It’s not just video games that dominate the digital airwaves on platforms like Twitch — there’s a huge contingent of viewers who yearn for the old days of pen and paper, with tabletop RPGs making a huge splash virtually in the last few years. In fact, once-niche games like Dungeons & Dragons (which turns 50 this year) have taken on new life in the age of livestreaming, and more popular than ever.

This article was originally published on the Funimation Blog on April 17, 2020. One of the most beloved Aniplex shows of the past decade is undoubtedly Blue Exorcist . Based on Kazue Kato’s monthly manga, the first season of Blue Exorcist — directed by Tensai Okamura, written by Ryota Yamaguchi and animated by A-1 Pictures — ran for 25 episodes and an Ova in 2011, as well as a follow-up movie the next year. Related: Sympathy for the Devil — Celebrating Blue Exorcist's Long Run The series follows delinquent Rin Okumura as he learns he and his more studious twin brother Yukio are the sons of Satan and a human woman, although Rin is the only one who inherited Satan’s powers. Of course, Yukio is an Exorcist with the Order of the True Cross, charged by the Vatican with exterminating demons and curtailing their Earthly influence. Upon its release, Blue Exorcist was an instant hit...

Epic fantasy series based on hugely popular and intricate books are on almost every network and streamer, from “House of the Dragon” and “The Rings of Power” to “The Witcher” and “The Wheel of Time.” Then there’s Amazon Prime Video’s “The Legend of Vox Machina,” an animated series as intricate and complex as any of its live-action counterparts, but with a key difference: Its source material is “Critical Role,” an improvised livestream on YouTube and Twitch in which professional actors portray characters playing Dungeons & Dragons.
“Having room to play and improv can fall by the wayside when writing for animation,” series writer Meredith Kecskemety told IndieWire. “You’re writing for the actor and you’re writing for the board artists all to determine a single performance, but having this tabletop, improvised foundation lends itself to being adapted to the screen. "Dungeons & Dragons," and tabletop RPGs in general, are some of the most fun you can do with a group. The crafting of a fantasy world and the improvised telling of a story as a community is exhilarating, and it's no surprise that livestream campaigns of these games have become so popular in recent years. As time-consuming as the games can be, they offer long-form storytelling that can never be replicated, because no two tables and no two campaigns are the same.
Of course, there are "Dungeons & Dragons" livestreams and then there's "Critical Role," a livestream show where a group of voice actors, led by Matt Mercer, play a game of "D&d." The show started streaming in 2015 and it quickly grew to titanic levels of popularity, with millions of views and subscribers. Fans were drawn to the show's laugh-out-loud crude humor, tear-jerking moments, and its story full of twists and turns,...

With only its second season underway, Prime Video’s animated adult fantasy The Legend of Vox Machina is proving to be one of the streamer’s latest and fruitful ventures into the medium and geek culture-at-large.
Debuting in 2022, its critically acclaimed first season — largely funded through a kickstarer campaign and produced in partnership with Amazon Studios and Titmouse — arrived in the same year as a few other epic, sprawling fantasy TV series. Most notably His Dark Materials, The Sandman, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon. After garnering an early third season renewal and just five days after the show’s Jan. 20 second season premiere, Amazon Studios announced a multiyear exclusive overall television and first-look film deal with Critical Role.

Roleplaying Games are having a moment right now. We've got a very silly and fun-looking "Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" movie on the horizon that seems to embrace all the absurdities and wild swings a typical campaign brings to basic stories of plundering and battle and then there are the folks at Critical Role who have long had a deal with Amazon that just got significantly better.
If you're not familiar with "Critical Role," it's a web series that has a fun group of people gathering together to play out multi-year "Dungeons and Dragons" campaigns.
In January of 2022, Amazon released an animated adaptation of their first big campaign "The Legend of Vox Machina" and today we found out thanks to the good folks at Variety that Amazon is all-in with "Critical Role" and will be developing a new series based on another campaign they did called, "The Mighty Nein,...

The Critical Role crew swings back into hilarious, perilous and profanity-laced fantasy action with the Season 2 debut of “The Legend of Vox Machina” on Friday, Jan. 20, on Prime Video.
As with the first season, Prime Video will release Season 2 of the Dungeons & Dragons-inspired show in three-episode weekly batches, culminating in 12 episodes total. In the new series, the Vox Machina heroes/antiheroes face off against a powerful foursome of dragons called the Chroma Conclave, which spew ice and acid, have nearly impenetrable armor and threaten to destroy the world of Exandria.
For Season 1 of “Vox Machina,” the eight principal Critical Role members (who each also serve as executive producers) needed to provide a healthy dose of exposition. That was in large part to bring viewers unfamiliar with the motley band of adventurers — based on Critical Role’s original D&d campaign, which dates back to 2015 — up to speed.

“The Legend of Vox Machina” Season 2 is putting a major emphasis on the “dragons” of Dungeons and Dragons.
The Prime Video series dropped an action-packed official trailer for Season 2, which begins rolling out on the streamer on Jan. 20. Like the first season, the follow-up will release three episodes per week, culminating in 12 episodes total.
Season 2 will follow the Chroma Conclave campaign from Critical Role’s popular Dungeons and Dragons web series. The heroes of Vox Machina will have to face a powerful group of dragons called the Chroma Conclave before they destroy the world of Exandria. And these aren’t your typical fire-breathing dragons — they spew ice and acid and have nearly impenetrable armor. To defeat these beasts, the Vox Machina heroes must find rare weapons powerful enough to kill gods. Or, as Grog the goliath suggests, they could just “fuck shit up.”

After three years in the works, Critical Role’s animated “The Legend of Vox Machina” finally lit up streaming screens on Prime Video last month — delighting fans with a raucous, foul-mouthed spree of action and adventure.
The show, based on Critical Role’s first Dungeons & Dragons campaign, is currently No. 3 on Prime Video’s Top 10 ranking in the U.S. (after action-thriller series “Reacher” and rom-com “I Want You Back”). It also has an impressive 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 93% audience score.
The first nine episodes of “Vox Machina” were released in three-episode batches over the past three weeks. The final three episodes in Season 1 drop Thursday (Feb. 17), leading into a 12-episode second season, whose premiere date is Tba.
So what’s next for the Critical Role crew? Right now, they’re in the midst of the Campaign 3 livestream, and they are in discussions with partners about a video game adaptation.

The Legend Of Vox MacHina is an animated fantasy adventure for adult viewers – especially those who groove on Dungeons and Dragons and similar forays into the realms of magical creatures with special powers clashing over their various kingdoms, planets, etc. I am not one of them, but still enjoyed the heck out the first six episodes of this new series on Amazon Prime.
A diverse little band of mercenaries who really can’t fully get along with each other, undertake quests for profit. Some of them are too bawdy for prime-time; the language is salty, and the action sequences can be pretty elaborate. There’s even a bit of nudity on the menu. If they have backstories from other media, I don’t know what it is, and fellow newbies won’t need it to dive right in. The first episode establishes the tone and defines the players quite nicely,...

On the evening of March 12, 2015, Critical Role had its first public showing. In a livestreamed event from a dimly lit studio in Burbank, eight players sat at a table immersed in a Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game for nearly three hours — their first foray in a form of storytelling that would bloom into an indie media empire, complete with an upcoming Amazon show.
Before C.R. began streaming shows on Twitch and YouTube, it started as a group of friends who knew each other from voice-over gigs in animation and video games playing D&d together. The first two sessions were at the L.A. apartment of Matthew Mercer, Critical Role’s long-standing dungeon master, and Marisha Ray, who is now the company’s creative director; they then moved to the house of Travis Willingham (now CEO) and Laura Bailey (who handles C.R.’s merchandise business). “It was an excuse to hang out together,...

We’ll take “Scandals That Could’ve Been Avoided” for $1200. Mike Richards is already out as the new host of “Jeopardy!” amid backlash over his past offensive remarks and everybody’s got jokes — and, of course, more suggestions for his replacement.
Richards informed the show’s staff that he was stepping down in an email Friday, writing that, “It has become clear that moving forward as host would be too much of a distraction for our fans and not the right move for the show.”
The behind-the-scenes saga has already distracted fans, though, with one Twitter user wondering how “Jeopardy!” of all shows came to fill the drama void left by “Game of Thrones.”
Richards will remain as executive producer and the show will return to its short-term guest hosts until a permanent one is chosen.

This Star Wars: The Bad Batch article contains spoilers.
After weeks of being on the run, after making contact with Rex and having their bio-chips removed, the Bad Batch are finally able to head back to “base” on Ord Mantell. But the respite doesn’t last very long in “Common Ground.” In fact, it’s only minutes after their arrival that they’re off again, on a new mission for Cid (Rhea Perlman), this time to save a former Separatist senator from the Empire.
To say that their new job makes the clone troopers of the Bad Batch uncomfortable is an understatement. Their rescue mission on Raxus, the former capital of the Separatist systems, is new territory for these soldiers. Mere months ago, their goal was to take down the Separatists in the name of the Republic, but their new lives as mercenaries now finds them helping one of their key leaders,...

Critical Role gave fans a first look at the character art for upcoming Amazon original animated series “The Legend of Vox Machina,” created by Emmy-winning artist, animator and designer Phil Bourassa.
Cr is producing “The Legend of Vox Machina,” based on the popular role-playing collective’s first campaign. In 2019 Amazon Prime Video ordered a total of 24 episodes across two seasons after the project broke Kickstarter records. The first season is slated to debut “soon” on Amazon Prime Video.
Bourassa’s credits include character designs for DC/Warner Bros. Animation’s “Young Justice,” “Batman: Bad Blood,” “Batman: Hush” and “Justice League” series.
Bourassa, in a video Critical Role released Wednesday about his joining the series (watch below), said he worked closely with the Cr team to create the anime-inflected character looks.
“Normally, when I’m creating a design it comes from the written word, or a comic book, or even just the writer’s script,...

Comedian Robert “Bo” Burnham’s fourth standup special “Inside” began streaming on Netflix May 30 and plenty of viewers have nothing but praise for the show.
In true coronavirus pandemic fashion, Burnham’s special was filmed and performed entirely in one room. NPR called it “isolation theater.” It’s basically an exploration of what happens inside the mind of a comic who’s forced to do standup for really no one but himself for a whole year — and the mental toll that the coronavirus has taken on all of us.
Actor Jim Beaver said he was surprised by the special: “I just watched Bo Burnham: Inside on Netflix. Brilliant, frightening, beautiful, disturbing stuff. I was expecting a pretty good comedy special. I wasn’t expecting this. This is something entirely different, something entirely new. It’s dark. Great songs. It may be genius.”

Amazon has ordered two 12-episode seasons of adult animated series Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina, based on the adventures and original characters from Critical Role, a leading story-driven and world-building digital media brand. Additionally, Amazon is building on the relationship between its live-streaming service Twitch and Critical Role, closing a first-look deal with Critical Role to develop new series to premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. Twitch has broadcast Critical Role’s successful live role-playing show since 2015.
Earlier this year, Critical Role launched The Legend of Vox Machina as a Kickstarter campaign for a 22-minute animated special produced by Titmouse, reaching their original funding goal within minutes. The campaign continued to gain traction, becoming the most-funded TV, film or animated project in Kickstarter history and raising over $11.3M, enough to fund a 10-episode season. It's been a rough time for social media, from last week's live-streamed slaughter in two Christchurch mosques to dismay over the technology's cultural and human impacts to political calls for corporate breakups and tighter regulation. But every once and awhile, stories come along that remind us of the sector's power to create unlikely stars who cobble together a huge audience out of thin air, while creating cool stuff that makes money.

The Critical Role gang has extended their Kickstarter-funded animated special from 22 minutes to 88 minutes thanks to overwhelming support from fans.
The Kickstarter, which originally asked for $750,000, has surpassed all of its stretch goals and brought in $4.5 million from 33,000 backers in a little over a day. Funding will go toward production of The Legend of Vox Machina, an adult animated prequel about the heroes of Critical Role's first Dungeons & Dragons campaign (collectively known as Vox Machina).
Critical Role is the brainchild of voice actor Matt Mercer and a number of friends and fellow voice actors. It was formerly produced by Felicia Day's Geek & Sundry, but recently split to self-produce. Mercer leads the campaign’s storylines as dungeon master, and for the Vox Machina campaign, Ashley Johnson, Marisha Ray, Taliesin Jaffe, Travis Willingham, Sam Riegel, Laura Bailey, and Liam O’Brien played the storyline's characters. The folks behind longrunning Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role are raising funds on Kickstarter to turn the series’ hit first campaign into an animated special.
The campaign, which went live this morning, had a goal of $750,000. It’s already raised $2.6 million at time of posting, with 45 days of funding to go.
Critical Role started off as an ongoing tabletop role-play campaign run by voice actor Matt Mercer and produced by Felicia Day’s Geek & Sundry. It followed a group of heroes collectively known as Vox Machina. Characters in the game were played by Mercer’s friends and fellow voice actors: Ashley Johnson, Marisha Ray, Taliesin Jaffe, Travis Willingham, Sam Riegel, Laura Bailey, and Liam O'Brien. The biggest nerd event comes back to London again for the last time this year. There is a lot to love about Comic Con and I mentioned a lot of those reasons in my first report on Comic Con in May which was my first time at Comic Con. I jumped at the chance to go again and I think I enjoyed it even more the second time around.
There are a few articles coming up about what I did and who I was talking to over that weekend so I think I’ll trying and summarize on what I did over those three days. Starting with day one, I did go to a press conference or two but it seems like that it was the quietest day of the three. I spent a lot of time at the Streamers Connected stage during that afternoon talking to growing Twitch streamers...

Van Alan's sci-fi noir series Automata has been a labor of love for the filmmaker. Based on the popular Penny Arcade web-comic characters, Automata follows private detective Sam Regal (Basil Harris from NBC's Grimm) and his automaton partner Carl Swangee (Doug Jones from Star Trek: Discovery, Hellboy) after they're hired to spy on a prominent businessman's spouse. The setting is New York City, in an alternate Prohibition America. In Van Alan's alternate reality, rather than liquor being outlawed the production of highly sentient robots, known as "automatons", becomes increasingly prohibited. It's a nifty concept. The series pilot is having its world premiere tonight, Thursday, June 29, at the 2017 Seriesfest with a second public screening on Saturday, July 1st....
