Paramount+ has announced that the two-part docuseries How Music Got Free will premiere exclusively on the service in the U.S. and Canada on Tuesday, June 11, and Wednesday, June 12, in the U.K., Australia, Latin America, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy.
Alexandria Stapleton directed the series, which premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival.
The docuseries was executive produced by Marshall “Eminem” Mathers, LeBron James, Maverick Carter, Paul Rosenberg, and Steve Stoute and produced by Warner Bros. Unscripted Television/Telepictures in association with SpringHill, Interscope Films, and Shady Films.
How Music Got Free details the fascinating and often funny inside story of the technology-driven disruption that changed music during the late 1990s and early 2000s. File-sharing technology, combined with the insatiable demand for new music, created both the means and the motive for millions of young people to participate in outright theft—and be celebrated for it.

After filling out a new questionnaire, Eminem’s most ardent stans will stand a chance to make it into the upcoming documentary, Stans. The rapper posted a link to social media on Wednesday that leads to a form to fill out in order to prove your devotion to the artist.
Here are some sample questions:
“Would you consider yourself a ‘Stan’? Why / why not?”
“Do you collect Eminem merch, make Eminem artwork, write fan fiction, etc.?”
“Have you ever been to Detroit? If so, when, why, and where did you go?...

The story everyone knows about the rise of the Mp3 and the end of the CD gold rush is a good one. It’s got Metallica and Dr. Dre, Sean Parker and the RIAA, Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, and the record industry’s flabbergasting decision to sue its own fans. But the real story, or arguably the most nuanced and fascinating one, lies elsewhere with a bunch of young computer wizzes scattered across the country and a handful of crafty, underpaid factory workers in Shelby, North Carolina.

Eminem is fittingly set to co-produce, and be the partial focus of, a new documentary about obsessive superfans, tentatively (and obviously) titled Stans.
As Variety reports, the new project was directed by Steven Leckart, and uses Eminem and “the fans that worship him” as a launching point for what’s described as a “revealing, edgy, and disarmingly personal journey into the world of superfandom.” Stans is apparently just the working title — named, of course, for Eminem and Dido’s 2000 hit “Stan” about an obsessive, delusional fan — but it’s hard...

After inadvertently coining the term “stan” on his 2000 song of the same name, Eminem is now set to co-produce Stans, a documentary about overzealous superfans.
As first reported by Variety, the new documentary will be a “revealing, edgy, and disarmingly personal journey into the world of superfandom, told through the lens of one of the world’s most iconic and enduring artists, Eminem, and the fans that worship him.” While Eminem may not be the first artist that comes to mind when thinking of overreaching fans in 2024, his chilling track “Stan” laid the groundwork for describing the type of parasocial relationship that many fanatics have with their favorite artists.
Eminem will co-produce the documentary under his Shady Films banner, with Steven Leckart serving as its director. A release date is unconfirmed, but the film is slated to come later this year. Eminem’s longtime manager, Paul Rosenberg, and Shady Films...

Eminem, whose 2000 song “Stan” coined the term for fanatical and sometimes delusional superfans, is co-producing a documentary on the phenomenon via his Shady Films, in association with Diga Studios and Hill District Media, with initial distribution from Paramount/MTV.
The film, directed by Steven Leckart, is slated for release later this year.
According to the synopsis, the film — with the working title “Stans” — is a “revealing, edgy, and disarmingly personal journey into the world of superfandom, told through the lens of one of the world’s most iconic and enduring artists, Eminem, and the fans that worship him.”
Shady Films’ Paul Rosenberg (Eminem’s longtime manager) and Stuart Parr say, “’Stans’ will be the opportunity for us to to turn the camera around and ask the audience about being fans — and in some cases, fanatics. Michigan five-piece Liquid Mike have released a riffy new single, “American Caveman,” ahead of their upcoming album, Paul Bunyan’s Slingshot.
On “American Caveman,” the group — which we named one of our artists to watch this year — juxtaposes their signature, hook-heavy sound with devastating lyricism about death, dying, and general malaise. It’s what your favorite small-town hero has been saying all along: there is no American Dream. Stream the track below.
Co-founded by Mike Maples and Monica Nelson (synth/horns/vocals), Liquid Mike also includes guitarist Dave Daignault, bassist Zack Alworden, and drummer Cody Marecek.
Paul Bunyan’s Slingshot is due out on February 2nd and marks the follow-up to Liquid Mike’s 2023 power-pop record, S/T. In a statement about the new album’s title, Maples said, “I’ve always thought it was funny how many Midwest towns claim to be the home of Paul Bunyan or have...

They were known as Fearsome Critters, and at night the lumberjacks of the Northwoods would gather around the crackling flames of their bonfire to share stories of exactly why you wouldn't want to encounter such a creature in the shadows beyond the firelight. Among these eerie animals was the Hodag, a mysterious spiked critter who roams the Wisconsin wilderness and haunts the pages of "Tall Tale Tour," one of the stories featured in Project: Cryptid #5 that marks the comic book debut of acclaimed novelist Melissa F. Olson and showcases artwork by Lane Lloyd and lettering by Rob Steen.

Eminem is taking more legal action against Robyn Dixon and Gizelle Bryant.
Earlier this year, the two Real Housewives of Potomac stars filed to trademark their podcast’s name, Reasonably Shady, which the 51-year-old rapper, whose legal name is Marshall Mathers III, quickly opposed, claiming his brand will be damaged if the podcast acquires the trademark because it could cause “confusion” with Eminem’s own brand, due to his nicknames.
Eminem has been using the “Shady” and “Slim Shady” nicknames since 1996, and owns the trademark for both to use on merch and his records.
He has now filed for a protective order against Robyn and Gizelle.

Eminem’s handlers are arguing that he’s the real Slim Shady, and all others should not be allowed to trademark the “Shady” phrase, which is closely identified with the rapper thanks to his song The Real Slim Shady.
Thus, they have requested a protective order against Real Housewives of Potomac reality stars Gizelle Bryant and Robyn Dixon, the latest volley in their ongoing dispute over the reality stars attempt at trademarking their Reasonably Shady podcast.
Eminem is asking the court not to appear for a deposition requested by the Bravo stars in the matter. He claims he has “limited knowledge of the subjects at issue.”
His attorneys offered others, including the rapper’s manager Paul Rosenberg, who would be willing to appear.
The other side insists that he show up.

Eminem Does Not Want to Sit for a Deposition In His Trademark Fight With Two ‘Real Housewives’ Stars
Eminem’s trademark dispute with Real Housewives of Potomac stars Gizelle Bryant and Robyn Dixon over their “Reasonably Shady” podcast (and other ventures) has descended into a back-and-forth over whether the rapper should have to sit for a deposition.
Earlier this month, Bryant and Dixon filed a motion trying to compel Eminem (real name Marshall Mathers) to sit for a deposition, which the rapper promptly rebuffed in a Dec. 15 filing (first reported by AllHipHop). Mathers’ lawyer also sought to secure a protective order “precluding the deposition” of the rapper.

Bestselling author Lee Child's "Jack Reacher" book series focuses on a protagonist who never, ever fails. The titular Reacher is a one-man unit, untraceable and unkillable, who moves efficiently from one place to another like a phantom and bests the bad guys by the end of every case. However, Reacher's humanity is an essential aspect of his character — his deliberate isolation is a double-edged sword, a cross he has to bear for the sake of being the best at what he does. Prime Video's "Reacher," with its second season now underway, perfectly balances this aspect of Reacher's personality, with Alan Ritchson bringing the beloved hero to life in all his dynamic, idiosyncratic glory as he moves on from Margrave and solves a fresh mystery in the upcoming season.

"Reacher" is one of the best action shows streaming or airing anywhere, and Alan Ritchson was born to lead it.
Ritchson perfectly embodies the hulking, often sardonic, always stoic boots of Jack Reacher, the former military police officer who now wanders the United States as a vagabond who only stops to enact bloody violence on the unjust and the corrupt. Author Lee Child created a character of mythological proportions -- a vengeful, righteous piece of modern American folklore come to life -- and it's increasingly impossible to imagine another actor in the role. Ritchson's physicality is key, but so is the innate intelligence that powers that physicality (he always finds the correct evidence to lead to the proper heads to stomp). It's one of hell of a performance in one hell of show.

You no longer have to venture to Detroit to get the taste of mom’s spaghetti. Mom’s Spaghetti, the pasta restaurant inspired by the timeless Eminem lyric, will now be selling jars of its “Mom’s Spaghetti Pasta Sauce” online, available for nationwide shipping.
Eminem opened the brick-and-mortar Mom’s Spaghetti diner in 2021 after a handful of successful pop-ups (he also donated cups of the stuff to Michigan heathcare workers during the height of the pandemic). Rhys Frake-Waterfield's new horror film "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey" takes the toddler-like characters from A.A. Milne's beloved 1926 children's novel, and transforms them into lumbering, human-hating, bloodthirsty serial killers. If you ever wanted to see Christopher Robin's little yellow Pooh bear as Leatherface from "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," then "Blood and Honey" is for you.
The central gag of Frake-Waterfield's film is, of course, the juxtaposition of Milne's childlike innocence with the violent crassness of your average slasher movie. One might ostensibly get a certain lascivious thrill from seeing well-known childhood imagery blended with adult material. A similar approach was used in Danishka Esterhazy's 2019 film "The Banana Splits Movie" which saw the stars of the 1968 children's TV show turned into murderous robots, as well as any number of horror fairy tales.

Eminem joined his manager Paul Rosenberg on his podcast “Paul Pod” to discuss how the rapper came back from an accidental overdose of methadone in 2007. The interview is part of a seven-episode limited podcast series that launched in August to celebrate the rapper and the release of his recent greatest hits album, Curtain Call 2.
“I remember when I first got sober and all the shit was out of my system, I remember just being, like, really happy and everything was fucking new to me again,” Eminem told Rosenberg, reflecting on making Relapse two years later.

Eminem has admitted that his loved ones were concerned he might have permanent brain damage after he suffered a drug overdose
The rapper – real name Marshall Mathers – has previously struggled with addiction to prescription painkillers and in 2007 took a near-fatal overdose of methadone that left him in hospital.
Appearing on his manager Paul Rosenberg’s podcast Paul Pod: Curtain Call 2 on Wednesday (7 September), Eminem said that “it took a long time for my brain to start working again” after the incident.
Rosenberg explained: “You literally were coming off of an overdose, and they had to sort of stabilise you with a few medications. And some of them took you a minute to adjust to – let’s just leave it at that. So, you’re learning how to rap again almost literally, right?”

Eminem just added another award to his already vast trophy case. The Detroit rapper (along with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, 50 Cent, and Mary J. The star-studded 14-minute set won an award for Outstanding Variety Special during the two-day awards showcase.

Self-portraits are respected, if not encouraged in virtually all artforms. Except cinema. There, when a director turns camera on themselves, it can seem indulgent, if not downright gratuitous. It’s a tricky line to walk, sharing without showing off, revealing insights no one else could while maintaining enough distance for audiences to relate. When it goes right, audiences get something seismic, ground-breaking like “Exit Through the Gift Shop,” the Banksy bombshell dismantling of his own mystique. “La Originals” is the opposite, a feature-length sizzle reel in service of its makers’ still semi-underground reputation.

Eminem rarely does interviews, and a conversation about last night’s surprise performance of “Lose Yourself” at the Academy Awards — some 17 years after the song won him an Oscar — would seem rarer still. The performance in many ways was a belated do-over: He’d decided not to attend the ceremony in 2003, leaving his collaborator Luis Resto to accept the award — from Barbra Streisand, no less — in his place.
Last night’s appearance — which immediately followed a montage celebrating the sound editing/mixing award, which wound down with footage from “8 Mile” — got a rapturous reaction from many screen stars in the crowd. Some of the relatively younger ones were seen singing along, and everyone from Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio to Billie Eilish and Anthony Ramos standing and applauding at the end.

It’s Grammy week in Los Angeles and Justin Bieber is choking back tears in front of 100 people while he thanks manager Scooter Braun for standing by him through his darkest moments. The private event found journalists, record-label employees, and other industry members gathered at Village Studios to hear Bieber’s upcoming album, surrendering their phones to Yondr pouches and eating miniburgers and fish tacos in a giant room upstairs. Before the playback properly began, a parade of Bieber’s past hits, like “Boyfriend,” “Despacito (Remix),” and “Where Are Ü Now,...

New Jersey saw its first MTV Video Music Awards this year, and the state repped hard with the cast of “The Sopranos” taking the stage and The Jonas Brothers performing off-site at legendary Asbury Park venue The Stone Pony. Fans celebrated the legacy of Missy Elliott as she was awarded with this year’s Video Vanguard Award, late-addition Miley Cyrus performed her single “Slide Away” and Lizzo brought down the house with renditions of “Truth Hurts” and “Good as Hell” in front of a giant inflatable derriere. But there’s much more that happened behind-the-scenes and far out of cameras’ reach at Newark’s Prudential Center on Aug. 26.

It was either, depending on how you looked at it, a great blessing or a growing problem: Def Jam had way too many rappers on its hands. In a single year, the record label had gone on a mad signing spree for one young act after another, prompted by streaming’s growing revenue and the public’s hypothetically untapped appetite for hip-hop. At the end of 2018, Def Jam had around two dozen fresh faces on its roster — from artists with burgeoning loyalty clubs to brash 17-year-olds newly plucked from SoundCloud...

Variety is en route to experience Kanye West’s last-minute album listening party in the Rocky Mountains with live updates as we reach peak Kanye.
West had the idea last Friday to fly a planeload of media, radio, DJs, and other influencers to Wyoming to hear his new album — yes, the Friday before Memorial Day weekend.
Def Jam staffers leaped into action and spent much of the weekend mobilizing and organizing people from both coasts as well as Europe, Australia, and Asia to fly out; originally, the idea was to fly out 300 people to West’s country retreat, but that number was quickly cut in half.
On Tuesday, West’s publicist called a few potential travelers to see if they were interested, but official emailed invites didn’t arrive until Wednesday morning — just 24 hours before wheels up.

Kanye West’s Twitter binge continued unabated through Sunday, as he added albums he’s produced from Teyana Taylor, Pusha T and Nas to a schedule that already included albums from himself and a collaboration with Kid Cudi — all of which will somehow be released in May and June, he says. West was known or reported to be working with many of these artists in recent months, and although he’s worked with Nas multiple times in the past 15-odd years — most recently both guested on French Montana’s “Figure It Out,” and West contributed music to Nas’ 2016 film “The Land” — but a new album was news.
“I’m hand-produced all the albums I tweeted about. Been chopping samples from the sunken place,” he wrote, referencing a hypnotic state from the film “Get Out.” He then sent several tweets about how much he loves driving a Tesla car.

In the middle of a long series of Tweets that will make up a philosophy “book” that Kanye West announced that he’s writing on Twitter, the Mc casually mentioned on Thursday that he’s dropping not one, but two new albums next month.

The Mc has kept a relatively low profile since cancelling the last 21 dates of the 2016 tour in support of his “Life of Pablo” album after he was hospitalized in Los Angeles for psychiatric evaluation.
