“That which does not kill us makes us stronger,” reads the Nietzschean maxim that serves as epigraph for writer-director John Milius’s 1982 adaptation of Conan the Barbarian, thereby encouraging viewers to plumb the philosophical depths of this rousing sword-and-sorcery epic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger from the get-go. So it’s sort of ironic to consider that, given the film’s commercial success and subsequent cult status, Milius no doubt contributed to the seemingly endless proliferation of this slogan across multiple platforms, emblazoned on everything from motivational posters to coffee mugs.
Milius’s seriousness of intent is signaled from the opening scene when Conan’s father (William Smith) advises his young son (Jorge Sanz) to trust nothing in this world but his sword. Critics at the time believed this solipsistic bit of paternal advice to reflect the ruthless individualism of Reagan’s America. But things are a bit more complicated than that,...

Conan the Destroyer is rightfully considered vastly inferior to the 1982 Conan the Barbarian. Ironically, Conan the Destroyer's tone and storyline are closer to a horror film than the first movie. Conan the Destroyer's tone reflects the original series creator's long association with H.P. Lovecraft.
Conan the Destroyer occupies a curious spot in pop culture. As a follow-up to the swords-and-sorcery classic Conan the Barbarian, it did what a lot of sequels do: lose the essence of the original and suffering a corresponding dip in box office fortunes. It was quickly forgotten in the wake of star Arnold Schwarzenegger's other signature role in The Terminator, which opened several months after Conan the Destroyer and put Robert E. Howard's Cimmerian on the back burner. Today, the second film is regarded as an unnecessary appendage of the first.

Paul Schrader’s Hardcore is one of the writer-director’s most unabashedly autobiographical films. The opening montage of winter in Grand Rapids, Michigan, contains shots of the street where he grew up, his family members, and places he worked. Schrader has also mentioned in interviews that George S. Scott’s Calvinist furniture manufacturer, Jake Van Dorn, is an equivocal portrait of his father.
That entire sequence is shot through with ambivalence. The Van Dorn clan is depicted with warmth and hominess, but there are cracks evident in the facade: the disapproving comments about modern media; the passive-aggressive way in which the emotionally distant Jake talks down to a female employee; and the absence of a presiding maternal figure.
When his daughter, Kristen (Ilah Davis), inexplicably goes missing on a church trip to California, Jake is determined to track her down with the help of Andy Mast (Peter Boyle), a morally...

Last year, we lost Goodfellas star Ray Liotta, who passed away in his sleep at the age of 67. Now Deadline has shared a previously unreleased interview they conducted with Liotta a couple years before he died – and during the interview, Liotta mentioned that he felt stupid for turning down a role in director Tim Burton‘s 1989 version of Batman.
Batman first came up when Liotta was talking about writer/director Noah Baumbach’s Netflix-released film Marriage Story, which he had a role in. He said, “They started with the Batman stuff and triggered the whole comic book genre, and now most of the studios are putting an unbelievable amount of money into things like that. But movies like this one, Marriage Story… Thank God for Netflix, because they’ll finance your movie. I don’t know who else would give money for Marriage Story. It’s a great movie,...

1984’s Conan the Destroyer was an attempt to soften Arnold Schwarzenegger’s titular barbarian into a PG-rated fantasy film hero. The result was a movie that was only a middling success in theaters, being overshadowed by Arnold’s other big 1984 movie, James Cameron’s The Terminator. Conan the Destroyer proved to be the last time Arnie would play Robert E. Howard’s Cimmerian icon, and in the decades since its release the movie’s reputation has been pretty atrocious. Hardcore fans prefer John Millius’s darker, R-rated Conan the Barbarian to Richard Fleischer’s lighter, family friendly version which seemed to owe a lot more to eighties fantasy movies like The Beastmaster than Millius’s original. It’s a deeply silly film, and one of the cheapest Schwarzenegger’s films of the eighties, with him essentially forced into making this and the following year’s Red Sonja to fulfil a...

One of independent film’s key players, Ray Price, died July 16 at the age of 75 from heart failure after a long battle with cancer, his long-term partner Meg Madison confirmed.
Talking to Price about movies, past and present, was an exhilarating sport that could take a while. He knew his stuff — no one loved movies more — but more than anyone during the great indie decades of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, he was a respected innovator who thought outside the box. He began as an exhibitor in San Francisco and moved on to marketing, releasing, and distributing movies, leaning toward the outrageous in how he lured audiences to sample challenging fare.
“Ray, while being a defiantly singular individual, was also emblematic of a bygone age of independent film,” Magnolia Pictures co-ceo Eamonn Bowles wrote me in an email. “From theatre chain owner to distributor, exquisite marketer, and production exec, he...

1982's Conan the Barbarian was a surprise hit for Universal Pictures, putting star Arnold Schwarzenegger on the map and launching a wave of swords-and-sorcery movies throughout the 1980s. Even more impressive, it's gone on to become a fantasy classic, with Schwarzenegger periodically lobbying director John Milius to make another sequel with him. The same can't be said for most of the swords-and-sorcery movies that followed it. The sub-genre was a shabby one, to begin with, with quality taking a sharp dip in the wake of Conan the Barbarian's success.
But the ultimate failure of the sub-genre lies less in the quality of the product than in the lessons Hollywood took from Conan. They proved not only wrong but utterly oblivious to the roiling changes in the industry. In the simplest terms, while Conan the Barbarian made money, the powers that be felt it didn't make enough money and altered subsequent efforts accordingly.

Batman's villains have not just gone after Gotham City's population, but have occasionally targeted each other in the Dark Knight's movie and TV adventures. When it comes to superheroes, Batman has one of the greatest rogue's galleries of all. Villains like the Joker, the Riddler, Two-Face, the Penguin, Ra's Al Ghul, and Bane have all given Batman tremendous challenges in the comics, and these battles have also frequently been translated to the big and small screens.
However, Batman's villains have not always been content to merely fight the Caped Crusader in his various cinematic and television adaptations. Some of the Dark Knight's villains in movies and on TV have turned their sights towards other villains, being motivated by vengeance, competing criminal interests, or a combination of the two. Here are five Batman movie and TV villains who have killed other villains, and why they did so.

The 1996 version of Matilda counts on the talents of various well-known actors, but is Pee-wee Herman also part of the cast of Matilda? Roald Dahl wrote a variety of stories, with many becoming classics of children’s literature, among them the 1988 novel Matilda. The popularity of Matilda has been such that it has been adapted to other media, including a two-part radio program, a stage musical, and a film adaptation of the musical. In 1996, Matilda made the jump to the big screen, with Danny DeVito as director and Mara Wilson playing the title character.
Matilda tells the story of the title character, a child prodigy who is neglected by her parents and tormented at school by the tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris). Matilda gradually realizes that she has psychokinetic abilities, and she starts to use these to deal with her abusive parents, Harry (DeVito) and Zinnia Wormwood (Rhea Perlman), and Miss Trunchbull.

The most memorable line in 1989's "Batman" is undoubtedly Michael Keaton's delivery of "I'm Batman." Growled in the opening moments as Batman dangles a thug off a Gotham high-rise, it's become as legendary a moment as any in the Dark Knight's cinematic saga. Since then, Batman movies have provided a steady stream of memorable quotes, from Christian Bale's snarling, "Swear to me" in "Batman Begins" to Robert Pattinson's emo Batman announcing "I'm Vengeance" in "The Batman."
But Tim Burton's "Batman" is notable for the sheer amount of quotable lines it packed into its 126 minutes. Alongside, "I'm Batman," which Keaton revived for his return as the Dark Knight in "The Flash" trailer, there's the moment Jack Nicholson's Joker famously wonders out loud about his nemesis' gadgets, "Where does he get those wonderful toys?" In fact, screenwriter Sam Hamm gave The Joker plenty of delectable lines,...

Out on the edge of the Mojave Desert, a cop pulls over a speeder. Arrogantly approaching the apprehended speeder's car, he casually asks the driver what's in the trunk. The driver (Fox Harris) ominously replies, "You don't want to look in there." This, of course, makes the cop suspicious, so he decides to look anyway. When the trunk swings open, a horrifying red light spills out. The cop attempts to shield his eyes, but the red light quickly vaporizes his body. Only the cop's boots are left behind, his smoking remains dispersing into the desert breezes. The speeder pulls away.

Many gangland parodies fall flat, but not Jonathan Demme’s marvelous combo of high spirits and murder. Mafia spouse Angela de Marco’s story is goofy comedy with an edge of economic reality: how does one newly-impoverished New Yawk dame make a living for her orphaned son, while avoiding the adulterous attentions of the Big Boss who had her husband iced? Michelle Pfeiffer came into her own, Dean Stockwell has his best adult role and Matthew Modine is uniquely charming as an amorous FBI agent. The tonal balance is abetted by a supporting performances that go every which way: Mercedes Ruehl, Alec Baldwin, Oliver Platt and a slew of Demme regulars. Plus a music score by David Byrne. The disc features three new video interviews.

Steve McQueen’s final film is an action-comedy compromise that will satisfy his fans even if it barely hangs together. The thrills are kinder & gentler, with plenty of hair-raising stunts but less gunplay and gore. McQueen’s eccentric bounty hunter collects toys and can barely drive a car, but he always gets his man. Kathryn Harrold is good; Eli Wallach, LeVar Burton, Ben Johnson, Richard Venture and Tracey Walter are along for the ride (and stay out of Steve’s spotlight). Steve’s in charge — he tailors everything to highlight his quirky star characterization, and the guiding principle is ‘low key.’

The best horror film of the 1990s and perhaps the only serial killer picture post- Psycho that can stand on equal terms with Hitchcock’s classic, Jonathan Demme and Ted Tally’s adaptation of the Thomas Harris novel is a standout experience in every way. Not all 4K Ultra HD encodings are worth crowing about but this one is — the added visual detail and especially the contrast range really make a difference. Kino offers a good selection of extras as well, including a teaser trailer I haven’t seen for years and a fine Tim Lucas commentary.

There are individuals that excel at playing the sidekick, the henchman, or just the creepy-looking character that stands out when they allow themselves to be known. Through no fault of their own, or perhaps on purpose, they end up becoming awkward and take on the role of being the strange but somehow endearing characters that people might laugh at but still believe have some use. Tracey Walter is one such character that’s been around since the 70s and has excelled in the awkward roles that have painted him as the kind of guy that you might feel is a bit

Here’s a story about a different kind of ‘lockdown.’ This near-perfect Americana drama might be the real pinnacle of Sissy Spacek’s wonderful career. The no-baloney tale of rural life on the Texas coastline during WW2 is packed with strong emotions and solid sentiment. Wartime hardship and catch-as-catch-can romance strike an uneasy balance with more threatening material, including a highly suspenseful finish. First-time director Jack Fisk hits this one out of the park, with help from Eric Roberts, William Sanderson, Tracey Walter, R.G. Armstrong, Sam Shepard and little Henry Thomas. This is one of those special pictures that creates a warm feeling about people. The ‘Rum and Coca Cola’ scene is perfection of a special kind.

A story of murders in the ER becomes, courtesy of writer Paddy Chayefsky, either a preview of social breakdown or an impassioned examination of why we invest our lives and souls in imperfect institutions. George C. Scott is the doctor coming apart at the seams, who meets his match in a New Age hippie from a New Mexico commune. My instinct is that such a person would not look like Diana Rigg, but everybody needs a dream girl.

It's been three long years since director Rob Zombie's last movie, The Lords of Salem, but for those awaiting this horror filmmaker's return, you won't have to wait much longer. The musician brings his unique vision back to the big screen with his new horror-thriller 31, debuting on VOD platforms September 16 before hitting theaters on October 21. Just one month after the first trailer and poster debuted, four new character posters have arrived.
These one-sheets, which come courtesy of Saban Films, offer new looks at four unique characters, Doom-Head (Richard Brake), Psycho-Head (Lew Temple), Father Murder (Malcolm McDowell) and Charly (Sheri Moon Zombie). Writer-director Rob Zombie introduced Doom-Head to fans with a photo he released last year, with the director predicting that he will be the next great horror villain. The director also described this crazed character as "one intense dude."

Last week, Saban Films debuted a new poster for director Rob Zombie's upcoming horror-thriller 31, which will hit theaters just before Halloween. Today, the studio has unveiled the first full trailer for this highly-anticipated movie, which comes nearly two years after the first trailer was released. Now that the project has distribution and a release date in place, we can surely expect to see much more from 31 in the months ahead.
From the visionary mind of the man who brought us House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects and Halloween comes the horrific story of five carnival workers who are kidnapped the night before Halloween and held hostage in a large compound. At the mercy of their captors, they are forced to play a twisted game or life or death called 31. For the next 12 hours they must fight for their lives against an endless parade of homicidal maniacs.
31 stars Rob Zombie's wife Sheri Moon Zombie, along with Richard Brake, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Jeffrey Daniel Phillips, Lew Temple, Meg Foster and Malcolm McDowell. The supporting cast includes Elizabeth Daily, Daniel Roebuck, Tracey Walter, Ginger Lynn-Allen, Judy Geeson, Torsten Vorges, Jane Carr and Jeffrey Daniel Phillips. Richard Brake's character Doom-head has been called the next great horror villain by the director, but we'll have to wait and see how audiences respond to this character.
Rob Zombie is directing from his own screenplay and producing with Andy Gould, Matthew Perniciaro, Michael Sherman, Eddie Vaisman and Mike Elliott. Saban Films has set an October 21 release date for 31, putting this movie in a highly-competitive weekend where six other movies are currently slated to open in wide release. Also opening on October 21 is Paramount's Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Lionsgate's horror-comedy Boo! A Madea Halloween, 20th Century Fox's comedy Keeping Up With the Joneses, Focus Features' A Monster Calls, Universal's Ouija: Origin of Evil and PureFlix's drama I'm Not Ashamed.
31 was originally slapped with an Nc-17 rating by the MPAA back in December 2015, and even after Rob Zombie submitted a re-edited cut, the MPAA still gave the film an Nc-17 rating. After another round of edits, the MPAA finally gave the movie an R rating this past January, for "strong bloody horror violence, pervasive language, sexual content and drug use." It's possible that Rob Zombie will release a gore drenched director's cut sometime in the future. Until then, check out the new trailer for Rob Zombie's 31.

Sick-Head is the type of killer Jeff Daniel Phillips' Roscoe will have to fend off to survive the creepy confines of Murder World.
In April, Zombie's 31 was acquired for North American distribution by Alchemy. No release date has been revealed yet, but we'll keep Daily Dead readers updated on Zombie's latest movie, which features a talented cast that includes Malcolm McDowell, Sheri Moon Zombie, Lawrence Hitlon-Jacobs, Lew Temple, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Tracey Walter,...

With Rob Zombie's upcoming film 31 taking place in a setting known as "Murder World", you can expect to find plenty of malevolent monsters (of the human variety) around every corner, as evidenced in the latest still from the film, which shows someone who looks like they came from Dr. Frankenstein's lab.
Revealed by Bloody Disgusting, the new still from Rob Zombie's 31 features a very memorable member of the Murder World proceedings. Though the official cast member and character in the still haven't been announced, there are physical similarities between this character and Richard Brake's Doom-Head, who was revealed in a shadow-shrouded still in March, so they very well could be one and the same.
