Who watches the Watchmen? The Television Critics Association apparently.
Eerily prescient HBO miniseries Watchmen has won four 2020 TCA Awards, including Individual Achievement in Drama (for Regina King’s work), Outstanding New Program, Outstanding Achievement in Movie, Miniseries, or Special, and Program of the Year. This marks a clean sweep of the categories that Watchmen was nominated in and, due to the TCA Awards’ relatively short list of 13 categories, amounts to the show winning roughly 31% of all the awards. Not bad!
Watchmen’s TCA Awards dominance is reminiscent of another timely HBO miniseries success last year. Chernobyl snagged Outstanding Achievement in Movie, Miniseries, or Special at the TCA Awards before moving on to win three Emmys. A similar fate is likely in store for Watchmen during the 72nd Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 20.
Two other HBO series joined Watchmen in TCA Award recognition with Succession taking home Outstanding Achievement in Drama...

The Television Critics Association announced today the winners of the organization’s 36th Annual TCA Awards, honoring the best programs and performances from the 2019-2020 television season. HBO’s “Watchmen” indisputably swept the competition, winning four out of 11 total awards for new programming. Dan Levy and Pop TV’s beloved comedy “Schitt’s Creek” was the only other program to receive more than one accolade, with a total of two. With nods for “Succession” and “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” HBO came out ahead with six of the TCA’s top honors.
The winners were determined by votes cast by the TCA’s network of more than 250 professional TV critics and journalists in the United States and Canada.
In noting that “Watchmen” received the organization’s Program Of The Year award, a TCA announcement singled out the series “for taking the established mythos of the legendary ‘Watchmen’ graphic novel to new...

HBO’s Watchmen and Netflix’s Unbelievable led the field in the 36th annual Television Critics Association Awards nominations, netting four apiece.
HBO led all programmers in the nominations, which were announced Thursday, followed by Netflix with 10. (See the full list of nominees below.)
The TCA, a group of 200 journalists from the U.S. and Canada, opted to move forward with the awards despite canceling the TCA Summer Press Tour in May due to Covid-19. A week-long vestige of the usual tour panels will be convened online, though not by the TCA, in August.
The TCA honors range across a wide spectrum of programing, including news and information, youth, reality, drama, comedy, miniseries and sketch/variety shows. Winners will be announced later this summer.
While Netflix did not top the charts, streaming overall had a sizable presence in the field, with nods going to The Mandalorian and Encore! on Disney+,...

In the month since police killed George Floyd, the United States is finally reckoning in a very real way with how racial inequity is baked in to every level of society. As people take to the streets to protest violence and injustice against Black people, the news media has simultaneously been grappling with how to cover this seismic shift, and its own complicity in prioritizing white voices and audiences above all else. Media has the power to shape narratives, amplify viewpoints and ascribe importance. Every corner of this industry — even entertainment — needs to seriously reexamine its age-old routines and work to create new and more thoughtful ones that actively push against racist instincts.

The “Marshmallows” came out to a packed Paramount Theatre for a conversation with Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas and cast members Enrico Colantoni, Jason Dohring and Percy Daggs III. But before they stepped out on to the stage to talk about the revival on Hulu (all eight episodes will drop July 26 while Thomas revealed all three seasons will be available on July 1), the crowd squealed with delight when an exclusive clip was shown.
The clip brought us back to series setting in Neptune, California, with the witty banter between Veronica (Kristen Bell) and Keith (Colantoni) — with the ironic use of millennial slang. There was also a gratuitous shirtless Speedo scene with Logan (Dohring) emerging from the water with a surfboard, which made the audience drool. An exchange between Veronica and Logan is really racy — in other words, lots of sex talk. Needless to say, the generous scene was quite adult because,...
