(To celebrate "Titanic" and its impending 25th-anniversary re-release, we've put together a week of explorations, inquires, and deep dives into James Cameron's box office-smashing disaster epic.)
One of the problems with making a work of fiction based on a real historical event is that, well, a lot of the people in it were real, and their living relatives might not be thrilled about your portrayal of them. Sometimes, even minor moments that most viewers wouldn't pick up on turn out to be a big problem, like when "Queen's Gambit" downplayed female chess champion Nona Gaprindashvili's career in a throwaway line and got sued for it. For a movie like "Titanic," based on a massive tragedy where the figures involved were put in tough situations with no easy choices, portraying someone inaccurately can lead to a much bigger, more prolonged backlash.
Such was the case for First Officer William Murdoch...

“You can be blasé about some things, Rose, but not about Titanic!”
Those words, spoken by the grandiose villain Cal Hockley to his dispassionate fiancée, Rose Dewitt Bukater, proved true both for the then-unprecedented ship and its fateful journey in 1912 and the record-breaking juggernaut film that told its story in 1997.
Twenty years after the film’s release, it’s hard not to see Titanic as an inevitable success: one of this century’s greatest love stories featuring two of today’s top stars, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, set against the backdrop of one of humanity’s greatest tragedies.
But before the film’s release, it was the subject of much scrutiny, with many mocking its premise, excessive budget and pushed release date. Before Rose and Jack ever made it to theaters, Titanic was nearly dead in the water, with two studios -- Paramount and Fox -- shouldering the financial burden of the $200 million budget, which at the time...

Peter Mullan as Hector: 'I don't think any first-time director making a film with Peter Mullan in the lead role could deny being very, very nervous for the first couple of days' Many of the Christmas movies served up at this time of year are as heavily seasoned as Christmas dinner, complete with sugar-overload, but there are nearly always one or two little gems to look out for that celebrate the humanism and warmth of the season in less in-your-face ways. In the States, Christmas, Again is offering offbeat thoughtfulness and, here in the UK, Jake Gavin's debut film Hector explores what it means to be homeless in a season synonymous with hearth and family, without descending into misery.

FrightFest and Movie Mogul, in association with Horror Channel, challenged aspiring filmmakers all over the country to make a short horror film, but 666 Short Cuts To Hell was no ordinary film competition. Entrants had to follow a series of ‘killer’ restraints such as a maximum of 6 lines of dialogue, a maximum of 6 cast and crew members and a maximum budget of £666.
A staggering 157 entries made the grade and the overall winner will be announced at FrightFest 2013 on Sunday Aug 25 after the screening of all six films. On hand to congratulate all six finalists will be the distinguished judging panel; Horror Channel presenter Emily Booth, FrightFest director Paul McEvoy, Movie Mogul’s John Shackleton, Filmmaker Paul Hyett and journalist Rosie Fletcher. Tom Six is planning to attend subject to his commitments on Human Centipede 3.

The talented Mads Mikkelson stars in IFC Films' "Valhalla Rising," an action adventure helmed by the very capable Nicholas Winding Refn. It's a very limited release and opens at the IFC Center on July 16th, but worthy of exploration, I'm sure. Refn, who impressed with his work on "Bronson," directs as well as writing alongside Roy Jacobson. Also in the cast are Jamie Sives, Gary Lewis, Ewan Stewart, Alexander Morton, Callum Mitchell, Andrew Flanagan and Maarten Stevenson. For years, the fearsome figure known only as One Eye (Mads Mikkelsen) has defeated everyone he's encountered, but he's treated more like an animal than a warrior. The only person he has any relationship with is the young boy who brings him food and water daily. Constantly caged and shackled, One Eye has drawn the attention of a new force now sweeping the countryside and displacing the society's leaders: Christians.

This is a competition for Valhalla Rising directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and starring Mads Mikkelsen, Gary Lewis, Jamie Sives, Ewan Stewart, Alexander Morton, Callum Mitchell, Andrew Flanagan and Douglas Russell. From the producers of The Football Factory and the director of the critically acclaimed Pusher trilogy and controversial biopic Bronson, Nicolas Winding Refn's film depicts the unflinching violence and uncompromising brutality of the Viking Age period. Countering this harshness are the intense and thought provoking themes that raise the bar to what the director calls "science fiction for the mind". Valhalla Rising is visually stunning and contains an atmosphere that echoes Wrath of God and Apocalypse Now.

St. Trinian's II: The Legend of Fritton's Gold
Opens: 2010
Cast: Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, David Tennant, Gemma Arterton, Talulah Riley
Director: Oliver Parker, Barnaby Thompson
Summary: A rollercoaster-style treasure hunt for the legendary Fritton’s Gold ensues as the feisty and ever-resourceful schoolgirls of St Trinian’s face their most fearsome establishment rivals yet - the villainous Pomfrey and his sidekicks from the women-hating secret society known as AD1.
Analysis: While it didn't travel much beyond the UK, 2007's reboot of the "St Trinian's" franchise nearly doubled its £7 million production budget in sales in the UK alone - making it one of the top grossing independent British films of the past decade. Reviews were decidedly mixed but generally pretty weak at the time, so the greenlighting of a sequel surprised quite a few.
