So rarely do modern audiences get to experience a “cult classic” film or television show anymore. The internet has seen to that. Even independent films that 20-30 years ago would have to rely on word of mouth or for the local Blockbuster to run out of copies to create any kind of buzz now get thousands of people sharing their thoughts about it within online forums.
It is with no sense of irony that The Venture Bros. is perhaps one of the last cult classics. The animated series is one of the veterans of Cartoon Network’s original Adult Swim line of shows, and throughout the last two decades has clawed its way to survive seven seasons and stave off cancellation. How does one say goodbye after 20 years? That’s the lofty task that The Venture Bros. faces with this concluding movie-length finale, Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart, and it does so with nerdy, passionate grace. The Venture Bros. has produced seven seasons, but it made its Adult Swim premiere back in 2003 when the then-fledgling network only had five original programs to its name and superhero parodies were niche, not the new normal. Now, it celebrates its swan song during a time when most people will view this series finale feature film on Max, sandwiched between endless superhero content. The animation industry and television as a whole have greatly transformed since The Venture Bros.’s debut, yet Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart proves that The Venture Bros.

As one of the longest running programs in Adult Swim history, it was devastating when "The Venture Bros." was canceled in September of 2020 after 17 years and seven seasons on the late-night line-up. What started off as a modern send-up of "Jonny Quest" quickly became one of the funniest animated series ever made. The cancelation was especially heartbreaking, as series creator Jackson Publick (aka Christopher McCulloch) had made it known that the team was currently writing the show's eighth season. Hammer expressed his disappointment of the show's ending with Comic Book Resources, saying:

A ton of shows have fallen victim to tightened budgets amid the infuriatingly still-ongoing, disastrously managed Covid-19 pandemic, but of all the canceled shows of 2020, the one that hurt us perhaps the most was “The Venture Bros.” The Adult Swim series, which had run for 7 seasons over 17 years, got the axe in September despite having been renewed for an 8th and final season back in 2018.
But in an exciting plot twist, it looks like the show may get that finale in some form or another after all on HBO Max, and apparently it’s due in part to the cult show’s extremely polite fans. And lest you think this is just a rumor, the happy news came straight from the mouth of HBO Max general manager himself, Andy Forssell.

And in season finale, “The Saphrax Protocol, “their relationship took a turn that hints at what could turn into the show’s most tragic story to date: The Venture Bros. as arch enemies.
It became clear midway through Season 7 that, while Hank and Dean didn’t get as much screen time as they might have in previous seasons, the emotional heart of the series was with them. Season 7 of “The Venture Bros.” has already had a ton of callbacks to past seasons, turning what felt like throw-away gags into suddenly-relevant lore or character details. But in the season’s penultimate episode, “The Forecast Manufacturer,” a callback teases a huge possibility for the entire series — that the universe in which it takes place has been the wrong one all along.
In “The Forecast Manufacturer” the eastern seaboard has been hit by a devastating blizzard caused by a weather control machine being operated by rogue supervillain The Creep (James Adomian). Creep used to be a member of the Guild of Calamitous Intent, but defected to its rival Canadian organization, the Peril Partnership, and thus The Mighty Monarch (Christopher McCulloch) and Henchman 21 (Doc Hammer) are dispatched by the Guild to infiltrate the Creep’s base and kill him.

The episodes of “The Venture Bros.” that always seem the most ridiculous are the ones that could probably be called the most meaningful.
Take “The Bellicose Proxy,” in which the show once again dives deep into the idea of a highly regulated bureaucracy of secret agents, supervillains, mitigated collateral damage and a whole lot of rules — and actually manages to offer up a vision of a world working in a way you can’t help but wish the real world did.

Now that “The Venture Bros.” has dished out a bunch of lore twists and set them aside, the Adult Swim animated series has quickly come back on track of telling the story of two young men trying to find their way through their weirdo life.
The fifth episode of the season, “The Inamorata Consequence,” still does that awesome “Venture” thing of plumbing the depths of things that have been mentioned on the show before to drop a lore reveal you probably never thought about, but makes perfect sense. Unlike in the first three episodes of the season, though, when the show was tying off a bunch of threads in “The Morpho Trilogy” just because they were dangling, the latest piece of historical info serves to create a quiet character moment for young Dean Venture (Michael Sinterniklaas) in keeping with Season 7’s themes.

The fifth episode of the season, “The Inamorata Consequence,” still does that awesome “Venture” thing of plumbing the depths of things that have been mentioned on the show before to drop a lore reveal you probably never thought about, but makes perfect sense. Fans of “The Venture Bros.” who turned in to Sunday’s episode might receive an ice cream cake for their dedication. All they had to do was call a number and pretend to be one of the show’s characters.
Sunday’s episode, “The Inamorata Consequence,” saw the two governing bodies of protagonists and antagonists in the “Venture” universe, the Office of Secret Intelligence and the Guild of Calamitous Intent, coming together at the old destroyed Venture compound for a conference. With Rusty Venture (James Urbaniak) officiating the “Treaty of Tolerance Summit,” the two groups tried to renegotiate the very strict bureaucracy of how the bad guys menace the good guys — a long-running gag in “The Venture Bros.” that imagines how the world would really function if costumed villains and heroes were constantly tussling.
The summit had what seemed like a throwaway joke early on: the catering included a Carvel Fudgie the Whale cake,...

The last two episodes of “The Venture Bros.” have set a new tone for the show’s seventh season. As always, the series is all about fathers, but this season is specifically about moving out of their shadows… and maybe killing them.
Two weeks ago, Adult Swim’s “The Venture Bros.” completed a three-episode arc that it described (after it started) as “The Morpho Trilogy.” The episodes wrapped up the events of Season 6, in which the Monarch (Christopher McCulloch) took on the role of the anti-hero Blue Morpho and started killing rival supervillains. The trilogy also dealt with a bunch of history and lore Season 6 introduced and teased — like the identity of the original Blue Morpho (Paul F. Tompkins), who turned out to be the Monarch’s father, and what ultimately happened to Jonas Venture Sr. (Paul Boocock), the father of series protagonist Rusty Venture (James Urbaniak), who supposedly died years earlier.

The Venture Bros. is an amazing show. One of the things that makes it a great show is that the show is pretty much made solely by two dudes, Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer (Christopher McCulloch and Eric A. Hammer, respectively). This is great, because it keeps things consistent and keeps a distinct personality running throughout the show. The issue is that episodes take Forever to produce. For instance, the last episode... New York Comic Con has once again rushed by in a giant, fun, crazy blur, and although I didn’t get to nearly all the things I was hoping to, I did have a rockin’ time and see some really cool things I can share.
The first of these were a few great panels I landed seats for, including, as is my tradition, the Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles panel. If you don’t know I love the current Tmnt, then what are you, new here? But seriously, I love it. And each panel I have gone to brings something new and different.
This panel (with Andrea Romano (voice director), Eric Bauza (Tiger Claw), Kevin Michael Richardson (The Shredder), Greg Cipes (Mikey), Rob Paulsen (Donnie), and Ciro Nieli (Executive Producer)) was particularly fun, because one of the things they did was a live read of episode #420, “The Super Shredder,” which...

Are you watching The Venture Bros? You really should be. While it may be easy to take a quick glance at the now six year old series and dismiss it as some kind of decades-too-late Johnny Quest parody, it’s so much more than that. Sure, it may have started off that way, but in the intervening years The Venture Bros has blossomed into a genre-spanning epic of superheroes, villains, adventure, science, coming-of-age comedy and David Bowie (Rip). It’s also, and I’m being totally serious here, one of the best examples of organic world building I can name. It’s clear that writer/directors/creators Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick have the Venture Bros universe fleshed out to an insane degree, and every twist and turn over the past several seasons has felt thought-out, planned and brilliantly executed. I’m a fan of this show, can you tell?...

All This And Gargantua-2
The Venture Bros. has never been afraid of change. The show has been on the air for twelve years at this point and its fanbase is just as strong as ever. I'd argue that the writing has become better with each season (a feat that most shows only master in reverse). I believe Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick have achieved this by being absolutely fearless when it comes to trusting that the viewers will follow them down whatever path they choose. It's a faith in themselves, too, to know that they are skilled enough to make us want to follow them. With the release of All This And Gargantua-2, I've never been more convinced that it is well warranted.

There was a certain point in history, somewhere between The Simpsons and Daria, when TV animation ceased to be the sole provenance of kids drooling over their morning bowls of Lucky Charms. These days, cartoons for grown-ups are not only ubiquitous, but hilariously twisted and high-quality to boot — and that's due in large part to a phenomenon called Adult Swim. What began as a freaky little block of late-night programming has evolved into a vast, even-freakier universe of animated and live-action series with a sardonic, absurdist sense of humor that's...

Southland, “Chaos”
Written by Zack Whedon
Directed by Christopher Chulack
Aired April 10th, 2013 on TNT
Forget Hannibal. Forget American Horror Story. Forget “The Rains of Castamere.” You want harrowing? You want soul-crushing blackness with a side of trauma? You want pure, unforgiving narrative nihilism? Try on the penultimate episode of sadly-departed cop drama Southland. Whereas the typical episode hones in on a few plotlines between seven or eight characters, “Chaos” revolves mostly around a single, nightmare-inducing act: the kidnapping of two of our principal characters by a pair of deranged meth-heads. On paper, it sounds like your average “Very Special Episode” of… really, any cop show ever. The “team member(s) get nabbed and have to be rescued by the rest of the team” setup is well-worn territory. “Chaos”, however, is a different beast entirely. Based loosely on a real incident, “Chaos” earns its title honestly, unfolding seemingly without rhyme or reason,...

The Venture Bros. has been on Adult Swim for over 10 years now. Despite that considerable amount of airtime, there’s only been five seasons with a total of 63 episodes. The amount of detail put into the show by its creators, Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick, is partially why fans had to wait so long for a fifth season. Hammer and Publick aren’t ones to write an episode and have it completed in a week’s time, a la South Park, so a full season of The Venture Bros. takes 13-14 months to complete. Season five went through a transition with new behind-the-scenes workings and with the duo at a new studio, but the show and its miserable characters remained the same. The Venture brothers & Co. have been through some transitions over the years as well, and speaking with Hammer and Publick, they wanted to make sure it was an emotional one, embracing...

If asked to name three beloved shows on Cartoon Network, the most beloved actually, you might be inclined to state Adventure Time, Regular Show, and Venture Brothers.
Two of those shows have games based upon, but one of them doesn't. So, what's the deal with Venture Brothers? That's what one guy asked during the Venture Bros panel at the recently passed San Diego Comic Con.
Simply fast forward to the 15:00 mark in the following video that Destructoid recently highlighted. Though long story short: no one has bothered to ask:
As co-creator Jackson Publick states:
"One game company would have to come to us and go 'Hey we want to [make a game].' Like nobodies ever brought that up ever."
And Doc Hammer adds:
"You act like a lot of people are coming up [to us, to ask if we'd like to do a movie. And then we're all like] 'we don't have time for a movie'… It's that, nobody asks us! We make our own t-shirts!

Three minions take a breather
On Friday, the convention kicked into full gear, with more people in attendance than the previous two days and the start of the big ticket programming in Hall H (The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones). Many of those following the TV programming at the Con opted for Ballroom 20, with Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. among the highlights. Once again, I opted for smaller rooms, starting with the Indigo Ballroom. Unfortunately, given the popularity of the programming that morning, including Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time (always a big hit at the Con) and the Adult Swim lineup, it took quite a while to get in to the room. On the plus side though, the line was a lot of fun, with a ridiculous number of creative, fun costumes (see the bottom of the post for more).

As my Televerse cohost Simon Howell and I discussed in our Top 10 TV Series of 2013 (So Far), this has been a spectacular year for television, with many shows delivering remarkably consistent seasons (or half-seasons) of memorable, moving television. A number of series were in contention for our Top 10 but didn’t quite make the cut, often because they lacked the week-in, week-out consistency of our final picks. Here is our list of the Best of the Rest, the standout episodes of 2013 from shows that didn’t make our Top 10. With so many choices, and because we’ve seen and are drawing from different series, Simon and I are offering more personalized picks here. As with our Top 10, the list is alphabetical. –Kate Kulzick

5.5 O.S.I. Love You
Attention virtually all writers everywhere: this is how you do serialized plots. This is how you provide ongoing development and foreshadowing and resolution. Jackson Publick just threw the gauntlet at the feet of every single television writer out there and to say that I am left speechless is an understatement. But it's my job to come up with words for what just happened, so endeavour I shall. But you'll have to forgive me if my review doesn't quite live up to the source material; some things must be experienced to truly be comprehended.

This Sunday, the fifth season of The Venture Bros. premieres on Adult Swim. The Venture Bros. was created by two men: Jackson Publick (aka Christopher McCulloch) and Doc Hammer. Like so many of the Adult Swim animations, Publick and Hammer write and produce nearly every episode, as well as provide the voices for many of their characters. Though the series is currently shy of sixty episodes, it’s been a little over a decade since the pilot aired. In August of 2004, the series started proper. A year and a half passed between the first and second seasons. Nearly two years stood between seasons two and three.
It’s impressive that The Venture Bros. continues. With our quicksilver attention spans, how can Publick and Hammer expect us to still be interested? Simple. The Venture Bros. is spectacular.
Animation-wise, it beats most of its adult-cartoon peers. There are countless pop culture nods and references.

Kaci celebrates the geek-friendly world of animated series The Venture Bros., starting its fifth season this May...
On the 19th of May, a little show you may not have heard of will wing its way back onto our screens in the Us. If you've ever wondered what it would be like if comic book rules applied to the real world, or if you've ever wanted to see what would've happened if Jonny Quest had been allowed to grow up and face his post-"boy adventurer" days as an adult, or even if you've just ever paused to think about how absurd the very notion of "arch villains" really is, then you need to be watching this show. It's called The Venture Bros. and it's a must-see for geeky folks like us, so here's a list of reasons why you should catch up before the season five premiere.

How’s this for a milestone: This February, The Venture Bros. will celebrate its 10-year anniversary. One of the defining shows on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim line-up, the show is coincidentally returning for its fifth season in early 2013. Before that, though, fans of the show can enjoy a special episode airing just in time for the spookiest holiday of the year. A Very Venture Halloween will air on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 11:30. Co-creators Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer will be at New York Comic-Con tomorrow talking about the future of the series, but EW has obtained an exclusive clip from the Halloween special.

It's been a long time since we've seen any new Venture Bros. episodes. I believe the last new episode was "Operation P.R.O.M.", and it was released back in 2010. But don't worry, season 5 is coming, and it starts with a Halloween special that will be released this October.
We've got our first look at the Halloween special episode, and it comes with an update from series creator Jackson Publick,
… we're just wrapping up pre-production on season 5 of The Venture Bros. We ship our last episode (which is actually the second half of what will be the premiere episode) to Korea this week. All other episodes have shipped, and all of the art staff (except for few stragglers in the Color department) have gone home. We're received take one rough cuts of the first two episodes from the overseas studio already and are expecting the third this week. Which...

Apparently, Peter Jackson can –if Warners give them more money- turn his upcoming The Hobbit into three films instead of the planned two. Asked about the reports, Jackson tells Hitfix that “We have certainly been talking to the studio about some of the material we can’t film, and we’ve been asking them so we can do a bit more filming next year. I don’t know what would come of that, whether it’d be extended editions or whatnot. But those discussions are ongoing.” While this might make some bean counters and shareholders happy, would it be necessary? While studios have found profit in expanding the final movie in a franchise, at what point does it become just a way to score more cash than add material that does not need to be added? That being said, a studio spokesman told Variety that there are “no planned or...
