Andrea Mitchell, one of the longest-running presences on MSNBC, will give up the reins to her daily noontime show at the NBCUniversal-backed cable-news outlet following the presidential inauguration in 2025, she informed viewers Tuesday at the end of her program.
The veteran journalist is expected to retain her roles as NBC News’ chief Washington correspondent and chief foreign affairs correspondent, and will take up a broader assignment within NBCU’s news operations, reporting for both NBC News and MSNBC. Mitchell, who is expected to turn 78 on Wednesday, has anchored a weekday program on MSNBC since 2008, and has been with NBC News for 45 years, covering every presidential campaign for the outlet since 1980.

CBS wants to get back in the battle for evening-news viewers with a new take on the format that looks very little like the evening news viewers have come to know.
The network plans to rebuild its long-running “CBS Evening News,” retooling anchors, format and segments in a bid to make the half-hour once led by Walter Cronkite more valuable for modern news viewers who don’t recognize the show as the cultural touchstone it was in the 1960s and 70s.
After the 2024 election, with current anchor Norah O’Donnell stepping away for a new senior correspondent role at CBS News, executives at the Paramount Global news operation will put the show under the aegis of Bill Owens, the executive producer of “60 Minutes.” Working with a new on-air team that includes co-anchors John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois, chief weathercaster Lonnie Quinn and Washington-based “Face The Nation” moderator Margaret Brennan,...

Norah O’Donnell will cede the reins of the venerable “CBS Evening News” after the 2024 presidential election in favor of a new role as a senior correspondent who will seek out big interviews and opportunities for deeper reporting, the latest major change at CBS News after its business was merged with that of the local-tv operations of parent company Paramount Global.
O’Donnell, who recently celebrated her fifth year in the anchor chair, sees an opportunity to pursue signature interviews with top newsmakers — something that proved appealing to her after logging stints as both a morning-show co-anchor and an evening-news presence and after her recent sit-down with Pope Francis earlier this year.
“Together, our team has won Emmy, Murrow, and DuPont awards. We managed to anchor in-studio through Covid; we took the broadcast on the road from aircraft carriers to the Middle East, and around the world. We were privileged to conduct...

Harry Smith is moving on. After 12 years at NBC News, veteran correspondent Smith is leaving the network and will begin teaching at his alma mater this fall.
Smith received an emotional farewell send-off Friday from Today show anchors Hoda Kotb, Craig Melvin, Sheinelle Jones, Al Roker and Savannah Guthrie. The show played A Look Back video of his work over the years after which he received a standing ovation from his Today show colleagues.
Smith narrated the five-minute video, concluding by saying: “And it all seems like it happened yesterday.”
“I have nothing but gratitude,” Smith said. “Every time I would always come on this show, I was always welcomed so generously. I’ve had just this unbelievable array of phenomenal experiences since coming to NBC, and so I’m really full of nothing but gratitude. Every time I’ve come on, everyone would drop their phones, pay attention to the story and then respond.

Harry Smith is signing off from NBC News after 12 years. The beloved correspondent received an emotional sendoff during Friday’s Today show, where his colleagues got choked up sharing kind words about their time together.
“Harry has brought us some remarkable stories, finding people and places that stay with us forever, writing stories with such elegance and beauty that, frankly, no one can match,” Savannah Guthrie said. “And, of course, delivering them in that unforgettable voice. The Whitney Museum of American Art has announced that it will exhibit Pioneering Experimental Filmmaker Harry Smith, the first solo exhibition of artist, filmmaker, collector, and groundbreaking musicologist whose compendium of song recordings, the Anthology of American Folk Music, laid the groundwork for the popularization of folk music in the 1960s.
During his 50-year career, Smith made renegade and innovative use of the changing recording and distribution technologies, from his voracious approach to record collecting to experiments with early tape-recording systems to groundbreaking manipulations of abstraction and collage in film. Smith was an innovator in collecting, organizing, and sequencing images and artifacts that structure the ways we understand and share culture and experiences today. “Dateline NBC” correspondent Harry Smith went to an area so secluded that he was forced to literally freeze his clothes before stepping foot on the Palmyra Atoll so he could tell the island’s story without corrupting it. “They asked us to buy some new clothes and then to freeze them for at least 48 hours,” Smith told TheWrap. “They are so concerned about bringing invasive species in that they wanted to make sure we didn’t bring anything along with us.” “On Assignment” is a special series from “Dateline NBC,” and this week’s edition features Smith bringing TV cameras to the remote wildlife refuge.

NBC canceled its primetime newsmagazine "Rock Center with Brian Williams" on Friday. The New York Times was first to report that the program had been canceled and would broadcast its final show on June 21, less than two years after its November 2011 debut.
"Rock Center," which was a project launched under former NBC News president Steve Capus, struggled to find a steady audience, due in part to multiple scheduling changes. When it first premiered, the show aired on Monday nights. It was quickly moved to Wednesday nights, then to Thursday nights, and most recently to Friday at 10:00 p.m., where it has been since November 2012.
The hourlong program boasted a correspondent roster that featured some of news business' biggest stars, including Ted Koppel, Meredith Vieira, Natalie Morales, Kate Snow and Harry Smith. Chelsea Clinton also served as a "Rock Center" correspondent, and most recently interviewed the Geico Gecko.

NBC didn't spill any secrets about the unnamed hourlong prime time news program that Brian Williams is developing when it announced today that former CBS News anchor Harry Smith will join the team as "one of the correspondents." NBC's praise must be refreshing for Smith to hear. In January, CBS pared back his role at The Early Show. After 24 years at CBS News, Harry Smith is saying goodbye to the network.
According to TV Guide, Smith is heading to rival broadcaster NBC to launch a new primetime newsmagazine with 'NBC Nightly News' anchor Brian Williams.
Smith began working at CBS in 1987, and most recently co-anchored 'The Early Show' and 'CBS This Morning.' He has also contributed to 'CBS Evening News' as a senior correspondent and substitute anchor.
In December, after CBS announced the changes to 'The Early Show' lineup, executive producer David Friedman said 'Early Show' newsreader Smith would "shift his focus to hard news with an expanded role as primary substitute anchor on 'The Evening News with Katie Couric,' 'Face the Nation' and 'Sunday Morning' while continuing to report major stories for all CBS News broadcasts."

The network, which is shaking up its management, has asked anchor Katie Couric to stay on through the 2012 elections-for significantly less money than her original $15 million deal, a source tells Howard Kurtz.

While negotiations have not yet started and a deal might fail to materialize, this is the first concrete indication that Les Moonves, the company's chief executive, has made a decision on extending her deal.

It was Day One of the new Early Show this morning on CBS. Gone were Harry Smith, Maggie Rodriguez, and Dave Price. In their seats were Chris Wragge, Erica Hill, and Marysol Castro. When the decision to revamp the third-place morning show was announced in November, some folks were none too pleased: Wragge was too handsome, said many critics, and his hard-news bonafides — he logged time on Entertainment Tonight — weren’t up to Smith-ian levels. Many loyal and disappointed fans of the previous team vowed not to watch the program. But the new gang seemed poised and professional this morning,...

My first reaction to seeing a man jump the fence at The Early Show Plaza this morning and yell “C.I. Joe, Coney Island in the house!” with his arm around a very surprised Harry Smith was jealousy. You know I love Harry Smith. My second thought was wondering if Today has better security for what I assume is its larger outdoor audience. I never thought how vulnerable those morning show hosts are before. My final thought: If I was a producer of a morning show, I would do a week-long Halloween stunt in which each day, someone, at some point,...

On CBS this morning, a "nutty" fan of The Early Show hopped the fence to get as close as possible to host Harry Smith and substitute host Rebecca Jarvis. The unidentified man yelled a few inaudible things, but concluded with "in the house." Although he wasn't in the house for long as security immediately yanked the Smith admirer off camera.

"Early Show" weatherman Dave Price announced Friday that he was leaving the show and CBS effective immediately, more than two weeks before his scheduled replacement along with anchors Harry Smith and Maggie Rodriguez. "Today is my last day at CBS News,” Price said. “I’ve had my dream job at 'The Early Show' for eight years and deeply appreciate the outpouring of affection from so many viewers and colleagues. While sorry to leave, I’m eager and very excited about the next phase of my career.” Price joined the show in 2003. CBS announced...

Yesterday we heard that anchors Harry Smith and Maggie Rodriguez, plus meteorologist Dave Price, had been axed from 'The Early Show' in a major reshuffle of CBS News on-air talent.
Now, executive producer David Friedman has been explaining the reasons behind the sweeping -- and, to many, unexpected -- changes. He told The Hollywood Reporter that although the shakeup came after a lot of careful consideration, "it feels sudden because there are multiple people and it feels like a big deal."
The change of hosts has allegedly been a topic of discussion at CBS News for some time, according to sources, and it reinforces the critical importance of chemistry in morning television. Announcing the new anchors -- Erica Hill and Chris Wragge -- CBS News President Sean McManus said "This new team brings vibrancy, intelligence and warmth that I think America will grow to love.

Did you hear about the earthquake over at The Early Show? CBS News announced a major shakeup at its signature morning news-and-chat program today, including the replacement of cohosts Harry Smith and Maggie Rodriguez with Chris Wragge and Erica Hill, who were previously the weekend team. Does the network think this is the move that will finally push The Early Show ahead of Today and Good Morning America in the ratings? "These shows are about the team," executive producer David Freidman, himself installed only 11 months ago, told the Hollywood Reporter. "It's about finding the right team." "Obviously if things were quote unquote 'working' we wouldn't make...

Erica Hill's star is rising fast at CBS. In an overhaul of the anchor team at The Early Show, which has been trailing the morning program competition, co-anchors Harry Smith and Maggie Rodriguez and weather anchor Dave Price are out. Hill, who joined The Early Show 10 months ago as news anchor of the weekday program and co-anchor of the weekend edition with Chris Wragge, will now co-anchor the weekday Early Show along with Wragge. Marysol Castro, formerly of ABC's Good Morning America weekend edition, has been tapped as the new weather anchor, while Jeff Glor will serve as news anchor. The changes will go in effect on Jan. 3. "The Early Show is an important element of CBS News," CBS News and Sports president McManus said. Our deepest condolences go out to fans of of CBS' "The Early Show," because the morning news broadcast is getting a face-lift. Co-anchors Harry Smith and Maggie Rodriguez and weather forecaster Dave Price are out. So who are their replacements?
CBS is keeping it in the family, promoting Chris Wragge and Erica Hill from the Saturday "Early Show." Hill, who's the current news reader for the weekday show, will relinquish those duties to Jeff Glor, Saturday's "CBS Evening News" anchor and a reporter from "The Early Show." Finally, Marysol Castro, formerly of ABC's "Good Morning America" weekend edition, will take over weather.
"Erica, Chris, Marysol and Jeff are four accomplished broadcasters who already have proven track records and loyal followings," "Early Show" executive producer David Friedman says. "This group is the perfect combination of intelligence and personality for morning television."
"The Early Show" has been a perpetual third-place finisher in the network morning-show ratings,...

Michael Jackson is gone, but clearly not forgotten. Family, friends, and fans are still reeling from the untimely death of the pop superstar one year ago. Friday marks the one year anniversary of Michael Jackson's death, and people from all over the globe are planning a day of remembrance. Several celebrities are among them, many of whom issued statements this week about Jackson. "Music wouldn't be what it is without someone like Michael Jackson," said Christina Aguilera to Us Magazine. "I remember going to my high school talent show singing 'The Way You Make Me Feel,' and being a huge fan of his album Bad. I know all of my dancers wouldn't be behind me dancing if it weren't for that." Aguilera will be participating in a special one hour long Jackson tribute courtesy of The Early Show (TV) on Friday morning called The King of Pop: One Year Later.

Tomorrow, June 25, marks the anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death. In addition to the mass moonwalks that undoubtedly will pop up all over the globe, TV networks are scrambling to provide coverage for still-grieving fans of the fallen King of Pop. Aside from the reverent tribute specials — including the Bet Awards, which will honor Jackson this Sunday — there will be video countdowns, tours of Neverland Ranch, and documentaries on the Jackson family. For those still interested in the tabloid-fodder side of Mj’s life, never fear: Specials on his entourage, children, and several docs on the conspiracy theories surrounding his death are also airing.

One of the topics she discusses is the controversial Newsweek article that claims openly gay actors can’t play straight roles. Well, Cynthia is gay and her Satc character of Miranda Hobbes is most certainly straight. Yet somehow, she manages to pull it off.

Will lightning strike on NCIS?
Michael Weatherly has made the morning talk show circuits in New York. He appeared on The Early Show and Live With Regis and Kelly. He also sat down with Entertainment Weekly to talk about his contract and the fate of one of the characters.
On The Early Show Michael sported a bit of scruff, which wasn't bad looking at all. Dressed in a suit and looking very Dinozzo he told Harry Smith season eight was like a dream. The show has become more popular each season. He was afraid he'll wake up and they would be filming season two.
