It’s nearly time for “Queen Sugar” fans to “take flight” one last time, as we prepare to say goodbye to the Bordelon family.
OWN has released the official trailer for the seventh and final season of the critically acclaimed drama, created by Ava DuVernay and executive produced by Oprah Winfrey, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 6.
“If we do not honor our past, we dishonor our future. Listen,” says Rutina Wesley’s Nova, the eldest Bordelon sibling, as the clip begins, previewing the tense and tender scenes that will play out over the next 13 episodes.
The first look, set to Al Green’s “Love and Happiness,” tees up the latest developments in the lives of Bordelons: Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) and Darla (Bianca Lawson) have welcomed their second child, a daughter, and they continue to fight for their family’s future by exorcising their personal demons — namely, his deal with the...

What began as an autobiographical lark for a brother and sister scribbling down stories about growing up in a radical family of an unconventional size has turned into the basis for Hollywood’s decades-long obsession with their familial farces. The portrait of charming, controlled chaos within Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey’s novel “Cheaper by the Dozen” has been adapted for the screen twice before, produced during two drastically different eras. Each version retained the name but featured varying outcomes for the characters, with the 1950s iteration featuring a not-so-plucky ending compared to its more current counterpart in 2003. Yet the resonant themes, centered on an unsinkable family’s resilience during trying times, are what tie them together.

A joyless exercise in IP mining, “Cheaper by the Dozen” is all the more depressing for its glimpses of unfulfilled potential.
No one really needed to follow up a 2005 sequel of a 2003 remake of a 1950 adaptation of a 1948 autobiographical novel. But if you’re going to attempt to bring this story into the present day, you couldn’t ask for a better team than director Gail Lerner and writers Kenya Barris and Jenifer Rice-Genzuk Henry (“Grown-ish”). And who wouldn’t want to see a charmingly practical Gabrielle Union reign over lots of cute kids and a loving — if lackluster — husband played by Zach Braff?
Other than Braff, who isn’t actually supposed to be playing lackluster, it’s hard to say where everything went wrong. Lerner, Barris, and Henry all work primarily in TV, but that shouldn’t have been an unscalable obstacle. Barris co-wrote 2017’s raucous “Girls Trip,” and...

“Queen Sugar” has been renewed for Season 7 at OWN, with that season set to be the show’s last. Writing on the new season has begun, with production set to begin in early 2022.
“To everything, there is a season,” said series creator Ava DuVernay. “And my producing partner Paul Garnes and I have had seven gorgeous seasons making ‘Queen Sugar’ with a remarkable cast and crew, alongside our partners at OWN and Warner Bros. Television. To write and produce seven seasons of a modern drama centered on a Black family is a radical act in our industry and a triumph that has far exceeded every hope I held. Now I feel strongly that the story, which began as a sunrise of a suggestion from Oprah, is ready for its sunset as a dream fully realized. ‘Queen Sugar’ has been one of the true joys of my career and my gratitude is buoyant and boundless.

Tammy Townsend can do it all. Act, sing, dance, she's an accomplished performer who has made her way down to Louisiana to grace the screen as Billie on OWN's acclaimed drama series, Queen Sugar.
Billie is Prosper Denton's estranged daughter who comes back to St. Josephine with secrets she's been waiting 20 years to tell.
I was able to chat with Tammy about honestly portraying Billie's trauma, playing opposite one of the Disney Channel's biggest stars, her favorite scene partner, and whether she'll be returning to Queen Sugar.
Had you been a fan of Queen Sugar before working on the show? What attracted you to the role?
Tammy: I knew Queen Sugar, but I hadn't invested in it yet at that point. But a lot of the actors on the show I was familiar with, and I knew how good they were.
I was familiar with their work and stuff.

Gearing up for Tuesdays this fall? The TV lineup has something for everyone with titles like Queen Sugar, The Flash, The Bachelorette, and more returning. Below, we’re rounding up a few of the highly-anticipated titles. Queen Sugar Louisiana’s Bordelon family face life’s struggles together, which will be as necessary as ever in the drama’s sixth season. Stressed about his growing family with wife Darla (Bianca Lawson), Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) crosses moral (and legal) lines. “He wants to do whatever he can to provide for his unborn baby,” says producing director Lisa France. His outspoken sister, investigative journalist Nova (Rutina Wesley), “experiences some strong reactions to those she’s trying to expose,” France adds. At least impassioned sibling Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) is in a good place as she (secretly) romances her reformed ex-husband, Davis (Timon Kyle Durrett). Exclusive: Umc, the AMC Networks streaming service with a focus on Black film and TV, has renewed four of its original series including the top-rated Craig Ross Jr.’s Monogamy and A House Divided, which will both return for their third seasons.
The streamer also gave Season 2 renewals to rookies Double Cross and Stuck With You, part of a renewed focus on originals that has seen a new series premiere almost every month on the service in 2020.
