The young adult novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton has captivated readers for decades, and the 1983 film adaptation, filled with rising stars, further cemented its place in popular culture. Now, a new musical adaptation at the Jacobs Theater on Broadway seeks to tap into the timeless story’s magic.
The musical, directed by Danya Taymor, possesses undeniable heart and soul, but it occasionally falls short of a truly theatrical experience. Although the plot of The Outsiders is rich in dramatic events—a clash between rival gangs, a star-crossed romance, and a climactic confrontation—the stage adaption can easily be compared to other classic stage productions, particularly Grease and West Side Story.
The script, written by Adam Rapp and Justin Levine, focuses on three orphaned brothers: Ponyboy, portrayed by Brody Grant as the narrator; the brawny and romantic Sodapop, played by Jason Schmidt; and the eldest brother, Darrel, portrayed by Brent Comer as the father figure.

On April 11, Angelina Jolie stepped out of her vehicle and took everyone’s breath away. It had been a minute since fans spotted the 48-year-old, especially alongside her children. This was a special occasion; Jolie and her daughter Vivienne Jolie-Pitt served as producers for The Outsiders. The pair, along with Jolie’s son, Pax Jolie-Pitt, were there to celebrate the opening night of the Broadway show.

“Juvenile Delinquents Turn Heroes,” proclaims a newspaper headline in S.E. Hinton’s 1967 novel The Outsiders, which was famously adapted for the screen in 1983 by Francis Ford Coppola. And the juvenile delinquents on stage at the Bernard J. Jacobs Theatre are doing the same, rescuing a Broadway season overstuffed with undercooked musicals in an unexpectedly persuasive new adaptation of Hinton’s scrappy, moving story.
This show follows close on the heels of two other book-to-movie-to-musical adaptations, The Notebook and Water for Elephants. But The Outsiders far outstrips them both in the sophisticated storytelling of Adam Rapp and Justine Levine’s book, the adventurous staging of director Danya Taymor, and the dramatically specific and potent score from Levine and folk duo Jamestown Revival. Put another way, The Outsiders is, at last, a darn good musical.

Jeff Daniels as eternally glum police chief Del Harris returns for a widening murder conspiracy in the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice, which dropped Monday.
After the sudden, mysterious death of a former police officer in Pennsylvania’s rust belt in the rookie season is not quite solved by Harris, to say the least, the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice returns to the fictional town of Buell, where a compromised Del and Grace Poe (Maura Tierney) try to rebuild their lives.
That’s until the trailer reveals a series of unrelated murders that may add up to a much larger conspiracy closing in on a tight-knit town. “We never really do move on, do we?” Del questions at one point.
The fateful wrench from the first-season finale cover-up surfaces, as does Del fretting over how to protect the murder suspect and son of his sometimes girlfriend Grace.

Amazon announced that the sophomore run — titled American Rust: Broken Justice — will premiere on its Prime Video platform rather than the previously announced ad-supported service Freevee. All 10 episodes of the season will debut in a binge drop on March 28.
The drama was originally developed for Showtime, which canceled the show after its first season aired. Freevee picked up American Rust for season 2 in June 2022, with the show now airing on the Amazon flagship service. With Amazon having formally added ads to its Prime Video platform, Freevee programming has been migrating to the larger Prime Video.

Angelina Jolie and Vivienne Jolie-Pitt are teaming up for an upcoming Broadway venture, Et has learned.
Angelina will serve as a lead producer for the musical The Outsiders, an adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film.
Vivienne, the 15-year-old daughter of Angelina and Brad Pitt, will serve as her mom’s volunteer assistant and will be involved in the production.
“Viv reminds me of my mother [Marcheline Bertrand] in that she isn’t focused on being the center of attention but in being a support to other creatives,” Angelina says in a statement to Et. “She’s very thoughtful and serious about theatre and working hard to best understand how to contribute.”
This is an exciting time for the mother-daughter duo as a source tells Et that Angelina has been taking Vivienne to the theater “since she was a little girl, and Vivienne loves musical theater.

Updated with more testimony. Actor Anthony Rapp detailed what he called an “alarming” episode of sexual coercion involving Kevin Spacey when Rapp was 14 years old to close the second day of testimony in a 40 million lawsuit being tried in U.S. Supreme Court in Lower Manhattan.
During about an hour on the witness stand after a brief start earlier today, Rapp – a well-regarded Broadway performer known for Rent and now also a series regular on Star Trek: Discovery on Paramount+ — described how he found himself in Spacey’s New York apartment in the spring of 1986. Rapp’s initial report in 2017 about what he said happened in that high-rise building helped usher in a cascade of allegations against the former House of Cards star and Oscar winner, who also faces trial in the UK in a separate sexual abuse case. Rapp delivered his testimony about 30 feet away from Spacey, who looked...

Five years ago, the story that had long been whispered in the halls of agencies and studios, as well as on film and television sets, finally became public. A series of bombshell articles revealed that Harvey Weinstein harassed and assaulted dozens of women for decades and used his power to bully them into silence.
Weinstein’s fall was the fuse that ignited a revolution. That upheaval turned things around for the better, and culture has been forever changed. And yet, the entertainment industry still has a long way to go to untangle a complex web of decades of bad behavior. In an interesting turn of events, the fight for change that began nearly five years ago with those initial stories will be litigated once again in courtrooms across America in the coming weeks.
Sexual violence cases demonstrate the slow arc of justice and the many delays and detours it can take to achieve meaningful progress.

Well, this is a shocker.
When TV shows are canceled, they usually fade away, with little hope of a revival.
The Amazon-owned streaming service Freevee has picked up American Rust, five months after its cancellation at Showtime.
Series stars Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney are set to return for the second season.
Produced by Boat Rocker and executive produced by Daniels, Dan Futterman, and Adam Rapp, the second season of the compelling crime drama set in a Pennsylvania Rust Belt town will stream exclusively on Freevee.
The move is especially surprising because the series is moving from premium cable to a free, ad-supported streaming service.
Based on Philipp Meyer’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name, the first season of American Rust explored the tattered American Dream in a Rust Belt town in southwest Pennsylvania through the eyes of police chief Del Harris (Daniels).

Amazon Freevee has come to the rescue for American Rust. Amazon’s free ad-supported VOD streaming service (formerly IMDb TV) has ordered a second season of the Rust Belt drama series that was canceled by Showtime in January. Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney are returning to lead the cast.
American Rust initially was ordered straight-to-series at USA Network in November 2017, but a few months later, the network opted not to move forward with it. At the time, sources said the order was contingent on the producers finding a big star for the lead, which didn’t happen. It then moved to Showtime, with Daniels attached to star and executive produce, where it aired for one season. The network announced in January that it would not be renewed, and now Freevee has picked up the drama following its cancellation by Showtime. The show will stream exclusively on Freevee.

Amazon Freevee has picked up the second season of “American Rust,” the Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney-starring crime series that was previously canceled at Showtime earlier this year.
Based on Philipp Meyer’s acclaimed 2009 novel of the same name, the drama explores the fallout of the “tattered American Dream” in a rustic Pennsylvania town through the lens of the police chief Del Harris. When the son of the woman he loves, Grace Poe (Tierney), is accused of murder, he’s forced to decide how far he’s willing to go in order to protect him.
“I’m grateful to Amazon Freevee for giving us the chance to make Season Two of ‘American Rust,’” Daniels said in a statement. “Set inside a struggling American small town, our authentic, realistically told story is built for streaming. The movies they don’t make anymore are being made as series at places like Amazon Freevee.

Showtime has opted not to renew American Rust for a second season, bringing Jeff Daniels’ short time as Chief of Police Del Harris to an end.
“We can confirm that American Rust will not be moving forward with a second season,” Showtime said in a statement. “We would like to thank our partners at Boat Rocker, our talented showrunner Dan Futterman and the rest of the wonderful writers, and our amazing cast led by Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney.”
Cancellations/Renewals Scorecard: TV Shows Ended Or Continuing In 2021-22 Season
Based on Philipp Meyer’s debut novel American Rust, the family drama sought to explore the tattered American dream through the eyes of complicated and compromised Police Chief Del Harris (Daniels) in a small Rust Belt town in southwest Pennsylvania. When the woman he loves sees her son accused of murder, Harris is forced to decide what he’s willing to do to protect him.

Back in 2009, when Jeff Daniels was starring in “God of Carnage” on Broadway, TV was on the rise. Cable dramas like “Mad Men” were bringing newfound respect to the medium. Stars formerly exclusive to movie screens (like Alec Baldwin on “30 Rock”) were reinvigorating their careers with weekly roles. And Daniels, being a curious thespian who chased good parts whether they’re in movies or at the theater, whether they’re comedies (like “Dumb and Dumber” and “Something Wild”) or dramas (like “The Squid and the Whale” or “Good Night and Good Luck”), he wanted to know how to find those quality gigs on television.
Luckily, he was sharing the stage with an expert.
“[James] Gandolfini was there, god bless him,” Daniels said of his fellow Tony-nominated cast member. “And Jim… I was starting to go, ‘I want to get into TV. I want to chase whatever that is.’ So Gandolfini said,...

Mary-Louise Parker, a Tony winner for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play, offered a sense in a backstage interview of what it felt like to attend tonight’s show.
“It’s really amazing,” Parker told press in a brief interview streamed to press covering the show. “On the one hand, it sort of feels like you’re back at the Tony Awards. But there is definitely something different about it because every time someone says something poignant or personal, you can hear everyone respond en masse. It’s like there’s this collective commonality that I don’t think I’ve ever experienced in a crowd that big before. Two decades ago Mary-Louise Parker won her first Tony Award for her enthralling performance in David Auburn’s “Proof.” Five Broadway appearances later, Parker is on the cusp of winning the second Tony of her career for her searing turn in Adam Rapp’s “The Sound Inside,” according to our exclusive Tony Awards predictions. “The Sound Inside” has six nominations, including Best Play.
Parker earned the best reviews of her stage career for “The Sound Inside,” topping even the rapturous notices she received for “Proof.” Back then, John Simon (New York Magazine) called Parker’s work in “Proof” “a performance of genius.” In his rave review of “The Sound Inside,” Jesse Green (New York Times) wrote, “Parker, never better in her 30-year stage career, has dug even deeper into Bella, treating each line as if it were an archaeological site; she builds her performance on artifacts, not theories.” Vinson Cunningham...

I’m glad I took notes. Looking at the roster of nominees for this year’s too-long-delayed Tony Awards is all the reminder anyone could need of just how interminable Broadway’s Covid pandemic shutdown has seemed. Productions and performances from the 2019-20 season, many reviewed nearly two years ago, are calling out – some more forcefully than others – to be remembered and honored. As I said, I’m glad I took notes.
This Sunday, the Tony Awards ceremony will be livestreamed on Paramount+, then immediately followed by the two-hour CBS concert special Broadway’s Back!, a celebration of Broadway’s recent reopening after the shutdown of 16-months (or 17 or 18 depending on which shows you decide were the official comebacks). Pre-pandemic, the Tonys originally were scheduled for June 2020, but March of that year brought the sickness and an abrupt shutdown of the industry that would leave a mere 18 productions eligible for the awards,...

Jeff Daniels, star of Showtime’s upcoming drama American Rust, said his career in television would not have been as prolific if it weren’t for his late God of Carnage co-star James Gandolfini and HBO’s The Sopranos.
“Jim Gandolfini made it happen,” the Emmy-winning actor said about his transition from stage and film to TV. “The Sopranos changed television, as did HBO, Showtime, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu. All of a sudden you have all these other places to go.”
During Showtime’s TCA slot, where Daniels joined fellow American Rust co-stars and the creative team behind the drama, the actor said that premium networks and streamers allowed for more crossover between the mediums – also citing co-star Bill Camp who recently appeared in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit.

Showtime has released a trailer for “American Rust,” premiering Sept. 12.
Starring Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney, the limited series based on Philipp Meyer’s novel of the same name follows Del Harris (Daniels), the chief of police of a Pennsylvania Rust Belt town, as he decides how far he’ll go to protect the son of a woman he loves, Grace (Tierney), after a murder upends the town.
“The oath we all took together was, we’d do this for each other,” Daniels’ Del says at the start and end of the trailer, which you can watch below.
The trailer showcases Del’s moral dilemma of how to handle the murder investigation that is complicated by personal connections. In it, he acknowledges the case is “poisoning” the town, as someone is going to have to answer for the crime no matter what. It also offers glimpses of the graphic details...

Mary-Louise Parker is set as a lead opposite Natalie Portman in HBO Films’ The Days of Abandonment, based on Elena Ferrante’s best-selling novel. The film, which is currently in pre-production, hails from writer-director Maggie Betts (Novitiate), Portman and her MountainA Films, Maven Screen Media, Len Amato’s Crash & Salvage and Fandango. Ferrante also serves as an executive producer.
Written and directed by Betts, The Days of Abandonment revolves around Tess, played by Portman. When Tess, a woman who abandoned her own dreams for a stable home life, is in turn abandoned by her husband, her world is thrown off its axis. Adapted from Ferrante’s tour-de-force novel of the same name, The Days of Abandonment is a visceral, no-holds-barred journey into the mind of a woman in crisis that confronts the norms of motherhood and female identity as Tess traverses the darkest reaches of her own psyche.

Hollywood is starting to speak up about film and Broadway producer Scott Rudin’s long, alleged history of abusive behavior toward staff and collaborators. Rudin’s behavior has been heavily documented in both a Hollywood Reporter exposé and a Vulture.com deep dive.
On Saturday, the New York Times published an extensive story interviewing such erstwhile Rudin collaborators as Rita Wilson, David Geffen, Robert Fox, and playwright Adam Rapp. In one particularly harrowing section, Wilson talked about her experience working with Rudin on Broadway for Larry David’s 2015 play “Fish in the Dark,” the same year she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“When she told Mr. Rudin the news, she said, he complained that she would need time off during Tony voting season and asked to see her medical records, while Anna Shapiro, the director, grew upset about having to find a replacement,” the story reads. “A few days later,...

The curtain’s inching up on the Tony Awards: A ceremony will be held on an as-yet-undetermined date in coordination with Broadway’s eventual reopening, but voters will finally be able to make their selections beginning March 1, Tony organizers tell Deadline.
Nominees for the 74th Annual Tony Awards were announced last October, with the 18 eligible productions reflecting the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 season (the count usually numbers in the 30s). The 2020 Tony ceremony and CBS broadcast had originally been set for June 7 at New York’s Radio City Musical Hall, but of course was scuttled due to the Covid shutdown.
The voting period will run from March 1 to March 15. Although Broadway remains officially closed until June, most insiders don’t expect any stagings before fall at the earliest, with timing contingent on widespread Covid-19 vaccinations.

Honoring Broadway’s best, it comes as the industry is shut down due to Covid-19, reminding us all that the film industry isn’t the only one feeling the brunt of Coronavirus. Mary-Louise Parker could add a second Tony Award to her mantle this year to join her 2001 trophy for “Proof.” After receiving rave reviews for her performance in “The Sound Inside,” industry watchers pegged her as the early Tony frontrunner for Lead Actress – Play. The only problem is that she will face stiff competition….from herself.
“The Sound Inside” marked the Broadway debut of the Pulitzer Prize finalist author Adam Rapp (“Red Light Winter”). Parker starred as college writing professor Bella, who lives a mostly solitary life. The only person she seems to have time for is the sole other character in the drama, Christopher (Will Hochman), one of her students. Bella brings the audience on an emotional journey as she deals with the emotional turmoil surrounding a cancer diagnosis. The hypnotic script gifted Parker with a meaty role (she never left the stage) full of dense language and complicated emotions.

Declarations of “She’s Got Legs” might be premature, but Broadway’s Tina: The Tina Turner Musical is already strutting to $1M+ at the weekly box office, becoming one of the season’s most promising productions.
In its second week of previews, Tina was a sell-out at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, grossing $1,386,360 for seven previews. With an average paid admission of $134, Tina hit 96% of its $1.5M potential.
Starring Adrienne Warren in the title role, Tina was a hit in London and seems to be carrying plenty of that good will to Broadway. Opening night is set for Nov. 7.
Tina‘s total helped keep Broadway from slipping more than a tiny 1.6% last week: Total receipts for the 34 Broadway productions for the week ending Oct. 20 were $34,644,583. Total attendance was 286,802, a barely noticeable bump of 1.4% over the previous week.
Another new arrival hit the right notes on Broadway last week: David Byrne’s American Utopia,...
