Inspired by Texas Monthly’s coverage about Villarreal, the show centers on the titular protagonist’s rise as a street journalist and modern-day folk hero in her border-town of Laredo, as she seized the power of social media and pushed the boundaries of the first amendment to expose corruption, cartels and other ills in her beloved community. The raw footage that she live-streamed to her whopping 190K followers made her a lead news source and a popular figure in Laredo and beyond— but, Villarreal was arrested for posting the names of two deceased victims before they had been made public by authorities.

Beau Willimon, the playwright and showrunner who launched Netflix’s “House of Cards,” is running unopposed for re-election to a two-year term as president of the Writers Guild of America East.
Willimon also ran unopposed in 2017 to succeed Michael Winship. The WGA East announced a total of 24 candidates Thursday for its top officer posts and Council seats. Results will be announced Sept. 20.
The announcement comes with the WGA locked in a heated standoff with Hollywood agents over the issues of how agents represent WGA members. Many awards pundits see the Writers Guild as a bellwether for the Oscars, though there’s a catch: oftentimes the Oscar nominees are not eligible at the guild because they aren’t written under its strict guidelines. Thus, Oscar nominee “The Favourite” was not eligible at WGA as this foreign production did not go through the lengthy process of proving its eligibility.

The HBO comedy “Barry” is having a great day. First it reaped three Golden Globe nominations and then it earned another three bids at the Writers Guild of America Awards. At the WGA, it competes for Best Comedy Series writing as well as for an individual episode and for the catch-all Best New Series award.
For the comedy series award, “Barry” faces off against reigning Emmy champ “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as well as “Atlanta,” “Glow” and “The Good Place.” “Barry” is the only comedy up for the new series award alongside the dramas “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Homecoming,” “Pose” and “Succession.”
Of those four, only “Succession” made it into Best Drama Series where it competes against the final season of “The Americans,” season 4 of “Better Call Saul” and the sophomore editions of “The Crown” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
The WGA Awards winners will be revealed on Feb.

“The Americans” – Season 5, Episode 7, “The Committee on Human Rights”
Directed by: Matthew Rhys
Written by: Hilary Bettis
Starting with an introduction and ending with a goodbye, “The Committee on Human Rights” was framed by Gabriel’s impending departure. But how he left ensured Frank Langella’s character would be more than a fond memory. He shared pivotal parting advice with Phillip (Matthew Rhys) and left a distinct impression on Paige (Holly Taylor). In between, the older Jennings child broke up with her neighbor boyfriend, Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and Phillip disagreed on whether or not they should “like” their human targets, and an addition to the family was kept at bay.
It all added up to the difference between Gabriel and his agents: While it was hard for him to leave, it’s much harder for them. He was alone, responsible only to his work; they’re together and responsible to each other,...

Alligator Written by Hilary Bettis Directed by Elena Araoz Presented by New Georges and The Sol Project at A.R.T./New York Theatres, NYC November 27-December 18, 2016
In a note in the program for Alligator, the world-premiere play opening New Georges' 25th season, Hilary Bettis describes writing it in "a fever dream of alcohol, death, violence, and poverty." Alligator, the first of a planned series of collaborations by The Sol Project with off-Broadway companies to produce new plays by Latinx playwrights, carries the audience into a similar space, embracing chaos in order to map the "pain and destruction," as Bettis's note puts it, caused by the unplanned, unpredictable intersections of people's lives. Against the backdrop of the Florida Everglades in 1999, Alligator's characters struggle, compellingly if often unsuccessfully, within and against this chaos for self-realization and human connection.
At the heart of Alligator are Ty (Dakota Granados) and his twin sister...
