Today in 2003 Avenue Q opened at the John Golden Theatre, where it ran for 2534 performances. Avenue Q was conceived by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, who wrote the music and lyrics. The book was written by Jeff Whitty and the show was directed by Jason Moore. Avenue Q is an 'autobiographical and biographical' coming-of-age parable, addressing and satirizing the issues and anxieties associated with entering adulthood. It opened Off-Broadway in March 2003, co-produced by The New Group and the Vineyard Theatre, and later won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and spawned Las Vegas and West End productions, two national tours, and a variety of international productions.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler is back together again as siblings in Sisters.
The comedy movie was a box office hit this past winter by earning more than $87 million and dare to open against Star Wars: The Force Awakens that weekend.
Now the movie is currently available on Digital HD and on Blu-Ray/DVD next Tuesday, March 15.
The two comediennes always have perfect chemistry by first starting to appear together in the heydays of Saturday Night Live and starring in the movies together for Mean Girls, Baby Mama and Anchorman 2.
Here’s the synopsis: When the Ellis sisters, the always-responsible Maura (Poehler) and impossibly hotheaded Kate (Fey), receive word from their retired mom and dad that their family home is on the market, they discover they have one weekend left to clean out the old junk in their bedroom. As they comb through the artifacts of their teen years,...

One of the worst things about the plethora of goofball comedies to hit theaters over the last decade, especially those that include SNL alumni, is that when something like Sisters comes along, it’s usually hard to differentiate it from the pack.
That makes it something of a surprise when it turns out to be really good, and it shouldn’t work that way.
Luckily, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have enough of a track record that most audiences are likely able to read between the lines of the less-than-stellar trailers. Or, they may just sell well enough that the trailers don’t matter.
Either way, easily one of the best comedies last year is headed home on March 15th, with a bit of an early window for the digital release, which is already available.

This is definitely the time of year when film critic types (I’m sure you know who I mean) spend an inordinate amount of time leading up to awards season—and it all leads up to awards season, don’t it?—compiling lists and trying to convince anyone who will listen that it was a shitty year at the movies for anyone who liked something other than what they saw and liked. And ‘tis the season, or at least ‘thas (?) been in the recent past, for that most beloved of academic parlor games, bemoaning the death of cinema, which, if the sackcloth-and-ashes-clad among us are to be believed, is an increasingly detached and irrelevant art form in the process of being smothered under the wet, steaming blanket of American blockbuster-it is. And it’s going all malnourished from the siphoning off of all the talent back to TV, which, as everyone knows,...

If you’re a studio planning a bit of counterprogramming for the juggernaut that is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a raunchy party comedy with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler seems like a pretty clever play. At a starry-eyed first glance, Jason Moore‘s Sisters does indeed appear to contain the right kind of crazy for audiences hankering to see Fey and Poehler together again on the big screen following Baby Mama. Outside of a few amusing cameos and the genuine, earnest energy of the two leads, Sisters unfortunately falls short of its pedigree and talent.
Unsurprisingly, all of the best bits of Sisters come courtesy of the headlining comediennes at its center, who sally forth defiantly against a script by Paula Pell that gender-bends 80’s raging-party antics without doing anything new with them. Fey and Poehler star as the titular sisters Kate and Maura Ellis, a duo that essentially...

Sisters
Written by Paula Pell
Directed by Jason Moore
USA, 2015
Sisters is juvenile, irretrievably vulgar, and has no redeeming social value whatsoever. It also delivers plenty of huge laughs and is required viewing for fans of slob comedies. Director Jason Moore lays down a simple premise and then lets his talented comedy troupe mine each gag to its tasteless extreme. Sure, it gets a bit too broad at times, but these broads are funny! Sisters is a great holiday movie for anyone who was too rowdy to sit at the adult’s table for Christmas dinner.
For people of a certain age, Sisters might push uncomfortably close to their real-life experience. It’s the story of two 40-something sisters; one an irrepressible free spirit and the other an uber-responsible den mother. Kate Ellis (Tina Fey) describes herself as “brassy,” but a better description might be “emotionally stalled.” She can’t hold a job,...

Television has come a long way in recent years where respectability is concerned, but there is still one potential problem for any actor who stars in a long-running show: typecasting. For example, Tina Fey played the straight-edge, workaholic Liz Lemon on 30 Rock for so long that audiences have come to directly identify her with the role. As it turns out, this wound up having a significant effect on the new movie Sisters, as it was getting away from the Liz Lemon persona that led her to take on the wilder protagonist role in the film. I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Sisters director Jason Moore to talk about the upcoming comedy, and part of our conversation centered on the dynamic created between Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in the movie. Referencing the last movie that the two actress made together - Baby Mama - I asked if...

The just-right mix of wistfulness, snark, and painful personal growth makes this nonstop hilarious, with humor that gets women in a way movies rarely do. I’m “biast” (pro): love Amy Poehler and Tina Fey
I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of grossout comedies

Hooray. Yay. Yes. This. So much this.
Women behaving badly. Women refusing to grow up. I mean, I would love it if The Movies reverted back to the days of Bringing Up Baby and The Thin Man, with men and women actually believing that 40something is cool, and dressing for dinner and having cocktails at six and solving mysteries and secretly aiding the resistance and such. But if that’s not going to happen, and movies are going to be overpopulated by manchildren playing video games and ogling women and wallowing in haphazard celebrations of adolescent testosterone,...

"We can not have a party..." Where will you be at the weekend of December 18th? Hopefully in theaters celebrating the return of Han and Chewie and Leia. But if every show is sold out and you still have to see something, this is one of the alternatives - Sisters. It's a comedy starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as sisters who return to their home town and decided to throw one last raging party. It opens the same day as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which means it's fairly smart counter-programming to offer up to everyone not interested in space operas. I definitely won't be seeing this, but some of you may have no choice. Enjoy! Here's the newest trailer (#3) for Jason Moore's Sisters, directly on YouTube (via Collider): You can catch the first official trailer for Sisters here, if you want to see even more footage from this.

Naked bodies are a tried and true way to sell, well, just about anything, and movies are no exception. While they don’t normally go in for using sex to hawk their films and shows, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have stripped down to pump up their upcoming comedy Sisters, posing naked in a bathtub for a new poster. Take a look for yourself below. This poster doesn’t tell you much, or really anything, about the plot of Sisters, but it gives you a decent idea of what kind of humor to expect. Then again, if you’re a fan of either Fey or Poehler, you can probably guess what kind of movie is coming your way, though this time it does seem to skew towards raunchier territory than the things the comedians are most known for. Before we even go any further, it's worth pointing out that the short lists for directors on big projects isn't always that accurate. For example, James Wan wasn't on a rumored list for Furious 7, nor was Scott Derrickson on the reported list for Doctor Strange, and both directors landed those projects. But it can be fun to speculate on a movie's future based on the names getting tossed around, and in the case of the new Spider-Man reboot, the list and its accompanying rumor is pretty telling. According to Deadline, Marvel and Sony have narrowed the competition down to six names, two of whom would be directing together. They are: Jonathan Levine (All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, Warm Bodies) Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) Ted Melfi (St. Vincent) Jason Moore...

There is a terrifically unkind way to report today's story, and a quick scan of Twitter should give you some idea of just how strong a reaction some people are having to the short list of directors that Deadline claims are in the mix to direct Sony's upcoming reboot of "Spider-Man." First thought: Miller and Lord are making the wrong movie for the studio. Second thought: why is this so difficult for Sony? After all, the original "Spider-Man" was a huge milestone in terms of how superheroes were treated on film. Sam Raimi got the tone so right it was ridiculous, and no matter what choices he made in the film, he proved that Spider-Man could work, and that he could bring the colorful world of Marvel Comics to the screen in a way that the whole world could enjoy. Was that really just 13 years ago? I can still remember...

It was only a few months ago that Universal Pictures unleashed our first look at the new Tina Fey-Amy Poehler comedy Sisters, but that was merely a 20 second sneak peek. Tonight at CinemaCon the studio delivered a full blown sizzle reel for the Jason Moore-directed feature, and the movie honestly looks absolutely hilarious. The footage wasted absolutely no time at all demonstrating the sisterly chemistry shared between Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, kicking things off with the two driving around in a suburban area when they spot a guy (Ike Barenholtz) gardening in his front yard. Attracted, they pull over to the side of the road and actually start cat-calling him, making suggestions about him doing .some work on [their] bushes.. While it.s Fey.s character that really gets this started, it.s clearly Poehler.s character who is a bit more attracted to him, and after...

Lori Moore arrived at her 15-year high school reunion eager to introduce classmates to her new boyfriend, Lance Griffel. It seemed like it would be a great night: the East Peoria High class of 1999 had selected Fifth Quarter Sports Bar and Pizzeria as their venue. Turnout was high and the bar was full of thirtysomethings in their best dressy casual outfits. "It was really crowded," a patron tells People, "It was really easy to tell who was there for the reunion, because they came really dressed up. Everyone was hugging each other and telling each other how good they looked.

New York — Archie's old Riverdale gang is headed to the big screen.
Warner Bros. will produce a live-action film based on the comic's characters, including Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead, Archie Comics announced Thursday. It will be the first feature film for the 72-year-old comic.
Directing will be Jason Moore, who helmed the 2012 high school musical comedy "Pitch Perfect." "Glee" writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is penning the script.
In an interview Thursday, Aguirre-Sacasa said the present-day film will be "a quintessential teen movie."
"The idea for this is to capture a very truthful, authentic coming-of-age story with these kids that includes heartache, that includes pain, that will obviously temper the fun and the hijinks," said Aguirre-Sacasa. "It's going to be a fun – hopefully – summer movie, but we're not shying away from the truth and the awkwardness and the growing pains of being a teenager."

At first glance, it may seem like Archie Comics are a little too straight-laced and happy-go-lucky to make into a live action film in the year 2013. Despite that, a new report from Deadline says that Warner Brothers has inked a deal to bring Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and the rest of the gang to the big screen. But, it is possible that they won't be doing a traditional Archie tale. The script for this Archie movie, which will be directed by Jason Moore, is going to be written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. In addition to other credits (like the upcoming "Carrie" remake), Aguirre-Sacasa made...

At ABC‘s upfront, there were a few things that the network wanted to make sure you knew. 1) They are really impressed with the idea that people are going to watch Rebel Wilson do just about anything, and 2) There isn’t anything they’re happier about than bringing you more episodes of television created by Shonda Rhimes.
On these notes, the network would love for you to know that more Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal are coming your way. These, ABC would like to impress upon you (as advertisers) are really good shows. Because… hellllooo… so many people watch them that we’re bringing them back. But wait, don’t think that you’re as excited as you can get yet, because if those are your favorite shows, then we have a new one for you to fall in love with, Betrayal.
Also on the agenda, and actually looking like they might be interesting,...

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the third announced earlier today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on ABC.
The network is changing up some of its serialized dramas - removing random repeats in favor of two "uninterrupted runs" of twelve episodes each (one in the fall, one in the spring) for shows like "Once Upon A Time," "Grey’s Anatomy," "Scandal" and "Revenge". The large gaps between the two half-seasons will be bridged by "limited series" designed around only 12-13 episode seasons.
Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen including the high-profile "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" rip-off "Gothica", McG's rip-off of Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet" entitled "Westside", the series based on Disneyland's Big Thunder Mountain ride, the Annie Potts-led "Murder in Manhattan" about...

Exclusive: Mandy Moore is set as one of the leads in ABC’s single-camera comedy pilot Pulling, based on the praised 2006 British series. The pilot, written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky and directed by Jason Moore, revolves around three dysfunctional women in their 30s living their lives the way they want, even if society tells them they should have it all figured out by this point. Moore plays one of them, Louise, who is optimistic and desperate to snag a husband — but her man-hungry tactics typically backfire. ABC Studios and Kapital Entertainment produce, with Sharon Horgan and Dennis Kelly, creators of the original series, executive producing with Eisenberg, Stupnitsky and Aaron Kaplan. ABC has long had its eye on Moore. The network produced a comedy pilot starring the actress last season and earlier this season bought a Rich Appel comedy project she was attached to with a put pilot commitment.

Thirty-seven-year-old actress Elizabeth Banks, star of numerous recent hits such as Role Models and Zack and Miri Make a Porno, has signed on to produce Perfect Pitch, a comedy about a college a capella group. No specific plot details have been released yet but it’s the sort of idea that seemed increasingly likely to transform onto the big screen given the popularity of things like High School Musical and Glee. [Variety]
Banks has only produced one film before in her relatively young career, and that was the 2009 Bruce Willis starrer, Surrogates which was neither a critical success nor a commercial one.
She will produce Pitch Perfect with her husband Max Handelman through their Brownstones Productions company. There is no word on why she had chosen this particular project to produce, but one reason might be the fact it’s being written by 30 Rock scribe Kay Cannon, a show on which she acted on for 13 episodes.

Congrats, I guess, to Universal for finding a gap in the film market and that movie about a college capella group that literally four people on the planet had been dying to see is coming true. Variety reports that the studio will distribute a new movie from Gold Circle Films titled Pitch Perfect and although no firm plot details have emerged yet, we do know it’s about a backing vocals singing group.
Pitch Perfect will be scripted by 30 Rock writer Kay Cannon and directed by Tony Award winning Avenue Q Broadway helmer Jason Moore. It’s based on the non-fiction book by Mickey Rapkin about the rivalry between stateside universities which we have to presume will be the plot of the film;
According to GQ senior editor Rapkin, today’s lively collegiate a cappella groups boast hip-hop repertory, professional vocal arrangements, competitions at Lincoln Center and a world shrunk by the Internet.

Tim Tebow got a glowing profile from the Washington Post, in which the writer seemed to almost find him childlike for an NFL player. Oddly, or perhaps not, he answered all sorts of personal questions about his faith, dating, growing up, that he's saving himself for marriage, but when asked his views on marriage equality, his publicist interrupted the conversation and refused to let him answer.
While I'm writing this, the Village Voice staff is still negotiating their new contract. But by the time you read it, they may have gone on strike to protest wage and benefit cuts. Is Michael Musto actually a union member?
Unlikely Friendships is an unlikely success story. But the images will turn that frown upside down!
Judging by all these reviews, critics are having a very hard time saying something nice about Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon. But they sure are trying.

Universal and Gold Circle Films have joined forces to buy the worldwide rights to Pitch Perfect. Deadline reports that the project is "a musical comedy set in the world of college a cappella groups." Directing the film is Jason Moore from a screenplay by Kay Cannon. The project is based on Mickey Rapkin's nonfiction book Pitch Perfect: The Quest for Collegiate A Cappella Glory.
The film is being financed and produced by Gold Circle along with Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman via their Brownstone Productions. Moore is best known for directing various TV episodes and Shrek the Musical and Avenue Q on Broadway.
I am not a huge fan of musicals, but this sounds like a interesting project. What are your thoughts?
