After the massive success of the "Wayne's World" movies, studios were eager to capitalize on the popularity of "Saturday Night Live" cast member Mike Myers and his ability to create truly memorable characters. While womanizing James Bond spoof that is Austin Powers wasn't something Myers brought to "SNL" like the "Wayne's World" sketches, the shagadelic spoy blew up in pop culture pretty quickly.
"Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" made him a household name in 1997, complete with a massive marketing campaign and merchandise ranging from Austin Powers Halloween costumes to vintage tin lunchboxes. For a few short years, it seemed like Hollywood got swept up in Powers-mania, as two sequels were released in fairly quick succession. But after "Austin Powers in Goldmember" in 2002, the character pretty much disappeared from the pop culture consciousness. Rumors of a fourth film have circulated for years, with the most recent ones popping up just...

November is here, and that means the holiday season isn’t far behind! Christmas is now fewer than eight weeks out, and many lovers of the yuletide time of year are already setting up their holiday watchlists. It’s hard to imagine such watchlists being truly complete, however, without a visit from Dr. Seuss’s mean, green, Christmas-hating Grinch!
There have been three Grinch movies made thus far; 1966’s animated classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” the Jim Carrey-starring live-action movie of the same name which first came out in 2000, and 2018’s animated “The Grinch,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the holiday-loathing titular character.
Where Can You Watch ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ (1966)
The original Grinchy adventure makes for fond memories, especially for millennials who recall fondly watching the film during elementary school parties before the holiday break. The film is available to stream on Peacock, which offers a great...

A total of 38 individuals received their first Primetime Emmy acting nominations in 2023, including “George & Tammy” stars Jessica Chastain and Michael Shannon and comedic leads Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”) and Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”). Of the newbies in this group, Pedro Pascal is the only one who scored bids for his live action work on multiple programs. In addition to landing in the Best Drama Actor lineup as a star of “The Last of Us,” he also earned a shot at the Best Comedy Guest Actor prize for hosting an episode of “Saturday Night Live.”
Pascal (who was also on the first-round drama lead ballot for “The Mandalorian” and picked up a narration bid for “Patagonia”) could become the seventh doubly-nominated first-timer to succeed on one or both of his mentions. The first to achieve this feat was Robert Cummings, who concurrently won for “12 Angry Men” and lost for...

When the 2022 Primetime Emmy nominations were revealed, Rhea Seehorn and Sydney Sweeney both had the honor of seeing their names come up twice. In addition to landing slots in the Best Drama Supporting Actress lineup for “Better Call Saul” and “Euphoria,” respectively, Seehorn (“Cooper’s Bar”) also competed for Best Short Form Actress while Sweeney (“The White Lotus”) was included among the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress contenders. Since neither of them had been recognized by the TV academy before, they became part of a group of 24 doubly-nominated Emmy first-timers.
Neither Seehorn nor Sweeney succeeded on either of her bids, but that isn’t surprising given the fact that only six of this group’s two dozen members have actually pulled off wins. The first such victor was Robert Cummings, who also originally established the club back in 1955. He received what would now be considered the Best Limited/Movie...

Upon last week's debut of the third season of "Star Trek: Picard," it was clear that the series was gearing up to be more tonally attuned to the "Star Trek" feature films than to the previous seasons of the series. Already, the story is cleaner, the conflict is easier to understand, and the characters are all familiar. Indeed, it seems that Raffi (Michelle Hurd) is the only original "Picard" character that has survived into the third season. Capt. Rios, Dr. Jurati, and Elnor are gone, and it seems that Picard's potential love interest in his housekeeper Laris (Orla Brady) will be brushed off. Instead, "Picard" — as mentioned in previous reviews — has retreated into familiar.
Episode 2, "Disengage," shows just how familiar this season aims to be by revealing itself to be yet another riff on "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," a ploy Trek has attempted with several features in the past.

The "Avatar: The Last Airbender" franchise has been experiencing a surge in popularity in recent years, what with the announcement of two different new TV projects and a planned film trilogy, the bouncing of the original series between different streaming homes as a subscription draw, the creation of a Nickelodeon division focused specifically on "Avatar"-related content, and the "Avatar: Braving the Elements" rewatch podcast hosted by Zuko and Korra themselves, Dante Basco, and Janet Varney. Finally, after many years of insufficient cultural and critical attention paid to what's inarguably one of the best and most beloved fantasy TV franchises of all time, it appears that the industry, the press, and the world at large are catching up to the greatness of Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko's creation.
Even so, a lot of that renewed attention has been directed towards "The Last Airbender," with its sequel series, "The Legend of Korra,...

It takes an event like the Super Bowl to reunite some of Hollywood’s most distinctive characters.
Tuco Salamanca the menacing drug lord, is set to join Walter White and Jesse Pinkman in a Super Bowl commercial from PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay snack division that aims to call attention to its PopCorners popped-corn snack. Yes, Walt and Tuco met their respective ends in the popular TV series, “Breaking Bad,” but the requirements of a Super Bowl ad can sometimes negate even the release of death.
The characters, played by Raymond Cruz, Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul. will be in good company. Vince Gilligan, the creator, head writer and executive producer of “Breaking Bad,” will direct the commercial and the teaser videos that lead up to it.

As a sequel to "Avatar: The Last Airbender," "The Legend of Korra" started off with big shoes to fill. The series didn't always walk the straightest path in these shoes. "Book 1: Air" is rock solid but underserved by its breezy 12-episode run. "Book 2: Spirits" is entertaining but a structural mess. However, seasons 3 and 4 overcame the growing pains and delivered an experience as incredible as "The Last Airbender" at its best.
One area where "Korra" never faltered was its voice cast. Comedian Janet Varney was perfect as Korra, imbuing the young Avatar with both spunk and self-doubt. Updated with more ads Super Bowl Lvi is finally upon us, and it feels a lot different than last year’s big game.
For starters, SoFi Stadium in LA will be full. A year ago, the game vividly reflected the grueling early phase of Covid, as Tampa Bay’s Raymond James Stadium hosted 24,835 fans, one-third of whom were newly vaccinated health care workers.
This season, roaring crowds and close games have boosted NFL ratings, with the conference championship games at the end of January posting multi-year highs. NBCUniversal, which will carry the Super Bowl on NBC, Peacock and Telemundo, is hoping that breadth will goose ratings. Even for an event that is the longtime king of tune-in, any increase (after last year’s tumble to 96.4 million viewers) would be a tonic.
Better ratings, though, would merely be icing on an already lucrative cake. All of the ad inventory sold out...

It’s 1997 all over again, as the cast of “Austin Powers” has reunited for a new Super Bowl spot set to air during the Big Game on Sunday. Mike Myers reprises his iconic role from the comedy franchise in a commercial for Gm alongside Seth Green as Scott, Mindy Sterling as Frau Farbissina and Rob Lowe as the younger version of Number 2 from the 1999 sequel “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me”.
The commercial finds Dr. Evil and Co. taking over General Motors, with a heavy emphasis on reducing carbon emissions. The ad brings back the death chair gag from the first film, as Dr. Evil considers killing his son as he continues to annoy him – only for Frau Farbissina to intervene. Scott, meanwhile, reveals that he has a baby, which Dr. Evil immediately dubs “Baby Me.”

One of the self-proclaimed greatest villains in history is coming to the Super Bowl to take over the world — but only if he can save it first.
General Motors is likely to cause a stir on Sunday when it debuts a Super Bowl commercial for its growing fleet of electric vehicles that reunites the cast of the 1997 hit “Austin Powers.” The goal is to get consumers thinking about cars and trucks that are better for the environment. While it’s much easier to gather with family this year, that doesn’t mean we can’t uphold some well-worn holiday traditions, like settling in on the couch with some hot cocoa to watch Christmas movies. Even if you’re not physically in the room with them, watch parties using integrated apps or Zooms or other virtual meetups means you can still have a collective, shared experience — just over the internet.
And if you are lucky enough to be in the same place as your family, you can spend time with your loved ones and cherish the fact that you’re able to be close to them Irl when so many people cannot be with theirs.

Even if you’re not physically in the room with them, watch parties using integrated apps or Zooms or other virtual meetups means you can still have a collective, shared experience — just over the internet.

The scariest thing about Halloween this year isn’t the ghosts and goblins, but those who refuse to wear a mask. That’s why LA-based ad agency Zambezi has created a truly spooky Covid-19 PSA especially well suited for the times. Helmed by director Gina Kelly, the film features none other than Halloween’s Michael Myers himself, Nick Castle – along with a parade of funny and familiar faces like Mindy Sterling (Austin Powers), Tara Copeland (Curb Your Enthusiasm), and more. The:30 spot, “Screamfest” has a spooky classic horror movie feel, and shows the approach of a trick-or-treater to an ominous house at twilight. Suspense builds, and ultimately reveals a terrified person inside the house who lets out a blood-curdling scream when seeing the visitor on their doorstep. This pattern repeats throughout the spot, and ends with the message of “This Halloween…please wear a mask.” Check out the “Screamfest” below: Screamfest from Zambezi on Vimeo.

Maya Rudolph has two nominations for Best Comedy Guest Actress this year, making her the first actor in Emmy history to be nominated twice in the same guest category in a single year. This is her third consecutive nomination for her recurring role as Judge Gen on “The Good Place,” which contends now for its final season. This is her second nomination for “Saturday Night Live”; she is up for her impression of Senator Kamala Harris, having been recognized previously for a 2012 hosting gig.
SEEour rundown on this year’s Emmy Award nominations.
Dueling guest nominations have only been possible since 2010, as performers were limited to one listing per guest ballot before then. A similar rule remains in effect for the Best Directing and Best Technical Direction categories. A caveat is that Jane Alexander and Angela Lansbury were each nominated in Best Drama Guest Actress for multiple series in 2000 and 2005 respectively,...

Cherry Jones is back to defend her Emmy crown for “The Handmaid’s Tale” as the reigning Best Drama Guest Actress champion, but she faces heavy competition — from herself. Gold Derby’s combined odds actually predict that Jones will be snubbed for “The Handmaid’s Tale” and nominated for her new recurring role on Best Drama Series front-runner “Succession” instead. The rules allow her to be nominated for both, but nobody has ever been nominated against themselves in a guest category. Apprehension about predicting history to be made also helps to explain why Maya Rudolph ranks outside the top 20 in Best Comedy Guest Actress for “Saturday Night Live.” She has been nominated previously in that category for that show, but she is already the front-runner in that race for “The Good Place.”

I do have to admit that the simple reason for me watching Seven Stages To Achieve Eternal Bliss is because Taiki Waititi stars in it. As is often the case, just because one actor yu like is in a movie (particularly low budget movies) it might not be the best reason to view it. But it’s Taiki Waititi right?!
As you might be expecting Waititi isn’t actually in the movie a whole lot but on to that later. Seven Stages To Achieve Eternal Bliss is a ridiculous comedy about a young couple who move in to a place that is clearly to good to be true. It’s well located, super cheap and is home to ritualistic...

"If you want to get to my level, you just get nice and mediocre." Gravitas Ventures has unveiled an official trailer for an indie small town dramedy titled International Falls, the latest film from up-and-coming filmmaker Amber McGinnis (also of The Company We Keep). This premiered at the Atlanta Film & Video Festival, along with the Seattle & Nashville Film Festivals last year. A woman stuck in a small, snowbound border town has dreams of doing comedy when she meets a washed up, burned out comedian with dreams of doing anything else. One review states, "International Falls has a similar feel to Fargo… It will leave you feeling both sad and supremely satisfied." Starring real-life comedian / actress Rachael Harris, with Rob Huebel, Mindy Sterling, Erik Griffin, Matthew Glave, & Kevin Nealon. Looks charming and funny. When “Drop Dead Gorgeous” was released in 1999, Variety’s review was less than glowing: “Taking bazooka aim at a barn-door-wide target — hinterland beauty contests — [the film] is a fitfully amusing satire that would have gained a lot of mileage from just a tad more subtlety.”
Perhaps. But then the movie gained a massive gay following over the past 20 years precisely because of over-the-top performances from a cast that included Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams, Ellen Barkin, Allison Janney and the late Brittany Murphy.
“Right from the very beginning, walking into meetings as a very young man, I told them that this was a movie for people who are outsiders and don’t feel like they’re represented by regular movies,” director Michael Patrick Jann told Variety at a special screening of the film on Saturday night in Hollywood. “It’s an anti-mainstream movie and they still bought it for some reason.”

There’s a movie opening this week that you should be paying more attention to. It’s one of 2018’s very best, features an Oscar worthy lead performance, and announces a brilliant female filmmaker as someone to really watch out for. The movie in question? All About Nina, which I’ve been raving about since the Tribeca Film Festival. This weekend marks the time where it finally hits theaters. The performance in question belongs to Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who will blow you mind. The filmmaker in question is Eva Vives, who should be at the top of ever executive’s list when looking for an exciting director to meet with. It all adds up to something that’s among the five best things I’ve seen all year. The flick is phenomenal from start to finish. Once again, for those of you who forgot, the film is a pitch black...

SAG-AFTRA has resumed negotiations with companies on TV animation work, two months after members overwhelmingly approved a strike authorization.
The key issue for the union is employers’ refusal to provide scale wages or residuals in the fastest-growing area of animated performers’ work — animated programs made for subscription-based streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon. More than 75% of those union voting members had to approve of the strike authorization for SAG-aftra’s national board to call a strike.
SAG-aftra members are working under a contract that expired more than a year ago. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the negotiating arm for the entertainment companies, had no comment on Wednesday about the resumption of negotiations. This film remains a real favorite of mine, so it’s one that will heavily mentioned in the weeks to come, you can take that to the bank. Today, we’ll be focusing on the Trailer itself, which you can see below. First up, however, some more raving about this movie. It’s one of my top five films of the year right now, so that kind of goes without saying. Vives and Winstead deserve plenty of attention when the precursor season hits in the late fall/early winter. "You keep being honest! What's a matter with you?" The Orchard has released an official trailer for an indie comedy titled All About Nina, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead as a provocative stand-up comedian named Nina Geld working her way close to breaking out. After getting an audition, she decides to head to La and encounters a nice new guy named Rafe, while running into old problems with her ex. The cast includes Common as Rafe, Chace Crawford as Joe, plus Camryn Manheim, Jay Mohr, Mindy Sterling, Angelique Cabral, Clea DuVall, Kate del Castillo, and Beau Bridges. SAG-AFTRA members have approved a strike authorization for work in TV animation, with more than 98% voting in favor.
The union announced the vote Wednesday evening, shortly after the deadline for members to vote.
The key issue for the union is the refusal of employers to provide scale wages or residuals in the fastest-growing area of animated performer’s work — animated programs made for subscription-based streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon. More than 75% of those voting had to approve of the strike authorization for SAG-aftra’s national board to call a strike.
The authorization was sent to “affected members” on June 27 and the union held informational meetings in Los Angeles and New York on July 10. SAG-aftra also created a #ToonsUnited hashtag to promote support for the authorization vote.
SAG-aftra President Gabrielle Carteris announced the results in a message posted on the SAG-aftra website.
