Many in Hollywood value golden statues, but some put more value into the golden rule: treat others as you want to be treated. The folks who run the Motion Picture Television Fund take the notion of caring for their colleagues to heart, lending a helping hand to industry members who need extra assistance during difficult times. The charity, founded in 1921 by Mary Pickford, is memorializing its 100th anniversary at its 100 Years of Hollywood: A Celebration of Service gala on June 18.
Though technically in its 101st year of existence, the nonprofit was unable to revel in the monumental milestone in-person in 2021 due to lingering Covid.
MPTF president and CEO Bob Beitcher says, “We were going to do it last year, but it didn’t seem like it was the right time.”
They do, however, have a positive outlook on the postponement. “People don’t celebrate their 100th birthday twice, but we are.

Hollywood studios are lining up to support Gavin Newsom and the effort to defeat the Sept. 14 recall, as executives and the companies themselves pour money into his campaign and a committee set up to ensure that he remains in office.
Their support is hardly a surprise: With the “No” to the recall leading in the polls, and Newsom already having garnered significant industry backing for his reelection bid, studio support for his effort to fight off the recall is far from surprising.
But Newsom’s tenure hasn’t been without some significant industry friction: Last November, The Walt Disney Co. went public with its unhappiness over the governor’s refusal to allow theme parks to reopen. CEO Bob Chapek said.the company was “extremely disappointed” over the continued closure, while executive chairman Bob Iger resigned from a task force on the state’s recovery.

Paramount Pictures is the latest industry donor to chip in on an effort to defeat the recall of California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
According to records from the California Secretary of State, the studio donated $40,000 to Stop the Republican Recall of Governor Newsom, a committee set up to fight the pending effort to oust Newsom from office. The studio also gave $5,000 in March to the California Democratic Party, one of the sponsors of the anti-recall committee, and contributed to Newsom’s 2018 election campaign.
A spokesperson for the studio said that the donation actually was made by ViacomCBS, the studio’s parent company, even though the contribution record lists Paramount.
The recall is not officially on the ballot for later this year, but it is expected to qualify after Secretary of State Shirley Weber said that proponents had passed the signature threshold. Newsom and his allies have been raising money in the meantime.

Reed Hastings, the co-ceo of Netflix, has shelled out a whopping $3 million to a fund opposed to the recall of California Governor Gavin Newsom.
The contribution was reported to the California Secretary of State on Thursday afternoon, and is the largest single contribution to date to the Stop The Republican Recall. (Hat tip: Politico).
Hastings, a longtime donor to Democrats, actually contributed $7 million in 2018 to the California Charter Schools Association’s effort to elect former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in the year’s gubernatorial primary. But Villaraigosa lost to Newsom and Republican John Cox, who advanced to the general election.
Stop The Republican Recall includes other major funding from the California Democratic Party, Professional Engineers in California Government Pecg-pac and Stewart Resnick.

Joe Biden has a $1.9 trillion plan to beat back the coronavirus pandemic and get the American economy back on its feet. However, here in L.A., Disney’s Executive Chairman and his spouse are putting some of their own money on the table to help local small businesses right now.
“Thanks to an incredibly generous donation of $5 million from Willow Bay and Bob Iger, I’m proud to announce that 1,000 of our city’s hardest-hit businesses will come off that waiting list and be helped,” Mayor Eric Garcetti announced tonight. The funds from Iger and Bay will be distributed through the emergency Covid-19 crisis fund of the March 2020 founded Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles.
“Your new commitment will help these businesses weather this storm, and we are beyond grateful for your bold leadership,” Garcetti added of Iger and Bay’s contribution.

Exclusive: The Motion Picture & Television Fund’s nursing home in Woodland Hills was hit hard by the coronavirus in the early days of the pandemic. Seventeen residents were infected between March 31 and April 12, and six died. Since then, however, the home has seen a remarkable comeback in its battle against Covid-19: Not a single resident has tested positive in nearly six months.
Rapid turnaround testing, quarantining, PPE, attention to detail and lots of money are the keys to success. The home is spending $75,000 a month for PPE and testing alone and has performed more than 8,000 nose-swab tests of staff and residents. To help cover those costs, the MPTF’s Evening Before pre-Emmy party raised more than $1.7 million, including $455,000 in matching funds from Jeffrey and Marilyn Katzenberg.
In April, the Country Home set up its own lab, acquired testing devices and supplies and began an aggressive testing program that allows results within two hours.

In a virtual fundraiser put together by Ryan Murphy, Disney TV Studios boss Dana Walden, PR ace Chrisette Hudlin and Laura Shell, California’s junior senator raked in over $8 million for her and Joe Biden’s poll leading White House bid.
Announced on August 27, the event put dough in the purse of the Biden Victory Fund, a joint committee of Joe Biden’s campaign, the Democratic National Committee and state parties. Going into the final 59 days before the election, yesterday’s fundraiser is one of the biggest hauls that Biden and his running mate Harris has raised this season. Featuring both ex-vp Biden and Sen.
