The reason Killer Mike was taken away in handcuffs after winning three Grammy awards Sunday is coming into focus. A senior law enforcement source says a female security guard working the star-studded event claims she was injured by the rapper during a confrontation inside the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Killer Mike denies the allegation in a new statement to Rolling Stone.
According to the source, it was shortly after the Atlanta musician, whose legal name is Michael Render, swept the rap category with trophies for Best Rap Album,...

Killer Mike was detained at the 66th Grammy Awards at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles Sunday afternoon, shortly after winning three of the four rap categories in the pre-show telecast about two hours earlier.
An LAPD source tells Rolling Stone that Michael Santiago Render (Killer Mike’s real name) was handcuffed and detained after an alleged “physical altercation” inside the arena involving a third party. “Somebody complains, obviously we have to do something about it,” the source said. Render was questioned and later booked for misdemeanor battery, according to the LAPD.

‘The Seeding’ Director Barnaby Clay on How to Jump From Short Films to Features — Horror Film School
Barnaby Clay is a true Renaissance man.
Having directed short films, music videos for artists ranging from David Bowie to Rihanna, a feature-length documentary on photographer Mick Rock, and even launched a visual art installation with Danger Mouse and his wife, Yeah Yeah Yeahs rocker Karen O, he is no stranger to expanding his creativity into different mediums.
Yet his newest frontier is feature-length narrative filmmaking, and his debut, the horror film “The Seeding,” expands on the striking imagery of his past work. The plot follows a man (Scott Haze) trapped in the desert, being taken care of by a mysterious woman (Kate Lyn Sheil), who may have an insidious agenda for keeping him safe from the roving gang of teens that are trapping him there.
The gorgeous and claustrophobic desert setting is the movie’s key special effect, as Clay keeps things bleak due to the harsh environment and...

Mgmt have finally confirmed their next album. Titled Loss of Life, the band’s fifth full-length arrives on February 23rd via Mom + Pop. In anticipation, the first single, “Mother Nature,” is out now.
Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser co-produced Loss of Life along with Patrick Wimberly, while their longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann handled mixing. Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never), Brian Burton (Danger Mouse), and James Richardson provide additional production on “Dancing in Babylon” — which includes the first-ever feature on an Mgmt record, thanks to Christine and the Queens. Finally, Miles A. Robinson served as associate producer and engineer on the LP.
With acoustic guitar and relaxed vocals, “Mother Nature” feels a lot more grounded than the psychedelic singles that made Mgmt famous over a decade ago. In a statement, the duo said the song “outlines the archetypical Mgmt mythology of one hero attempting to get the other hero to come...

It was oddly devastating to learn that ITV’s kid’s channel Citv is to close on 1st September 2023. Many millennials and Gen Xers probably haven’t even seen a Citv show for two decades or more – besides, back in the day it wasn’t even a channel, but just a few after-school hours of programming on the regular ITV channel. So why does its closure leave us feeling like it’s the end of an era?
Because the memories of that era were so, so good, that’s why. We all remember getting home from school, grabbing a glass of squash and a Wagon Wheel and immediately flicking the TV on, and Citv (along with Cbbc – and Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel if you were well posh) kept us company until it was time to eat our spaghetti hoops and turkey twizzlers.

Almost 20 years after recording the follow-up to their beloved 2003 album Ghetto Pop Life, Danger Mouse and Jemini have shared their long-shelved Born Again.
Originally released on September 9th, 2003, Ghetto Pop Life marked Danger Mouse’s first official album released on a record label. He went on to work with the likes of Mf Doom, CeeLo Green, The Shins’ James Mercer, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O, but before that, he and Brooklyn rapper Jemini recorded Born Again.
A press release describes the unreleased record as more introspective than the duo’s braggadocios debut, but lead single “Brooklyn Basquiat” still has Ghetto Pop Life’s scrappy quality. “I made a few records but I’m still struggling,” Jemini admits, though moments later, he spits, “The issue that I’m trying to address in this song/ Is how a n**** stay fresh this long.” Complete with a flute melody and an interpolation of The Notorious B.

Later this year, we’ll get to hear Bird Machine, a posthumous album from Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse. Before it’s out in full September 8th, a new single called “The Scull of Lucia” is available now, and it features guest vocals from Jason Lytle of slacker rockers Granddaddy.
Though Linkous was largely the main force behind Sparklehorse, Bird Machine was a group effort. Linkous was almost finished with his fifth album under the moniker before tragically taking his life in 2010; his brother Mark and sister-in-law Melissa, both of whom had been involved with Sparklehorse previously, pored over demo tapes and notes to bring the record to life.
“From the very first seconds of ‘The Scull of Lucia,’ I was transported to a different time,” the album’s producer Joel Hamilton said in a press release. “The recipe is unmistakably Sparklehorse: The pace, the sounds, the overall texture of the voice.

We already had a taste of the creatively gory gameplay for Dead Island 2, and now Deep Silver and Dambuster Studios have revealed the game’s opening cinematic ahead of its launch next month.
Taking on a pulp tone and set to “Drown” by Karen O and Danger Mouse, the Dead Island 2 opening cinematic sees you discover a bloodstained Los Angeles now flooded with the undead. “View a deserted, viscera-drenched Hollywood Boulevard and the empty mansions of the rich and famous in Bel Air. Visit what was once known as the City of Angels and see what gory details await you in sunny, zombie-infested Hell-a.”
The opening sequence was created by Elastic, the studio behind cinematics for games such as Gears 5 and Metro Exodus, as well as opening sequences for television shows like “Shadow and Bone” and “His Dark Materials“.

On the 16th of February 1993, Count Duckula bade its audience ‘Goodnight out there…whatever you are’ for the final time. For five years from 1988, Cosgrove Hall‘s creepy and clever animated kids’ show about a vegetarian vampire duck had dazzled audiences with its madcap mix of farce, physical comedy and witty word-play.
While never as broadly popular as Danger Mouse – the spoof spy caper out of which it was spun, and which also featured David Jason as the voice of its titular character – Count Duckula built a steadfast core of fans. To them, Count Duckula was The Rolling Stones to Danger Mouse‘s Beatles, a darker, edgier delight for those who prefer their cartoons with a little more bite. Whichever way you look at it, it’s hard to refute that they don’t make kids’ TV shows quite like Count Duckula anymore…

“Fuck a thick skin, I got me an exo-skeleton,” the Roots’ Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter spits over a lush, almost spacey track on “Belize,” a highlight of Cheat Codes, his collaboration with producer Danger Mouse. The tough-minded self-assessment of that lyric is not surprising, given his decades long history of being the most underrated Mc who is also easily one of the greatest of all time. Fans know Black Thought’s voice over the Roots’ full-band, comparatively organic sounds. Here, his verbal dexterity mixes with actual sample-based hip-hop, a rarity in contemporary,...

Like nearly everything else, late-night musical performances don’t look the way they did a year ago. It’s not just that musicians in these contexts are playing to mostly vacant studios or places with a single-digit number of audience members.
It’s that a growing number of artists and bands with spots on network talk shows are slowly figuring out a new form that exists somewhere between concert and music video. Of course, that’s a line that was pushed well before last spring. (Take Spike Jonze’s live-to-tape video for Karen O & Danger Mouse’s “Woman” or Travis Scott’s euphoric “goosebumps” on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”) But what used to be a rare occurence has inched a lot closer towards the norm. Beastie Boys Story, released by AppleTV+ in April and nominated for five Emmys, tells the story of the band that was formed in 1978 by Adam Yauch, Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz.
The film, directed by long-time collaborator Spike Jonze, was not your usual rock doc. It was told via a live show put on by Diamond and Horovitz (Yauch passed away in 2012) following the release of their memoir Beastie Boys Book.
Back in April, the film’s press tour was dominated by Diamond and Horovitz joking through interviews with a bit of context from Jonze, who first worked with the band in 1993 on their Time For Livin’ video.
But one of the people instrumental in the film who was not particularly visible was Jonze’s creative producing partner Amanda Adelson, who helped write the film in addition to producing it.

Since nostalgia for any era begins about two decades after the fact, early-2000s look-backs have arrived right on schedule. Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s Super Bowl takeover returned us to their end-of-the-century breakouts; Bernie Sanders couldn’t have picked a more circa-2001 rock band for a rally than the Strokes; Jessica Simpson, once a national punchline after her Chicken of the Sea confusion, has a memoir at the top of the New York Times bestseller list; and suddenly everyone is re-examining Mandy Moore’s pre–This Is Us pop career.

Taylor Swift and Andrew Lloyd Webber didn’t make the cut for their original song “Beautiful Ghosts” from “Cats” when the motion picture academy announced its shortlist for songwriters. And the reviews for the film have been, shall we say, not great. But Swift could still get her revenge at the Golden Globes, where she and Webber did earn a nom for “Ghosts.” And this isn’t the first time the Hollywood Foreign Press has nominated her, so this may be the time they decide to give her the win.
The country ingenue-turned-pop superstar has been nominated twice before at the Globes. First she contended for “Safe and Sound,” which she co-wrote with The Civil Wars and T-Bone Burnett for the film “The Hunger Games” (2012). She ended up winning a Grammy for that composition, but the Globe went to Adele‘s “Skyfall,” which went on to win the Oscar too.

Despite becoming a genre-busting mainstay over the past seven years in his native U.K., psychedelic-soul singer-songwriter Michael Kiwanuka has heretofore remained a relatively anonymous television soundtrack staple in the States, with nary an indie hit to his name. Most fans here know him, if they know him at all, as the singer of Big Little Lies’ theme song “Cold Little Heart.”
That should change with Kiwanuka. His third offering is his most fully-formed work, a meditative, expansive collection of synth-psych, blues-rock, stately folk that amounts to an early-career opus for the 32 year-old singer-songwriter.

Broken Bells, the duo of the Shins’ James Mercer and producer Danger Mouse, ponder the bleakness of modern times on their new song “Good Luck.”
“The face of evil’s on the news tonight/We see the darkness over light,” Mercer sings over a dusty bass groove and loping drums. “But have we ever really lived in better times?” The track gradually intensifies with wordless vocal hooks and psychedelic fuzz guitar, climaxing with a percussive coda.

Dan Auerbach spent the years between Black Keys’ new album, Let’s Rock, and 2012’s Turn Blue recording album after album in his Nashville studio, most of them far more rootsy, layered and restrained than much of his band’s catalog. But to return to the Black Keys’ sound — and a more primal version of it than they manifested during their lengthy period of collaboration with Danger Mouse, who is absent this time — all it took was Auerbach getting back into a room with drummer Patrick Carney. In a conversation before the album’s release,...

Spike Jonze, director of “Being John Malkovich” and “Her,” will serve as Imax Entertainment’s first “artist in residence,” Variety has learned.
The company said Jonze, an Oscar-winner who has been involved with everything from music videos for Sonic Youth to the Jackass movies, will collaborate with Imax’s leadership to find new partnerships and creative opportunities.
“When Spike and I sat down to talk about this, the ideas just flowed organically,” said Megan Colligan, president of Imax Entertainment. “He has a real sense of what’s happening in the culture and he’s been operating on the cutting edge of a lot of different spaces.”
Colligan said she hopes that Jonze is the first of many such artists in residence. The role has been created to helped the company find new and innovative ways to use its network of screens, particularly at times when there are a dearth of summer or holiday blockbusters.

Karen O & Danger Mouse’s “Lux Prima” is one of the year’s best albums so far — but it’s more than an album. “An Encounter with Lux Prima – The Art of Collaboration,” a short documentary chronicling the 18-month development of their multisensory art installation “An Encounter With Lux Prima” premieres today exclusively on Variety. Spike Jonze has revealed how exactly he filmed the music video for Karen O and Danger Mouse’s single “Woman” in only one take. The director went behind the scenes for The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, where he and the musicians created the video on the studio set a few weeks ago.
For the elaborate live video, shot in black and white, Jonze enlisted a group of dancers and choreographer Tanisha Scott to create a continuous sequence that involved audience participation and a raucous finale where O leaps on a burned out car.

Karen O and Danger Mouse have described their first-ever collaborative album Lux Prima as a “shared destination,” and by the sounds of it, space is their place. The nine-song LP is a lush journey down the milky way of their rock ’n’ roll sensibilities, meaning a bit of the signature rough-around-the-edges heaviness in Karen O’s voice converging with Danger Mouse’s star-gazing, atmospheric production.
The LP starts off ambitiously: the nine-minute title track is like a space-rock “Sicko Mode” as the tempo and even entire energy of the song...

Karen O and Danger Mouse enlisted filmmaker Spike Jonze to direct a stunning performance of their new track “Woman” on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Monday.
Filmed in black-and-white, the production featured a troupe of dancers who flanked O with intricate choreography as she tore through the thumping cut. The performance boasted several clever flourishes, including a dance section that involved audience participation – Stephen Colbert even appeared among the crowd to join in – and a wild finale that found O jumping on top of a burned-out car.

Spike Jonze has directed plenty of music videos in his time. And many of those videos are some of the most visually interesting that you’ll ever see. He’s also worked with Karen O before, on various projects including the soundtracks to both “Where the Wild Things Are” and “Her.” But what the duo did on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” is something very different.

Karen O and Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton started making noise around the same time, with a similar irreverent zest. In the early 2000s, when Karen was rampaging around the world with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, rocking fishnets-and-lipstick classics like “Maps” and “Y Control,” Danger Mouse rewrote the rulebook with his pioneering Jay-z/Beatles mash-up, The Grey Album. So Lux Prima — a meeting of minds between the punk queen and the shape-shifting avant-funk producer — feels like the work of two kindred spirits. As Karen says, “Brian is as masculine as you get,...
