At a small White House event Tuesday between President Joe Biden and a group of Muslim American leaders, tensions were high and morale was low.
At one point, one of the six attendees showed Biden printed photos of malnourished Palestinian children, according to NBC News. The president said that he had seen the pictures before, but that was unlikely: The attendee, a doctor, said the photos were from her own phone.

CNN is turning some of the lights out on its efforts to produce morning news.
The network is revamping its entire A.M. schedule as the Warner Bros. Discovery-based cable news outlet continues to grapple with poor ratings.
Poppy Harlow and Phil Mattingly, who co-anchor “CNN This Morning,” will leave the line-up, while Kasie Hunt’s early-morning program will take on an extra hour. Her show, “Early Start,” will run from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m., and will take on the “CNN This Morning” title. CNN will then move “CNN News Central,” anchored by John Berman, Kate Bolduan and Sara Sidner, to a 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. slot, with Jim Acosta and Pamela Brown taking over new hours at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

CNN anchor Laura Coates has moved to CAA for representation, a move that could signal a new era of influence for the talent-agency giant at the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed news outlet.
In a broad overhaul of CNN’s schedule, Coates was recently named to anchor a new 11 p.m. hour at CNN, “Laura Coates Live,” where she will follow Abby Philip, who will hold forth at 10. CAA also represents Erin Burnett, who anchors CNN’s 7 p.m. hour. All told, CAA will represent two of five of the anchors who appear during CNN’s schedule between 7 p.m. to midnight., which usually represent some of the network’s most-watched hours.
In years past, CNN’s primetime was dominated by rival agency UTA, which continues to have a strong roster at CNN. The agency represents Philip — who left CNN for UTA — as well as Anderson Cooper, Jake Tapper, Don Lemon and Alisyn Camerota.

Boris Sanchez is one of three anchors on CNN News Central and made his debut Monday afternoon hosting alongside Brianna Keilar and Jim Sciutto.
The Cuban-born journalist recently said in an interview that taking on this new gig was something “personal” for him.
“When my family came to the United States and landed in Miami, the day that I turned 3, that idea that democracy is something worth fighting for that it is something you must protect, that it is worthy of sacrifice, has always stuck with me,” Sanchez told Forbes.
Sanchez recalled that his mother dreamt of becoming a journalist growing up and that inspired him to pursue a career in journalism.
“I love writing, I love telling stories, I love going out and talking to interesting people and experiencing everything that the world has to offer,” he said.

Kate Bolduan’s next shift on CNN hasn’t started quite yet, but she’s acting as if it has. A group of cameras is flocking around the news anchor in a New York studio that has recently been updated, and she presses producers to let her rehearse a story she needs to have mastered by the time she gets on air. “We don’t want to get this half right,” she tells those listening to her.
Neither does the news network.
Bolduan and five of her on-air colleagues, along with dozens of crew members and producers working in New York, Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, are taking part in a major TV-news experiment that is going to play out each weekday for the foreseeable future at CNN. The journey from speculation to information can be a twisty one.
Many of the nation’s biggest TV-news outlets started their Tuesday-evening Election Night broadcast under the premise that Republicans were about to take significant share of Congress from their Democratic rivals. Within the first ten minutes of CBS News’ coverage, for example, Major Garrett and Anthony Salvanto unveiled a graphic projecting that the majority of races for seats in the U.S. House would lean red. During Fox News Channel’s coverage, opinion host Jesse Watters joined Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum to tell them he was hearing “good anecdotes” about voters in pivotal Western states.
Just before midnight, however, NBC News raised eyebrows by telling viewers it was indeed possible that the Republicans might just end up with only a few extra House seats, narrowing the party’s ability to govern. Within an hour, most major outlets were...

CNN’s primetime plans won’t involve Jake Tapper.

CNN chief executive Chris Licht is betting big on his handpicked co-host combo of Don Lemon, Poppy Harlow and Katilin Collins to deliver a win with his morning show reboot, “CNN This Morning.”
As more layoffs loom and his primetime anchor experiments produce unease in the company and tepid ratings so far, Licht is in desperate need of solid results that can win over the trust of a weary and wary staff who have been shaken by the changes Licht has made since he took over the news network last spring under new corporate owner Warner Bros. A change in CNN’s morning was definitely necessary. Over the past year, “New Day” averaged just 414,000 total viewers — its smallest morning audience since 2015 — compared with 839,00 for MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and 1.36 million for Fox News’ “Fox & Friends.”

The 9 Pm Et slot has been filled with a rotating series of hosts since Chris Cuomo was fired last December. Last month, CNN announced that Tapper would host the primetime show through the election but hasn’t said whether the changes would be permanent.
“We’re going to try to bring you a new kind of show in primetime,” Tapper said on State of the Union on Sunday. “We’re going to try to go a little deeper on an issue or two of the day. We’re going to try to have longer conversations with newsmakers and experts from all facets of our lives.

Donald Trump fired off his latest defamation lawsuit against a news outlet Monday, this time seeking 475 million in punitive damages from CNN over what his lawyers say was an effort to “defame the Plaintiff in the minds of its viewers and readers for the purpose of defeating him politically.”
Trump’s lawsuit (read it here) focuses on references made by CNN on-air figures to the “Big Lie,” or the former president’s unfounded claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him. Trump contends that the references compare him to Adolf Hitler.
“CNN’s highly defamatory and persistent association of the Plaintiff to Hitler and Hitler’s ‘Big Lie’ is no mistaken misappropriation,” Trump’s attorneys write. “It is wanton and malicious ‘reporting’ intended to feed a narrative and to achieve a desired end: to cause readers and viewers to associate the Plaintiff with the lowest of low, to fear him,...

New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman on Friday labeled former president Donald Trump as the “biggest demagogue” in politics the country has seen “in modern memory,” and “possibly in the history of the country.”
In an unusually blunt statement for a reporter, Haberman told CNN’s “New Day” anchors John Berman and Brianna Keilar that the recent suit brought by New York State attorney general Letitia James against the Trump Organization, Trump and his adult children touches on sore points for the former president.
“There’s no question that having a prosecutor stand up there and say he is not worth what he claims – he has made all kinds of statements about his finances that are not true – is something that he has tried to avoid for many, many decades,” Haberman said. “On a personal level for him, that cuts a little differently.”

CNN is shaking up its programming lineup, albeit only on a temporary basis ahead of November’s midterm elections.
The biggest changes are happening in primetime, where CNN CEO Chris Licht is giving anchor Jake Tapper the 9 p.m. hour, with anchor Alisyn Camerota and legal analyst Laura Coates sharing the 10 p.m. – 12 a.m. hours.
9 Pm has been vacant since CNN fired Chris Cuomo last year, with a variety of anchors filling in during that time. Tapper will give the hour some stability, at least through the midterms.
Lemon, meanwhile, has held fort at 10 p.m., but will be shifting to the mornings later this year alongside Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins. Lemon and Harlow will host their last shows in their current timeslots Oct. 7 so they can prepare for the new morning show.

CNN is shuffling its primetime lineup for midterms, with Jake Tapper moving to primetime to helm the 9 p.m. Et hour, previously anchored by Chris Cuomo.
Meanwhile, Alisyn Camerota and Laura Coates will take over Don Lemon’s two-hour block starting Oct. 7 as Lemon signs off “Don Lemon Tonight” for the final time as he begins his transition to hosting CNN’s morning show. Lemon will, however, still appear on the network in the run up to the Am show’s launch later this year.
The new schedule goes into effect starting Oct. 10 and runs through the week of the Nov. 8 elections.

CNN is filling in some of the gaps in its nightly schedule, at least through the midterms, with Jake Tapper hosting CNN Tonight at 9 Pm Et, and Alisyn Camerota and Laura Coates sharing anchor duties in the 10 Pm-midnight block.
The lineup is scheduled to run Oct. 10 to Nov. 8.
The changes are not permanent, at least not yet. The network’s chairman and CEO Chris Licht has significant holes to fill in CNN’s nightly schedule. A series of substitute hosts have anchored the 9 Pm Et slot since Chris Cuomo was fired ate last year. There also is a pending vacancy later in the evening, as Don Lemon is taking a new role as one of three new morning hosts.
The moves suggest a desire to bring some stability to the schedule in the lead up to the midterms, when viewership is expected to tick up across the news networks.

Jake Tapper, Laura Coates and Alisyn Camerota will take on temporary assignments on CNN’s primetime schedule as the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed network prepares to cover the run-up to the 2022 midterm elections.
Tapper, CNN’s chief Washington correspondent, will host the network’s 9 p.m. from Washington, while Camerota and Laura Coates will share anchor responsibilities between 10 p.m. and midnight. New CNN boss Chris Licht’s latest — and biggest — shakeup of the news network’s lineup signals an attempt to hit two (or three) birds with one stone.
By shifting Don Lemon from his 10 p.m. Et perch after a seven-year run, Licht is eliminating the lowest-rated show in primetime cable news, according to August ratings from Nielsen Media Research — while also quieting critics who have targeted Lemon’s opinionated hosting style. And by tapping Lemon to lead the network’s as-yet-untitled new morning show alongside Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins, Licht also aims to give new life to another key part of the schedule that has long lagged behind MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and Fox News’ “Fox and Friends” in viewership.

Chris Licht made his first big programming move at CNN with the announcement that Don Lemon will leave primetime (and his post-primetime hour) to anchor a new morning show with Poppy Harlow (who is leaving 9 a.m.) and Kaitlan Collins. For those who mourn the loss of “Don Lemon Tonight,” here’s the thing: It was failing.
“Chris is redeploying our talent in ways he thinks make sense and will resonate,” a CNN spokesperson told IndieWire on Thursday. “This won’t be the last.”
“Don Lemon Tonight” is in last place in viewers across CNN, Fox News Channel, and MSNBC, in both hours. The primetime hour at 10 is down 42 percent year-to-year in total viewers and 48 percent in the key news demographic of adults 25-54, according to Nielsen. The 11 p.m. hour is down 35 percent and 45 percent, respectively.

CNN is hoping to wake up its morning schedule.
The Warner Bros. Chris Licht, CNN’s chairman and chief executive, has had some of his greatest career success in morning news, having launched MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and retooled the program once known as “CBS This Morning.”
The new CNN program, retitled and with a new set, is expected to debut later this year — and looks to emulate some of the formats Licht has led in the past. On Friday morning, CNN CEO Chris Licht addressed the decision to cancel the Sunday show Reliable Sources, and told staff on the news channel’s 9 a.m. editorial call that there will be more changes to come.
“I want to acknowledge that this is a time of significant change, and I know that many of you are unsettled,” Licht said, according to multiple people on the call. “There will be more changes, and you might not understand it or like it.”
CNN’s decision to cancel Brian Stelter’s show brought renewed anxiety to the halls of 30 Hudson Yards, according to multiple CNN staffers.
While Licht has made it clear since he began that there would be changes coming to CNN’s lineup, and not just to its streaming strategy, those plans “hadn’t really sunk in yet,” said one of the staffers.

And now some news about the news program that covers the news.
“Reliable Sources,” the media-news program that has been on CNN since 1993, is the latest piece of content to go on the chopping block under the cost-cutting regime of Warner Bros. Discovery. The CNN image for the past few years has been embodied by passionate on-air personalities like Don Lemon or Brianna Keilar. These days, it might best be symbolized by beat reporters like Jamie Gangel or Kaitlan Collins.
Gone in recent weeks (for the most part) are what had become the network’s signature red-versus-blue showdowns between hot-talking contributors or segments that hinge on an anchor scolding an interviewee. This is the kind of stuff that typically gives cable-news a viral boost. In its place, CNN is trying something else: the news.
And it could guide what three people familiar with the network say will be some sort of recalibration of on-air talent that could become more apparent this fall.

Ever since Jeff Zucker seized the reins at CNN in early 2013, the cable-news network has been one of loudest voices in media circles. Now, even though Discovery didn’t push the executive out, there’s a sense the company will, after it buys CNN along with the rest of WarnerMedia, look to turn down the volume.
In the Zucker era, CNN became more swashbuckling, more colorful, and indeed, more opinionated than it ever was under the aegis of its founder Ted Turner, or his successors at the former Time Warner. CNN went from delivering headlines to being in the headlines. It’s hard to imagine previous CNN leaders like Walter Isaacson or Tom Johnson encouraging moments like the one when Don Lemon in 2018 uttered, “This is CNN Tonight. I’m Don Lemon. The president of the United States is racist.” But Zucker pushed CNN to be blunt and unstinting in...

CNN launched a new show, “Democracy in Peril,” two weeks ago in the 9 p.m. Et slot, which was previously occupied by ousted anchor Chris Cuomo. Ratings are in for the first two hosts, Brianna Keilar and Jim Acosta, and so far, the new program has not stopped the viewership decline. Keilar was up first last week, helming the show at its outset. From Monday of last week to Monday of this week, CNN’s 9 p.m. hour averaged 556,000 total viewers, of whom just 139,000 were in the advertiser-coveted age demographic of 25 to 54. Compare that to Fox News’ Sean Hannity, whose competing program averaged 2.985 million total viewers Monday to Monday, with 426,000 in the demo, on average. CNN’s average total viewership number was closer to what Fox News pulled in the demo alone than it was to competing with Hannity’s total viewership. Rachel Maddow’s 9 p.m. show on MSNBC...

Let’s get after it: Even as CNN puts much of its energy into launching a new streaming-video hub, it’s also trying to figure out how to replace Chris Cuomo in its pivotal 9 p.m. time slot.
Some staffers at the WarnerMedia network believe CNN has been holding the equivalent of on-air tryouts in recent weeks, turning over the 9 p.m. hour to hosts like Michael Smerconish, Laura Coates and Brianna Keilar. Jim Acosta, the former White House reporter turned weekend anchor, takes a turn this week. Both he and Keilar have held forth under the program banner, “Democracy in Peril,” a show that. at least in its early hours, a little like Ted Koppel’s “Nightline.” “We are taking a closer look at the state of our country, the threats to our political system and possible solutions for reversing the divisiveness that is tearing America apart,” said Keilar,...

Chris Cuomo is, once again, making headlines instead of delivering them.
CNN said Monday that is was placing new scrutiny on the actions its most popular anchor took when his brother Andrew, the former governor of New York, was facing accusations of sexual harassment that eventually led him in August to give up his role as New York’s top politician.
The WarnerMedia-owned outlet said in a statement that new revelations about how Chris Cuomo aided his brother, released today by the New York State Attorney General, “deserve a thorough review and consideration.” The documents indicate the younger Cuomo’s assistance was more pronounced and significant than previously known, and included the CNN anchor reaching out to sources and doing active research to help his sibling. At the start of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, Cuomo and his brother became a popular media spectacle when they started doing interviews during CNN’s 9 p.

Caitlyn Jenner said Tuesday that she’s “Ok with” the new anti-abortion law in Texas, but claimed she still supports a person’s right to choose the outcome of their pregnancy.
“I am for a woman’s right to choose. I am also for a state having the ability to make their own laws,” Jenner, who is a Republican candidate in California’s gubernatorial recount election, told CNN’s Brianna Keilar. “So I support Texas in that decision. That’s their decision. I’m Ok with that.”
She added that she doesn’t anticipate “any changes” to California’s existing abortion laws.
The law banning abortions after six weeks took effect in Texas at midnight last Tuesday, with no action from the Supreme Court to put the law on hold. That inaction, and the law itself, drew fierce criticism from many other women in Hollywood and politics alike.

CNN’s Brianna Keilar and John Berman became visibly and audibly emotional Friday while speaking to the father of a baby hospitalized with Covid-19.
Kyle Butrum, the father of one-year-old Carter, urged “New Day” viewers to get vaccinated, saying, “The gravity of the situation is there’s nothing you can do to help me. I can’t go to the hospital. I can’t even help me. There’s nothing you can do to help the family members. There’s nothing you can do. The only thing you can do to prevent someone else from doing this is to get your vaccine so that another child doesn’t have to do this and another family doesn’t have to send their kid away, so another father doesn’t have to stand at the back of an ambulance and wonder if that’s the last time you’re going to see your son.

CNN’s John Berman put the blame for the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic squarely on the shoulders of the unvaccinated Thursday morning.
“This is now a pandemic of the unvaccinated. It is now a pandemic of choice — the choice not to get vaccinated — and it’s a choice that’s having a profound impact, a bad one, on the rest of us,” said the “New Day” anchor. “The facts bear it out.”
Berman said most officials have been “too polite” to bluntly lay the blame for recent surges in hospitalizations and deaths on those who haven’t been vaccinated. “Frankly, the blame doesn’t need their help,” he said. “It’s placing itself. It’s just obvious. If the unvaccinated are not to blame, who is?”
Co-anchor Brianna Keilar jumped in to point out that only 49% of Americans are vaccinated, which she called “a far cry” from the projected herd immunity...

CNN’s “New Day” hit a seven-year low in the advertiser-coveted age demographic of viewers from 25 to 54 in July. It was the least-watched cable news program in the demo for the month.
The drop came after an anchor shuffle at “New Day” and a series of viral clips aimed at correcting Covid-19 misinformation and hitting rival network Fox News for its opinion programming on the vaccine.
Here’s how the numbers broke down in July, according to Nielsen Media Research ratings data: Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” averaged 1.1 million viewers from 6 a.m. Et to 9 a.m. Et. Of those, 200,000 were in the demo. MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” took in an average of 903,000 total viewers, of whom 117,000 were between 25 and 54. CNN brought in 450,000 total average viewers for “New Day” in that time slot, and of those, only 84,000 were in the key demo.

CNN's Brianna Keilar does think it's a little bit ironic Sen. Ted Cruz is criticizing Texas Democrats for their Covid-era travel.
"Texas state Democrats finishing up week two of their sabbatical in Washington and objectively, it's been a PR nightmare. Their reason for leaving their state: to call attention to unprecedented voter restrictions but that has been overshadowed by their trip becoming a superspreader event," she said, before rolling a clip of Cruz calling the Democratic trip a "stunt."
Keilar said, "Now, love or hate this sojourn by Texas state Dems, the last person who should be chiming in about political stunts is Ted Cruz. It's like a black fly in your chardonnay or a death row pardon two minutes too late -- but then, Cruz must have missed track number 10 on the 1995 masterpiece, 'Jagged Little Pill,'" said Keilar.
