When Ben DeBacker (Corey Fogelmanis), the nonbinary protagonist of Tommy Dorfman’s charming directorial debut I Wish You All the Best, decides to come out to their parents, the results are disastrous.
The conversation is rendered in flashes, adding a suspenseful layer to the melancholic moment. We see Ben reviewing notes on an index card; we watch them shuffle nervously to the kitchen. Before we know it, Ben is calling his estranged sister Hannah (Alexandra Daddario) for help. The North Carolina teen is crouched in a corner of a gas station grocery store with no shoes and holes in their socks. It’s only when Hannah shows up — worried and out of breath — that the gravity of the situation sets in.

As the great Renata Klein, played by Laura Dern on HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” once said, “I will not, not be rich!” And very soon, we may be rich in more content from the Emmy award-winning series.
Regarding a third season of the hit HBO drama, Reese Witherspoon told Variety on the carpet of the 81st Golden Globes in January, “We are working on it. [Nicole Kidman] and I have been working on it a lot.”
Well, IndieWire caught up with star Kathryn Newton at the 17th Annual Women in Film Oscar Nominees Party on Friday, March 8 at Catch Steak LA. Newton, of course, plays Abigail Carson, the daughter of Reese Witherspoon and Adam Scott’s characters Madeline Martha Mackenzie and Ed Mackenzie. We could not help but ask her if she has been hearing anything in her orbit about a third installment.

Kathryn Newton is inevitably one of the best actresses of this generation. Yet, her recent onscreen performances aren’t quite catching fire at box offices the same way they did before. Just like how her Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) managed to gross almost thrice its budget, her recent Ant-Man 3 failed to land the mark and ended with a disappointing box office run.
Kathryn Newton in The Society
As it seems, that losing box-office streak of hers isn’t dying down easily. This comes after her most recent movie Lisa Frankenstein suffered a devastating blow at the worldwide box office to end its run with a gross even less than its budget. Despite this, her fans still have high hopes for this film, even predicting that it would go on to become a cult classic following its release on streaming.

Beneath its silliness and Lisa Frank shimmer, Zelda Williams’ Lisa Frankenstein examines death and the difficult task of overcoming it. When death preys upon your life, you lose your identity and who you once were – your life now splits into halves: the before and the after. For Lisa (Kathryn Newton), she finds herself sluggishly trudging through life in pursuit of something, anything to make her feel again. Nothing has any meaning, so she pulls away from her family and friends (if she had any) and instead finds solace in a nearby cemetery called Bachelors Grove. There, she enjoys the sunshine, the peace and the quiet, and turns to journaling and gravestone rubbings to pass her time. Other living people are the last things on her mind.
After a torrential downpour, Lisa, high on an accidental dose of Pcp, wanders to the graveyard where she approaches her favorite gravestone, that of a young gentleman named Frankenstein.

Zelda William's Lisa Frankenstein is the dark, hilarious, yet genuinely sweet movie that lovesick horror fans like me have been waiting for. Set in the same universe as the 2009 horror-comedy Jennifer's Body, the best way to describe the film is Weird Science meets Heathers, as the outcast Lisa (Kathryn Newton) reanimates a bachelor from the 1830s (Cole Sprouse), and finds replacements for his missing parts by any means necessary. With the release and success of this heartwarming tale of a lonely girl and her undead boyfriend, we're finally seeing another wide-release monster romance since the human-djinn love story of 2022's Three Thousand Years of Longing and, before that, The Shape Of Water in 2017. This tale as old as time gets few and far between film releases these days, whether it's because of lingering Twilight fatigue, or the tricky intersection of genres. Hopefully, Lisa Frankenstein opens the floodgates for more beauties and beasts.

Cole Sprouse rocked a wildly oversized blazer for the Balenciaga runway show in Paris. Fans took the opportunity to tease the Riverdale star over his “silly” outfit.
The brown blazer featured large shoulder pads and leaves that went past his hands. Sprouse also wore baggy gingham pants, adding to the oversized look.
Several users took to X to share their humorous thoughts.

Most people can’t wear a sheer dress to work or diaper-inspired shorts to a social outing. But celebrities can get away with a lot. They are exposed to the latest fashion trends. And they often do their best to stand out from the rest. This can lead to some wild style choices, especially during Fashion Month. Here are the wackiest looks spotted at Paris Fashion Week 2024.

Characters on TV shows can vanish without explanation due to various reasons, leaving audiences puzzled. Some shows fail to acknowledge a character's absence, causing confusion and discontent among fans. Disappearing characters like Ben Geller and Tina Pinciotti left viewers wondering about their unresolved storylines.
While many TV shows have introduced plenty of interesting personalities, some characters mysteriously disappeared from a show without any explanation. There are plenty of reasons why a character might not return to a show, whether that be the actor deciding to move on to another project, a change in production or writers, or simply because said character isn't needed anymore. When a character does leave a TV show, however, not all of them get the send-off they deserve.
Of course, from a creative point of view, if a character needs to be removed from a TV show, it'll happen. However, not every show bothers to explain...

What do you do when they come for you? Beloved horror franchise “The Strangers” is getting a revamp, courtesy of prequel “The Strangers: Chapter 1” starring “Riverdale” alum Madelaine Petsch. Two more sequels are due later this year, all from “Die Hard 2” and “Cliffhanger” director Renny Harlin.
In this first film, Petsch stars as a young woman who is trying to start a new life with her fiancé. Yet, during a road trip stop in a remote vacation rental in the woods, the couple become the prey of a mysterious gang of masked strangers who attack without warning or reason. Froy Gutierrez, Gabriel Basso, and Ema Horvath co-star.
Sure, it may sound like a run-of-the-mill slasher, but “The Strangers” franchise has a haunting allure, thanks to its creation by filmmaker Bryan Bertino. The director has a “story by” credit for “Chapter 1,” which is helmed by Harlin and written by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland.

Sci-fi blockbuster Dune: Part Two opens in 721 venues this weekend, carrying the hopes of many UK-Ireland cinemas after a slow start to 2024.
Denis Villeneuve’s sequel is Warner Bros’ fourth-widest opening of all time in the territory, after last year’s Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom (749) and Barbie (724), and 2022’s Elvis (746).
It is opening on 62 sites more than Dune, which started in 659 venues in October 2021. That film began with a £4.8m weekend at a £7,210 average, dethroning James Bond title No Time To Die. It went on to a £22.1m total – a decent result in a market still feeling the effects of the pandemic.

Stars: Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, Liza Soberano, Henry Eikenberry, Joe Chrest, Carla Gugino | Written by Diablo Cody | Directed by Zelda Williams
Billed as “a coming of Rage story”, this undead comedy-horror is directed by Zelda Williams (daughter of Robin) and scripted by Diablo Cody, making a return to the teen girl horror genre after her 2009 cult hit Jennifer’s Body. As befits a film involving various dismembered body parts, Lisa Frankenstein is occasionally patchy and clumsily put together, but the witty script and fun performances carry it through.
Set in 1989, the film centres on Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton), who’s still withdrawn after witnessing her mother’s butchering during a home invasion by an axe murderer. Meanwhile, her taciturn father (Joe Chrest) has moved on and remarried, meaning that Lisa now has both an evil stepmother (Carla Gugino) and a popular, kind-hearted, but not too bright sister-in-law, Taffy (Liza Soberano).

If only Mary Shelley could've lived to see a Frankenstein story with a twist quite like this one. Horror fans have been waiting quite some time for writer Diablo Cody to get another kick at the horror can after 2009's "Jennifer's Body," the Megan Fox-starring flick that's taken on the air of a genuine cult classic after initially bombing among critics and audiences alike. For Millennials of a certain age, time has been kind to the unabashedly feminist story of a demon possessing a high school student and developing a taste for male flesh (as one does), and now the time has come for everyone to offer up a long-overdue mea culpa. Luckily, this year's release of the hilariously offbeat "Lisa Frankenstein" feels like the perfect opportunity to do just that.

Few female killers in the wide world of horror have been able to match the impact of Jennifer Check. Played by the incomparable Megan Fox, Diablo Cody’s teenage seductress rises from the ashes of a hideous crime and returns to wreak bloody vengeance on the teenage boys in her small town. Jennifer’s Body was initially dismissed as a vapid vehicle for a gorgeous star – an unfortunate parallel to the film’s own message – but Karyn Kusama’s teen horror comedy has finally found a devoted audience that appreciates its biting satire and unflinching look at the hell of teenage girlhood. Fifteen years later, Cody returns to the genre with a new heroine searching for power in a world built to dismiss her. It has been six months since Riverdale ended. The CW supernatural teenage show had quite a long run of seven seasons. From romance to murder mystery to horror elements, the series had everything. Based on Archie Comics, the show stars Lili Reinhart, Cole Sprouse, Camila Mendes, Kj Apa, Madelaine Petsch, Vanessa Morgan, Casey Cott and others.
Riverdale’s storyline always perplexed the audience. Sometimes, it made sense, and most of the time, none of it made sense. However, the show gave us unique talents and solid friendships. Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes and Madelaine Petsch are one such trio who became good friends on the sets. The ladies often shared beautiful pictures and cool TikTok videos.
So, has anything changed ever since the show ended? Did their friendship change, and is the cast still connected via group chat? Camila has answered these burning questions.

[This story contains graphic spoilers for Lisa Frankenstein.]
If Lisa Frankenstein is any indication, we’re going to be seeing a lot more of Liza Soberano in years to come.
At the age of 10, the Filipino-American actor moved from Visalia, Calif. to Manila, the capital of the Philippines, and she found countrywide success at the age of 16 for her romantic drama series, Forevermore. Soberano has continued to enjoy success as an actor, model and spokesperson, but her American roots kept calling for her to try her hand at forging an acting career in the States.
In the summer of 2022, Soberano finally took the plunge by sending off a self-tape for a key supporting role in Diablo Cody and Zelda Williams’ Lisa Frankenstein, and within a week, she was on the New Orleans set of her first American movie. She plays the eponymous Lisa’s (Kathryn Newton) outgoing stepsister, Taffy, who’s also a pageant girl and popular cheerleader with a dash of duplicity.

Dimension 20 has hopped between all sorts of genres and settings over 20 seasons. One of the most beloved is still Fantasy High: a combination of teenage coming-of-age stories and the high fantasy usually associated with games like Dungeons & Dragons. Now, the original cast -- along with Dm and series creator Brennan Lee Mulligan -- are back in the realm of Spire, reprising their old roles and taking the Bad Kids further than ever in Fantasy High: Junior Year.
During an interview with Cbr, Zac Oyama discussed the joys of returning to the world of Fantasy High and finding surprises with Gorgug Thistlespring's character growth. He also compared the short-form improv of shows like Make Some Noise with Dimension 20's longer (but still off the cuff) form of storytelling. Plus, find out which other Dimension 20 setting he'd be most excited to return to.

For most of his childhood, Cole Sprouse was naturally lumped together with his identical twin brother, Dylan Sprouse. They started their acting careers while still in diapers, unaware of the future fame their first commercial would bring. When the boys were 12, they were cast to star in their own Disney show, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. The pair spent six years in the roles due to the success of that series as well as the spin-off series The Suite Life of the Deck and then, finally, The Suite Life Movie.
At the age of 18, the twins decided to take a step back from child stardom and pursue a college education. Both were adamant about studying something other than film to gain perspective of the world outside of countdowns and stage lights. Once out of college, the two split off into different career paths. Within a year, Sprouse received a...

Molli and Max in the Future is an impressive feature debut from director and writer Michael Lukk Litwak that utilizes its small budget extremely well. The set design is a feast for the eyes, while the story follows a futuristic love odyssey that spans decades. The chemistry between stars Zosia Mamet and Aristotle Athari is palpable, further elevating this movie to greatness. Molli and Max in the Future is hilarious and heartfelt, and a breath of fresh air in both the romantic comedy and sci-fi genres.
The film takes place billions of years from now and follows the titular characters, who first meet as bright-eyed young adults when they get into a spacecraft accident with each other. Molli and Max encounter one another several more times throughout 12 years. But as they live their lives and get into strange intergalactic shenanigans involving robots and a cult, Molli and Max start to...

Lisa Frankenstein is a lot of things all at once, melding teenage shenanigans with a grisly tale of the undead. It's a twisted take on a classic high school-centric story, focusing on Lisa (Kathryn Newton). Lisa is a quiet young woman trying to adjust to a new perky stepsister named Taffy (Liza Soberano) after her father remarries following the death of her mother. But the reanimated Creature (played by Riverdale alum Cole Sprouse) shakes up her life and helps teach her how to live again -- even as their escapades develop an ever-increasing body count.
The film being as funny, sweet, and unique as it is comes largely down to the talent in front of and behind the camera -- including one of Hollywood's most prominent writers of the teenage experience. During an interview with Cbr, Lisa Frankenstein director Zelda Williams and writer Diablo Cody discussed the tonal balancing act for the film.

Jennifer’s Body writer Diablo Cody returned to horror over the weekend with the theatrical release of horror-comedy Lisa Frankenstein, directed by Zelda Williams and starring Kathryn Newton (Freaky) and Cole Sprouse (“Riverdale”). While the film may go on to become a cult favorite, it unfortunately didn’t make much of a splash in its opening weekend.
Lisa Frankenstein scared up just $3.8 million in its theatrical debut here in the United States, with Focus Features giving the film a massive wide release in 3,144 total theaters.
The production budget for Zelda Williams’ Lisa Frankenstein was a reported $13 million, so the film has quite a long way to go before it starts turning a profit for Focus Features.
The film is currently “rotten” on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with a 49% Tomatometer score. The good news? The film’s audience score is much higher at 82% fresh.

February continued January’s downturn at the box office, with two new wide releases and a hotly-anticipated Super Bowl Sunday to keep anything from doing particularly well. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Of the two new wide releases, Focus Features’ romantic horror-comedy “Lisa Frankenstein” was probably the most high-profile one, but otherwise, much of the chatter this weekend was about an impending sporting event and whether a certain pop star might attend.
Even though Matthew Vaughn‘s star-studded action comedy, “Argylle,” took a massive 63% plunge in its second weekend, it still managed to retain first place with a weak $6.5 million, which is back down to the level of the top movies just two weeks ago. It has grossed $28.8 million domestically so far, which isn’t great considering the cost to Apple Studios to buy and release it. It added another $9.4 million internationally this weekend for a global take of $60.1 million so far.

Matthew Vaughn’s spy thriller “Argylle” emerged victorious over newcomer “Lisa Frankenstein” in a moribund box office with both films struggling to show signs of life.
“Argylle” claimed the No. 1 spot again with $6.5 million from 3,605 North American venues, marking a steep 62% decline from its disappointing debut. After two weeks of release, Apple’s big-budget caper has generated $28.8 million at the domestic box office and a dismal $60 million globally. It cost $200 million to produce and stands as the year’s first big bomb.
Horror-comedy “Lisa Frankenstein” cratered in second place with $3.8 million from 3,144 venues — a terrible start for any movie in wide release. However, Focus Features only spent $13 million to make the film, which may cushion box office shortcomings.
That’s a relief for the studio because neither critics nor audiences responded to the movie, which holds a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes and “B” on CinemaScore. “Juno” screenwriter Diablo Cody wrote “Lisa Frankenstein,...

Sunday Am Update: How bad was this year’s Super Bowl weekend? Realize that Kenneth Branagh’s romance mystery misfire, Death on the Nile, opened to more over the Big Game weekend ($12.8M) two years ago, and that’s when female moviegoers were scared of Omicron!
Super Bowl weekend, despite its damper on Sunday business, used to be a box office frame that could still yield results, even for films aimed at dudes. Like in 2015, when the sixth weekend of American Sniper drummed up $30.7 million, or in 2020, when the third weekend of Bad Boys for Life did $17.6M.
Last year’s Super Bowl weekend totaled $52.6M, per Box Office Mojo, led by Warner Bros’ Magic Mike’s Last Dance, with an $8.3M opening. This year, we’re lower at $40M, -24% from a year ago and that’s because there isn’t a notable major studio wide release. That’s also...

Camila Mendes delivers a great performance in Upgraded, elevating the material. Upgraded is a cozy comfort watch for fans of traditional romantic comedies, with a strong supporting cast. While it hints at socially relevant topics, it never delivers on them, and the film can feel derivative at times and doesn't follow through on its potential.
Upgraded, not to be confused with Leigh Whannel's 2018 R-rated action movie Upgrade, is the latest entry from Prime Video as their major Valentine's Day weekend tie-in. Starting in 2021 with the release of The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, the streamer has released yearly romance movies as a viewing option for couples over the romantic holiday that in the past likely would have been mid-budget theatrical releases. These have yielded mixed results, from 2022's delightfully funny I Want You Back to the well-intentioned but tonally confused Somebody I Used to Know in 2023. Upgraded feels like...

Plot: A coming-of-Rage love story about a teenager and her crush, who happens to be a corpse. After a set of horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a journey to find love, happiness – and a few missing body parts.
Review: It seems as though 2023’s obsession with Frankenstein is continuing into 2024 as we get yet another version of the Mary Shelley story. But this one feels decidedly more Weird Science than the more macabre tone of, say, the Kenneth Branagh version. And with Diablo Cody behind the words, I suppose that’s not exactly a surprise. Juno took over the world and pretty much-changed dialogue in teen cinema, so expectations were high for the film. And this is her return to the genre after a long absence. But, like Jennifer’s Body, Lisa Frankenstein feels more like lost potential than anything.

This weekend brings a jocks vs. weirdos showdown, as "Lisa Frankenstein" prepares to take on the tough box office challenge of competing with Super Bowl Sunday. The movie is the feature directorial debut from Zelda Williams (daughter of the late Robin Williams) and it boasts a screenplay by Diablo Cody, who returns to the horror comedy for the first time since writing 2009's "Jennifer's Body." In her latest spooky tale, Kathryn Newton ("Freaky") stars as the titular goth with a yearning for a dead boy, and Cole Sprouse ("Riverdale") plays said dead boy.
Earlier box office forecasting for "Lisa Frankenstein" had it pegged for a $9 million to $14 million debut, but it now looks set to fall far short of that range. Opening in 3,144 locations, the film grossed just $1.7 million on its opening day (including Thursday previews), and Variety reports that it's now tracking to make just $4 million over the weekend.

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for “Lisa Frankenstein,” “Jennifer’s Body,” and “Young Adult.”]
Sometimes rage is the only way for a woman to get what she wants — especially if she’s a teenage girl with nothing else on her side. And no one channels that rage into movies better than screenwriter Diablo Cody.
The latest Cody film has all the signature requirements behind the Oscar-winning screenwriter’s scripts: Billed by Focus Features as “a coming of Rage love story,” the teen-centric, not quite rom-com hinges on the sexual awakening and empowerment of a high school senior (Kathryn Newton) who seeks solace from a centuries-old corpse (Cole Sprouse) after grieving death and coping with an assault.
“Lisa Frankenstein” is just the most recent female-fronted original horror-dark comedy from Cody, who penned the iconic “Jennifer’s Body” and recently told Deadline that “Lisa Frankenstein” exists in the same universe as the Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried two-hander.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains mild spoilers for “Lisa Frankenstein,” in theaters now.
Zelda Williams has no problem admitting that her feature directorial debut “Lisa Frankenstein” isn’t destined to be considered a cinematic masterpiece.

And that it is — a rollercoaster homage to 1980s slasher films. Written by Oscar winner Diablo Cody, “Lisa Frankenstein” stars Kathryn Newton as a high school outsider who falls for a centuries-old non-verbal corpse (Cole Sprouse) that has come back to life.

It isn’t alive, unfortunately. “Lisa Frankenstein” is facing a quiet opening at the domestic box office after earning $1.7 million from 3,144 locations on its opening day, including $700,000 in Thursday previews. The Focus Features release will likely fall behind the second frame of Apple Studios’ “Argylle,” which crashed in its debut last weekend.
“Lisa Frankenstein” is looking at a soft debut with around $4 million over the three-day frame. It’s not a very strong start for the horror-aesthete romantic comedy, though a very modest $13 million production price tag means that Focus is facing a softened financial hit should the movie not stick around theaters. Reviews have been mixed and audiences aren’t very enthused either, as indicated by research firm Cinema Score’s “B” grade from surveying early audiences.
Diablo Cody pens “Lisa Frankenstein,” a PG-13 romance about a mad scientist teenager who decides to build her own boyfriend from a corpse.

It looks like my box office predictions for Lisa Frankenstein were a bit off, with Deadline’s early numbers suggesting the 80s retro horror film is dying at the box office. Indeed, the Kathryn Newton/ Cole Sprouse movie is looking at only a $4 million debut despite being open on over 3000 screens. It’s actually not doing that much better than Jason Statham’s The Beekeeper, which has been open for five weeks and is already on VOD.
The only thing working in Lisa Frankestein‘s favour is that this budget was slim, an estimated $14 million. Still, that’s a rough opening when you consider the marketing costs. Critics were not kind to the film, which marks the directorial debut of Zelda Williams, daughter of the late great Robin Williams. Our own Tyler Nichols gave it a middling 6/10, praising Newton’s performance, but still found the film was “sloppy” and “lacked cohesion.

Zelda Williams, daughter of Robin Williams, makes her directorial debut with the dark and hilarious film Lisa Frankenstein. Diablo Cody, the award-winning screenwriter of Young Adult, Juno, and Jennifer's Body, collaborates with Williams to create a uniquely twisted take on the classic horror trope. The film stars Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, and Carla Gugino, and offers a morbidly funny joyride for dark comedy lovers.
Back in 2008, Diablo Cody won an Oscar for her incredible Juno script. Ever since, she has continued to churn out award-caliber screenplays, including Tully, Young Adult, and more. Also in the mix is her cult-classic Jennifer's Body script, and Cody has even voiced interest in penning a sequel for the Megan Fox cult classic. In the meantime, director Zelda Williams (daughter of the iconic Robin Williams) has pounced on Cody's most recent work: Lisa Frankenstein, which, like Jennifer's Body, offers up an absurdist, feminist, and playful...

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Jenn Adams puts a candy-colored lens over the hot pink horror sub-genre.
The color most associated with the horror genre is undoubtedly red. Not only the hue of blood and anger, it’s also the shade of the iconic devil – a masculine figure said to be the source of all evil. But in recent years a new color has emerged to evoke a different kind of rage. Hot pink has become the new tone of female-centered horror.
