It's still 2024, but the 2020s have already offered a range of weird, mind-boggling movies for those looking for something out of the ordinary. Beyond filmmakers known for their unorthodox approach, such as David Lynch, Yorgos Lanthimos, and David Cronenberg, there are many up-and-coming filmmakers determined to cause discomfort and surprise viewers with stories that challenge one's perception of the conventional.
By winning the prestigious Best Picture Award in 2023, Everything Everywhere All at Once proved that there's a space for the absurd among the standard type of movie audiences are used to watching. The success of the film certainly inspired filmmakers to come forward with their weirdest ideas while simultaneously prompting viewers to look for fresh movies beyond what the major studios deliver every year.

Last year “Succession” broke the record for the most acting nominations in a single year at the Emmys with 14, and it tied that tally in its final season in 2023. Like last year there are three women from the show in the Best Drama Guest Actress category, one of whom is a perennial favorite and a previous winner for the HBO satirical drama: Cherry Jones for her role as Nan Pierce.
See‘Succession’ is poised to complete its Golden Globes winning streak
Jones began her career as a founding member of the American Repertory Theater in 1980 and has been inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame, having performed in distinguished plays such as “Stepping Out,” “Our Country’s Good,” “Angels in America,” “A Moon for the Misbegotten,” and “The Glass Menagerie” and winning Tony Awards for Best Actress for “The Heiress” and “Doubt.” On screen, she has had an active...

“The Bear” cooked up a storm for its freshman season at the Emmy Awards, gaining a total of 13 nominations across the board with bids in acting, writing, directing, editing, casting, sound and of course Best Comedy Series. Having debuted way early in the Emmy eligibility period, it has sustained its buzz throughout the year with various award wins at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, Writers Guild of America and Producers Guild of America. Included as part of their showcase is Oliver Platt for Best Comedy Guest Actor for his performance as Jimmy “Cicero” Kalinowski, his fifth nomination overall. Can he finally win an Emmy?
This is Platt’s first Emmy bid in a comedy category, having previously been mentioned for three dramas: “The West Wing” in 2001 and “Nip/Tuck” in 2008 for Best Drama Guest Actor, and “Huff” from 2005-2006 for Best Drama Supporting Actor. Other credits he has had in...

Premiering last summer, “The Bear” has become the most-watched comedy series in FX history. Season 1 amassed a total of 13 Emmy nominations, making it the third most-nominated comedy this year behind “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (14) and “Ted Lasso” (21). Included as part of their showcase is Jon Bernthal for Best Comedy Guest Actor for his performance as Michael “Mikey” Berzatto, his first Emmy bid after over 20 years working in the industry.
Like many actors, Bernthal’s first television appearance was in the “Law & Order” franchise on the spinoff “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” in 2002. After many appearances on a number of network dramas and sitcoms, he became known for his role as Shane Walsh in the first two seasons of “The Walking Dead,” and went on to work with such revered film directors as Martin Scorsese (“The Wolf of Wall Street”), Denis Villeneuve (“Sicario”) and Edgar Wright (“Baby Driver”). Movie trailers and plot descriptions can set high expectations for films, but many end up disappointing due to poor execution. From lackluster science fiction epics to humorless comedies, films often fall short of their initial promise. The best movies combine good ideas with strong execution, something that many films fail to achieve.
Movie trailers and enticing plot descriptions often set high expectations for a film, only for the final product to end up deeply disappointing. Many films start with clever concepts, sometimes based on successful novels, but stumble in bringing their vision to life. Whether it's due to lackluster dialogue, mediocre acting, subpar direction, or lazy special effects, promising movies can turn into disastrous messes. Conversely, exceptional execution can elevate less-than-great concepts into seemingly excellent films.

Exclusive: Chris McCumber is departing Blumhouse Television after three years as President. The unit’s President of Production, Jeremy Gold, will step into the top role on an interim basis. A search is underway for a new head of the TV group, which is getting downsized, with several people — believed to be fewer than 10 — being laid off today. (Blumhouse’s total headcount in film and TV is almost 100.)
The staff reductions are coming mostly from the TV division’s Creative and Business Affairs departments, sources said. The unscripted group, led by Gretchen Palek, will remain intact, as will Blumhouse’s shared services groups including Production, Casting, Hr, Marketing and Finance.

With the streaming bubble bursting and entertainment companies retooling their vision for the future of television, it seems like every new day yields a polarizing series cancellation. From viewership stats to marketing pitfalls and budgetary concerns, TV series are seeing the plug pulled at a seemingly faster rate than ever before — in some cases, after production has been completed and even before they’ve had a chance to air.
For example, after outcry over recently canned series like “1899,” “First Kill” and “Warrior Nun,” Netflix’s new co-ceos Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters said they have never canceled a “successful show.” Platforms like AMC, Starz, Showtime and HBO Max have pulled shows despite having the majority of filming finished or nearly done so. And for Hulu, journalists and audiences raised disappointment following the cancellation of “Reboot.”

People say truth is stranger than fiction, but the story in "Cocaine Bear" the movie is definitely more interesting than the true story behind it. In real life, the bear dubbed Pablo Eskobear ate a bunch of coke that was dumped from a drug smuggling plane and died from an overdose. In the vision of bloody mayhem created by director Elizabeth Banks and writer Jimmy Warden, though, the bear in question went on a drug-fueled murder spree, mauling anyone who got in her way. Even Margo Martindale wasn't safe!
"Cocaine Bear" landed in the zeitgeist earlier this year, taking Twitter by storm before its release, thanks to its wild title and even wilder premise. The movie ultimately grossed over $87 million at the box office (per Box Office Mojo). An attention-catching genre mashup with a relatively lean budget and a good theatrical haul should be like studio exec catnip, so where's the "Cocaine Bear" sequel news?...

1990’s Days of Thunder was the end of an era for Tom Cruise. It would be the last movie he’d make as part of his “youth” phase, which began with Risky Business. At the time, he was best known as the cocky young hot shot, but when this movie underperformed at the box office, Cruise took some time off and returned as a more seasoned leading man, with 1992’s A Few Good Men kicking off an unprecedented streak of hits. While Days of Thunder has a valued place in Tom Cruise’s filmography and remains a popular title, when it came out, the movie was considered such a disappointment that the movie’s two producers, Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckkeimer’s deal with Paramount Pictures came to a fractious end. So what happened?

The FX original, Justified, ran for six seasons in its initial run from 2010-2015. It's received critical acclaim as one of television's best modern Westerns. The story follows U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) as he navigates crimes within his hometown of Harlan, Kentucky. Over the course of the series, Raylan faces criminals of varying caliber from small-time crooks to even the highest rankings of the Dixie Mafia. Many of them are formidable, such as recurring characters like Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) and Avery Markham (Sam Elliott), but none compare to Maggie "Mags" Bennett (Margo Martindale).

Cocaine Bear 2 is not confirmed yet, but director Elizabeth Banks expressed excitement and willingness to direct a sequel, showcasing her love for the subversive and funny nature of the original film. Universal Studios would likely greenlight a sequel due to the success of the first film and the potential for streaming popularity. A $40-million-budget Cocaine Bear 2 is a safe bet for the studio. While the cast of Cocaine Bear 2 would likely be new characters, Elizabeth Banks herself could potentially play a main role in the sequel. The titular character in the sequel could be any deadly animal or reptile, like Cocaine Shark or Cocaine Crocodile.

Elizabeth Banks is on a roll in Hollywood. For many, Banks rose to prominence as the Daily Bugle’s own Betty Brant in filmmaker Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. However, acting wasn’t enough for Banks, and the artist soon expanded her interests to include producing and directing. And helming Cocaine Bear, as the movie’s director, only got her addicted to the notion of further exploring that world. Yes, Banks revealed that she is definitely down to do a sequel. Banks said in an interview Rolling Stone:

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Justified: City Primeval” Episode 4, “Kokomo.”]
A common occurrence in “Justified” sees Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) sit down with someone most people would consider scary, but rather than beg off, back down, or express much emotion (beyond his trademark frustration mixed with mild curiosity), the U.S. Marshall is forced to reflect on the nature of his duties. Past bosses like Mags Bennett (Margo Martindale) and Ellstin Limehouse (Mykelti Williamson) are perhaps the best examples, given the credible moral dilemmas each local leader elicits from Raylan, but challenges of principle can come from just about anyone. Like, say, Toma (Terry Kinney), the Albanian mob boss who invites Raylan for a chat after the “accident” suffered by his nephew, Skender (Alexander Pobutsky).
With a pushy Norbert (Norbert Leo Butz) in tow, Raylan arrives at the meeting planning to convince Toma to let Skender tell the truth: that he didn’t fall down the...

Seconds after Jamie Lee Curtis walks through the door at Wigmaker Associates in Beverly Hills on a pre-strike July morning, the recently minted Oscar winner comes face-to-face with an army of famous names. There are rows upon rows of them, monikers covering heads made of canvas blocks that atelier owner Rob Pickens and his staff use to custom-make wigs worn by Ana de Armas in Blonde, Millie Bobby Brown in Stranger Things and Amanda Seyfried in Mank.
“I see many of my friends,” declares Curtis as she scans the shelves, pausing to pay special attention to one in particular. “Hi, honey! Here’s my sweet,” she says, planting a kiss on the one named Christopher Guest, her filmmaker husband since 1984. Then Curtis spots another. “I just worked with [Margo Martindale] on a fabulous show called The Sticky. It’s weird when you’re my age, you know all these people.

The box office success of Cocaine Bear, which earned over $89 million globally, suggests that a sequel is a possibility. While a sequel may face the challenge of avoiding being a rehash of the first film, there are potential avenues for further adventures, as hinted by the ending of the original film.

Director Elizabeth Banks is keeping her fingers crossed for Cocaine Bear to get a sequel.
Released in theaters earlier this year, Cocaine Bear was a big success. Its reviews were mostly positive, as Cocaine Bear certainly delivered on its expectations, and the film went on to gross nearly $90 million worldwide on a budget of around $30 million. There hasn't been any indication at this time that the movie will get a sequel, but in a recent chat with Rolling Stone, Banks said he'd jump at the chance to return for Cocaine Bear 2, given how much fun she had putting the first film together.

Elizabeth Banks is open to making a Cocaine Bear sequel.
In a conversation with Rolling Stone, the director and actress shared that she had a great time working on the film, which follows a 500-pound black bear after it consumes a significant amount of cocaine and embarks on a drug-fueled rampage in a Georgia forest.
“I loved how subversive, crazy, silly and funny it was,” she said. “I loved surprising people with the cast. I don’t think anybody was expecting Margo Martindale, who’s 70 years old, to shoot that kid. We had a lot [of] fun, and if I got the opportunity to surprise the audience and delight myself again, I would take it.”
Banks shared that she hoped that directing the film would show that she can helm big, fun, bloody genre pictures in addition to things like Pitch Perfect 2 and Charlie’s Angels. Her diverse directing interests resemble her acting career.

When one thinks of the satirical, deeply emotional animated series BoJack Horseman, a quirky world inhabited by anthropomorphic animals and humans in Hollywood instantly springs to mind. The genius of series creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg was in crafting these cartoon characters in such a manner that they felt deeply human, masking profound narratives beneath layers of hilarious gags and vibrant colors. Through Nathan Lichter's creative fan art, we can imagine how these celebrated characters might transition from animation to live-action.
Lichter recently shared pieces on Instagram showcasing a reimagined BoJack, the titular protagonist, along with fan-favorite characters Princess Carolyn, Diane, Todd, Sarah Lynn, and the character actor Margo Martindale, portrayed uncannily. While most of these live-action depictions evoke a familiarity akin to their animated counterparts, there's something slightly off-putting about Princess Carolyn's A.I. rendition, giving her an almost menacing aura.

BoJack Horseman in live-action may not seem strange at first, but upon reflection, it's a bizarre world where animals coexist with humans. The show's animated format allowed for visual gags and unique storytelling that would be lost in a live-action adaptation. A live-action project would likely work best as a TV series, allowing viewers to have a deeper connection with the characters over time, unlike a standalone movie.
A BoJack Horseman fan art transforms characters into live-action, and they don't appear too strange depending on the perspective. Netflix's beloved animated series offers a satire of Hollywood, in which anthropomorphic animals exist alongside humans and may even be the dominant population. This was partly an effort from series creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg to make the characters more relatable. It worked, as the outlandish scenarios and goofy setup masked an excellent but occasionally emotionally difficult show that explored heavy subjects.

Few shows lend themselves to revivals naturally. “Justified,” the critically acclaimed FX drama starring Timothy Olyphant as Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, might not seem like a prime candidate to return after the Emmy-winning series nailed its series finale in 2015. But the show is coming back on July 18 for a limited eight-episode run under the title “Justified: City Primeval.” From a logistical standpoint, bringing back TV’s coolest lawman makes sense: “Justified,” which featured mostly stand-alone, season-long arcs during its excellent six-season run, is perfectly suited to one-off limited series. It’s also a beloved show that balances comedy and drama well, has the respect of many in Hollywood and understands the unique narrative value of place in a way that many series do not.
Whether “Justified: City Primeval” is able to recapture the magic of the original run is yet to be seen, but as our reunion with Raylan is upon us,...

Plot: Having left the hollers of Kentucky 15 years ago, Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) now lives in Miami, a walking anachronism balancing his life as a U.S. Marshal and part-time father of a 15-year-old girl. His hair is grayer, his hat is dirtier, and the road in front of him is suddenly a lot shorter than the road behind. A chance encounter on a desolate Florida highway sends him to Detroit. There he crosses paths with Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), aka The Oklahoma Wildman, a violent, sociopathic desperado who’s already slipped through the fingers of Detroit’s finest once and aims to do so again.

If you’re behind on your peak TV watching, consider this your spoiler warning. It’s been nearly a year since Julia Garner collected her third and final Emmy for “Ozark,” which made her the seventh comedy or drama series regular to snag a TV academy prize for a season in which her character died. Nominations of this kind have become more common in recent years, and it’s possible that over 15% of the 2023 lead and supporting continuing series contenders will fit into the group.
Gold Derby’s Emmy nominations odds currently indicate that eight actors whose comedic or dramatic characters met their demise within the last year could feasibly earn bids, as all of them are ranked no lower than 12th place in their respective races. This does not include characters like Bunny Folger or John Paul Williams who died prior to the starts of their shows’ latest seasons but still appear in flashbacks.

Every so often, you come across a curious Emmys stat that just grabs your attention. This year, we noticed Emmy voters’ love for variety in one specific category — Best Drama Actor.
In this category, the last eight years have given us eight new, different winners for different shows. They are, in descending order: last year’s winner Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”), Josh O’Connor, Jeremy Strong, Billy Porter, Matthew Rhys, Sterling K. Brown, Rami Malek, and Jon Hamm. Bryan Cranston won in 2014 for “Breaking Bad” — he’d already won for the same show in 2008, 2009, and 2010.
So, there you have it. That’s a run of eight years where this Emmy has gone to a different performer and a different show. In that timeframe, there has been no overlap in terms of the same actor winning, nor has the same show won for different actors. Complete newness across the board for eight years.

Warning: Spoilers for Mrs. Davis episode 8A streaming insider clarifies the status of Mrs. Davis season 2 after that bonkers finale. Though the Peacock series, created by Damon Lindelof and Tara Hernandez, pitched itself as a heated battle between one nun (played by Betty Gilpin) and artificial intelligence, Mrs. Davis and its wild subversions were often more interested in exploring questions of faith and motherhood in a way that was frequently hilarious and just as often thought-provoking.
Although no official announcement has been made regarding Mrs. Davis season 2, a source at Peacock told TVLine that are no plans for the show to return for a second installment. The apparent confirmation comes after Mrs. Davis took an abrupt Emmy shift, switching from the comedy category to compete instead as a limited series.

"Mrs. Davis" is built on a wild premise that somehow manages to only get crazier as the show goes on. The series tells the story of a nun named Simone (Betty Gilpin) determined to destroy an all-powerful artificial intelligence - and along the way, she finds herself tasked with finding and destroying the Holy Grail itself. From the get-go, the show promises a fantastic and chaotic ride, but even the most imaginative viewer (or advanced AI) probably couldn't have dreamed up what actually happens in the show's eighth and final episode.
Over the course of the show, Simone has been trying to find the Holy Grail because Mrs. Davis, the artificial intelligence in question, told her to. In exchange for the Grail, Mrs. Davis promises to grant Simone one wish. Simone has a vendetta against Mrs. Davis because she believes the algorithm killed her father, a magician, so she becomes...

It's a bear that does cocaine. Need we say more? This year's Cocaine Bear was a fun anomaly in cinema. It wasn't a conventional horror movie, but it also didn't go out of its way to parody the genre. So, what is it?
Whatever it was, it was a success. Despite mixed critical reviews, it was a box office success with a gross of $89 million against its $30 million budget. It even has a Funko Pop. And that $30 million budget seems high. The story took a few liberties from its source material, as the real-life "Cocaine Bear" died pretty soon after consuming the drugs without ripping anyone to shreds. That would have been a much quicker movie.
As mentioned, the bear that does cocaine doesn't fall into one box regarding genre. On the one hand, the film does check many of the tropes of "killer-on-the-loose" movies. On the other hand, however,...

Over the years, dozens of actors have accomplished the feat of being Emmy-nominated in one guest category for multiple shows, but only one has been recognized in this manner for playing a single character. This special case involved Shelley Long, who received comedic notices for playing Diane Chambers on both “Cheers” (1993) and “Frasier” (1996). After more than a quarter century of standing alone in this distinction, she could soon be joined by Carrie Preston, who won the 2013 Best Drama Guest Actress award as eccentric lawyer Elsbeth Tascioni on “The Good Wife” and is now seeking a bookend trophy for its Paramount Plus spinoff, “The Good Fight.”

“Mrs. Davis” may be one of the most surprising and unconventional new series of the spring — and now it’s making a surprising and unconventional move in the Emmy race as well. As the Television Academy deadline for category submissions ends today, Peacock has decided to make a last-minute shift and move the series into the limited/anthology series categories.
Betty Gilpin stars in “Mrs. Davis” as Simone, a sometimes nun who takes on her nemesis, the artificial intelligence being known only as “Mrs. Davis,” and strikes a deal with the algorithm — which promises to shut down if Simone finds and destroys the holy grail. Location scouting and filming on service productions were already cooling down in Canada over the past few weeks in anticipation of the WGA strike on May 1. And while those projects with completed scripts are trudging forward, one “substantial” unnamed series being shot in Toronto has already shut down, according to the city.
It’s just the start of what could be a big financial loss for the Ontario industry, where Ontario Creates reveals 419 productions in 2022 — including TV series like “The Boys” and films like “Women Talking” — contributed a record-breaking $3.15 billion to the economy.
In B.C., where many service productions have wrapped for the season and writers’ rooms would typically begin assembling over the next few weeks, people are preparing for unforeseen delays. A prolonged strike will inevitably not only affect those who have been steadily employed for years, but also the provincial economy, which drew $3.6 billion from the film industry last year,...

Nine years after he won his fourth and final acting Emmy for playing Walter White on “Breaking Bad,” Bryan Cranston has a solid shot at triumphing in the corresponding Best Drama Guest Actor category for reprising the role on the prequel series “Better Call Saul” on AMC. Character actors are in their own unique class within the acting community. These thespians tend to gravitate toward the unusual characters rather than the more mainstream, cookie-cutter roles. But from the sidelines, these actors dig into their parts, creating something meaty and memorable. There are plenty of great character actors out there, such as Sam Elliot and Judy Greer, yet many get typecast and are unable to show off their range as an actor. That, however, cannot be said for Margo Martindale.

Keri Russell is back. The Emmy-nominated star of “The Americans” returns to TV with the new Netflix series “The Diplomat” from showrunner Debora Cahn. In the eight-episode political drama, which is streaming now, Russell stars as Kate Wyler, a competent and confident woman in her first ambassadorship who, unbeknownst to her, is being considered for the position of vice president.
Although Kate expects to be sent to Afghanistan at the start of the limited series, she quickly finds herself named the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom after an attack on the Royal Navy. Once she touches down across the pond, Kate must prove she can navigate high-stakes crises and forge strategic alliances while secretly dealing with a failing marriage to another career diplomat (Rufus Sewell). Here’s a not-so-fun fact that will ruin your day: “Better Call Saul” has never won an Emmy. And so that’s what really hooked me.”
Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan based on actual events, “The Watcher” tells the story of a family that moves to the suburbs only to be terrorized by letters from an anonymous stalker. Co-star Naomi Watts knows a thing or...
