Paul McCartney wrote classic rock songs for numerous artists besides The Beatles. For example, he penned Badfinger’s “Come and Get It.” Subsequently, Paul revealed what he thought of the song and the band.
Paul McCartney left Linda McCartney in bed to write Badfinger’s ‘Come and Get It’
In the 1997 book Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now, Paul discussed how “Come and Get It” came together. “I wrote this very late one-night at Cavendish Avenue, leaving Linda in bed and saying, I’ve got an idea for a song,” he recalled.
Paul had a positive reaction to the song immediately. “I went downstairs and just whispered it into my tape recorder,” he said. “I played it very quietly so as not to wake her.” Paul described the tune as “a very catchy song.” Notably, The Beatles recorded a demo of “Come and Get It” that appears on some copies of the album Abbey Road.

You’re never alone with an alien symbiote. Just ask Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), whose body-roomie Venom is almost helpful in the kitchen in the new Venom: Let There Be Carnage trailer. But his counterpart Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson) only sees red, and is on a mission to wreak carnage. Meanwhile, he writer of the song in the Venom 2 trailer only wanted to bring some bittersweet pandemonium.
Harry Nilsson’s song “One” appeared on his 1968 album Aerial Ballet. The album title was a tribute to his grandparents, who were highwire circus act performers. It was the follow-up to his Pandemonium Shadow Show album, which got everybody talkin’ about the singer-songwriter from Brooklyn. When John Lennon and Paul McCartney were asked to name their favorite American group during their highly-covered 1968 press conference to announce the formation of The Beatles’ Apple Corps, each of the songwriting duo independently answered “Nilsson.”

When Paul McCartney shocked the world in April 1970 with his announcement of the Beatles' break-up, drummer Ringo Starr added a surprise of his own by becoming (initially, at least) the most musically active member of the former Fab Four.
As he would later recount in the lyrics of "Early 1970," the deceptively jaunty b-side of his 1971 hit "It Don't Come Easy," Starr was the only Beatle who didn't have any serious beef with any other member of the band at the time. Feeling lost without the family dynamic of the musical...

Though they wrote immortal songs like "Without You" and "Come and Get It," Badfinger's strongest legacy may be as a cautionary tale. The band, who were feted by the Beatles early on, had a promising early career, but after several hits in the early '70s, their career was derailed in the middle of that decade by several business blunders by their manager, Stan Polley. In 1975, founding member Pete Ham, despondent over the state of their career, hanged himself. Guitarist and songwriter Tom Evans never got over his friend's death, and in 1983, also hanged himself. It's a glum legacy...

It’s easy to make fun of The X Factor, what with Demi Lovato’s crocodile tears (and atrocious, “more prouder” grammar), Simon Cowell’s bloated sense of self-importance and especially future Emmy nominee for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Paulina Rubio’s patented brand of “does this chica have a concussion?” English. (Tonight’s “oily nose”/”you are you!” critique of Carlito Olivero was beautifully absurd, but still couldn’t top last week’s inability to tell her hot Latino contestant apart from wide-eyed 15-year-old Josh Levi.)

When Sopranos creator David Chase chose the valedictory song for his show’s 2007 finale, he made a high-lowbrow move, exhuming Journey’s 1981 schlock-rock anthem “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Last night, Vince Gilligan went in a different direction with the song he selected for the closing moments of Breaking Bad’s final episode. Badfinger’s 1972 hit “Baby Blue” was a high-middlebrow choice: a rock-snob pick, a crate-digger’s special.Badfinger were a power-pop band; you could almost call them the power-pop band. They have the kind of scruffy underdog profile that the genre’s diehards love to love, the classic power-pop cri de coeur being: [Insert name of adorable also-ran quartet] is the greatest; if there was any justice in the world, [insert song title] would be No. 1 on the charts, not [insert title of hit by pop diva]! In Badfinger’s case, the hard-luck story has a tragic dimension. Lead singer Pete Ham hanged himself in 1975; Tom Evans, one of...

Raquel Welch helps Ringo Starr find the magic in The Magic Christian.
Directed by Joseph McGrath, the 1969 cult comedy film The Magic Christian starring Peter Sellers (The Pink Panther) and Ringo Starr comes from the pen of the brilliant Terry Southern (Dr. Strangelove, Barbarella), based on his 1959 comic novel of the same name.
In the movie, Sir Guy Grand (Sellers), the richest man in the world, whimsically adopts a young homeless man (Starr) who he happens to meet by chance during a stroll in the park. Together they set off on a series of inspired escapades that comically attack the snobbery and hypocrisy of modern society. Moving from one misadventure to another, they have encounters with characters portrayed by such noteworthy performers as Richard Attenborough (The Great Escape), Laurence Harvey (Summer and Smoke), Raquel Welch (Hannie Caulder), Christopher Lee...

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (Warner Bros.) An eleven year-old boy (newcomer Thomas Horn, in an incredible debut) discovers a mysterious key amongst the possessions of his late father (Tom Hanks) who perished in 9/11. Determined to find the lock it matches, the boy embarks on a Picaresque odyssey across New York City. Director Stephen Daldry and screenwriter Eric Roth have fashioned a film both grand and intimate, beautifully-adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel, thought by most who read it to be unfilmable. Fine support from Jeffrey Wright, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis and the great Max von Sydow. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
Battle Royale: The Complete Collection (Anchor Bay) Adapted from Koushun Takami’s polarizing novel (compared by champions and detractors alike as a 21st century version of A Clockwork Orange) and set in a futuristic Japan,...

JohnBelushi and Chris Farley passed away too young at the age of 33, but they seemlike old men in comparison to the members of the 27 Club. Glen highlights the tracks that tend to get aired just a little too often in modern day movies...
There are quite literally millions of songs available on this planet called Earth, catering to all ages and tastes. But in spite of the vastness of this musical back catalogue, there seems to be a small percentage that crop up time and time again in films, depriving other songs of much deserved royalties.
In an attempt to encourage the movers and shakers of the movie industry (like they actually read this) to spread the love, I thought I’d highlight a few songs that have been over-used in the movies.
Just to clarify, I don’t necessarily hate the songs included (except Who Let The Dogs Out, but that’s not really a song). It’s just that I’ve heard enough of them in the movies, and think they should be...

The May 4 performance show of "American Idol" had "Now and Then" as the theme. The five remaining contestants performed two songs: one current song and one tune from the 1960s. Jimmy Iovine was joined by Sheryl Crow to mentor the gang this week.
The competition started with contemporary songs and James Durbin opted to sing "Closer to the Edge" by 30 Seconds to Mars. Though it was not so special, the judges only had good words for him. Steven Tyler called it "nice going" and "beautiful", while Randy Jackson said, "Now you're showing us where you could go as an artist...James is in it to win it, America."
Jacob Lusk came out next with "No Air" by Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown. Randy thought he does not fit in the pop music, stating "I don't think that's the direction for you...I don't see you as Chris Brown or Jordin Sparks,...

The Alamo Guide
for January 8th, 2010
Apologies for the late email this week. I was celebrating 2010 out of town, and then when I got home I was distracted by the intensity of the Texas vs. Alabama game. Bummerrrr. Oh well. We can all drown our sorrows in some Alamo fun this weekend! First of all, The Monster Squad screening was so popular that we added a second one later that night so there’s still a chance to see the Cast And Creators In Attendance! Youth In Revolt, The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus, and Crazy Heart all open up this weekend. Girlie Night presents Romy & Michele’S High School Reunion on Tuesday, so get your business women outfits ready (but please have your fake job description ready)! If you’re a foodie and love our Alamo feasts, The Alamo Iron Chef competition returns with a battle between Alamo kitchen and...
