Due to their romance and the controversy surrounding it, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears will always be associated with each other. Fans can debate which singer had the more significant impact on popular culture, but the Billboard Hot 100 tells a more objective story. While both Timberlake and Spears were massively popular, one (arguably) gave us more No. 1 singles.
Justin Timberlake inspired a horrible toilet video and Britney Spears didn’t
So far, Timberlake has produced five Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits. The songs in question are “Can’t Stop the Feeling!,” “SexyBack,” “My Love,” “Give It To Me,” and “What Goes Around…/…Comes Around.” Each of those tunes were critically acclaimed, with “SexyBack” standing as Timberlake’s signature song.
The real question is whether or not any of those tracks became influential. All of them (except “Can’t Stop the Feeling!”) helped make electro-r&b the defining sound of the 2000s.

A new trailer dropped for the sequel to 2022's Smile, and it features an entirely new cast. However, the survivor from the first movie, Kyle Gallner is listed in the cast. The new preview features Naomi Scott as a Lady Gaga-type entertainer, Skye Riley who is experiencing terrifying events and insane smiles. The fall release is many months away (October 18) but the marketing team is already hard at work pushing the new movie and positioning the on-screen pop sensation as a real pop star and a music single.

Warner Bros brought twin tornadoes to CineEurope today, showing off an extended new look at the Daisy Edgar-Jones/Glen Powell starrer Twisters which the studio is releasing internationally. From Lee Isaac Chung, the action thriller starts overseas rollout on July 17 and storms into domestic cinemas via Universal on July 19.
Bookending the Warner Bros presentation was a brand new trailer for Todd Phillips’ highly anticipated sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. We previously got a first look at the first trailer during April’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas. No word on when the one shown today in Barcelona will drop online. The film releases overseas on October 2 and domestically on October4.

Pop star horror is on trend in Hollywood this year. Paramount Pictures has dropped a trailer for Smile 2, which centers on a “global pop sensation” played by Naomi Scott who begins to experience terrifying events while on tour.
In the clip, Scott embodies singer Skye Riley, a Lady Gaga-like star whose life behind the scenes takes a horrifying turn when someone from her past (Lukas Gage) appears and, well, smiles. The trailer includes Skye Riley’s fictional single, “Blood on White Satin,” which Scott performed for the film.

Katy Perry has announced that she’s putting out a new song called “Woman’s World.” She’s not the first pop star to use that provocative phrase in her music. Here’s a look at Perry’s interesting relationship with feminism.
Katy Perry’s new song will have the same name as a Cher track
Perry has written many songs about empowerment, the most famous being “Firework,” “Roar,” and “Part of Me.” None of those songs is about a specific group of people, the way that Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” is about the LGBTQ community or how Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman” is about women. However, it’s pretty easy to use the aforementioned Perry songs as female empowerment anthems, especially since the music videos for “Roar” and “Part of Me” have girl power storylines.
Perry seems to be taking this theme to its ultimate conclusion with her upcoming single.

Jim Jones and Jonestown have been portrayed throughout popular culture, including music. One of Lana Del Rey’s songs might have some allusions to Jones and the Jonestown massacre. Regardless, Del Rey was in a dark mindset when she wrote it.
The title song of Lana Del Rey’s ‘Ultraviolence’ seems like it’s about Jim Jones and Jonestown
Del Rey introduced herself to millions with her glossy baroque album Born to Die. Her follow-up, Ultraviolence, went in a completely different direction, with a guitar-heavy classic rock vibe. However, Del Rey’s focus on disturbing themes remained unchanged.
The title track of “Ultraviolence” describes Del Rey’s relationship with a man named Jim. She calls Jim her “cult leader.” The tune also has multiple references to poison. Considering Del Rey littered her songs with references to the past, it wouldn’t be a big surprise. For example, she mentioned another cult leader,...

At the Bentonville Film Festival this weekend, the diversity-minded event’s founder and chair Geena Davis spoke about the legacy of her 1991 feminist masterstroke Thelma & Louise, while insisting that remake-happy Hollywood had better keep its hands off this one because updating the story would be “pointless.”
“Well, it must never be remade,” the Oscar winner told IndieWire in an interview at the Arkansas festival. “I mean, it’s 30-something years later, and it holds up more than others. I’m not saying this because I’m in it, but it really holds up. And there’s no need to revisit it. What would be the point? In my opinion.”

Latency star Alexis Ren knows full well the perception that comes with a social media star making the jump to acting. It provokes the same skeptics that countless athletes, musicians and professional wrestlers had to endure when they first embarked on their own film and television careers in decades past. But, by keeping an open mind, we now have a long list of crossover performers that we’ll forever embrace on the big and small screen. In Ren’s case, she has the utmost respect for the craft of acting, so she started educating herself back in 2018, all in an effort to earn the same kind of acceptance that Mark Wahlberg, Lady Gaga and Dave Bautista once sought and received from the audience.
However, the news didn’t go over well at first with Ren’s sprawling social media following of 25-plus million people.

Even Madonna‘s lesser albums have fantastic songs. During the 2000s, the “Like a Virgin” singer released one of the most embarrassing records of her career. It still includes an incredible tune. The track in question borrows some elements from an earlier Madonna hit to create something that feels both retro and fresh at the same time.
1 of Madonna’s best songs is a desperate ‘Like a Prayer’
In 2003, Madonna released the techno/folk album American Life, her response to the Iraq War. The album includes an infamous rap about soy lattes, a song where Madonna calls herself “stupid” over and over, and a sour grapes disavowal of the film industry. It’s an overcooked mess, however any overcooked mess is going to have its moments.
The highlight of American Life is a gospel ballad called “Nothing Fails.” Madonna previously delved into gospel music with “Like a Prayer.” While “Like a Prayer” was ecstatic,...

Madonna‘s “Don’t Tell Me” is not one of the more famous tunes in the Queen of Pop’s catalog. Sure, it was a hit but it wasn’t “Like a Virgin.” Despite this, “Don’t Tell Me” was way ahead of the curve in many regards. Several pop stars from the 2010s and 2020s owe a lot to it.
Madonna’s ‘Don’t Tell Me’ paved the way for a new genre
Like many great Madonna songs, “Don’t Tell Me” is deceptively simple upon the first listen. The tune features some acoustic country/folk strumming combined with electronic beats. It’s a simple combination, but no one had really done it before in popular music. Country and folk were seen as diametrically opposed to electronica, with the latter being overall more polished and less authentic.
However, the juxtaposition of styles paved the way for the modern genre of folktronica.

In the pantheon of great Hollywood films with a major feminist bite, the Geena Davis- and Susan Sarandon-starring “Thelma & Louise” remains the contemporary standard-bearer. The Callie Khouri-penned MGM crime drama about two best friends on the run (who find themselves and their knack for taking bad men down a peg in the process) was a commercial and critical smash when it hit theaters in May 1991.
With a splashy Cannes premiere to launch it, the film made over $45 million at the box office (in 1991 dollars and on a $16.5 million budget) and went on to pick up six Oscar nominations, with a Best Original Screenplay win for first-time writer Khouri.
And, yes, it was directed by a man. That Ridley Scott was at the helm of this feminist masterpiece still surprises some — or at least those not totally familiar with the filmmaker’s wide oeuvre. Even star Davis...

Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please” looks like a lot of crime movies but it doesn’t feel much like a Madonna music video. Regardless, the Material Girl still inspired the clip. Here’s a look at how Pamela Anderson, Jennifer Lopez, and Rihanna all play into this story.
Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Please Please Please’ was inspired by Madonna and Ben Affleck
The darkly humorous video for “Please Please Please” depicts Carpenter helping her boyfriend, Barry Keoghan, break out of jail. He then gets caught again. Like the tune itself, the music video is funny and melancholy. Some viewers will take it at face value, but it could be understood as an allegory for the relatable problem of making the same mistakes no matter how many times you should have learned your lesson.
The clip encapsulates Carpenter’s glamorous image and her trademark sense of humor. The music video was directed by Bardia Zeinali.

Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are on the verge of Egot status… that is, if Emmy voters nominate their song from “Only Murders in the Building” and it winds up winning three months from now.
Pasek and Paul — already Oscar winners for “La La Land” and Tony and Grammy winners for “Dear Evan Hansen” — could finally manage that feat with the witty comic patter song “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?,” sung by Steve Martin and co-written with fellow Tony and Grammy winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman for the third season of the Hulu comedy-drama.
They are among the many prominent songwriters who have entered songs in this year’s Emmy competition. Voting began Thursday, with approximately 550 members of the Television Academy music peer group eligible to vote in seven music categories. Voting ends June 24 and the nominations will be announced July 17.

A drag show takes a village, especially those featured in HBO’s docuseries “We’re Here.” Hair, makeup, song selection, choreography, lighting, props, Red Bull — there’s no shortage of things needed to help give life to the art form.
But it all starts with a connection between two people. In the Emmy-winning series, well-known drag queens work with marginalized people in U.S. towns that don’t often embrace inclusivity. The queens help participants build a drag persona. Then, as a final send-off, the participants perform for their community, celebrating what often isolates them.
“It always comes down to the drag mom and the drag kid putting their heads together and figuring out what feels right and how to pull it off with the tools we have,” says Season 4 co-host Sasha Velour. “Every single number that we did on the show was a totally new process. It was like reinventing the wheel every time,...

Madonna named the five most iconic songs of her career. Three of the Material Girl‘s picks are correct. The other two are questionable at best.
1. ‘Like a Prayer’
During a 2015 interview with HuffPost, Madonna was asked to name her most iconic songs and the first she mentioned was “Like a Prayer.” Madonna’s career has been full of religious provocations and none was more sublime than “Like a Prayer.” On one level, the tune can be understood as a straightforward religious song. On the other hand, the track can be understood as a salacious pseudo-religious song about with some pretty strong innuendos. Regardless, it has one of the best instrumentals in the entire history of pop music.
“Like a Prayer” is part gospel, part funk, part pop, part rock, part ironic, and part sincere. In other words, it’s one-of-a-kind. Other pop artists like Lady Gaga and Lil Nas X...

Lady Gaga doesn't show off her swimsuit body too often, so it's of little surprise that Instagram goes positively wild when she does. In May 2021, the "Born This Way" hitmaker sizzled in a buns-out bikini photo, showing off her toned figure in a cheeky two-piece as she topped up her tan outdoors. Lounging around with her back to the camera, Gaga barely showed her face, although this didn't seem to deter her followers from begging for more similar content. The singer's photo has now topped 3.2 million likes, and one fan has even asked for "more like this."

Top 8 Simpsons Predictions That Came True. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Fox’s The Simpsons has garnered a reputation for predicting the future. The comedy-drama, which ran for 35 seasons and consisted of 750+ episodes, truly managed to manifest moments in real-life events. 16 years ago, one of the episodes of The Simpsons predicted that Donald Trump would become US president one day, and we all know how it turned out.
The show’s major characters, Homer, Marga, Lisa, Bart, and Maggie, eerily presented what seemed like farfetched scenarios at the time. While the writers correctly predicted several events years in advance, the show has captured viewers’ fascination. As the 35th season of The Simpsons recently concluded, some recent wild storylines will inevitably join the uncanny predictions, perhaps in the coming 15-20 years. Lady Gaga’s 2008 breakthrough “The Fame” was one of the most successful debut albums in recent history, not only a hot seller, but a critically praised record at that. Its impact could be measured in a million ways, but on its 15th anniversary the album’s Grammy success comes to mind.
SEEGrammys flashback: What happened to these artists After they won Album of the Year?

Jon Bon Jovi is apparently open to the idea of Richie Sambora returning to rock with Bon Jovi again over 11 years after he originally left the band in the middle of a tour. The thing is, whether he returns or not depends on one thing.
Jon Bon Jovi – Says Touring Is the Only Thing That Would Reunite the Band With Richie Sambora
Just so you know, there is no bad blood between Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, and though it’s been 11 years since the pair enjoyed a close working relationship, the rocker still believes the band may get to rock with Richie one more time.
Sambora was Bon Jovi’s main guitarist before he departed the band in 2013. Since that time, Sambora and the band’s frontman, Jon Bon Jovi, have had limited communication, even though it is said that there wasn’t any lingering hatred between the two.

Madonna‘s “4 Minutes” is about having four minutes to save the world. If you thought that was weird, the Material Girl connected the song’s lyrics to environmentalism. That has to be one of the biggest stretches in the history of popular music. In addition, the Queen of Pop revealed what it was like to work on the song with Justin Timberlake.
Madonna’s ‘4 Minutes’ is about having fun while being an environmentalist
Many of Madonna’s hits revolve around normal pop song topics, such as love, sex, and dancing. Meanwhile, Madonna’s “4 Minutes” is about having only four minutes to save the world. That premise is so odd that it’s hard to take it at face value.
During a 2008 interview with MTV News, the Queen of Pop was asked about the meaning of “4 Minutes.” “Well, I don’t think it’s important to take it too literally,” she said.

Rock music is far from dead. Last year’s Grammy nominations proved that, with some of the leading acts in music being present in the rock categories. Alongside legends like The Rolling Stones and Metallica, the field was graced by the presence of Gen-z’s favorite artists, such as Boygenius, Arctic Monkeys and Olivia Rodrigo. So to find great rock music these days, you just have to pay attention. We are certainly paying attention this year, with a slew of buzzy releases already in the conversation to take home the gold come Grammy time.
One of the biggest stories in rock this season is the return of The Beatles with the single “Now and Then.” It’s unclear if the song will be competing in pop or in rock, but either way it’s for sure getting them a nomination. A music video made to their hit song “I’m...

How do we know what music is actually good? Many fans look to critics. Sure, some might label music journalism as irrelevant in assigning value to art, but the reality is, critics do at least partly contribute to the consensus on the quality of music. That’s why, whether it is during a civilized conversation or the most rabid Twitter stan war, an album’s Metacritic score typically comes up. So award show voters must take those top albums more into consideration than others, right? To be a big awards player, doesn’t your album need to be somewhat acclaimed?
Let’s take a look at the past three Grammy ceremonies as examples. Since these are ceremonies with no nomination review committees involved, the results are a more accurate, unfiltered reflection of what voters think. According to Metacritic, anything below 81 is not “universally acclaimed,” so that’s how I’ll sort it out.

Young Woman and the Sea is now out in theaters! Before its release, Daisy Ridley walked the red carpet at the biographical sports drama’s London premiere, looking sleek in a navy latex dress.
Ridley, who portrays competitive swimmer Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle in the movie, has been subtly embracing method dressing, wearing mostly blue outfits throughout the film’s promotional tour.

2024’s Venice Film Festival isn’t far away. Last year’s event was one that was slightly cut down due to the ongoing strikes that had befallen Hollywood and prevented a number of actors from attending for the promotion of their films. The line-up for films out of competition featured such big names as Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, William Friedkin, Richard Linklater and Roman Polanski.

Though we’re still months away from seeing Todd Philips’ highly anticipated sequel Joker: Folie À Deux, more and more details about the upcoming potential hit have been trickling in, teasing fans about how Joker’s storyline will unfold this time.
Philips’ Joker started his lone adventure through the madness of Gotham City back in 2019, but now he will get a pretty much expected company after finding his true soulmate in Arkham Asylum therapist Harleen Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn.
