This post contains spoilers for the finale of "Justified: City Primeval."
When "Justified: City Primeval" signed off last night, the limited series finale was expected to be the final word on Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant). After all, fans of the straight-shooting, contemplative modern cowboy got six seasons with the character, plus a surprise bonus in the form of the revival series -- an adaptation of an Elmore Leonard story that didn't originally feature Raylan. And isn't that enough? Wouldn't it be greedy for us to ask for more time in this stylish, thrilling world?
Not according to the show itself. In an exhilarating surprise epilogue, "Justified: City Primeval" ended with a fantastic cliffhanger, bringing crime kingpin (and Raylan's ex-friend) Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) back into the fray in typical over-the-top fashion and putting an immediate question mark on the end of Raylan's early retirement. The final scene,...

John Wick isn’t the only character willing to go on a killing spree after someone takes his dog off the board. In Rlje Films’s Muzzle trailer, Jake Rosser (Aaron Eckhart) is an elite agent grieving the loss of his partner. While all dogs go to heaven, Rosser is ready to travel to hell and back to honor his dog’s memory and take a bite out of crime.
In Muzzle, “LAPD K-9 officer Jake Rosser (Aaron Eckhart) and his K-9 partner Ace battle it out on the streets of LA when they get into a shootout with local drug dealers, and Ace is shot dead,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “In a moment of crisis, Jake tries to get an Emt to look at Ace and assaults him when he refuses, resulting in him taking leave from the force. Fans of the FX series Justified were fortunate enough to get six prodigious seasons of one of the best neo-Westerns ever put on television from 2010-2015. The show’s critical success was in no small part due to the stellar supporting cast throughout its run. Fans not only gravitated towards Timothy Olyphant’s Kentucky-fried charm as the no-nonsense Raylan Givens, but found a connection with the men and women Raylan worked with, the women he loved, and the larger-than-life outlaws he came across.
It will surprise many to hear that Justified: City Primeval barely even mentions Kentucky, or the characters that were a part of Raylan’s life for those six years. Kentucky is far behind Raylan, and that includes his long term fraternal-nemesis, Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) who isn’t a part of this limited series. There is no mention of Art (Nick Searcy), Tim (Jacob Pitts) or Rachel...

Whether it’s Hollywood’s inability to spawn new blockbuster icons or the entertainment industry’s commitment to placating an audience with an insatiable desire for nostalgia, the summer of 2023 has taken on a distinct Twilight-of-the-Action-Gods feeling.
The season started with Arnold Schwarzenegger doing the streaming equivalent of a ’90s Arnold Schwarzenegger classic, now with meditations on fatherhood and approaching retirement, in Netflix’s Fubar. Then Harrison Ford added meditations on godfatherhood and approaching retirement in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The only reason Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One isn’t about fatherhood and approaching retirement is a fear that if Tom Cruise were ever to actually confront, or even address, his own aging, the metaphorical dream factory would implode.
Into this fray of graying tough guy icons strides Timothy Olyphant’s Raylan Givens. For 78 episodes on FX’s Justified, Raylan Givens was a throwback personification of anger-fueled masculinity,...

Plot: Having left the hollers of Kentucky 15 years ago, Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) now lives in Miami, a walking anachronism balancing his life as a U.S. Marshal and part-time father of a 15-year-old girl. His hair is grayer, his hat is dirtier, and the road in front of him is suddenly a lot shorter than the road behind. A chance encounter on a desolate Florida highway sends him to Detroit. There he crosses paths with Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), aka The Oklahoma Wildman, a violent, sociopathic desperado who’s already slipped through the fingers of Detroit’s finest once and aims to do so again.

Having been off the air for about eight years now, the neo-noir world of "Justified" is coming back to television with "Justified: City Primeval," a miniseries based on Elmore Leonard's 1980 novel. The Emmy Award-winning original series, which ran for over six seasons, starred Timothy Olyphant as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, and featured a supporting cast including Joelle Carter, Nick Searcy, Jacob Pitts, Erica Tazel, and Walton Goggins.
"City Primeval" takes place many years after the 2015 series finale, with Raylan having left his life in Kentucky for Miami, where he's committed to raising his teenage daughter, Willa (now played by Vivian Olyphant), while trying to juggle his Marshal duties. But an incident on a Florida highway prompts a trip to Detroit, where he faces a new challenge in the deadly Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), also known as "The Oklahoma Wildman." Although Holbrook appears to be propped up as the central antagonist,...

Incredible as it may seem, this is Nicolas Cage’s first western, although he clearly enjoyed shooting it, because he’s already done another one (Butcher’s Crossing). Essentially a knock-off version of True Grit, The Old Way isn’t especially overwhelming in terms of plot and direction, but it’s eminently watchable all the same, thanks to strong onscreen chemistry between Cage and young co-star Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
The film begins with a prologue sequence, in which grizzled gun-for-hire Colton Briggs shoots and kills almost everyone during an attempted hanging, including the man he was supposed to be rescuing in the first place. Twenty years later, Briggs (now sadly sans moustache) has hung up his guns in favour of raising his young...

The Old Way is a Western directed by Brett Donowho, written by Carl W. Lucas starring Nicolas Cage.
Yes, Nicolas Cage will (probably) work with no breaks this year and already has premieres ahead such as Renfield (in which he will be Dracula with his usual mayhem). Meanwhile, we can see him here in a Western which although it might not go down in the History of Film, is decent enough as far as production and ambience.
And, also has an incomparable philosophical subject: Nicolas Cage wears a Stetson!
About the Movie The Old Way
A story about vengeance, shooting and… Nicolas Cage, who is still the absolute star of the B Series with the personality that he has after that Oscar (for Leaving Las Vegas), which more than one academic must regret having given to him. "Tell me the names of the men who did this." Saban Films + Lionsgate have revealed the official trailer for The Old Way, a western action thriller from a filmmaker named Brett Donowho (that can't be his real last name?). The marketing describes this as Nicolas Cage's first ever Western, which might just be true? Why not. An old gunslinger and his daughter must face the consequences of his past, when the son of a man he murdered years ago arrives to take his revenge. Another typical Western story involving a man with a past who must fight off those who came after him when they find him. Sounds like so many other films. Starring Nicolas Cage and Ryan Kiera Armstrong, with Noah Le Gros, Clint Howard, Kerry Knuppe, plus Nick Searcy & Shiloh Fernandez. This doesn't look so bad, doesn't look so good either. At least Cage has a glorious mustache!

Kirstie Alley defended herself today from blowback on a prior tweet, wherein she called out Hollywood for refusing to work with President Donald Trump supporters.
Alley’s initial tweet was in response to the attempt by Will & Grace stars Debra Messing and Eric McCormack to get momentum behind compiling a list of attendees for a mid-September fundraiser for Donald Trump. The tweets by them were seen as a prelude to doxing and/or blacklisting anyone attending, a move some saw as akin to the tactics of former Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy’s hearings of the 1950s, wherein various members of Hollywood were investigated for Communist ties and subsequently blacklisted.
Alley on Friday tweeted, “I refuse to be part of the Hollywood asshats who can’t see that “Not working with Republicans” is as stupid and Nasty as “Refusing to do business with gay people”..Stop Acting above the Fray ya damn hypocrites…...

Madrid — Madrid’s Latido Films, one of the Spanish-speaking world’s top sales companies for arthouse and crossover films, acquired world sales rights to Dominican director José María Cabral’s in progress “Hotel Coppelia.”
The news comes as Latido has revealed a slew of sales on top titles. Their number suggests a larger depth to this year’s Cannes Film Market, allowing the company to push out two dozen or more deals in largely major territories.
“The Realm,” the latest feature from Oscar nominated Rodrigo Sorogoyen (“The Mother”) and Spanish Academy Award submission “Champions” lead many of the sales with “The Realm” going to Somos in the U.S., Impacto in Argentina, Vision in China, A-z Films in Canada and Cineplex in Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia.
Cabral’s “Hotel Coppelia” is based on the true stories of five women who, during the 1965 Dominican Civil War, made tremendous personal sacrifice to protect their own liberties.

Two years ago Nat Geo broke onto the Emmy scene in a big way with “Genius,” which earned 10 nominations including Best Limited Series, Best Directing for Ron Howard and Best Actor for Geoffrey Rush as Albert Einstein. Last year, the highly anticipated sequel “Genius: Picasso” scored seven bids, including Best Limited Series and Best Actor for Antonio Banderas as Pablo Picasso, and won for Best Sound Mixing and Best Cinematography. “The Hot Zone,” a new limited series that played at the Tribeca Film Festival April 30 ahead of its debut on National Geographic May 27, begins with a graphic burst of effluvium. A boil-covered air passenger flying over central Africa discharges vomit; later, in the hospital, he practically explodes blood onto a doctor, who very slowly blinks, as if in disbelief that a person could contain so much foul fluid.
These early sequences fulfill several purposes. For one thing, they warn off potential viewers with weak stomachs, and signal to those sticking around exactly what this story will entail. More crucially, they indicate quite how serious are the stakes of this series, about the fight against the Ebola virus after a stateside outbreak in 1989. Death is nothing new on television. But the grotesque hemorrhaging Ebola induces in its unlucky sufferers brings home the gravity of the story, and the courage of its players.

The Best of Enemies is directed by Robin Bissell and follows the intense relationship between Ku Klux Klan president C.P. Ellis and Black Rights activist Ann Atwater played by Academy Award Winner Sam Rockwell and Taraji P. Henson, respectively. Bissell’s film doesn’t necessarily tread new ground in this now saturated genre, albeit much-needed conversation of cultural acceptance. However, The Best of Enemies is a gripping and deeply astonishingly poignant tale that showcases a truly outstanding performance from Taraji P. Henson, who is an absolute powerhouse and steals the entire show with a phenomenal in both a visual and verbal performance.

An executive producer on Free State of Jones and The Hunger Games, Robin Bissell doesn’t appear to be the usual Park City suspect, but there are always a debut title … or two, that are larger in scope, and from those not wet behind the ears. The Best of Enemies fits that bill. The project dates back to June of 2015, when Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell were attached and would only begin filming two years later in Georgia. Stx Entertainment liked what they saw and last month they released the first trailer. Anne Heche, Wes Bentley, Bruce McGill, John Gallagher Jr., and Nick Searcy make up the supporting cast.…...

Overnight he becomes the underdog champion of the world with a title fight on the horizon, but when the female reporter covering the story is found dead, Ty becomes the murder suspect. A blackout, a dead body, and incriminating circumstances put him in the middle of a mystery.

Nick Searcy’s “Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer” doesn’t so much play like a movie as it does an oversized episode of “Law & Order.” The events have been ripped from horrifying headlines. The first half is all about catching a killer. The second half is about prosecuting him. And when its done, you can’t help but feel you didn’t get the whole story.
Unlike “Law & Order,” Searcy’s film isn’t just inspired by reality. “Gosnell” tells the story of Kermit Gosnell, a doctor who ran a Pennsylvania abortion clinic which, for many years, operated in unsafe, unclean and unprofessional conditions. His staff was untrained. His methods were monstrous. Gosnell was directly responsible for the death of at least one patient, and gave illegal, late-term “abortions” by killing living infants outside of the womb.
It’s hard to calculate the atrocities Gosnell committed,...

A trailer has been released for a new film called The Best of Enemies, which is based on the true story of the unlikely relationship between Ann Atwater (Taraji P. Henson), an outspoken civil rights activist, and C.P. Ellis (Sam Rockwell), a local Ku Klux Klan leader who reluctantly co-chaired a community summit, battling over the desegregation of schools in Durham, North Carolina during the racially-charged summer of 1971.
This looks like a great film that tells an incredible and power story. I’m also a big fan of Sam Rockwell and Taraji P. Henson and it’s good to see them take on great roles like this. Here’s the synopsis:
C. P. Ellis grew up in the poor white section of Durham, North Carolina, and as a young man joined the Ku Klux Klan. Ann Atwater, a single mother from the poor black part of town, quit her job...

"They say you represent a great many people in this town..." Stx has debuted the first trailer for a drama titled The Best of Enemies, marking the feature directorial debut of producer Robin Bissell. Not to be confused with the excellent documentary also titled The Best of Enemies about Gore vs Vidal, this film is about two other different friends from America's history. The film tells the story of a rivalry, and friendship, between the local Ku Klux Klan leader in Durham, North Carolina played by Sam Rockwell, and a civil rights activist named Ann Atwater, played by Taraji P. Henson. The full cast includes Wes Bentley, Anne Heche, Sope Aluko, John Gallagher Jr., Nick Searcy, and Caitlin Mehner. This looks much better than expected, some fire & passion in these folks and I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out. “Sometimes there are necessary evils for the greater good.” That inherently creepy comment fairly describes one side’s stance on race relations in The Best of Enemies, a timely drama starring Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell. Check out the first trailer above and the poster below.

They battle over the desegregation of schools in Durham, Nc, during the racially charged summer of 1971. The improbable bond they forge would change their lives forever.

Miracle of miracles — last year’s Best Picture Oscar winner went to a genuine monster movie! Guillermo del Toro’s overachieving Gill Man spectacle features a gratifyingly anti-authoritarian attitude. Michael Stuhlbarg may not have received an Oscar nomination Tuesday, but he did join a very exclusive club: He’s the sixth performer to appear in three Best Picture nominees in the same year and the first to do so in 15 years.
Stuhlbarg had supporting roles in “Call Me by Your Name,” “The Post” and “The Shape of Water” — a third of the nine-nominee Best Picture lineup. The last person to accomplish this feat was John C. Reilly for his 2002 slate of “Chicago,” “Gangs of New York” and “The Hours.” Before Reilly, you have to go all the way back to the ‘30s for the first four instances. They are:

1935: Charles Laughton, “Mutiny on the Bounty,” “Les Miserables” and “Ruggles of Red Gap”

Here’s the new international trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s next film, The Shape of Water, which looks remarkably like a cross between Hellboy’s Abe Sapien and The Creature From the Black Lagoon (a film incidentally del Toro expressed an interest in remaking). The Shape of Water stars Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg, Octavia Spencer, Nick Searcy and Doug Jones.
From master storyteller, Guillermo del Toro, comes The Shape of Water – an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1963. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment.
The Shape of Water is released in cinemas across the UK on February 14th 2018.

For some filmmakers, it always seems like just a matter of time until they create something that Academy voters fall head over heels in love with. Guillermo del Toro is certainly someone in that category. Even though Pan’s Labyrinth had been nominated for Oscars, del Toro seemed to still have a big player in him. Well, opening this week, we have it in The Shape of Water. Not just his most awards friendly movie to date, it’s likely going to be cited by many as among the best films of the year. As such, it’s most certainly a contender to reckon with. The film is a fantasy drama/romance, essentially a hybrid tale as only del Toro could tell it. In fact, I’ll let IMDb describe it, since their description is pretty spot on: “An other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era...

Frances McDormand gives her best performance since Fargo over two decades ago in Three Billboards Outside Ebbibg, Missouri which, despite its cumbersome title, is one of the best films of 2017. She plays Mildred Hayes, a middle-aged divorcee who, out of grief and frustration, rents three dilapidated billboards outside the sleepy burg of Ebbing, Missouri (look it up – it’s one town over from Blaine) and has them decked with incriminating messages; “Raped While Dying”,“And Still No Arrests”, and “How Come, Chief Willoughby?” Mildred is basically declaring war on Ebbing’s Police Chief, William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson), but the locals are incensed at her, mostly because the Chief is not only widely beloved, but he’s also dying of pancreatic cancer. Mildred doesn’t care what her neighbors think or of Willoughby’s fine character and impending death. She’s just angry because several months have passed and not enough...

The trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s next film, which is set for a December release, The Shape of Water, which looks remarkably like a cross between Hellboy’s Abe Sapien and The Creature From the Black Lagoon (a film incidentally del Toro expressed an interest in remaking). The film stars Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg, Octavia Spencer, Nick Searcy and Doug Jones.
The Shape of Water is set for release on December 8th.
