Dolly Parton honored Tom Petty with a gorgeous cover of his 1985 song, “Southern Accents,” which will appear on the upcoming tribute compilation Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty.
“Southern Accents” is a tender ballad about Southern roots and a down-on-his luck Florida orange-picker. Parton stays faithful to the original, adding her own country twang, and juicing the poignancy further with a music video filled with old archival footage of Petty.
“I was fortunate enough to get to know Tom over the years,” Parton said in a statement.

Dolly Parton has revealed her reimagined rendition of Tom Petty’s song “Southern Accents” for the forthcoming compilation, Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty.
The song features a prologue delivered by the late Tom Petty himself describing how the moment of inspiration that led to “Southern Accents.” Dolly Parton then provides an emotional, stirring rendition of the song, kept at the same balladeer tempo as Petty’s original. She retains much of the song, though she adds a crucial change to the song’s latter third when belting “Yes I’m proud to be what I am/ A southern girl from a southern town/ I ain’t ashamed, I ain’t ashamed, I ain’t ashamed.”

In Its Usual High Nashville Style, the World Famous Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge Birthday Bash was rolling. At the renowned honky-tonk on this mid-September night, cover bands and rowdy bachelorette parties ruled. But at around 10 p.m., all eyes were on a stage smack in the middle of the city’s Broadway entertainment district. There, a red-headed and red-bearded guy of six feet six, in a T-shirt and baggy pants, cradled a Gretsch acoustic guitar. He looked more like a member of the stage crew than a Nashville star, but...

Zz Top were never really a ballad band. Think “La Grange,” “Tush,” and “Legs.” But for 1986’s Afterburner they tried their hand at a power ballad with “Rough Boy” — this was the Eighties after all. Earlier this week in Nashville, Keith Urban put his own spin on “Rough Boy” at a special event honoring Zz Top’s Billy Gibbons.
Urban was in attendance for the annual BMI Troubadour dinner, an industry event held each September by the performing-rights org to salute a select artist as its “Troubadour.” Last year’s went to Lucinda Williams,...

Oliver Anthony set foot in Nashville for the first time this weekend, making his Music City debut not at the Grand Ole Opry or the Ryman Auditorium, but at the annual birthday-party-slash-block-party thrown by Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. Bahamas’ entire aesthetic is one of taking the piss. The Sad Hunk title of his last album, his Zoolander press photos shot at the gym, and even his very stage name suggest he’s telling a joke with an awfully long punchline. But on his new album Bootcut, the Canadian creative born Afie Jurvanen couldn’t be more genuine. Or as they love to say in country music, “authentic.”
Bootcut, as its title implies, is a collection of country-inspired ballads fleshed out with steel guitar, thoughtful lyrics, and a guest spot by Vince Gill.

With his signature one-liner — “It’s good to be here, it’s good to be anywhere” — Keith Richards emerged onstage at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday night to sing with Willie Nelson at the second of the country legend’s two 90th birthday concerts. Together onstage, Richards, 79, and Nelson, 90 plus a day, made their case as the ultimate survivors. They sang about it, too, capping a two-song performance with Billy Joe Shaver’s eternal “Live Forever.”
But first, they revisited “We Had It All,” which they performed back in 2004 at the Wiltern in L.

The country music community gathered today at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville to remember one of their own. As it might be expected, the best way to honor and memorialize one of the genre’s greatest hitmakers was found in song.

“It’s so weird, yet so natural, to be in front of (the fans), our chosen family for 38 years,” Wynonna Judd said near the end of the memorial. “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine,” she said, quoting a gospel hymn,
Then, Wynonna said that she would be going on the 11-date national tour that she and her mother had previously announced.

Seventeen years after Jamey Johnson made his Grand Ole Opry debut, the country singer was asked to join the Nashville institution with a surprise invitation during Saturday’s showcase.
After performing alongside Opry member Bill Anderson, Johnson was informed by Anderson that “Opry management told me to tell you that this is going to be your last guest appearance.” Johnson responded, “I’ve been kicked out of a whole lot of places in my life.”
Anderson then informed Johnson, “The next time you appear on this stage you will be...

The Bradshaw Bunch's very own Rachel Bradshaw just released an album! Her debut self-titled EP dropped on Friday, Jan. 7 and features six songs written solely by Rachel, in addition to a collaboration with Grammy-nominated country star Jamey Johnson on a cover of Townes Van Zandt's "If I Needed You." A music video for the song will also be released this month. The inspiration for the music—which dives into all aspects of love and relationships—came to the singer-songwriter during the first few months of quarantine, which she spent with her dad Terry Bradshaw and the rest of her family. "This record holds a very special place in my heart," Rachel...

The program will include music from the day and videos that tell the stories of New England farmers. Farm Aid 2021 is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25, at Xfinity Theatre in Harford, Connecticut.
“Connecticut has embraced Farm Aid again, and we are thrilled to return to live music, especially after such a difficult year. We’re grateful for the opportunity to gather with people across the Northeast who value the power of music, appreciate delicious family farm food and — most of all — support family farmers,” said Carolyn Mugar, executive director of Farm Aid. “We are excited to partner with Circle this year to bring the Farm Aid festival to television for those not able to join us in person.”

Farm Aid is returning on September 25th with an all-day show at Hartford, Connecticut’s 30,000-seat Xfinity Theatre, but board member Neil Young announced last week that he won’t be there.
“All you people who can’t go to a concert because you still don’t feel safe, I stand with you,” he wrote in a letter to fans. “I don’t want you to see me playing and think it’s safe now. I don’t want to play until you feel safe, and it is indeed, safe.

Bootsy Collins has tapped G-funk super-producer FredWreck for a new remix of his Power of One track, “Bewise.”
FredWreck’s remix offers a streamlined take on the original, boosting the bubbling bass and letting the slick drums cruise beneath verses delivered by Robert “Bewise” Harding. “I called on one of my West Coast G-Funk Dog FredWreck to ensure that G-Funk would be infused with P-Funk so that we could continue to Funk Up the World with a Purpose,” Bootsy said in a statement.

Blackberry Smoke lean way into their country side on the twangy “Lonesome for a Livin’,” a collaboration with Jamey Johnson that appears on the Southern-rock band’s new album, You Hear Georgia.
Written by Blackberry Smoke singer Charlie Starr and Johnson, “Lonesome for a Livin'” is traditional country weeper, accented by pedal steel and crisp Telecaster. “I put quite a few tears into quite a few beers,” Starr sings in the first verse, teeing up a chorus that equates being blue with one’s profession. “You could say I was...

We’ve had three presidents and two popes since Jamey Johnson last released an album of original songs. The double-lp The Guitar Song arrived in 2010, just two years after Johnson’s breakout record That Lonesome Song shattered Nashville’s glossy façade with a return to rough-and-tumble outlaw songwriting and production. But the Alabama native has been in no rush to release a proper follow-up, choosing instead to pay tribute to songwriting heroes like Hank Cochran with the 2012 covers album Living for a Song and put out a surprisingly tender holiday...

There’s an uncharacteristic quaver in Jamey Johnson’s baritone when talking about the last song he ever wrote with Jason “Rowdy” Cope, his longtime friend and bandmate.
That song, “All of Your Stones,” ended up becoming the title track of the new album by Cope’s band the Steel Woods. Released last week, the LP is an unexpected tribute to the Southern-rock group’s lead guitarist: Cope died from complications related to diabetes in January. He was only 42.

The Steel Woods have announced their third album, All of Your Stones, a record that arrives as unplanned eulogy to the Southern rock band’s co-founder Jason “Rowdy” Cope. The guitarist and songwriter died in January at 42.
Ahead of the LP’s May 14th release, the surviving members of singer Wes Bayliss, bassist Johnny Stanton, and drummer Isaac Senty posted the title track on Thursday. Cope co-wrote “All of Your Stones” with Bayliss and Jamey Johnson, and it stands as an inspirational song for overcoming criticism and hate and transforming it into something beneficial.

“You hear Georgia when I open my mouth/don’t make no difference what I’m talking about,” Charlie Starr sings in the very first line of Blackberry Smoke’s new song “You Hear Georgia,” laying bare the focus of the group’s new album — an ode to their home state also titled You Hear Georgia.
Due May 28th, the LP teams the rock, country, and all-around Southern band with producer Dave Cobb, a fellow Georgian and the curator of RCA Studio A in Nashville, where You Hear Georgia was recorded live.

In 1984, Willie Nelson and Julio Iglesias teamed up for a duet that bridged country music with Latin balladry: “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before,” recorded for Iglesias’ album 1100 Bel Air Place became a hit on the country, Spanish, and all-genre charts, and a milestone in Nelson’s long list of collaborations.
For the latest edition of his Quarantunes series, the Mavericks’ singer Raul Malo revisits “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before” with Jamey Johnson, a frequent collaborator of Nelson’s, handling the Red Headed Stranger’s parts.

A few nights ago, Tanya Tucker was listening to Apple Music at her Texas ranch. She heard songs by her favorite singers including Nina Simone, Gordon Lightfoot, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson — and then she heard herself. The song was “Mustang Ridge,” from her 2019 album While I’m Livin’, produced by Brandi Carlile and Shooter Jennings.
“I thought, ‘You know what? I’m so much better now,'” says Tucker, who turned 62 in October. “I feel like I sing better, I sound better. I don’t know, I guess the stars lined up again for me.

The news has already been grim for the 2021 concert scene just one month into the new year. Glastonbury canceled. Coachella canceled. Stagecoach canceled.
Next? SXSW, set for March 16-20, has already announced it’s going online. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival has been bumped to October from its traditional late April-early May dates.
The die-hards are still holding out hope for a summer that is expected to see many 2020 holdovers take to the road, including Guns N’ Roses, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Celine Dion, and Kiss. But there’s skepticism abounding that any of those shows will be able to launch on time, if at all. And given the age of some of the acts, it’s possible that any further delays may mean they will never tour again.

In February 2016, Jamey Johnson arrived at the Cash Cabin Studio in Hendersonville, Tennessee, to transform a Johnny Cash sketch into a full-fledged song. The result of that session arrives Thursday with the Rolling Stone Country premiere of “California Poem,” one of a number of new tracks on a deluxe edition of the album Forever Words. Originally released in 2018, the LP put Cash’s unfinished writings, poems, and lyrics into the hands of artists like Chris Cornell, Ruston Kelly, and Brad Paisley.
