American animation is in an odd place. For creators, directors, and animators, the overriding cultural stigma against animation — that it's just for kids — probably provides a great deal of frustration. That's a joke even the Oscars make. It's a perception that limits the medium and reduces any potentially heady thematic material to something bland and easily digestible. Any material directed towards adults shifts into a mélange of innuendo and pop culture references, and children are condescended to in much the same way.
But even the movies that seem tailor-made for children's sensibilities get lost in the shuffle sometimes. 2012's "Rise of the Guardians," for instance, had a slam-dunk premise and an epic scale. It was a movie that took the fears of children seriously while also providing wildly entertaining set pieces, with beautiful animation and a star-studded cast. And yet, according to The Numbers, it didn't even make its production budget back domestically.

Last we heard, a "Real Steel" television series was in development, bringing the story of prizefighting mecha bots to streaming giant Disney+. Based on Richard Matheson's 1956 short story and Shawn Levy's feature-length 2011 adaptation, the sci-fi series welcomes Levy as executive producer under his 21 Laps entertainment label, and Levy reports that the project is progressing smoothly.
Levy's 2011 "Real Steel" film observes a near-future world where human-controlled robots go toe-to-toe in professional boxing matches. Has-been prizefighter Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) tag-teams with his estranged son (Dakota Goyo) to rebuild a scrappy dilapidated sparring bot into the people's champion. It's a story about pining for the glory days and of undefeatable human resilience, and it will have you shadowboxing to Eminem's "Till I Collapse." /Film's Ethan Anderton sums up the underdog tale as "'Rocky' meets 'The Iron Giant' with a big beating Amblin heart," the kind of sports comedy...

A “Real Steel” series adaptation is in the early stages of development at Disney Plus, Variety has learned.
The potential series would be based on the 2011 film of the same name, which was itself based on the short story “Steel” by Richard Matheson.
The film took place in the not too distant future in which human boxers have been replaced by giant fighting robots. Hugh Jackman starred as a former boxer who, along with his estranged son, fixes up an old robot they find in a junkyard and turns it into a champion.
As the project is still in the very early stages, no writer is yet attached. That means it is not yet clear if the show would adhere to the events of the original film or take a different direction altogether with new characters.
Shawn Levy, who directed the “Real Steel” film, will executive produce the series via 21 Laps.

Shawn Levy is continuing the Real Steel story.
Disney+ is developing a series based on the 2011 movie that starred Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly and Anthony Mackie.
The film, directed by Levy, followed an-boxer and father, played by Jackman, and son, played by Dakota Goyo, as they reconcile years of distance and discover an obsolete junkyard sparring robot who just might be more than it seems.
The series comes from Disney Branded Television and is produced by 20th Television in association with Levy’s 21 Laps, for its sister streamer.
The platform is currently searching for a writer for the series, which is exec produced by Levy, Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke, Jacqueline Levine, Susan Montford and Don Murphy.
21 Laps is behind the recent Disney feature Free Guy, as well as Netflix’s Stranger Things.

Netflix has had a great few months of content, which has worked out well for everyone stuck inside throughout the ongoing pandemic. Huge hits like Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extraterrestrial, horror classic The Silence of the Lambs, Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods and season 4 of 13 Reasons Why have kept viewers consistently occupied this month. And today, two more films are being added to the service, though you’d be forgiven for not knowing anything about either of them.

Test audiences got such a kick out of Shawn Levy's Real Steel that a sequel was put into development months before the film actually hit theaters. Back in 2011, Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy put out a little film called Real Steel. It was a mid-budget movie based on a short story from author Richard Matheson called “Steel.” If that title sounds familiar to you, it’s because back in 1963, that story was adapted by the author himself into a Twilight Zone episode of the same name.
This adaptation from Levy had very little in common with the story or the episode, but it was still an enjoyable — albeit cheesy and somewhat forgettable little film. Performances across the board, which included Jackman, Evangeline Lily, and Dakota Goyo, who surprised me in the secondary lead role of Max Kenton. The movie didn’t kill it at the box office. It made just short of $300 million worldwide on a $80 million budget. It definitely made its money back, but it wasn’t really a money-printing machine.

It isn’t a mind-blowing epic, but it’s certainly a riveting and worthy retelling of this story. Paramount Pictures’ Noah movie will finally be released in theaters Friday, March 28th and the first reviews coming in are very positive.
Variety critic Scott Foundas calls director Darren Aronofsky’s film a, “bold, personal, visually extravagant take on the Old Testament tale.” (review)
The Hollywood Reporter’s critic, Todd McCarthy, writes, “Working on by far his biggest budget in the wake of the great global success of Black Swan, Aronofsky bulks up his film not only with naturalistic spectacle but with fantastical elements that evoke both Ray Harryhausen and Peter Jackson; creatures rise up from the sea, a whole forest takes instantaneous shape at Noah’s convenience and there is far more swordplay and fighting than one ever imagined in this story.” (review)

“Audiences can expect all the great moments of the Noah story . . . the Ark, the animals, the Nephilim, the first rainbow, the dove. But hopefully they are captured in new and unexpected ways. Instead of repeating what’s been seen before, we looked carefully at what is written in Genesis, and then created a setting on screen where we felt these miracles could take place.”

Darren Aronofsky's Noah is almost upon us and a batch of 16 new pictures have just come online along with a new "Chosen" TV Spot and a "Flood" motion poster, which is to say, Batten down the hatches, marketing ahoy! Of the pics, I found the first one on the second page the most interesting, exemplifying the size of the ark that was built for the production as Aronofsky and Jennifer Connelly chat it out. The batch of images come from Cine Marcado (via The Playlist) and among them are several shots from the film combined with behind-the-scenes looks such as the one I just described. Additionally, at the bottom of the second page is a new motion poster for the film, which itself is essentially just a brief trailer that ends with the look of the poster. You've seen 'em before, but you may be interested in this one.

We’re more curious as to how it’ll fit in a timeline that gave us Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler and Black Swan than the actual budget size of the project. Taking a page from Alfonso Cuarón’s playbook – Noah may warrant the mandatory popcorn fare a la Gravity label or will be Darren Aronofsky’s Titanic-sized shipwreck.

Darren Aronofsky’s Noah promises to bring the biblical epic back to the big screen in a way we’ve not seen in years, and with Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly reuniting to lead the cast, my ticket is guaranteed.
I’ve been looking forward to the project since it was first announced, and am glad that the countdown is down to just a matter of months.

I’ve been looking forward to the project since it was first announced, and am glad that the countdown is down to just a matter of months.

I can't help but believe everything we see from the studio won't be representative of what the final product will be when it comes to Darren Aronofsky's Noah (3/28), because if this latest poster is any indication Noah appears as if he's just another character from Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. In other news, Aronofsky recently took to Twitter to confirm the Grammy Award-winning string quartet Kronos Quartet is reuniting with composer Clint Mansell. Previous teamings included Aronofsky's The Fountain and Requiem for a Dream. Noah stars Russell Crowe, Logan Lerman, Douglas Booth, Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins, Ray Winstone, Dakota Goyo, Kevin Durand, Marton Csokas, Finn Wittrock and Nick Nolte and is an adaptation of the Biblical story of Noah's Ark. In a world ravaged by human sin, Noah (Crowe) is given a divine mission: to build an Ark to save creation from the coming flood.

What’s it take to outrace the end of the world? Well, if the end of the world happens to come in the form of a world-destroying flood, then building your own giant boat will sure help. That’s what Russell Crowe’s Noah character does in Darren Aronofsky’s “Noah”. It’s supposedly based on a bestselling book or sumthin’. I dunno, I don’t read, cause reading’s hard. Check out four new images from the film. I wonder what Russell’s doing running in the rain with his mouth open? Trying to catch water, perhaps? Maybe he’s thirsty… The Biblical Noah suffers visions of an apocalyptic deluge and takes measures to protect his family from the coming flood. Starring Russell Crowe, Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman, Anthony Hopkins, Sami Gayle, Douglas Booth, Mark Margolis, Kevin Durand, Dakota Goyo, and Ray Winstone. The rain falls next...

Damn, that’s a lot of water. Though thankfully Darren Aronofsky’s “Noah” hasn’t been filled with reports of disasters on the set like other water-based epics. “Waterworld” and “Titanic” come to mind. Then again, I’m guessing the bulk of those water scenes in “Noah” are aided by CGI, something that those two other films didn’t have a lot of help with back “in the day”. Sheesh, has it been 16 years since “Titanic”? Yup. Neeeeerrreeee, faaaaaaarr…. Ahem. Check out your first full trailer for Aronofsky’s bible tale “Noah”. Is it just me, or does the ark kind of look like a floating coffin? Yeah, that’s probably just me. Update Added a much more action-packed second trailer. As promised, following the first poster and trailer previews that surfaced yesterday, Paramount has launched the first trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s biblical epic, Noah.
Russell Crowe takes centre stage as the eponymous figure, and if you had any concerns that Aronofsky would have trouble creating a scope worthy of the tale of the Flood, then this trailer should definitely put those worries to bed. Visually, it looks to be every bit as epic as you’d hope.

Update: Added a second video with ten additional seconds of footage. A little while back a bootleg version of a three minute rough cut trailer for Darren Aronofsky's Noah found its way online and probably still can be found in some form... somewhere. It was quite obviously a very early look, there were few finished effects and just the overall appearance made it impossible to gauge just what exactly the finished project would look like. Today, however, a few brief seconds of the first trailer have arrived online as the full thing apparently premieres on Entertainment Tonight tonight and I would expect we'll have an online copy shortly thereafter if not before. Noah is set for a March 28 release despite recent talk of some head-butting between Aronofsky and Paramount over the final product as the studio apparently is more concerned about alienating the Christian audience with the portions of...

With Noah, director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, Black Swan, The Fountain) has apparently made what can best be described as a "Darren Aronofsky movie". Word surrounding the pic suggests he's taken the Biblical character and turned him into something of an extreme environmentalist. Aronofsky has said as much in the past, saying "Noah was the first environmentalist" and adding, "Hopefully they'll let me make it." Well, they did, and apparently some aspects aren't going over so well in certain circles as test screenings have started to take place. A major piece of contention seems to be the film's third act, which The Hollywood Reporter says may have the potential of alienating the huge Christian audience while screenings in New York (for a largely Jewish audience), in Arizona (Christians) and in Orange County, Calif. (general public) have all "generated troubling reactions". I hadn't heard of it until now, but apparently faith-based...

Update: It seems the report Noah was shifting dates to a Summer release is untrue. The film is still slated for a March 28, 2014 release. Originally slated to hit theaters on March 28, 2014 I just assumed Paramount was trying to play some sort of tie-in with the near-Easter release for Darren Aronofsky's Noah. After all, a trailer of sorts has already been screened for some faith-based groups, but now Paramount has pulled it from that date and will release it at an unspecified point next Summer. Whyc One guess may be because this summer was so lacking in actual, big budget adult drama they may feel there is a hole to be filled. Another guess is they may want to start releasing some marketing material such as a trailer and poster, but don't want to do so with a specific date attached that they may later have to change. Or, maybe...

Like many films before it including Prometheus and Oblivion, Noah takes advantage of the unique landscape of Iceland and a lot of that is captured in these images, many of which I have included in this post. The film has been described as a close adaptation of the Biblical story of Noah's Ark. Darren Aronofsky’s Noah has wrapped filming, but we still haven’t seen all that much that provides a solid look at the film. There were a few pictures of the main cast in character, but that was just about it – until today. We still don’t have any footage, but we do have the best look we could hope for at the phenomenally beautiful locations where the film was shot.
This series of more than 20 photos is made up mostly of shots of the landscapes where filming took place, but there are a couple new looks at the cast and various members of the production units. Unlike most set photos that hit the web, these are official, coming from the unit photographer, meaning they’re actually high quality pictures. Part of the film was shot in Iceland, and that’s where most of these photos were snapped. If this...

Director: Scott Stewart. Review: Mark Appleton. The producers of Paranormal Activity, Insidious and Sinister are back doing what they do best, a spooky horror film based around a young suburban family. Mr & Mrs Barrett live in a suburban street, in a suburban house and have two small children. On the face of it all is well but behind the scenes things aren’t that rosy since Daniel Barrett (played by Josh Hamilton) lost his job and is struggling to get a new one. Lacy Barrett (Keri Russell) works as an estate agent but isn’t bringing in enough to cover all the bills. The elder of the two sons Jesse (Dakota Goyo) tells his little brother Sam (Kadan Rockett) ghost stories at night via walkie-talkies. Unsurprisingly this gives Sam nightmares about the subject of the story, ‘The Sandman’. This all leads up to strange events that start happening to the family at nights.

“Dark Skies” adds a sci-fi twist to the currently popular run of supernatural Hollywood horror typified by the likes of “Paranormal Activity”, “Sinister”, “Insidious” and others, with aliens taking the place of daft demons. Produced by Jason Blum, who worked on the afore-mentioned hits, the film was written and directed by Scott Stewart – a name that might make some run to the hills, given that his last two outings were the entirely risible religious fantasy actioners “Legion” and “Priest”. The story is very familiar stuff indeed, following Keri Russell (“The Americans”) and Josh Hamilton (“J. Edgar”) as the suburban Barretts, a regular couple dealing with the usual economic problems while bringing up their vaguely troublesome sons. With the older Jesse (Dakota Goyo, “Real Steel”) hanging out with the local bad kid and getting into mild partying being difficult enough to deal with, matters take a turn for the weird when...

While the pacing lags a bit towards the middle, Dark Skies is an increasingly suspenseful sci-fi thriller that works well with its small budget and limited effects. Like many recent thrillers (such as Insidious), the movie does a great job creating a creepy atmosphere that slowly sucks the audience in, but runs off the rails by the end. Written and directed by Scott Stewart (Priest and Legion), the film features a small cast including Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton, Dakota Goyo, Kadan Rockett, J. K. Simmons. While trying to stay as spoiler free as possible, Dark Skies follows the events of several weeks as Daniel (Hamilton), Lacy (Russell) Barrett, along with their two sons Jesse (Goyo) and Sammy (Rockett), begin...

Of the many movies coming our way next year, Darren Aronofsky’s Noah promises to be one of the very best.
The film marks Aronofsky’s return behind the camera for the first time since 2010’s Oscar-winning Black Swan, and I can’t wait to see what he brings us with this biblical epic next spring.
Whilst we eagerly await the first trailer, a handful of new promo images have surfaced online, giving us a look at leading man Russell Crowe and some of his co-stars.
In Aronofsky’s take on the Biblical tale, Noah is a man who loves Earth and all of its animal inhabitants, but has become disillusioned with the way humans have treated their planet.
Crowe is of course front and centre as the eponymous Noah. And he is joined by a truly great cast, led by Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Douglas Booth, Anthony Hopkins,...

One of 2014's most anticipated films has got to be Darren Aronofsky's Biblical epic Noah with Russell Crowe in the title role starring alongside Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman, Douglas Booth, Emma Watson, Anthony Hopkins, Ray Winstone, Kevin Durand, Martin Csokas and Dakota Goyo to name a few. Today a batch of six new pictures featuring Crowe, Hopkins, Watson Connelly, Lerman and Winstone have arrived in what look like what you'd expect character posters to look like. Just slap a title treatment, "Coming Soon" and a Paramount logo on there and you have yourself a character poster... or maybe a new age, Biblical trading card. Darren Aronofsky’s biblical epic Noah doesn’t hit theaters until Spring of 2014, but its filming in Iceland provided us with quite a few looks at the A-list cast in character. Today, we’ve got even better shots than we’ve seen before, with images highlighting Russell Crowe, Emma Watson, Anthony Hopkins, and more.
These new images (which we’ve collected and put in a gallery for you at the bottom of the page) are in an aspect ratio usually reserved for posters, and honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if these same pictures will be hanging in your local theater sometime later this year. All these images are of poster quality and would make for great promotional pieces, especially the image of Russell Crowe as Noah.

Chicago – For a good portion of its running time, Scott Stewart’s sci-fi spookfest “Dark Skies” flirts with the possibility of becoming an effective thriller. There are a handful of sequences fraught with palpable tension, yet it becomes apparent around the halfway mark that the filmmakers don’t have an original idea in their heads. There’s nothing here that hasn’t been done better in countless other pictures.
