Equal time rules do not, in fact, apply to slightly fictionalized treatments of the real-life trials and tribulations of professional basketball teams, but for at least an hour it’s hard to shake the feeling that FX/Hulu’s six-parter Clipped exists as a make-good for the surplus of programming dedicated to the Lakers.
In terms of tone and style, that first episode of Clipped plays like the scrappy and far less enjoyable and successful younger brother to HBO’s Winning Time, an apt parallel for the relationship between the Clippers and the Lakers.
This sells Clipped a bit short. I watched the pilot twice, separated by several months. The first time, I thought it was a mess, more cartoonish and broad than it had any reason to be. The second time, once I’d gotten all the comparisons to other shows out of my system — once I’d stopped...

Domont, whose TV directing credits include Billions and Suits, made her feature screenwriting and helming debut with the pic, which was spawned via T-Street and MRC’s Emerging Filmmaker Program and counts Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman among the executive producers.
The script for the relationship thriller follows Emily (Bridgerton‘s Phoebe Dynover) and Luke (Alden Ehrenreich), who work together at a cutthroat financial firm and are also a couple. When a coveted promotion arises, the pair’s once supportive exchanges begin to sour as power and gender dynamics irrevocably shift, forcing them to face the true price of success and the limits of ambition.

One of the most acclaimed movies of the year is being turned into a miniseries by AMC. For better or worse, "BlackBerry," which was released in theaters back in May, is going to be repurposed as a three-episode TV show that will air on the cable network next month across three nights. It will air in three parts on November 13, 14, and 15 on AMC, with all three episodes available on AMC+ on November 13. Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks,...

Fair Play is a 2023 thriller film written and directed by Chloe Domont. The film stars Phoebe Dynevor, Alden Ehrenreich, Eddie Marsan, and Rich Sommer.
“Fair Play” is a movie about ambition and how a professional relationship can affect a romantic relationship. In every place, there is an expression for this that ultimately recommends the same thing: not mixing love and work.
It’s difficult not to do so when, as in this case, both protagonists work ten hours a day and have no time for anything else but the company.
Plot
Emily and Luke are engaged, attractive, and have a promising future. There’s only one problem: they work at the same company, and company protocol doesn’t accept it. The problem arises when she gets promoted and he slowly starts losing his position in the complex corporate organization.

The first sound you hear in the extraordinary relationship thriller/psychodrama “Fair Play”? It’s the lingering roar of the rocket writer-director Chloe Domont is about to launch into space to tear through gendered power dynamics, male-dominated beats of a high-wired workplace and masculine fragility.
In reality, it’s a moan you hear, from none other than Donna Summer at the start of her sultry song “Love to Love You.” Yes, you’re supposed to feel a subtle erotic vibe—the song choice, in that regard, is anything but subtle to kickstart seasoned TV director Domont’s simmering and gradually explosive feature debut.
Before we know it, Emily and Luke find themselves in the bathroom of a wedding party following in the song’s footsteps, to get it on in a hurry. Played with volatile precision by Phoebe Dynevor (“Bridgerton”) and Alden Ehrenreich (“Oppenheimer”), the two are desperately into each other’s sexuality,...

With the chillier fall months slowly creeping in, Netflix is more than ready for curl-up-and-binge-something season. This month, the streamer will debut some of its most highly anticipated projects of the fall season, including the latest Mike Flanagan horror series “The Fall of the House of Usher,” which will premiere just in time for your Halloween binge watching. Netflix will also bring several other horror films and series to its platform for at least the month, including “It Follows,” “Deliver Us from Evil,” and the new Spanish nun horror film “Sister Death.”
For the less horror-minded, in addition to dozens of Netflix Original films, series, comedy specials, family programs, and documentaries, such as the four-part documentary series “Beckham,” you’ll soon be able to stream a large collection of library additions that includes the recent blockbuster “Dune,” “Gladiator,” and more.

Now what would be more cozy on a brisk Fall evening than a film about an office romance? Y’know, just like Pam and Jim on that TV sitcom set in the previously mentioned locale. The flirting, the smoldering glances, and the eventual declarations of affection. Ah, but what if employee intimate relationships are frowned upon, or just plain verboten, at the company? That too has been fodder for sitcoms like “The People’s Choice” and “Occasional Wife” and…I’m really, really aging myself. In this week’s new release, that notion isn’t played for laughs as the stakes are truly high. So, if all’s fair in “love and war”, then what could truly be considered Fair Play when the “going gets tough” and desperate?
This tale starts with the story’s main couple full of the excitement of, often physically exhausting, romance. Twenty-somethings Emily (Phoebe Dynevor) and...

"The only man I let walk all over me is you!" Netflix has debuted a spicy second trailer for Chloe Domont's exceptional film Fair Play, still one of my personal favorites. This premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival in January, and it's set to open in theaters in October very soon (first trailer here). An incredibly taut thriller set on Wall Street. An unexpected promotion at a cutthroat hedge fund in NYC pushes a young couple’s relationship to the brink, threatening to unravel far more than their recent engagement. Phoebe Dynevor stars as Emily, with Alden Ehrenreich as Luke, and a cast with Eddie Marsan, Rich Sommer, Sebastian De Souza, Sia Alipour, and Brandon Bassir. I wrote in my glowing review from Sundance, after watching the audience burst into huge applause at the end: "I absolutely loved this film, I felt the exhilaration build inside of me. I...

If it looks like the walls are closing in on stars Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich in the new trailer for Netflix’s “Fair Play,” that’s no accident. “We physically started to bring the walls in—the hallway between their living room and their bedroom,” writer and director Chloe Domont told Vanity Fair in an interview published Tuesday, hours before the wide release of the “Fair Play” trailer. “It’s not anything that I ever wanted or expected the audience to notice. You just feel like the world is closing in on them.”
Domont’s thriller made waves at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where Netflix picked it up for a reported $20 million. The streaming service will release “Fair Play” this fall alongside its stable of flashy awards contenders, including “May December” and “Maestro.”

Alden Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor have a tough time navigating a clandestine romance while competing for a coveted job promotion in the first trailer for the Netflix thriller Fair Play.
From writer and director Chloe Domont, the movie was a hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and focuses on Luke (Ehrenreich) and Emily (Dynevor), co-workers at a high-powered hedge fund firm who have recently gotten engaged. While they continue to keep the relationship a secret, dynamics between the pair get tense as both aim to achieve professional gains despite the costs.
In the trailer that was released Tuesday ahead of the film’s Oct. 13 streaming launch, Dyvenor’s Emily says, “We both can’t keep working here.” This leads Ehrenreich’s Luke to reply, “I’m not quitting.”
Later, Emily asks, “Why is it so hard to accept that I deserve that job?”
Eddie Marsan, Rich Sommer and Sebastian De Souza also star.

Call it the summer of Alden Ehrenreich. After going toe-to-toe with no less a talent than Robert Downey, Jr. in "Oppenheimer," reminding audiences that the "Hail, Caesar!" actor has far more to offer than a Harrison Ford impression in "Solo: A Star Wars Story," Ehrenreich is back to further flex his range as a performer in "Fair Play."
Of course, he's not doing it alone. The thriller, which first debuted at this year's Sundance Film Festival and has since been picked up by Netflix, also features a ferocious leading performance by "Bridgerton" star Phoebe Dynevor as Emily. As a young and happy (and horny!) couple working at the same high-powered New York City hedge fund, they've agreed to keep their relationship under wraps -- not least because their fraternization violates company policy. The private/professional life arrangement seems to be working just fine ... until Ehrenreich's Luke is rumored to be up for a sought-after promotion.

Netflix has released the first trailer for the erotic thriller “Fair Play,” which the streamer acquired for $20 million in one of the biggest deals out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
“Bridgerton” star Phoebe Dynevor and “Oppenheimer” actor Alden Ehrenreich star in the film, which unravels the complex relationship of a power-hungry couple contending for power at a cutthroat financial firm. “Fair Play” marks writer-director Chloe Domont’s debut feature film, following her time helming episodes of the HBO series “Ballers” and Showtime’s “Billions.” The film also stars Eddie Marsan (“Ray Donovan”), Rich Sommer (“Mad Men”) and Sebastian De Souza (“The Great”).
Following its premiere, “Fair Play” sparked a bidding war among several key distributors, including Searchlight and Neon.
Per the film’s official synopsis, “When a coveted promotion at a cutthroat financial firm arises, once supportive exchanges between lovers Emily (Dynevor) and Luke (Ehrenreich) begin to sour into something more sinister.

Chloe Domont’s “Fair Play” sparked one of the few bidding wars at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and Netflix has dropped the first trailer for all to see. At a festival where even seemingly surefire titles like “Cat Person” went without a buyer, “Fair Play” was snagged f0r $20 million from Netflix. That’s shy of the record $25 million that Apple paid for eventual Best Picture Oscar winner “Coda,” but who’s counting?

This article contains details from real life events that will likely spoil upcoming episodes of HBO’s White House Plumbers.
Having learned most of what I know about the Watergate scandal from Mad magazine, it took me a while to realize White House Plumbers is a satire. The five-part HBO series telling the true story of the secret unit inside President Richard M. Nixon’s White House begins with The New York Times, not necessarily renowned for its comedic prowess. The story got the paper labeled as scions of “liberal media,” another term seemingly rendered spoof by the stringent journalistic standards of the periodical. The White House Plumbers pulled out their tools to stop the leaking of the Pentagon Papers, and hit a water main. It appears predestined they would get clogged at a place called the Watergate.

The legacy of the Watergate break-in is one of virulent distrust in the American government, and in some cases aggressive empowerment of shady tactics from the American government. Our media has been enraptured with the story for decades, as an example of how head-and-shoulders-down journalism work can take down the tyrannical powers that be, from Alan J. Paluka’s “All the President’s Men” to Ron Howard’s “Frost/Nixon.”
But now, Hollywood has shifted to depictions from within the Watergate scandal. Just one year after the limited series “Gaslit,” we have a new five-episode limited series entitled “White House Plumbers.” And the results are sloppy, much like the actual Watergate break-in.
The primary White House Plumbers — the special investigation unit tasked to “plug leaks” emitting from the White House and protect President Richard Nixon’s power by any means necessary — are the gruff E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and the...

As a piece of history, the Watergate scandal is a daunting narrative smorgasbord.
There were too many characters in this madcap dramedy and they almost all beggar belief — one outlandish caricature after another — except that they’re all real. It’s a problem that Hollywood has solved by telling the Watergate story over and over again, with the spotlight on a different principal within the burgeoning fiasco each time. Maybe there are commonalities between Watergate recountings — the security guard removing the tape from an illicitly opened door has become the Murder of Bruce Wayne’s Parents of 20th century American history — but with an ever-changing prism, it should be possible to never come away with a repeated perspective.
Maybe you have All the President’s Men on one, very serious, end of the spectrum and Dick on another, very silly, end of the spectrum and every other variation looking for tonal traction in between.

HBO’s White House Plumbers is born out of a simple truth: that the events that occurred at the Watergate Office Building on June 17, 1972, while accounting for one of the most seismic political scandals in American history, were profoundly stupid. By walking us through each step in the planning, execution, and attempted cover-up of the operation, Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck’s five-part limited series—based on Egil and Matthew Krogh’s 2007 book Integrity—effectively underlines just how braindead the whole thing was, even as it struggles to wring many laughs from its depiction of the events.
“No names have been changed to protect the innocent, because nearly everyone was found guilty” reads the opening title card, accompanied by a jazzy, Ocean’s Eleven-esque number as our suited-and-booted burglars stride confidently into the Watergate building. They almost immediately encounter a door that they’re unable to unlock and have no choice but to retreat.
