- Sings as a tenor and plays guitar. Was the front man for the garage band, Scattered, in high school as well as his Youth Worship team.

- A classic movie buff, has literally seen hundreds of movies from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. His favorites include Captains Courageous (1937), Casablanca (1942), and On the Waterfront (1954).
- Has read the complete works of William Shakespeare, Edgar Allen Poe, and H.P. Lovecraft.
- Can recite all the presidents of the united states in 15 seconds.
- Is an avid reader of classic literature and poetry.
- Is a life long, die hard, pro wrestling fan. Attended Wrestlemania 32 in Dallas in 2016.
- His great, great, great grandfather, Britt Dawson, fought in the Texas Revolution at the Battle of San Jacinto. Britt's father, Dread Dawson, fought in the War of 1812, and Dread's father, Britt Dawson the 1st, fought in the American Revolution.
- Once met Chuck Norris on the set of Walker, Texas Ranger, and shook his hand. This is probably why Matt's right hand is now impervious to all pain and can chop through steel bars.
- Favorite show is The Chosen (2017).
- Enjoys playing football, golf, bowling, and shooting pool. Manages to be terrible at all four.
- Loves doing musical theater even though he has never had any formal training in singing or dance. The highlight of his musical career was appearing in Gypsy, where he got to do a dance routine decked out in a full tuxedo, top hat, and cane.
- In 2020, he was a founding member of Lift Fellowship Church in Denton, TX, where he continues to serve on the church council and preach from time to time.
- Is very proud of his Scottish ancestry. Members of the Dickson clan in Scotland fought alongside William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.
- To prepare for the role of Sean in The Dealer (2007), Matt lost zero pounds in order to portray a character who weighed exactly as much as him.
