the show, giving the network footage to air when the band moved away from making music videos. The peak of the evening was when Neil Young joined them onstage for a lively rendition of his 1989 hit “Rockin’ in the Free World.” Young just sauntered onstage in jeans, T-shirt...

Most major rock acts go on tour and play the same exact set every night, sometimes even repeating their stage banter verbatim like they’re reading from a script. Pearl Jam have always taken a different path. Their setlist is like the complete Pearl Jam catalog on shuffle where any song can surface at any point. Back in the 1990s, it caused their hardcore fans to feverishly trade bootlegs on cassette tapes and burned CDs, but in 2000 the group began selling pristine recordings of every show. Five years ago, Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament and his future wife Pandora visited the grave of Ament’s former bandmate Andrew Wood. Wood was the lead singer of grunge pioneers Mother Love Bone; his overdose in 1990 at the age of 24 forced Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard to regroup and build the band that would become Pearl Jam. Ament never forgot the frontman’s larger-than-life personality and the role he had in shaping Seattle rock.
But Wood’s grave was disappointing. “I was just like, ‘God, this should be so much more rad,...

If there’s one single event in the music industry year besides the Grammys that draws more top-flight executives than any other, it’s the United Jewish Appeal’s luncheon, which raises money for the organization and honors a different executive or executives with its Music Visionary of the Year accolade. This year, the honorees were Spotify’s Daniel Ek and Troy Carter — and, true to form, the spotlight-averse Ek stayed home in Stockholm while Carter held it down.
While this year’s event raised some $1.2 million for the organization, it was a bit more low-key than years past, particularly 2017, when Universal Evp Michele Anthony was toasted by Gloria Steinem and Sharon Osbourne and serenaded by Alessia Cara and Eddie Vedder and Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam.
But Carter had some high-profile friends in the building: Musical entertainment was provided by R&B singer H.E.R. and Grammy-nominee Leon Bridges, and NBA legend Julius “Dr.

By the time Cameron Crowe made Singles in 1992, the 35-year-old director was already a decade into his career's second act. A former journalist for Rolling Stone, he'd pivoted towards the movies after adapting his book about going undercover at a Los Angeles high school – Fast Times at Ridgemont High – for the screen in 1982. And his directorial debut, Say Anything... (1989), proved that he had a knack for capturing teen spirit.
Crowe, however, wanted his audience to grow up with him, so for his follow-up movie, he turned his attention to twentysomethings.

Last night Pearl Jam was officially inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The ceremony took place at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn. It’s hard to believe that it’s been a quarter of a century since they released Ten (which went Platinum 13 times) but here they are a little older, a little wiser, and still and unbelievable band. Following a speech by retired talk-show host David Letterman, the band consisting of Eddie Vedder, Mike McCready, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament and Matt Cameron all appeared onstage to make speeches marking the achievement, as did founding drummer Dave Krusen.

The late rapper Tupac Shakur and Seattle-based rockers Pearl Jam lead a class of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees that also include folkie Joan Baez and 1970s favorites Journey, Yes and Electric Light Orchestra.
The rock hall also said Tuesday it would give a special award to Nile Rodgers, whose disco-era band Chic failed again to make the cut after its 11th time nominated.
Baez will be inducted only months after her 1960s paramour, Bob Dylan, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
The Hall's 32nd annual induction ceremony will take place on April 7 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. HBO will show highlights later, with SiriusXM doing a radio broadcast.

You couldn't make "Say Anything" today. Lloyd Dobler would be standing outside Diane Court's house holding up his iPhone... nah, it just wouldn't work.
"Say Anything," which opened 25 years ago this week (on April 14, 1989), was definitely a movie of its time. In addition to that iconic moment where Lloyd uses his boombox to serenade Diane with Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes," it's the movie that made John Cusack into Generation X's favorite romantic leading man, as well as launching Cameron Crowe's directing career. And its countless cameos fill the film with faces that were familiar to audiences a quarter-century ago (blink and you'll miss Chynna Phillips, of Wilson Phillips fame, as Joe's new girlfriend) -- or those that were about to be, like future Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard (he plays a cab driver), Dan Castellaneta (on the eve of fame as the voice of Homer Simpson, he...

On “Lightning Bolt,” Pearl Jam’s 10th studio album, the Seattle group isn’t content to rest on its laurels. The 12 songs here — all anchored by Eddie Vedder’s often stirring, always impassioned vocal delivery, Mike McCready and Stone Gossard’s fine, sharp guitar playing, and drummer Matt Cameron and bassist Jeff Ament’s sturdy rhythm section —are well delivered, with taut, strong musicianship. By now, after more than 20 years, it’s not a surprise that the band finds itself so easily in the pocket on the Brendan O’Brien-produced set. Even though the band stretches out of its usual heavy, mid-tempo, groove here a...
