“Euphoria” star Austin Abrams believes his days of playing high school kids are behind him.
In an interview with IndieWire at the 2024 Sarasota Film Festival about his new fraternity hazing drama “The Line” from director Ethan Berger, Abrams, now 27, said that while he might still get some parts like that in “The Line” that place him in college, it’d be a stretch to see him playing a high schooler again.
“I can’t really do it anymore,” he told IndieWire of playing such a younger character. “Yeah, definitely. It’s just like at this point, I’m not really a service to the project anymore. I mean, I just can’t do that. College, kind of. I don’t really feel like that. But yeah.”

You might think “The Line” is simply a film about illuminating the bad behavior of college fraternities and their dangerous hazing practices. You’d be wrong. Yes, that is the subject matter in question, but in the hands of first-time feature director Ethan Berger it’s a richly drawn, slow-burn character study that suddenly becomes a breathless thriller.
There’s a pivotal scene that occurs almost two-thirds of the way into the movie that marks the moment that “The Line” becomes one of the great suspense movies in some time. It’s a hazing scene in which the worst possible traits of Greek Life pledging are actually just a cover for a battle of wills between two guys who hate each other: Frat brother Mitch (Bo Mitchell) and pledge Gettys (Austin Abrams). Mitch is all “Animal House” bluster but deeply insecure — with a wealthy businessman father played by an imposing...

“Euphoria” Season 3 has been delayed at HBO.
“HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season,” an HBO spokesperson told Variety. “In the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.”
The scripts for Season 3 are still being written. The news comes after a report that the show’s third season has been scrapped entirely.
Production on the show’s third season had long been delayed, in part due to the Hollywood strikes and the July 2023 death of Angus Cloud, who played local drug dealer Fez. The show has also launched most of its cast — including Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney and Hunter Schafer — into the upper echelon of Hollywood, making it harder to coordinate production schedules.
In November 2023, HBO confirmed that the show’s third season was expected to premiere in 2025, meaning there would be at least a three-year gap between seasons since...

It has been heavily rumored that The Sentry will be making his debut in the MCU sometime soon, most likely in the Thunderbolts film, currently due to release in 2025. Steven Yeun was previously in the running to play the character, before his exit was prompted due to scheduling issues. However, one Marvel theory suggests that the MCU might be going with a new version of the characters introduced in Marvel comics.
Sentry in Marvel Comics.
The theory is based on certain rumors that the MCU will be changing the mythos of the Sentry, to make it more palatable to the mainstream audience. The theory states that Marvel will be going with the most recent run of the Sentry, where the power of hero the split six ways between 6 individuals after his demise, which then caused one of them, Ryan Topper, to go on a rampage to claim the powers from the other Sentries.

Yaya (played by Camryn Jones) just wants to walk to school with her boyfriend. Living on the South Side of Chicago in a house overflowing with family members, the only thing that gets the exhausted teen out of bed every morning is knowing Dre (Travis Wolfe Jr.) will be waiting on her stoop. The only issue: her protective brother, Mouse (Victor Musoni), doesn’t approve. He thinks her friends aren’t a good influence — they show up late to school too often, eat too much junk food, and don’t pay enough attention to their surroundings. Mouse, clearly, just wants his little sister to be safe, get good grades, and live a better life, but by intimidating Dre, he’s unwittingly snuffing out her one spark of joy — joy that manifests itself via her favorite hobby: dance.

Mark Duplass and producing partner Mel Eslyn are continuing their Sundance reign with the debut of series “Penelope.”
The entirely independently financed and produced series follows the titular Penelope (Megan Stott), a teen who feels more connected with nature than she does her own family. As Penelope escapes into the wilderness, she seeks to find herself in the coming-of-age indie drama.
Duplass and Eslyn co-created and co-wrote the series, which is seeking a distributor at the festival. CAA is handling sales. The Duplass Brothers formerly debuted adult animated series “Animals,” which premiered at 2016 Sundance in the early days of the festival expanding to include episodics.
The official synopsis reads: Feeling out of place in the modern world, 16-year-old Penelope (Stott) finds herself almost cosmically drawn to nature. With no plan in place, she leaves her family behind for the beguiling wilderness where she begins to establish a different kind of life for herself.

The highly-discussed ‘Thunderbolts’ MCU project, unveiled by Kevin Feige in September, solidified its cast with David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, and Olga Kurylenko reprising their roles. Notably, Yelena Belova was confirmed to join the Thunderbolts team.
Initially, Steven Yeun was set to portray Sentry, a choice that faced criticism due to perceived disparities with the character’s comic book appearance. After Yeun withdrew, attributing it to post-SAG-AFTRA strike scheduling conflicts, rumors circulated that Austin Abrams might step into the role. Abrams, recognized for his performances in ‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘Euphoria,’ and various films, was purportedly considered for the complex character of Robert Reynolds.

If there’s one upcoming MCU project that has been talked about in recent times, it’s ‘Thunderbolts.’ In September Kevin Feige announced that David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, and Olga Kurylenko would be reprising their roles as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Ava Starr/Ghost, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, John Walker/U.S. Agent, and Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, respectively, in the film. As we welcome in the New Year, we can reveal our annual (non-exhaustive) list of U.S. and international movies we think could grace the festival circuit in 2024. We’ve stuck to our criteria that the project must already be in production and have not already been announced for a festival. More than 70% of our selections last year went on to debut at a major festival. Those that didn’t were largely delayed by the strike or are still in post-production. If the titles below make the cut, it will be a thrilling year on the festival circuit once again.

Nearly three and a half years have gone by since it was announced that director André Øvredal and producer Guillermo del Toro were re-teaming for a sequel to their cinematic adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series of books. A few months ago, Øvredal confirmed that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 was still in the works and a script has been written, the project had just been slowed down by the pandemic, the making of his Dracula movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and this year’s Hollywood strikes. But now Collider has shared a quote from the producers that indicates there might be some kind of trouble behind the scenes…
The screenplay for Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 has been written by the first film’s writers Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman, working from a story crafted by del Toro.

“Euphoria” Season 3 has been slated for 2025, HBO boss Casey Bloys announced at a press event Thursday morning.
The Sam Levinson series’ title was shown in a sizzle reel that said “Coming in 2025” alongside “The Last of Us” Season 2, “The White Lotus” Season 3 and the “It” prequel series “Welcome to Derry.”
Not much else has been revealed about the upcoming third season of “Euphoria,” except for Levinson teasing in August that he views the next batch of episodes as a “film noir.” The showrunner said that through the eyes of Zendaya’s Rue, he will “explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world.”
“Euphoria” stars Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Maude Apatow, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Angus Cloud, Barbie Ferreira and Dominic Fike as troubled high schoolers caught up in a world of drugs, love and crime.
Eric Dane, Storm Reid, Colman Domingo, Javon Walton, Austin Abrams and Nika King also star.

The Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:
Campfire tales. Town legends. Ghost stories. Whatever you want to call them, they exist as a way to tell stories from one generation to the next. They can be told at summer camp, at sleepovers, or by grandpa when he’s had an extra J & B and is feeling squirrely. They can be urban legends, embellished stories based in fact, or even just a made-up tale to illicit fright from its listeners. Before his death at age 25 in late July, Angus Cloud — known for playing Fezco on the hit HBO series Euphoria for two seasons — finished filming a star turn in writer-director Dan Brown’s thriller Your Lucky Day.
The trailer for Brown’s lotto-win hostage flick, which dropped on Friday, reveals Cloud as Sterling, a petty criminal-turned-hostage taker in one of his final film performances. In Your Lucky Day, a dispute over a $156 million winning Megaball Jackpot lottery ticket has a masked and hooded Sterling launching a deadly hostage situation in a small convenience store on Christmas Eve that leads to a rookie cop being shot and the winning ticket holder killed by gunfire.

Triple-threat star Zendaya might have risen to fame for her work on the Disney Channel, but her acting in the HBO series Euphoria made her an “it girl.” While Zendaya is the primary character in a show full of interesting, detailed portrayals, Euphoria is probably best known for its scandalous plotlines and cutting-edge subject matter. The series has received numerous awards and honors, and recently, following the announcement of an upcoming third season, more fans are hopping on the Euphoria bandwagon than ever before. While little has been confirmed about the third season, what fans do know provides a tantalizing glimpse of what lies ahead.

Halle Bailey's solo era is finally here. After her praiseworthy leading role in Disney's "The Little Mermaid" live-action remake this past May, the younger half of Chloe x Halle released new music on her own on Aug. 4 with her debut solo single, "Angel."
The 23-year-old singer teased a short clip of the piano-backed track's music video on July 31, which shows nostalgic glimpses of herself from an infant to now. The full visual, directed by Wendy Morgan, shows the songstress in elegant scenes surrounded by water and dancers as she pours her heart out with lyrics like: "Black girl here, Black girl with the Black girl hair / Took a little sun kiss just to look like this / God-sent, you're an angel / Angel, angel, angel."

Zach Cregger, the director of last year’s surprise hit “Barbarian”, has assembled an impressive cast for his next project, a horror epic titled “Weapons”. The film, which was acquired by Warner Bros. and New Line in a fierce bidding war, will star Renate Reinsve, Pedro Pascal, Brian Tyree Henry, Tom Burke, Austin Abrams and June Diane Raphael.
Reinsve, who won acclaim for her performance in the Norwegian dramedy “Worst Person in the World”, landed the lead role after Elizabeth Olsen and Rooney Mara passed on it. The film is said to revolve around “witchcraft and missing children” and will be told through multiple and interrelated stories. The screenplay is reportedly very dense and could result in a three-hour runtime.

It’s hard not to think about Donna Tartt’s novel The Secret History while watching Ethan Berger’s feature debut, The Line. Richard Papen, the protagonist of Tartt’s crisp and propulsive novel, bears quite the resemblance to Tom (Alex Wolff), the main character of Berger’s compelling thriller. Like Richard, Tom is a scholarship student who finds himself cavorting with an elite segment of campus. The classic majors’ cabal, organized around the worship of a mysterious professor, is what pulled Richard in; Greek life, with its allure of fraternal fidelity and alumni access, is what bewitches Tom. Both characters are ashamed of their working-class roots and, in a futile attempt to fit in, mask and mock their pasts.
The Line follows Tom as he learns the same devastating lessons Richard did. Berger, who cowrote the screenplay with Alex Russek, telegraphs the tragedy early, which means we don’t...

There have been plenty of movies detailing life in a fraternity — Animal House being the crown jewel of all, no matter how outrageously funny. The newest entry in the genre, The Line, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival this weekend, is not trying to amuse on any level; a deadly serious take on college frat houses, it looks like it was ripped straight from the many headlines about hazing deaths and horrific goings-on at these places.
However, for at least its first half to first two thirds, this feature film debut for director Ethan Berger (who also co-wrote the script with Alex Russek) is aiming to entertain with a look at the fictional southern Kappa Nu Alpha fraternity in all its vile, sick, crass ugliness. If the goal was to make us hate these guys, the filmmakers succeed admirably. By the end I wanted see every last one of them...

Set within a typically raucous fraternity at a fictional college, Ethan Berger’s “The Line” foretells where it’s headed early on when the school administrator warns of repercussions if a hazing is performed. Consider Chekhov’s gun cocked from that point: Audiences can guess what awaits, though the lead-up to the inevitable is lively and compelling, while also affording a slew of rising actors a chance to display their talent.
Written by Berger and Alex Russek, “The Line” focuses on Tom (Alex Wolff), a sophomore striving to overcome his impoverished background who believes that belonging to a fraternity is a chance for opportunities and connections. Things look promising when he’s picked by the fraternity’s president, Todd (Lewis Pullman), as a potential successor. He starts seeing an attractive fellow student (Halle Bailey). But trouble starts when a new pledge, Gettys (Austin Abrams), decides to make an enemy of Tom’s best friend,...

Men screaming songs together joyfully, the elation bursting forth from chapped lips, bloodshot eyes, camouflaged cheeks and the strength of brute force. That is how Ethan Berger’s “The Line” greets its audience, rip-raring and ready to go in the spirit of brotherhood, camaraderie, and community, the kind that can make or break a soul too delicate for the molding.
In this new look into the dedication to the fraternity lifestyle, tradition is warped and tainted into something treacherous and wrong—and much of that tonal excellence is achieved by Berger’s top-notch cast, an ensemble led by the enigmatic and skilled Alex Wolff.
“The Line” follows Wolff’s Tom, a Southern college student who takes the foundations of brotherhood seriously within his frat, Kappa nu Alpha, or as they affectionately call it: KnA. With that comes the promise of social equity and connections throughout their post-college life, so it...

“The Line” takes a hard, lean look at a crisis plaguing headlines every year: the horrors behind the scenes of hazing at college fraternities.
In the stylish and convincingly acted drama premiering this week out of Tribeca Festival’s Spotlight Narrative lineup, “Hereditary” star and filmmaker himself Alex Wolff plays Tom, a devoted indoctrinee of a fictional fraternity happy to play along with his brotherhood’s disturbing hazing practices and its culture of foundationally toxic masculinity. Greek Row is notorious for its horrifying initiation tactics, and director/co-writer Ethan Berger (who penned the script with Alex Russek) doesn’t shy away from the casual racism, sexism, homophobia, and trauma playing out on universities’ never-too-far outskirts.

From “Saved!” to “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” Sundance movies tend to paint fundamentalist Christians as severe, cult-like zealots, hellbent on brainwashing the next generation. While such portrayals can certainly be cathartic for those scarred by conservative upbringings, it’s a refreshing change to see this milieu treated with the level of nuance that Laurel Parmet brings to “The Starling Girl.”
Set in a small Kentucky town where morality is strictly enforced, Parmet’s promising, evenhanded debut focuses on a religious teen (“Little Women” star Eliza Scanlen) who’s never had reason to question her faith, until a crush on her handsome youth pastor (Lewis Pullman) awakens her sexuality and scandalizes the community. For the adults in this repressive rural enclave, organized religion seems to provide the discipline and structure they seek. But for 17-year-old Jem Starling, their values are starting feel like a straitjacket.

Writer-director Laurel Parmet’s The Starling Girl quickly draws us into the remote Kentucky community at its center, a place small enough that everyone knows everyone else. Wide-open spaces stretch out from it in all directions and keep the rest of the world at bay. Most importantly, it’s a place where all of life revolves around the church.
In this stifling place, every single move a person makes doesn’t escape Old Testament judgment. One early scene even shows us a teenager being forced to confess to the sin of watching pornography in front of the entire congregation so that they might forgive him.
Within this milieu, we meet 17-year-old Jem (Eliza Scanlen). At home, she’s forced to play the role of doting daughter, working tirelessly to care for her younger siblings. Her mother, Heidi (Wrenn Schmidt), watches her every move like a hawk, her face fixed in...
