This article contains spoilers through season 4 episode 7 of Succession.
With all of the Roy family’s drama, it’s easy to forget that Succession has spent all four seasons building up to a major presidential election with actual stakes. Given how obscenely wealthy the Roys are, politics have always been something they can casually interact with and flip sides on to suit their own personal needs without worrying about the cascading effects on the rest of the country. Even Connor’s (Alan Ruck) presidential campaign has felt more like a running joke than anything of consequence to the show. That is, until this week’s episode “Tailgate Party.”

The legacy of the Watergate break-in is one of virulent distrust in the American government, and in some cases aggressive empowerment of shady tactics from the American government. Our media has been enraptured with the story for decades, as an example of how head-and-shoulders-down journalism work can take down the tyrannical powers that be, from Alan J. Paluka’s “All the President’s Men” to Ron Howard’s “Frost/Nixon.”
But now, Hollywood has shifted to depictions from within the Watergate scandal. Just one year after the limited series “Gaslit,” we have a new five-episode limited series entitled “White House Plumbers.” And the results are sloppy, much like the actual Watergate break-in.
The primary White House Plumbers — the special investigation unit tasked to “plug leaks” emitting from the White House and protect President Richard Nixon’s power by any means necessary — are the gruff E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and the...

HBO’s White House Plumbers is born out of a simple truth: that the events that occurred at the Watergate Office Building on June 17, 1972, while accounting for one of the most seismic political scandals in American history, were profoundly stupid. By walking us through each step in the planning, execution, and attempted cover-up of the operation, Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck’s five-part limited series—based on Egil and Matthew Krogh’s 2007 book Integrity—effectively underlines just how braindead the whole thing was, even as it struggles to wring many laughs from its depiction of the events.
“No names have been changed to protect the innocent, because nearly everyone was found guilty” reads the opening title card, accompanied by a jazzy, Ocean’s Eleven-esque number as our suited-and-booted burglars stride confidently into the Watergate building. They almost immediately encounter a door that they’re unable to unlock and have no choice but to retreat.

Most are familiar with the Watergate scandal: several burglars were arrested at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters on June 17, 1972; President Richard Nixon’s administration attempted to cover up its involvement in the break-in; and the political crime ultimately led to Nixon’s resignation.
But who were the masterminds behind the Watergate scandal? Their perspectives are revealed in the upcoming HBO limited series, “White House Plumbers.”
“There’s so many different versions, and the one thing that happens in all these versions is the same scene right at the beginning; you see the guys breaking in with flashlights, and then you hear there was an arrest at the Watergate Hotel, or something like that. And that’s it — you never hear about those guys or see them again,” director David Mandel told Variety at the New York premiere of “White House Plumbers” on Monday night. “This is the story about...

"You tell those spine-less, two-faced politicians - loyalty is a two-way street!" HBO has debuted the full-length official trailer for White House Plumbers, making fun of the inside job mistakes during Watergate from the perspective of Nixon's lackeys. It looks like good fun, mocking the idiocy of people in Washington DC. The White House Plumbers tells the story of how Nixon's own political saboteurs and the Watergate masterminds, E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), accidentally toppled the presidency they were zealously trying to protect. The cast also includes Domhnall Gleeson, Kiernan Shipka, Ike Barinholtz, Yul Vazquez, David Krumholtz, and Lena Headey. A superb cast with some wickedly accurate political satire make this a must watch. This has the humor of The Nice Guys with the stupidity of the Nixon cabinet, which should make for some quality HBO entertainment. Have fun. // Continue Reading ›...

"I know things that could tear this country apart!" "Who really killed JFK?" HBO has revealed the first official trailer for an upcoming political comedy series about Watergate, called White House Plumbers, making fun of the real inside job mistakes from the perspective of Nixon's lackeys. Debuting in early 2023 on HBO. The White House Plumbers tells the story of how Nixon’s own political saboteurs and Watergate masterminds, E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. This is a fun first trailer, definitely got my attention - I want to watch the series. Harrelson seems to be just perfectly cast in this, having a rollicking good time in this role. The creators of "Veep" are back with another clever series.

The first teaser for “White House Plumbers,” a new HBO limited series about the Watergate Scandal, was released this Friday. In addition, HBO announced that the series will premiere March 2023.
Taking inspiration from the 2007 book “Integrity” by Richard Nixon administration lawyer Egil Krogh — who is played in the series by “Mad Men” actor Rich Sommer — and Matthew Krogh, “The White House Plumbers” recounts the Watergate break-in of the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters in 1972, from the perspective of E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), members of the “White House Plumbers” group tasked with stopping leaks of classified information who plotted the break-in that failed and eventually led to the collapse of Nixon’s administration. The series follows Hunt and Liddy as they desperately try to minimize the fallout of the breakout, and examines how the events impacted their personal lives.

Yul Vázquez is teaming up with Forest Whitaker in the upcoming third season of Godfather of Harlem as a new series regular.
Godfather of Harlem tells a story inspired by infamous crime boss Bumpy Johnson (Whitaker), who in the early 1960s returned from eleven years in prison to find the neighborhood he once ruled in shambles. Season Three will find Bumpy Johnson continuing to battle for control of Harlem, with other aspirants to the throne, namely the Cuban Mafia from neighboring Spanish Harlem. Taking on the Cuban mob will put Bumpy, his loved ones, and his community in the crosshairs of not only the rival Italians, but ruthless Latin assassins and, ultimately, the CIA. Godfather of Harlem is a collision of the criminal underworld and the civil rights movement during one of the most tumultuous times in American history.

Choosing the best TV episodes is very different from choosing the best TV.
The best episodes might be outstanding hours of shows that fluctuate in quality, or a pivotal character moment or story beat that contextualizes everything else. Sometimes the best episode is part of an almost embarrassing bounty — just one of many consistently brilliant installments in a TV show that blew away both audiences and critics.
IndieWire’s look at the best TV episodes of 2022 is all those things, populated by our usual suspects of top 2022 TV as well as hours we couldn’t forget and shows we gladly binged in a weekend. There is drama, there is comedy, there is literal “Euphoria.” This list has it all. What it doesn’t have, however, is more than one episode from the same show, in an effort to spread the wealth.

After stealing Season 3 of “Ozark” as Ben Davis, Wendy’s (Laura Linney) bipolar brother, Tom Pelphrey was poised to nab his maiden Primetime Emmy nomination in 2020 — or so we thought. Even as the Netflix show racked up its most citations ever for a single season with 18, Pelphrey was omitted from the TV academy’s Best Drama Supporting Actor lineup. But thanks to his surprising guest appearance in the show’s fourth and final installment, he is now back in Emmy contention for the gritty crime drama and ready to avenge his egregious snub.
The actor turns up in the farewell season’s 10th episode, “You’re the Boss,” which was directed by Emmy contender Melissa Hickey and opens with a flashback to the night Ben was executed. It picks up right where we last saw him in Season 3’s “Fire Pink” and depicts the moments leading up to his death,...

Calling all innies and outies! One of the buzziest new shows of the year, “Severance,” has finalized its plans for the 2022 Emmys. The Apple TV+ sci-fi series tells the tale of a company that wipes its employees’ memories every time they clock in so that outside influences won’t affect their work product. In all, 12 “Severance” cast members have been submitted on the Emmy ballot, including lead actor Adam Scott as Mark Scout, a conflicted severed worker, and supporting actress Patricia Arquette as Mrs. Harmony Cobel, a sinister Lumon Industries executive. See the full list below.
The cast is a veritable who’s-who of past awards shows, with Arquette being an Oscar winner for “Boyhood” (2014) and a two-time Emmy champ for “The Act” (2019) and “Medium” (2005). Christopher Walken, who plays Burt Goodman, the mild mannered and lovestruck severed chief, won an Oscar for “The Deer Hunter” (1978). And John Turturro, who takes...
