This is set to open in theaters January 2025, one of these dumb & fun comedies being primed for release when everyone needs something to laugh at in January. Another raucous comedy about people trying to find some cash fast. "It's gonna be One of Them Days." Sony has released the first trailer for “One of Them Days,” its R-rated buddy comedy pairing Keke Palmer with Sza, in the Grammy-winning R&b artist’s acting debut.
“Best friends and roommates Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (Sza) are about to have one of them days,” the logline says. “When they discover Alyssa’s boyfriend has blown their rent money, the duo finds themselves going to extremes in a comical race against the clock to avoid eviction and keep their friendship intact.”
The trailer shows the lengths the two friends go to for their rent money, including donating blood, climbing a telephone pole to retrieve a pair of expensive Jordans and applying for a loan despite a hilariously low credit score.
Lawrence Lamont makes his feature directorial debut, helming a script by Syreeta Singleton. The project comes from Issa Rae’s banner Hoorae. Singleton and Lamont first collaborated on...

We’re never going to know what the next, next stage is now! The Big Door Prize has been canceled after two seasons at Apple TV+. “It is a beloved show, and while we know Season 2 ended with a cliffhanger, we are just not moving forward with a third season at this time,” a rep for the streaming service told TVLine in a statement. And what a cliffhanger that was in the Season 2 finale! The series follows the residents of a small town forever changed when the mysterious Morpho machine appears, promising to reveal everyone’s true potential, and leading to them changing jobs, rethinking relationships, and questioning long-held beliefs. Season 2 sees them moving on to the next stage. Then, at the end of it, following what seemed to be a permanent split after a season of “selfploration” for Dusty (Chris O’Dowd) and Cass (Gabrielle Dennis), he returns to the...

Chris O’Dowd and the residents of Deerfield will not be back for new adventures after Apple TV+ opted not to renew the series for a third season, Deadline has confirmed.
The series, which received an early Season 2 pick-up in April 2023, comes from David West Read. It tells the story of a small town that is forever changed when a mysterious machine appears in the general store, promising to reveal each resident’s true life potential.
Starring O’Dowd as Dusty Hubbard, a seemingly content, cheerful family man and high school teacher, who watches everyone around him reevaluate their life choices and ambitions — based on the machine’s printouts — and is forced to question whether he is truly as happy as he once thought.
While he remains skeptical of the machine, his wife, Cass (Gabrielle Dennis), indulges in the dream that there’s something bigger out there for her. Like many of Deerfield’s residents,...

Exclusive: The Upshaws will be coming to an end. Netflix has picked up a 12-episode final installment of the blue-collar multi-camera comedy starring Mike Epps, Kim Fields and Wanda Sykes.
The streamer has been releasing (and renewing) multi-cam comedy series in parts, so the pickup is for Part 7 of The Upshaws, which Netflix calls a final season.
The six-episode Part 5 of The Upshaws premiered in Apil, with the 10-episode Part 6, the sitcom’s penultimate run, slated to debut in early 2025.

Cult college football series Blue Mountain State is making a comeback. The original series’ co-leads Darin Brooks and Chris Romano also are expected to be back for the followup, from Lionsgate Television.
According to sources, the project has not fully landed yet with negotiations ongoing. The likely destinations are said to be Amazon, where Ritchson headlines hit series Reacher, and Netflix, where Blue Mountain State found new audience and cemented its cult status following its original three-season run on Spike.

Exclusive: Netflix has picked up another installment of its popular multi-camera comedy series The Upshaws. The blue-collar sitcom created by Regina Hicks and Wanda Sykes has been renewed for a 10-episode fourth season.
After the 10-episode first season, Seasons 2 and 3 of The Upshaws have been released in two parts — of eight and six episodes each, respectively — so the renewal is for Part 6 of the series, as officially referred to by Netflix.
Production on the 10-episode new season, which will be released in one batch, will begin next year. The six-episode Part 5 of The Upshaws (second half of Season 3), is slated to premiere in spring 2024.
Somewhat flying under the radar, The Upshaws has been a sturdy performer for Netflix in a genre — multi-camera sitcom — that has been challenging for streamers. With the renewal, The Upshaws is tying The Ranch as the second-longest-running original multi-camera comedy on Netflix in number of seasons,...

In her new exclusive uInterview, Gabrielle Dennis explained who her character, Cass, is and what she goes through in season one of the TV show Big Door Prize.
“Well Cass is a mom, she’s a wife, she’s at that crossroads I feel like the entire town is in and, you know, it’s like this big question of where are we at in this world? What is our purpose? And all these things and everything around her is changing,” she told uInterview at SXSW in Austin, Texas.
Cass’s life significantly changes throughout the show and she is not the same person she was at the beginning.
“The show starts with her husband’s 40th birthday, and she’s all excited buying him 40 individual gifts and like life is normal and then like there’s this big emotional change,” she said.

How does one edit “A Black LadySketch Show” when comedic talent such as Issa Rae, Gabrielle Dennis and Robin Thede have gone off-script? “It’s a challenge because everyone is giving you something hilarious,” editor Stephanie Filo says.
Filo is no slouch herself. This year, she achieved something remarkable, landing three Emmy nominations for her editing work on HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” and Hulu’s “History of the World, Part II.”
On “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” Filo relished the chance to edit a Coral Reefs gang sequence on the “WeMurk” sketch featuring Rae, Thede and Dennis . “I didn’t get to cut the other iterations, so I got to have a swing at it,” Filo says. This time, Tracee Ellis Ross, who she describes as “hysterical,” was also in the sketch.

Filo edits the show with Taylor Mason and Malinda Zehner Guerra. Guerra admits, “It does feel very collaborative and that’s not something you always get. Everybody has a sketch and we compile them and create the episodes at the end. When you get to that point, you really feel like it’s a team. Doing all this work from home, you...

Gabrielle Dennis cannot stop laughing. In HBO’s Emmy-winning sketch comedy series A Black Lady Sketch Show, Dennis plays more than a dozen characters to represent the Black female experience through absurdist humor. In Apple TV+ sci-fi dramedy The Big Door Prize, she stars as Cass — the wife of Chris O’Dowd’s Dusty and mom to their daughter (Djouliet Amara) — a homemaker looking for a sense of purpose in unique ways outside of her small-town life. Here, Dennis talks about how she got her start, the significance of Black identity and finding yourself.

Even when the subject matter has nothing to do with Blackness, the show’s existence is impactful, a sentiment Whoopi Goldberg underlined during a recent episode of “The View.”
