Thomas Cailley’s supernatural drama “The Animal Kingdom” and Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winner “Anatomy of a Fall” are leading the race at the 49th Cesar Awards with 12 and 11 nominations, respectively.
Triet’s movie, which just garnered an impressive five Oscar nominations, and “The Animal Kingdom,” which opened at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard and won a prize, will vie for top Cesar awards including best director and film.
“The Animal Kingdom” is an ambitious film that marks a departure from France’s cinema tradition of social realism. It’s both a creature-filled dystopia and a father-and-son drama, weaving some contemporary concerns over the future of mankind. It’s produced by Pierre Guyard at Nord Ouest Films and co-produced by Artemis.

Italian writer-director Emma Dante’s “Misericordia” has won the top prize at the Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn, Estonia. Adapted from her own play, her third feature tells the story of a young man (Simone Zambelli) with learning difficulties, cared for by a group of sex workers on an island, protecting him from the cruelty of his abusive father. It’s a raw portrait of a marginalized group of people, mixing natural beauty of the locations with the grime of everyday existence.
Zambelli also took the award for best actor, for his role as the man-child at the center of the drama. The best actress prize was shared by Lubna Azabal, who plays a teacher in Jawad Rhalib’s “Amal,” and Kim Higelin, who stars in the controversial French drama “Consent,” directed by Vanessa Filho, as a teenager having an affair with a manipulative and exploitative 50-year-old writer.

“Consent,” an adaptation of Vanessa Springora’s bestselling book which sparked a belated #MeToo moment in France, has lured major distributors while thriving at the local box office and stirring social media buzz.
Represented in international markets by Paris-based outfit Snd, the film marks the sophomore outing of Vanessa Filho whose debut feature “Angel Face” stars Marion Cotillard and played at the Cannes Film Festival.
Inspired by Springora’s real-life story, “Consent” tells the story of a teenage girl who is manipulated and sexually abused by a celebrated writer in his 50s. Although Springora doesn’t name him in her book, “Le Consentement,” the story revolves around Gabriel Matzneff, the renowned author of “Under 16 Years Old,” among his many books promoting sex with minors.
Published in January 2020, “Le Consentement” sent shockwaves in France where it sold more than 300,000 copies and went on to be released in 30 countries across the globe.

Le Consentement
The filming taking place in May of last year, Vanessa Filho‘s sophomore film will leave no audience member unscathed. Based on Vanessa Springora‘s autobiographical book about being groomed and sexually abused, Le Consentement (Consent) features Jean-Paul Rouve, Kim Higelin and Laetitia Casta. This could be a drama that burns down whatever fest it preems at – and we are presuming this will follow the path of Filho’s debut film – Gueule d’ange (aka Angel Face) and hit the Croisette. Her 2018 debut with Marion Cotillard landed in the Un Certain Regard section in Cannes. Filho reteams with Windy Production’s Carole Lambert and Moana Films’ Marc Missonnier.…...
