Mary J. Blige remembers the first time she got positive feedback for her acting. “When I was 7, I did a Christmas play in school, and the word from the other students and teachers was that me and this guy who was also in the play did very, very, very well,” she says. “It put something in me like, ‘Okay maybe I can really do this,’ and I always wanted to act [after] getting that feedback. At some point, I kind of left it alone and got into the music business.”
Choosing the music business early in her career has more than worked out for Blige. To date, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul has sold over 100 million albums worldwide, won nine Grammys and is set to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in October. And she’s not stopping. She just released “Breathing” with rapper Fabolous, the lead...

Seconds after Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson entered the holding room where presenters and performers at Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy gala were to take this picture, someone became starstruck — but who that was might surprise you.
“It’s Jelly Roll!” Wilson shouted excitedly as she saw the Grammy-nominated singer-rapper. But the feeling was mutual, as Jelly Roll later murmured, if only to himself, about the surrealness of the moment. He was standing in proximity to Hanks and Wilson as Dionne Warwick sat nearby and members of Green Day were hanging out while everyone waited for one of music’s greatest architects — Davis himself — to arrive.
The interaction was just one of several “pinch-me” moments as the likes of The Isley Brothers, Maluma, Josh Groban, Lainey Wilson and many more came together to take a snapshot with Davis and commemorate the night of amazing music that was to come at the legendary party,...

Rudolph Isley, a founding member of the musical group, the Isley Brothers, has died at age 84.
“There are no words to express my feelings and the love I have for my brother. Our family will miss him. But I know he’s in a better place,” said Ronald Isley in a statement.
Rudolph first started singing in church with his brothers Ronald and O’Kelly Isley. He was just a teenager when the group’s hit song, “Shout,” debuted in the 1950s.
The brothers then released “Twist and Shout” in the 1960s, which the Beatles used as the closing song on their debut album.
Other popular Isley Brothers songs include “This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You),” “It’s Your Thing” and “Fight the Power (Part 1).”

Rudolph Isley, a founding member of the Grammy-winning Isley Brothers who helped create some of the most memorable songs in American musical history, has died. His brother Ron confirmed the news to Deadline. Rudolph Isley was 84.
In a statement provided to Deadline, Ron Isley said of his brother’s passing, “There are no words to express my feelings and the love I have for my brother. Our family will miss him. But I know he’s in a better place.”
The Isley Brothers have had various lineups through the years, but Rudy was with the band from its beginnings in the late 1950s to his retirement from music in 1989, when he took up a Christian ministry. During that time, they recorded such classics as “Shout,” cowritten by Rudy, which in 1959 became their first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. The record sold over a million copies. The Isley Brothers were one of the first bands to put Jimi Hendrix on the map. They also ended a career dry spell the guitarist had been experiencing in 1963/64. Here’s how Hendrix’s audition went.
Jimi Hendirx’s audition for the Isley Brothers
After he moved to New York, Hendrix’s reputation reached the Isley Brothers. They were in need of a new backing guitarist and Hendrix seemed like he could possibly be just what they were looking for. So the band found Hendrix, contacted him, and invited him to audition at their home in Teaneck, New Jersey.
The youngest of the brothers, Ernie Isley, then-eleven and not yet in the group, recalled Hendrix’s audition:
“When he arrived, he said he couldn’t audition because his guitar was in the pawnshop,” he said, according to Wild Thing: The Short, Spellbinding Life of Jimi Hendrix by Philip Norman. “We got it out for him,...

On an early Saturday evening in Philadelphia, in a pastoral stretch of park known as the Mann Center for the Performing Arts, Questlove is making time stand still. Onstage with him are Ronald Isley, wearing a patent-leather suit and looking ageless enough at 82 to make you think of Dorian Gray; Ernie Isley, playing a guitar solo with his teeth at a comparatively youthful 71; and the rest of the current-day iteration of the Isley Brothers, along with Questlove’s Roots bandmate Captain Kirk Douglas on guitar.

Suffering from many of the same issues as Kasi Lemmons’ Witney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody, Spinning Gold contains too rich of a life for its 137-minute runtime. The brilliance of both Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane and Todd Haynes’ fictional glam rock epic Velvet Goldmine is that they understood there’s only so much you can bite off, starting with the official record and working with those in closest proximity to their subject.
Directed by Timothy Scott Bogart––son of its subject, Neil Bogart––and told from the first-person perspective of the record executive (played by Jeremy Jordan), Spinning Gold takes the colorful story of an entrepreneur who died at age 39 and races through several highlights. These include discovering and packaging Kiss, figuring out that Donna Summer’s “Love to Love You Baby” needed to be 17 minutes long so people can make love to it, and working with the Isley Brothers,...

The greatest Artists of all time seem to have emerged fully formed from the ether of musical legend as if their success had been simply undeniable and preordained. As if Donna Summer didn’t so much write “Love to Love Ya Baby,” as manifest it; as if Kiss’ timeless anthem “Rock N’ Roll Nite” wasn’t so much composed, as delivered fully-realized from hard rock Valhalla directly to Paul Stanley and Gene Simmon’s fingertips.

What do Donna Summer, Parliament, Gladys Knight, The Isley Brothers, The Village People, and Bill Withers all have in common with the rock band Kiss? Along with a rag tag team of young music lovers, Casablanca Records would rewrite history and change the music industry forever. Casablanca Records is one of the most influential music labels in history, but the story of its founder, Neil Bogart, isn't as well-known as it should be. Donna Summer, Parliament, Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Isley Brothers, The Village People, Bill Withers, and the rock band Kiss all rose to great heights thanks to Bogart and were signed to the label that would become the most successful independent record company in history. Now, the film "Spinning Gold" looks to transport audiences back to the 1970s, when disco reigned supreme, funk was beginning to pick up steam, and Neil Bogart was on top of the world. Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming music producer biopic, and more.

The Isley Brothers rolled through their catalog of hits in the latest episode of NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert.
Recorded at the soul outfit’s home studio in St. Louis, Missouri, the performance opened with a rendition of “Between the Sheets” (complete with Ronald Isley doing a nod to Notorious B.I.G.’s “Big Poppa,” which sampled the song), which seamlessly transitioned into “Footsteps in the Dark,” famously sampled by Ice Cube.
From there, the Isley Brothers delivered their 1975 classic, “For the Love of You,” then closed out their set with “That Lady.

The Isley Brothers have enlisted Snoop Dogg for their first new song in four years, “Friends and Family.”
“Friends and Family” is a breezy party-starter with a thumping bass groove and some slick guitar work from Ernie Isley. The track finds Ronald Isley celebrating the most important things in life — “Although we didn’t have much we still had each other,” he croons, “And what we went through, we went through it together/We stick together through thick or thin/I thank God for family and all my day one friends!

2020 has been a rough year, and that’s putting it lightly.
First we were devastated by the coronavirus – and are still dealing with it – and then the murder of George Floyd became the straw that broke the camel’s back in terms of the world finally being fed up with police brutality. He was killed by asphyxia when officer Derek Chauvin held his knee on his neck for nearly 9 minutes while arresting him in Minneapolis, despite Floyd saying repeatedly that he couldn’t breathe.
The incident led to nationwide protests and riots in nearly every major Us city, while many celebrities have also weighed in to make their voices heard – both at the aforementioned protests and on social media. And though a lot of them have said some very smart and insightful things, and earned much respect, others, well, not so much.

HollywoodNews.com: Building off the overall disappointing nominations, Grammy voters managed to find some good to reward with awards but there were just as many undeserving champs. And, among the performances, there was the same mixed bag of results.
The Good
Eminem’s mediocre “Recovery” led among nominees but, fortunately, he only won two Grammys last night and Arcade Fire bested him for the night’s top prize, Album of the Year.
Most pundits, including myself, predicted either Justin Bieber or Drake and, to a lesser extent, Mumford and Sons or Florence and the Machine, would win Best New Artist.
