Exclusive: Apple TV+ has extended its first-look deal with Oscar-nominated producer Kevin Walsh and his The Walsh Company shingle, to continue to develop and produce original films and series for the service.
This is a sweeter deal, and positions Walsh to become a bigger supplier for Apple’s slate of originals. It comes after Walsh produced Apple Original Films’ The Instigators, which launched as the most-watched movie on Apple TV+; and the Ridley Scott-directed Napoleon. Up next is another Apple original, Echo Valley, a Michael Pearce-directed thriller that stars Julianne Moore alongside Sydney Sweeney from an original screenplay by Brad Ingelsby. Produced by The Walsh Company and Scott Free Films, that film debuts next year.
Walsh is also in the middle of a potential sequel to The Instigators, sorting it out with Apple, director Doug Liman, co-writers Casey Affleck and Chuck MacLean and Artists Equity partners Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Apple Original Films wants audiences to experience Ridley Scott’s Napoleon like never before with Napoleon: The Director’s Cut, now streaming on Apple TV+. The Director’s Cut includes 48 minutes of new, never-before-seen footage from Scott’s historical epic, which stars Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.
In addition to marching on $221M+ at the worldwide box office, Ridley Scott’s Napoleon received three Academy Award nominations for Best Achievement in Visual Effects, Best Achievement in Production Design, and Best Achievement in Costume Design. In addition to a stand-out performance by Vanessa Kirby as Josephine Bonaparte, Napoleon features visual spectacles when recreating some of the French military strategist’s most devious attacks. The Battle of Austerlitz is particularly brutal, with Napoleon baiting his enemies onto a partially frozen body of water and then destroying the surface with heavy artillery.

Like Doug Liman’s recent Amazon remake of Road House, his latest streaming effort The Instigators quite frankly misses its calling. Both films should have had wide theatrical runs before hitting the services. They are the kinds of films that are fun to watch with a crowd.
Nevertheless, other than a nominal week in limited release, The Instigators will hit Apple TV+’s home audience on August 9. Still, I have to say Apple has turned out a number of streaming attractions that are a cut above, and this is yet another example. With a grade-a cast led by Matt Damon (who is also a producer with partner Ben Affleck) and Casey Affleck (who co-wrote the script with Chuck MacLean), this is pure, often riotously funny summer entertainment, a perfect blend of genres from action to comedy to crime, not a minute of it to be taken seriously.

Apple TV+ has dropped this first trailer for the comedy heist thriller The Instigators starring Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, Hong Chau, Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, Toby Jones, with Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman.
Directed by Doug Liman and written by Chuck MacLean and Casey Affleck, check out this first look now.
Rory (Matt Damon) and Cobby (Casey Affleck) are reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to pull off a robbery of the ill-gained earnings of a corrupt politician. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by police, but also backwards bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses. Completely out of their depth, they convince Rory’s therapist (Hong Chau) to join their riotous getaway through the city, where they must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture—or worse.

Those who may be clamoring for a new Ocean’s film can somewhat get their wishes fulfilled this year with two movies featuring the Steven Soderbergh caper alums. While George Clooney and Brad Pitt reunite for some criminal hijinks in AppleTV+’s Wolfs, similarly, their fellow Ocean’s Eleven/Twelve/Thirteen co-stars also reunite for a crime comedy, which happens to be about a heist. Apple has just released the trailer for The Instigators, which finds Matt Damon and Casey Affleck attempting to rob a bigwig in Boston.
The official synopsis reads,
“Rory (Matt Damon) and Cobby (Casey Affleck) are reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to pull off a robbery of the ill-gained earnings of a corrupt politician. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by police, but also backwards bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses.

Matt Damon is partnering up with Affleck once again — no, not Ben.
This time, it’s Ben’s younger brother Casey Affleck who co-stars in “The Instigators,” which he also co-wrote with Chuck MacLean. Affleck stars as Cobby, an ex-con who has to work with his ex-military, currently-desperate father Rory (Damon) to rob a corrupt politician’s ill-gained earnings. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by police but also by backward bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses. Completely out of their depth, they convince Rory’s therapist (Hong Chau) to join their riotous getaway through the city, where they must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture — or worse.
Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Toby Jones co-star, with singer Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman also appearing.

The stars and artists behind the biggest films of 2023 descended on London this weekend for the BAFTA Film Awards. British film’s biggest night is often seen as the best predictor of Oscar momentum before the Academy Awards and the results often mirror each other.
If that’s the case this year, it will be all “Oppenheimer” all the time. Universal’s Christopher Nolan epic took home many of the night’s biggest categories, winning the top prize of Best Film along with Best Director for Nolan, Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. The film also picked up major craft wins for Cinematography, Editing, and Original Score.
While the dominant showing makes an “Oppenheimer” Oscar sweep seem even more likely, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” won for Costume Design, Makeup & Hair, Production Design, and Visual Effects, and star Emma Stone won Leading Actress for her...

“Poor Things” has performed well throughout this awards season, winning Best Comedy/Musical Film at the Golden Globes and snagging 11 Oscar nominations in total. That is the same number of awards the Searchlight Pictures movie was nominated for at the BAFTAs, where we predict it to perform well.
One person who is set to have a good night at the British film awards is Tony McNamara, who adapted Alasdair Gray‘s 1992 novel of the same name. McNamara previously worked with Emma Stone on “Cruella” and “The Favourite,” the latter of which was another Yorgos Lanthimos film. McNamara co-wrote that period piece with Deborah Davis. Ridley Scott came, he saw, he conquered. The legendary director's "Napoleon" might not be a box office hit in the traditional sense, but it was a generally successful experiment in theatrical releases for Apple. Not only that, it might even prove to be the first of many such releases for the tech giant going forward.
"Napoleon" itself was more of a mixed bag, so far as the theatrical cut is concerned. As Chris Evangelista noted in his review for /Film, the version released in theaters plays like "a CliffsNotes tour through the life of Napoleon Bonaparte," racing through major events in the infamous French emperor and military commander's life at a breakneck speed. As for what it does leave in, well, a lot of it is not only historically inaccurate but -- perhaps more importantly -- it's also just less interesting than what happened in real life.

Studios are snapping up projects left and right before the end of the year, and now 20th Studios is getting in on the action. After a heated auction, the studio bought the rights to Kevin McMullin’s short story Bomb. The story lights the fuse for an action thriller with franchise potential, and Ridley Scott is coming aboard to direct. In addition to getting behind the camera, Ridley Scott’s production company, Scott Free, will produce Bomb. Exclusive: Warner Bros has won a week long auction for Calamity Hustle, the action comedy that will star Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum. Adam & Aaron Nee wrote the script, and they will direct. All the studios were in on this, but it came down to Amazon, Netflix and Warner Bros. Led by production chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, Warner Bros stepped up for the kind of star-driven movie that fueled the studio’s fortunes back in the day.
The spec is likened in tone to the mismatched buddy actioner like Lethal Weapon, and the hope is to launch a franchise. Reynolds will play a cop who is estranged from his low level criminal brother (Tatum). They grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, and went in the opposite direction. When bro is implicated as part of a diamond heist, the cop must hunt him down before those he ripped off.

In 2015, producer Kevin J. Walsh was clearing out a last-minute parking lot location for Manchester by the Sea’s most memorable scene, and just seven years later, he found himself on one of several battlefields that would define Ridley Scott’s latest historical epic, Napoleon.
Financed by Apple Original Films and distributed by Sony, the Joaquin Phoenix-led film just outperformed expectations with $32.7 million over the five-day Thanksgiving window, and Walsh believes that Napoleon’s production and distribution arrangement is the ideal way forward for streamers who want to make big-budget plays. With the possible exception of Netflix, the remaining streamers haven’t been able to justify the expense of streaming-exclusive blockbusters, but Napoleon has now established that streaming services and traditional studios can work together in mutually beneficial ways.

Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” will have an opportunity to conquer more than just western movie theaters. Apple TV+ announced Thursday night that the historical epic will debut in Chinese theaters on Dec. 1.
That’s just under two weeks after November 22 release of “Napoleon” in U.S. theaters.
Written by David Scarpa, “Napoleon” stars Joaquin Phoenix in a story charting the general’s history changing career — from his unlikely rise to power amid the chaotic post-revolutionary period in France, to his rein as emperor when he was hailed as a hero by his supporters and viewed as the terror of Europe by everyone else, to his downfall — alongside his tumultuous personal life. Vanessa Kirby co-stars as Napoleon’s first wife Josephine.

Holding the world premiere of Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” in Paris was a no-brainer for Sony’s motion picture group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman, due to the film’s French DNA and its subject, the famous French emperor (played by Joaquin Phoenix).
“Where else could you begin the worldwide rollout of ‘Napoleon’ than France?,” said Rothman on the red carpet of the event at the Salle Pleyel concert hall, where Phoenix, Vanessa Kirby and Tahar Rahim were able to attend thanks to the end of the 118-day SAG-AFTRA strike.
But the French theatrical bow comes with a downside for Apple, which financed the pricey movie and will now have to wait 17 months to launch the movie on its service due to France’s strict windowing rules.
“It’s a great credit to Apple who made the film because this particular movie (…) is a big screen experience,” said Rothman. “It...

Napoleon Bonaparte is known for being many things: Warrior, General, Tyrant, Genius, Rebel. Take your pick! For Ridley Scott’s new film, Napoleon, Joaquin Phoenix brings many shades of Bonaparte’s reputation to light, highlighting the complex historical figure’s faults and strategic erudition. Today, Columbia Pictures debuted a new clip from Napoleon featuring the Battle of Austerlitz, aka the Battle of Three Emperors.
The footage finds Phoenix’s Napoleon taking the high ground, looking down on his enemies with disdain and menacing intent. As both sides of the conflict converge, Napoleon waits for his adversaries to make a grave mistake. Once carefully chosen battlefield positions reveal themselves, Napoleon’s enemies discover they’re traversing a frozen body of water. Before they can retreat to safety, Napoleon unleashes hell in the form of cannon balls pointed directly at the frigid lakebed. As the artillery pierces the ice, soldiers fall to their deaths,...

Here’s your first look at the brand new trailer for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby.
For Scott, reuniting with Phoenix for the first time since Gladiator was an immense pleasure. “He’s the only actor where we talk for weeks beforehand, just chatting and arguing in an office over aspects of the character. At the end, we are on the same page,” says Scott. “He’s good for me, because he keeps me honest, and I’m good for him, because I keep him in line. Physically, he’s perfect for the role – some of his facial features are strikingly similar to Napoleon’s.”

A new trailer for Ridley Scott’s upcoming historical epic “Napoleon” has arrived, and this one seems to telegraph the “Gladiator” and “Blade Runner” filmmaker’s modern approach to the story of the French leader.
A variation of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” plays throughout the trailer, which introduces Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix’s take on Napoleon Bonaparte sans French accent. Scott made the decision to have all of his actors use their real accents (Vanessa Kirby uses her English accent while playing Bonparte’s wife Josephine), so Phoenix’s take on Bonaparte is decidedly American.
Written by David Scarpa, “Napoleon” is Scott’s return to the historical epic genre, familiar territory for him. Aside from Best Picture winner “Gladiator,” Scott also steered 1992’s “1492” and his 2005 film about the crusades, “Kingdom of Heaven,” only gained esteem when his superior director’s cut was released on home video.

Movies about the infamous French military commander Napoleon Bonaparte have always been massive undertakings. After all, the wars and battles he unleashed were some of the biggest and deadliest in European military history. You can't exactly be frugal when adapting these battles to the big screen, and since they're such a significant part of Bonaparte's legacy, you shouldn't even think of skipping them. This is partially why Stanley Kubrick's biopic of the commander wound up in development hell and never found its way out during his lifetime.
However, it seems Ridley Scott has finally done what was previously thought to be nearly impossible: He has directed a biographical action epic based on Bonaparte's life, simply titled "Napoleon," and it is coming out later this year. Starring Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix as the commander, it marks the actor's first collaboration with Scott since their acclaimed team-up on 2000's "Gladiator." While...

Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney are teaming up for Apple Films’ Echo Valley. The duo will play a mother and daughter in the feature, which has a screenplay from Brad Ingelsby, the creator of HBO’s Mare of Easttown.
Michael Pearce, who won a BAFTA for Beast, will direct Echo Valley, which counts Ridley Scott as a producer.
Echo Valley centers on Kate Garrett (Moore), who is reeling from a personal tragedy and spending her days boarding and training horses at the picturesque Echo Valley Farm, located in southeast Pennsylvania. Ingelsby, who developed the story with Michael Pruss, earned acclaim for his crime limited series Mare of Easttown, which won four Emmys and became a breakout show for HBO.

Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney are gearing up to play a mother-daughter duo in “Echo Valley,” an Apple Studios feature from “Mare of Easttown” creator Brad Ingelsby.

Apple Original Films have set up the new film Echo Valley from a script by Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby with Sydney Sweeney and Julianne Moore attached to star. Hailing from Apple Studios, and produced by Scott Free Films and The Walsh Company, the film will be directed by Michael Pearce.
The pic will star Moore as ‘Kate Garrett,’ who is reeling from a personal tragedy and spends her days boarding and training horses at Echo Valley Farm, twenty-two secluded, picturesque acres in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Late one night, her wayward daughter, ‘Claire’ (played by Sweeney), arrives at her doorstep, frightened, trembling, and covered in someone else’s blood. From that simple premise, Echo Valley becomes a heart-pounding thriller about just how far a mother will go to save her child.
