Now streaming on Screambox is the festival hit The Wolf Hour, a psychological thriller that takes place during the summer of the Son of Sam murders.
The Ring‘s Naomi Watts stars in the film as June Leigh, “a cultural icon and activist during the 1960s, now fallen from grace and a shell of her former self. An unseen tormentor begins exploiting her weaknesses and she must face her demons at the height of one of the darkest points in New York history: the summer of the Son of Sam murders.”
From writer-director Alistair Banks Griffin, The Wolf Hour actually filmed in New York with the trailer oozing Hitchcock, especially Rear Window, and promises one helluva tense-filled thriller.
Meredith Borders gave the film a positive review out of the Sundance World Premiere, noting that the “Hitchcockian” thriller is “grimy, tense and menacing.”
Check it out on Screambox.

There’s some exciting buzz for all Game of Thrones, and George R.R. Martin fans out there. According to Deadline, Warner Bros. might create a new movie set in the Game of Thrones universe. Nothing’s official yet; Warner Bros. hasn’t confirmed a thing, and Deadline has no details on who’s involved creatively or how closely it might connect to the hit HBO series. But, fingers crossed, we might get another adventure in Westeros.
Game of Thrones was a massive hit for HBO, capturing audiences worldwide. Initially, the showrunners behind the series had plans to wrap up the story with a trilogy of movies, giving the franchise a big-screen sendoff. HBO's megahit series "Game of Thrones" was so successful that there's been a nonstop churn of spinoffs in development ever since it ended. Now, though, something different is stirring: a "Game of Thrones" movie. According to the Hollywood Reporter, HBO has been "quietly developing at least one film" set in the historical fantasy world created by author George R.R. Martin. There are currently no writers, directors, or cast members attached to the project(s), nor any specifics about the story, but there's certainly no shortage of source material.
This isn't the first time the possibility of movies has been floated. Martin said in 2014 that ideas like a big screen conclusion for "Game of Thrones" were being "actively discussed," and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss wanted to wrap up the series with a movie trilogy.
HBO's parent company is Warner Bros. Discovery, which has become focused on straddling its franchises across film and television.

Favorite long-term celebrity couples like Ryan Gosling-Eva Mendes, David and Victorian Beckham, Ryan Reynolds-Blake Lively, and Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn make us believe in love for their enduring commitment and the rose-tinted view they allow us to have into their personal lives. But such relationships have always been a double-edged sword for the parties involved.
For high-profile couples like Channing Tatum and Zoë Kravitz, the drama exceeds far beyond the actors themselves, breaking the hearts of fans mourning the end of a so-called “perfect” relationship.

The new play Left on Tenth is now open on Broadway!
Lead stars Julianna Margulies and Peter Gallagher walked the red carpet together at the opening night performance on Wednesday (October 23) at the James Earl Jones Theater in New York City.
Left on Tenth, based on Delia Ephron‘s memoir, is a romantic comedy about second chances in life and love. When she least expects it, Delia, beloved novelist and screenwriter of You’ve Got Mail, makes a surprising connection with a man from her past and falls into her own romantic comedy. What starts with an unlikely spark blossoms into a love story that seems to defy all odds in the face of life’s challenges.
Peter‘s daughter Kathryn Gallagher, a Tony-nominated and Grammy-winning actress who can be seen in Netflix’s new movie Woman of the Hour, walked the carpet after writing an emotional post on Instagram.

I was not surprised when Naomi Watts co-hosted This Is the Swell’s 3rd Annual Menopause Symposium over the weekend as part of the Menopause Awareness Month celebration.
Watts has always been vocal about her struggles with perimenopause and menopause and her desire to create a community where women’s voices are heard to eliminate the stigma attached to menopause.
The 56-year-old actress wore a muted off-white outfit, incorporating her signature feminine, sophisticated, yet casual style with a dash of sass and edge from her accessories.

One of the only bad things about attending a festival like TIFF is that so many great-looking movies play that it’s too easy to miss more than a few. One of the movies I tried hardest to fit into my schedule – to no avail – was The Friend, starring Naomi Watts and Bill Murray. Directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, the film is an adaptation of a book by Sigrid Nunez that focuses on a woman trying to come to terms with the death of her friend and mentor. Complicating matters is that the woman’s also been left custody of her deceased friend’s beloved Great Dane, an unwieldy pet for her tiny New York apartment.
While it earned very solid reviews at TIFF, it wasn’t one of the films that got snapped up right away for distribution. However, Bleecker Street has now stepped in to acquire The Friend,...

The fall festival season has wrapped up! Each year, dozens of movies premiere at festivals with distributors looking to launch them before they’re released in theaters or on streaming services. But dozens more are independent films without distribution that came to the festivals looking to be discovered. This year, over 200 movies made their world premieres across the Venice Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, the Telluride Film Festival, and the New York Film Festival, and we’ve seen some big name movie sales across all four.
Right as Venice got underway, we saw U.S. deals for two of the biggest competition titles on the slate, Pablo Larraín’s “Maria” to Netflix and Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” to A24. A24 also picked up the rights to Venice Silver Lion winner “The Brutalist” in a competitive situation. And some of the hottest discoveries like “Nutcrackers,” “September 5,” and TIFF Audience...

Bleecker Street has taken North American rights to the Scott McGehee and David Siegel directed and written feature, The Friend, starring Naomi Watts, Bill Murray and a Great Dane named Bing. A 2025 theatrical release is planned.
The film marks Bleecker Street’s second collaboration with Siegel & McGehee, having handled the US release of their 2021 neo-Western drama Montana Story, starring Haley Lu Richardson and Owen Teague.
In The Friend, writer and teacher Iris (Watts) finds her comfortable, solitary New York life thrown into disarray after her closest friend and mentor (Murray) dies suddenly and bequeaths her his beloved 150 lb. The regal yet intractable beast, named Apollo, immediately creates practical problems for Iris, from furniture destruction to eviction notices, as well as more existential ones, his looming presence constantly reminding her of her friend’s problematic choices in both life and death. Naomi Watts and a very big dog are heading to cinemas.
“The Friend,” a touching drama about a writer and editor whose literary mentor commits suicide and leaves her with his Great Dane to care for, has been acquired by Bleecker Street. The indie studio has nabbed North American distribution rights for an undisclosed sum — the sale took some time, which is something of a surprise given that “The Friend” received strong reviews when it showed at fall film festivals like Telluride and Toronto. It’s another reminder that studios are being more cautious when it comes to buying projects post-covid. The indie and arthouse theatrical market is still struggling to fully rebound from pandemic disruptions.
“The Friend” was written and directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, the team behind “The Deep End” and “What Maisie Knew,” and co-stars Bill Murray, Sarah Pidgeon, Carla Gugino, Constance Wu, Noma Dumezweni and Ann Dowd.

The Friend, a grief drama from writer/directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel about a writer mourning her late pal while dealing with the Great Dane dog he left behind, and starring Naomi Watts and Bill Murray, has been picked up by Bleecker Street.
Having taken the North American rights to the pic, Bleecker plans an early 2025 theatrical release for the adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s novel. At this year’s Mipcom, where Spain is the Country of Honor, Spanish director J.A. Bayona hosted a masterclass in which he talked about inspiration, anchoring his stories in a moment and the importance of improvisation.
Early on, Bayona was asked to talk through his creative process, from picking a project to writing to filming and everything in between. According to the director, the first step is finding something that resonates with him and anchoring everything else he does to that point.
“I need to feel a connection to a feeling idea that resonates with me. That’s something that, if it’s strong enough, will last the process of making a film, which is a very long and sometimes painful process. Sofia Vergara has played some insanely iconic roles over the years but she’s most known for playing the incredibly naive and yet feisty Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on Modern Family. This project helped the 52-year-old find a place in the industry, which also eventually kickstarted the launch of various business ventures that helped her become one of the most successful actresses today.

Despite being booked for roles in successful movies such as The Smurfs, Chef, and Despicable Me, while being recruited as a judge on America’s Got Talent, Vergara had one story that captured her heart, the story of Griselda Blanco, a Columbian drug lord.
Vergara ultimately turned it into a passion project and approached Narcos’ Eric Newman to produce the show with Netflix. Little did she know, Griselda would lead to one of her life’s lowest points.

Writer-director duo Scott McGehee and David Siegel have been working together for 30 years, since their debut thrilled Suture in 1994. Since then, they’ve only made seven films, with their latest being The Friend, a comedy-drama adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s award-winning novel. Starring Naomi Watts and a Great Dane named Bing, the film follows a woman grieving the suicide of her friend, mentor, and lover, spending the immediate aftermath with his dog who is now in her care. It’s a light film, deriving much of its emotional core from Bing, a dog with great big eyes to match his great big size. The film hinges on moments between Watts and her new pet, silences in which the two share a special bond of mourning.

Gabriel Sherman has been at the forefront of reporting on the rise of the right-wing media. His coverage of the Murdoch family infighting makes “Succession” look like a documentary, and his chronicling of the rise of Fox News, coupled with reporting that brought the fall of its architect Roger Ailes, is the stuff of Greek tragedy.
In addition to being a well-sourced reporter, Sherman is a writer with a knack for narrative, with a keen eye for how human frailty mixed with greed and power have created such destructive forces on our society. Therefore, it’s not surprising that in recent years Sherman started to develop non-fiction scripted projects in Hollywood, most notably the Russell Crowe-led adaptation of his Roger Ailes biography into the Showtime limited series “The Loudest Voice.”

Naomi Watts made a striking appearance alongside her son, Sasha Schreiber, 17, on the red carpet of the premiere of her new film, The Friend, in New York City. The pair sported matching all-black looks, and the teenager’s growth was on full display as he stood noticeably taller than his mother. It marked a rare public appearance for Sasha.
The 55-year-old actress, known for her roles in films such as The Impossible and King Kong, looked elegant in a black strapless dress featuring a sheer bodice with a corset-like design and a glossy, structured skirt. She completed the look with pointed black heels and statement earrings, adding to the glamorous ensemble.
However, Sasha’s height caught the attention of fans and photographers. He wore a sleek black suit paired with a simple black shirt, opting for a laid-back yet polished look that further emphasized his towering presence.

While Europe has always lured Hollywood filmmakers, there are more opportunities today for transatlantic collaborations due to a number of factors, according to leading European industry reps taking part in the Zurich Summit on Saturday.
Outlining the many advantages and unique opportunities Europe offers at the Zurich Film Festival’s industry forum were Goodfellas’ Vincent Maraval, Mediawan Pictures CEO Elisabeth d’Arvieu, Constantin exec Martin Bachmann, Fremantle’s Christian Vesper and Karl Spoerri of Zurich Avenue.
While collaborations have always existed between the European industry and American filmmakers who wanted to do different kinds of films, the current situation has created more opportunities, Maraval said.
U.S. studios are becoming “more and more conservative,” he pointed out, adding that for creators today who feel frustrated or are looking for more freedom and more creativity, it’s easier to travel and work elsewhere.

Independent filmmaking duo Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s The Friend, their newest in a 30-year collaboration, is a dog movie. Or, more aptly, it’s a film about a dog and Iris (Naomi Watts), a woman who hates dogs. Iris inherits a Great Dane, Apollo, from her late friend, mentor, and lover Walter (Bill Murray). The movie, adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s National Book Award-winning novel of the same name, is light to the touch, despite its themes of grief, suicide, and depression. It’s the type of film my parents would love––something shown on a cable network on a Sunday afternoon, easy to watch with just enough substance to make the audience feel something reminiscent of sadness. That’s a compliment, though: The Friend reminds us of the immeasurable role that dogs, and pets, play in our lives.

“All I can tease about it — I read the first two scripts — is that it’s going to be incredibly sexy, it’s going to be really fun, and there’s already a yummy text chain that’s happening with all of us girls that’s really fun,” Paulson said.
Murphy describes All’s Fair as “a high-end, glossy and sexy adult procedural.” The legal drama, penned by Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken, is set in an all-female law firm.
The cast of All’s Fair also includes Glenn Close, Niecy Nash, Teyana Taylor, and Naomi Watts. Kardashian, Paulson, Nash, and Watts will also be the executive producers.

After the death of her friend Walter, Iris is thrust into caring for Apollo, a Great Dane of considerable size. Walter had been a beloved friend, mentor, and perhaps even something more to Iris during their time together. Now gone, Walter leaves behind a complicated legacy along with one final request: for Iris to take in Apollo, unable to care for the dog himself.
While Iris lives alone in New York and considers herself more of a cat person, she feels compelled to honor Walter’s wishes at least temporarily. What begins as an inconvenience soon reveals deeper layers as Iris comes to understand the bond between her and Apollo goes beyond any formal arrangement. Both are processing their feelings of loss and emptiness left from Walter’s absence in parallel ways.

New York film festival: an adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s bestselling 2018 novel about a woman dealing with her friend’s suicide is tender and well-acted, if a little messy
It takes a certain type of person to have a dog in New York City, let alone a 180lb, questionably behaved one. Iris, played with a natural grace by Naomi Watts in The Friend, is not that type of person. She is a mostly solitary writer in a small – at least, to the eyes of her more accomplished peers – apartment in the West Village, whose schedule is at the whims of her teaching work and sputtering attempts at a novel. She has settled into an independent rhythm of middle-aged singledom in the city. Also, she prefers cats. Nevertheless, she finds herself caring for Apollo, her late best friend Walter’s (Bill Murray) beloved great dane, after his suicide.
