For this perplexing British production Peter Sellers fronts a solid cast in a numbingly literal tale of seven men buried alive in a wartime warehouse of supplies and foodstuffs — and who are forced to stay there for years, praying for rescue. Stories of this kind usually come with a heavy moral or dramatic pyrotechnics, but after the opening barrage that drives the men underground, the balance of the film is a slow march toward the inevitable. The supply of candles lasts for an entire two years . . . and then runs out. Excellent extras cover the production in detail, and a 1945 documentary about the Channel Islands is an unexpected delight.

It's Christmas party time, which also means it's ugly Christmas sweater season! Also: Automatons: The Book of the Movie's Amazon premiere and a look at the On the Trail of UFOs trailer.
Ugly Sweater Party Blu-ray Signing at Dark Delicacies: "For ten long years, the ghost of executed serial killer Declan Rains (Sean Whalen) has been trapped inside of an ugly Christmas sweater, waiting to kill again! But when goody-goody Cliff (Charles Chudabala) wears the haunted garment to an ugly sweater party, he is possessed by Declan and forced to murder the party guests. As the sweater’s grip becomes stronger, not even an aggressively horny bible thumper (Felissa Rose) can pull the sweater away from Cliff’s corrupted flesh. When it comes to Doctor Who, the character often wins over the audiences because they are kind-hearted and in many ways, are the saviour (or Doctor) we need. While a lot of focus does get given to the ‘new’ breed of Doctors, for fans of the old school we are spoilt for choice with who is the best. One that is high on my list has to be Jon Pertwee, which is why The Doctors: The Jon Pertwee Years was such a joy to watch.
A collection of interviews, The Doctors: The Jon Pertwee Years features Jon Pertwee himself, Katy Manning (Jo Grant), Caroline John (Liz Shaw), Nicholas Courtney (The Brigadier), Richard Franklin (Captain Yates), and John Levene (Sergeant Benton). Interviewed by the voice of the Daleks, Nicholas Briggs. Each interview with the stars of Doctor Who is around one hour in length, so you can imagine how interesting the Jon Pertwee one is.

The Yeti attack at Covent Garden in recently recovered Doctor Who episode, The Web Of Fear, is a masterwork. Here's why...
The Web Of Fear was commissioned after a positive response to The Abominable Snowmen by then Story Editor (soon-to-be Producer) Peter Bryant, with the intention that it would close out Doctor Who’s fifth season. Rewrites for Fury From The Deep resulted in it becoming the penultimate story (one of many variables that resulted in Nicholas Courtney playing the role of Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart). Previously available as an audio soundtrack narrated by Fraser Hines, the film of The Web Of Fear was returned to the BBC archives in 2013.
I first experienced The Web Of Fear as a Target Novelisation at some point in the Nineties (I can’t remember if it was in Uddingston Library – so many Targets, so many Asterix books – or my primary school’s...

The Initiative arguably marks a new phase of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Oz has left the building, casting off yet another of the early years remnants. Only Buffy, Xander, Willow and Giles remain – although James Marsters finally graduates to full-time member and reluctant hanger-on of the Scooby Gang. It's also the story where squeaky-clean curtain head Riley starts to fit into the puzzle. Which can only mean that the series reveals what all these mysterious Commandos are all about.
With the dawning of a new era, both in this season and of the whole show, it's mysterious that The Initiative episode is a bit flat. I guess that any episode which revolves around a bunch of dull army goons wouldn't ever score highly on my list of quintessential ways to spend 45 minutes with the telly. Army and sci-fi rarely go together well, resulting in lots of tedious gun battles and laughable machismo.

We take a look at what to put in the stockings of Doctor Who and Sherlock fans this Christmas...
Obviously we have the latest instalment of the Moffat Christmas Carol to look forward to later this month, as Matt Smith bows out in a flurry of elbows and hairpieces, but Doctor Who doesn't have to stop there. You can artificially extend the experience by virtue of Doctor Who-themed presents.
While you can, of course, give someone the gift of a Wirrrn/Zoe Heriot costume just by giving them a roll of bubble wrap, we all know it's the thought that counts*, and the above thought is weird. If, like us, your brain is currently an addled mass of future tears, you might appreciate some help in assembling your thoughts into something constructive. God knows I would, but he's all busy with his son's birthday.

Sergeant Benton
Portrayed by: John Levene
Doctor: Third Doctor, Fourth Doctor
Story: 17 stories, from The Invasion (Nov, 1968) to Mawdryn Undead (Feb, 1983)
Background: Sergeant Benton is an officer working with Unit. Though he does share two stories with the Second Doctor, one as an unnamed soldier, he functions primarily as an ally for the Unit stories of the Third and Fourth Doctors. We know little about his past, but he does serve as a contrast to Capt. Yates, implying he had a decidedly less privileged upbringing.
Family/Friends: Sgt. Benton has a sister, but otherwise very little is known of his biological family. Over the course of his run however, Benton develops a close friendship with the Brigadier, Sgt. Yates, the Doctor, and his Companions, becoming part of what is known as the Unit family.
Personality: Sgt. Benton is a good-natured if somewhat dim man, at least compared to his brilliant compatriots.

Andrew checks out the DVD release of Tom Baker story Terror Of The Zygons...
This review contains spoilers.
It's aptly named, is Terror of the Zygons. Its opening episode is a slow-build towards one gloriously unexpected shock moment. Even now, when you know it's coming, it's a brilliant moment of jarring editing. A sudden reveal, a scream, a zoom into a shadowy monstrous face, cue credits. You don't quite have time to process it before its over.
That's after some enjoyably ripe Hammer horror scene-setting in the north-east of Scotland. Tales of ancient horror are spun to incredulous newcomers, and we occasionally cut away to ineffable alien eyes. Most formidable of all, of course, is Tom Baker. Here he's in prime unnerving form amidst a lot of competition. Perhaps there was a competition between him, Lillias Walker and Robert Russell. That would certainly explain a lot.

Pros at the con, clockwise from top left: Tony with John Levene, Garrett Wang, 'Scotty', 'Spock', Halo Kitty. Inset left, David Warner. All more fun than a convention full of monkeys... Photo: Tony Sullivan Fin. The End. The Dragon Con was decidedly emptier despite the holiday, queuing etiquette thrown out in some cases, meaning that I caught tail end of a Smallville panel and remained for Battlestar Galactica panel with Richard Hatch (Tom Zarek), Kandyse McClure (Anastasia Dualla), Tahmoh Penikett (Karl 'Helo' Agathon) and Edward James Olmos (William Adama).
BSG is a show that the actors are as passionate about as the fans. Penikett explained that his character was only meant to be in a couple of episodes, but the part was expanded by the writers for him. Olmos suggested that the audience should watch BSG from start to finish and following on from the final scene should watch the film Blade Runner,...

My pick for best fancy dress at Dragon*Con goes to the man with the Home Depot Horta from Star Trek's first season. Photo: Tony Sullivan My third day at the Dragon*Con scif-fi and fantasy event kicked off with a Doctor Who companions panel. Present were Noel Clarke (Mickey Smith), Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper), Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto Jones) and veteran John Levene (Sergeant Benton). When asked what their favourite creature was, Myles quickly responded "John Barrowman".
Next up, Team Arrow, Kelly Hu, Seth Gable, Janina Gavankar, Manu Bennett and the irrepressible John Barrowman. In fact, I think they should just hand over the whole convention to Barrowman. Gavankar managed to hold her own, while Barrowman recreated falling off his chair from a panel the previous day and re-enacted a torture scene with Manu Bennett standing in for Stephen Amell, which involved a gratuitous nipple tweak.

I caught up with Doctor Who DVD documentary maker and BAFTA nominated director Chris Chapman to chat about his animated reconstruction of The Ice Warriors, which is now available on DVD (details here) and his career so far in the world of Who documentaries.
How did you get involved in the animation of the missing episodes of The Ice Warriors?
I've been a Doctor Who fan since I was a kid. And first I became a producer of documentaries and so I thought, 'Well, why aren't I making Doctor Who documentaries?' I got in touch with Dan Hall at the classic Doctor Who range and said, 'Please let me do Doctor Who documentaries,' and he said yes. And then I made Doctor Who documentaries,...

A classic Doctor Who story gets another re-release. But is this newly-minted Inferno DVD a worthy purchase? Andrew takes a look...
The main reason for buying this re-release of Pertwee-era serial Inferno is its improved picture quality. It's instantly noticeable when compared with the 2006 release, and makes the film and video transitions less jarring. It is so sharp that it could be mistaken for the Third Doctor's dress sense, although he gets somewhat rumpled in this one.
Inferno, for a seven-parter, largely manages to avoid feeling padded. Season seven had its production schedule imposed on it by the outgoing Troughton-era team; the new regime of Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks were concerned that the two seven-parters scheduled might drag on a bit, and came up with sub-plots that could keep the momentum going and re-energise the narrative. In Inferno's case, this resulted in a...

.A dandy and a clown!. The Doctor is in dire need of help with some monsters as well as a way to celebrate his ten years on the air. Both situations usually have you calling upon old friends for help. What resulted is a cracking adventure that features the Doctor.s previous incarnations. A gel-like plasma creature arrives on Earth and hunts down the Doctor (Jon Pertwee). As the creature cuts a close call, the Doctor, Jo (Katy Manning), and Sgt. Benton (John Levene) duck inside the Tardis to escape. The Doctor calls on the Time Lords for help. The Time Lords themselves are in crisis as their energy is being drawn off into a black hole.

It’s the latest effort from James Felix McKenney (Automatons) and producer Larry Fessenden and it stars a whole lot of old-school horror icons, Angus Scrimm and Reggie Bannister among them. It’s Satan Hates You and Fangoria have just gotten an exclusive look at the trailer.
Inspired by films from the golden age of religious cinema, Satan Hates You is a graphic horror film that tells the stories of two individuals and their personal struggles with Lucifer himself.
We follow Marc (Don Wood) a homicidal maniac driven by demons buried deep within his soul, and Wendy (Christine Spencer) a young woman who lives life fast and hard without a second’s thought to the consequences. Their separate paths will eventually cross, but will it be on the road to salvation or the highway to hell?

From James Felix McKenney (Automatons) and the whole Glass Eye Pix Crew (where should I start? The Last Winter, I Sell the Dead, Wendy and Lucy) comes a film we first mentioned Wayyy back in November 2007. A throwback to Christian scare films of the 50s, 60s, and 70s, James directed this himself and like any other Monsterpants/Glass Eye Pix film I'm greatly looking forward to it.. Did I say these guys got the magic touch? Just look who's in it: Larry Fessenden, Angus Scrimm, Reggie Bannister, Michael Berryman, Debbie Rochon, Pauly Perrette, John Levene and a cameo from author Max Brooks.
