Don’t despair about the end of another non-existent British summer – UK TV always gets good when the weather turns, as the nights draw in and we all retreat indoors, finally getting sick of rainy barbecues and being chased by wasps in pub gardens.
This year is no different, so you can expect your 2023 autumn TV watchlist to include some compelling original dramas, from true crime shows covering some of the UK’s most shocking cases to enthralling depictions of real-life events, from the arrival of the Windrush generation to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Throw in some time-travelling crime-solving, mediaeval sword fights and a criminal gang on the run from a ruthless assassin, and we’ll be enjoying our self-enforced hibernation in front of the telly all the way until Christmas. Here’s what’s coming up, in order of release date.

The past year has been full of major royal events. In June 2022, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Platinum Jubilee to mark 70 years on the throne. Then, in September, the royals gathered once more for Queen Elizabeth’s funeral — effectively allowing King Charles to take the throne.
On May 6, King Charles and Queen Camilla were officially coronated; thousands gathered outside of Buckingham Palace, while millions watched on television. But one royal commentator said the king and queen looked “tired” and “spaced out” — perhaps they aren’t fit to be king and queen for long.

In horror, the babysitter is typically the character who protects her young ward from madmen and other dangers, but Dorothy Mills completely subverts the concept; Agnès Merlet’s 2008 film sees a disturbed sitter as the main threat to a child’s safety. This Irish chiller, however, upholds other genre traditions, including sending a city dweller to a small town where the people are ruled by their unusual customs, xenophobia and extreme faith. As the heedless outsider learns more about the infamous title character and the other residents, she quickly realizes this will not be an open-and-shut case of child abuse.
Dorothy Mills was written by Merlet and Juliette Sales, and this bleak story was originally set in Scotland before ultimately relocating to Ireland. This rural “fish out of water” mystery is in the vein of The Wicker Man, minus the folk-horror element, but there’s still something weird going on...

The pre-Oscar party circuit started rolling on Tuesday and culminated with the Saturday, Feb. 8, annual behemoth known as the Mptf “Night Before” party, where A-list stars gathered at Fox Studios to give back to their own, raising over $5.4 million to benefit the Motion Picture & Television Fund. From Leonardo DiCaprio, Mahershala Ali and Nicolas Cage to Viola Davis and Brie Larsen (to name a few), Oscar winners were everywhere.

The 15th annual Oscar Wilde Awards are around the corner and with honorees Norman Lear, Tig Notaro and Jenn Murray, the event promises to showcase the best of the U.S. and Ireland’s creative talents. Though unlike other black-tie events, the ceremony functions as a sort of “homecoming” for everyone attending — Irish and otherwise.
“It’s more like a house party, if you have a pretty big house,” says Trina Vargo, founder and president of the U.S.-Ireland Alliance. “It’s always nice to have a mix of people who are Irish, of Irish ancestry or someone we can make ‘honorary’ Irish. I once heard someone joke that there are two kinds of people: those who are Irish, and those who lack imagination. I like to believe that everyone at the Oscar Wilde Awards party has the great imagination that comes with great creativity — so everyone’s Irish for the night!

Oscar week has come early this year.
With the shortened awards season, the festivities kick off during the first days of February. Voting closed on Feb. 4, so now it’s time to sit back, relax and enjoy some partying. From brunches, lunches and late-night dinner soirees, there’s plenty to do before the 92nd Academy Awards are handed out on Feb. 9 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
But the party doesn’t end when the winners are announced. There are plenty of post-Oscar parties to attend. Just make sure you’re on the list — no one wants to be seen getting rejected at the door.

Angelina Jolie is again up to her wicked ways in “Maleficent Mistress of Evil.” But for the Oscar winner, playing the Disney villain is about a lot more than winged costumes and horns.
“It reminds me and I hope others that there’s a part of us that is just unbridled. We just have to be who we are. We can’t be less than what we are. We can’t be less honest. We can’t be less fierce,” Jolie told Variety. “We have to find ourselves and be free with it and be okay with it.”
Horn-wearing fans and reporters alike clamored to get close to the star on the red carpet outside the El Capitan Theatre on Monday night as Jolie reflected on how she relates to the character’s latest dilemma — parenting young adult Aurora (played by Elle Fanning).

Casting on Disney’s Maleficent 2 continues full steam ahead today, as Variety brings word that Jenn Murray, who you may know from her role as Chastity Barebone in Warner Bros.’ Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, has climbed on board the sequel. Further details weren’t disclosed at the time of writing, but should a deal place, she’ll be just the latest headline-worthy addition to the blockbuster.
The other week, for instance, we told you that Harris Dickinson (Trust) had signed on to play the prince – presumably at the expense of Brenton Thwaites, who’s now fully committed to the live-action Titans series, which is heading to WB’s newly-unveiled DC Universe.
Circling back to Maleficent 2, though, and we know that Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning are both expected to return for more fantasy-fuelled hijinks, with newcomer Ed Skrein (Deadpool) attached to one of the sequel...

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” actress Jenn Murray is joining the cast of “Maleficent 2” starring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning, sources tell Variety.
Michelle Pfeiffer, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Ed Skrein are also on board to star. “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” helmer Joachim Ronning is set to direct.
Joe Roth is producing the film, with Jez Butterworth and Linda Woolverton penning the latest script. Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster wrote the most recent draft.
It is not clear where this film will pick up following the first movie, which was based on the fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty.” The original story centered on an evil fairy who cursed an infant princess to eternal sleep, only to realize the young girl was the only one who could save the kingdom from its dangerous ruler. “Maleficent” broke several box office records on its way to making $758.5 million worldwide.

Warner Bros. has released nine new clips from their highly anticipated film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. What I like about watching film clips is that they give you a better sense of what the film will really be like than a trailer does. You get to see full scenes play out. All the clips are a lot of fun and they offer us some more insight into these characters and this magical world filled with fascinating creatures.
I also included a video featuring seven minutes of behind-the-scenes B-roll footage, which is always cool to watch.
The story opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case,...

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them takes us to a new era in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, decades before Harry Potter and half a world away.
Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”) stars in the central role of Magizoologist Newt Scamander, under the direction of David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” blockbusters.
There are growing dangers in the wizarding world of 1926 New York. Something mysterious is leaving a path of destruction in the streets, threatening to expose the wizarding community to the Second Salemers, a fanatical faction of No-Majs (American for Muggles) bent on eradicating them. And the powerful, dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, after wreaking havoc in Europe, has slipped away…and is now nowhere to be found.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them looks like it's going to be an incredibly entertaining film. I'm a huge fan of the Harry Potter franchise, and it's so cool that we are going to explore the story of Newt Scamander in 1920s America. That's exciting!

So many goodies in the cinemas candy store this upcoming Awards Season! Oh,boy, oh boy.
It’s “Good Movie Season” when we get Hollywood heavy-hitters (both top popcorn entertainment and Oscar wannabees), and the best of the film festival circuit, most recently from Toronto. Many films will have an awards qualifying run in 2016 and open officially in 2017.
While we have not seen some of these (although we have seen some trailers), some movies are sure to disappoint. That said, here is Wamg’s list of highly-anticipated films, both big blockbuster entertainment and seriously meaty cinema.

Doctor Strange – Nov. 4
The Sherlock supreme becomes the sorcerer supreme as one of the founding Marvel comics heroes finally arrives in the Marvel “movie-verse”.
While other Marvel Studios flicks have explored the worlds of hi-tech, Norse mythology, and space opera, director Scott Derrickson guides us through the realms of magic.

As we get closer to the mid-November release, we finally get a truly in-depth look at Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and it turns out that it was worth waiting for.
Anything related to the Harry Potter franchise really needs no further sell, but even though the book and film series is almost universally loved, some films are better than others, and certainly some books leave something to be desired. Moreover, some installments aim toward the simplistic, while others (especially when considering the films) look to broaden the scope of the dialog.
They’re all good, but that means something different in some cases. For example, Alfonso Cuarón’s Prisoner of Azkaban stands out among the film as the richest effort, which hoped to elevate the text and its themes.
If the trailer can be believed, it looks as though this one is moving in a similar direction,...

From Star Wars to Marvel, there’s a number of big blockbusters this year, but only one film will feature a return to a world we haven’t seen in over half-a-decade. Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, a spin-off of sorts in this magical world of Harry Potter, is actually scripted by J.K. Rowling herself and features the return of director David Yates (who helmed the final four films). This new film follows Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, the wizarding world’s preeminent magizoologist, who stops in New York following his travels to find and document magical creatures.
“I read the books and I then started watching the films and it was just like the most wonderful escapism,” Redmayne tells Collider. “Like every year or two, you got to go and sort of dive into this world and J.K. Rowling’s capacity to kind of, really sort of...

After showing it off to those lucky enough to be in Hall H at this year’s Comic-Con, Warner Bros. has released the brand new trailer for Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. It’s no secret that Warner Bros. is keen to launch a new, very likely massive franchise with this fall’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – and who can blame them? The Harry Potter series is one of the biggest cinematic cash cows ever, and with supposedly certain tentpoles like Jupiter Ascending, Pan, In the Heart of the Sea, and even Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice coming up unexpectedly short at the box office, the studio is ready for a sure thing.
Recently, at the premiere of one of those aforementioned wobbly blockbusters (The Legend of Tarzan), it became clear that J.K. Rowling is equally committed to fleshing out Fantastic Beasts. According to director David Yates, who’s directing the first installment and potentially stepping into the director’s chair for follow-ups, the bestselling author has already written a script for the first sequel.
“She’s done the first one.

The 'Harry Potter' spin-off feature Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them is fast approaching this Fall and is set years before we all knew anything about Hogwarts. Now during the promo rounds for The Legend Of Tarzan director David Yates revealed to Gs News that the script for the second film of Fantastic Beasts has already been written by author J.K. Rowling and it sounds like the plan is to do three films.
Here’s what Yates said about Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them:

No one quite has ownership of them quite yet, in terms of having a relationship with the material, other than the relationship they'll have with the movie when it comes out. Film comedies packed witty, biting humor and whip-smart dialog are pretty rare these days. So Love & Friendship, director Whit Stillman’s screen adaptation of Jane Austen’s lesser-known early short novel “Lady Susan,” is particularly welcome. With Kate Beckinsale shinning in the lead role as clever, ruthless Lady Susan, the witty comedy is even more delicious.
Love & Friendship is pure fun, a brilliant comedy filled with laugh-out-loud moments and terrific ensemble performances by a largely British cast, making it entertaining even for those who are not big fans of Jane Austen or costume films.
Unlike other more familiar Austen works, Love & Friendship is more comedy than romance, although there is some of that too. The story might be described as a comedy of manners but that label makes this very funny film sound more tame than it really is. The story is set in the 1790s, a little earlier than most Austen stories,...

Daniel Radcliffe and co. may be done with the world of Harry Potter, but Warner Bros. certainly is not. Coming this fall is Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, a spin-off of sorts in this magical world. Scripted by J.K. A new trailer has now arrived, which still doesn’t give away much of the story, but does a swell job teasing the magical elements to be had, from and transportive suitcase to a New York City full of surprises. Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. The world of "Harry Potter" expands with the upcoming spinoff series "Fantastic Beasts And Where The To Find Them," the first in a new trilogy, with longtime franchise helmer David Yates directing. But as fans of the series have grown older, it would seem this new chapter will be more mature as well. " 'Fantastic Beasts' is very much in the spirit of the 'Potter' books but it’s not filled with young children and their issues. I wouldn’t say it’s ‘dark’ but, as with all of Jo [Rowling]’s work, it’s not soft. There is material in all of the books that has a truth about life. Here, there’s darkness within. But there are also these creatures, and an awful lot of humour and heart – which I think will appeal to young and old alike," Yates revealed to Total Film earlier this year. Starring Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston,...

Despite a three-movie takeover of the ’90s, Whit Stilman isn’t a name that offers much draw to those who weren’t around to fall in love with his comedies of manners.
Damsels in Distress, despite casting Greta Gerwig and Adam Brody (and being as good as his other films), couldn’t manage to pull in audiences the way the rest of the films did.
Now Stilman is back again, and he’s offering up Jane Austen this time around. In a perfect blend of styles and sensibilities, Stilman directs and wrote the screenplay based on one of Austen’s less-appreciated works, Lady Susan.
Kate Beckinsale has never looked more impressive, and Chloë Sevigny, while she doesn’t have a lot of chance to show off in the trailer, has shown that this is right in her wheelhouse. Plus, the trailer gives you the chance to catch a glimpse of the supporting cast members,...

Perfectly timed with the impending release of three of his greatest films on a Criterion set, we’ll be getting a new feature from Whit Stillman this summer. Love & Friendship, based on Jane Austen’s unfinished novella “Lady Susan” stars Kate Beckinsale and Chloe Sevigny, and today we have the first trailer ahead of an Amazon/Roadside Attractions release.
Naming it one of the best films of Sundance, we said, “Master of poisonous tongues and vicious schemes in the world of the rich and the poor, Love & Friendship is perhaps writer/director Whit Stillman‘s most potent mix of comedy and social commentary. He’s got Jane Austen to thank, whose novella ‘Lady Susan’ serves as the inspiration for this tale of Lady Susan Vernon (a pitch-perfect Kate Beckinsale), a widow with a flirtatious reputation, determined to well re-marry well at whatever the cost. Often laugh-out-loud funny and downright mean at the same time,...

J.K. Rowling is taking fans back to the world of Harry Potter in Warner Bros. latest project, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. She wrote the script for the film, which is being directed by David Yates. The movie is going to introduce us to a ton of new characters that existed in America in the 1920s, years before the events of Harry Potter.
The story centers on Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a British magizoologist who travels to New York City with a case full of magical creatures. The creatures in that case end up escaping, and that's what sparks the adventure.
During the Celebration of Harry Potter 2016 in Orlando, Florida, a behind the scenes featurette was released that offers up some footage and additional information from the film that fans are going to want to see. It also includes interviews with members of the cast and crew.
