ABC has officially pulled the plug on its once-promising new comedy series The Mayor. The series was unofficially canceled early this year when it was scheduled to return from hiatus, but the network pulled the remaining four episodes, airing Modern Family reruns in its Tuesday 9:30 Pm slot instead.
The Mayor was chosen as the only new ABC comedy series to launch in the fall and premiered to strong reviews, backed by a big marketing campaign and featuring a charismatic young star in Brandon Micheal Hall. But it struggled to establish a foothold Tuesday. Its fall finale drew 2.8 million viewers and a 0.8 in adults 18-49 (Live+Same Day).
The Mayor, from ABC Studios, was created by Jeremy Bronson. It centered on Courtney Rose (Hall), a hip-hop artist who runs for a mayor as a publicity stunt but scores a surprise win. Lea Michele, Bernard David Jones, Marcel Spears, Yvette Nicole Brown and David Spade co-starred.

The Mayor will not be returning to ABC's schedule in the near future.
The alphabet network has opted to pull the remaining episodes from the schedule in favor of airing reruns of Modern Family.
Modern Family's encore from earlier this week achieved higher numbers than The Mayor Season 1's average in the slot in the fall.
The news is a little bit surprising when you consider the fact that ABC ordered three backup scripts for the series back in November.
Despite so-so ratings, the series received solid reviews from critics, and some shows can get by on acclaim alone.
The Mayor focused on a rapper named Courtney Rose who runs for mayor and wins. Courtney had no intention of actually winning, but he thought the publicity would be good for his career.
The comedy started when the character won the election and became the mayor of Fort Grey.

When the governor comes to town, it’s time to get down to business.
In Et’s exclusive sneak peek from Tuesday’s episode of The Mayor, Courtney Rose (Brandon Micheal Hall) -- an aspiring rapper-turned-mayor of Fort Grey, California -- sits down with his trusty team to spitball ideas for the California governor’s impending visit.
Leading the charge are Jermaine Leforge (Bernard David Jones), Marcel Spears (T.K. Clifton) and Val Barella (Lea Michele), who all have pie-in-the-sky notions for how to “wow” the governor with their quaint town.

Last week, the situation for The Mayor TV show on ABC was dire enough that co-star Yvette Nicole Brown took to social media to rally/warn the fans that The Mayor was in danger of being cancelled. Now, instead of issuing a full season order, the Alphabet Network has ordered three additional scripts for season one of the sitcom. Remember, a script order does not guarantee that the studio will produce and the network will air those episodes and is sometimes used as a stop-gap measure, while a network figures out if a series is worth saving. An ABC comedy from creator Jeremy Bronson, The Mayor stars Brandon Micheal Hall, Lea Michele, Bernard David Jones, Marcel Spears, and Brown. After years of drudgery, hip-hop artist Courtney Rose (Hall) runs for office to boost his music career and accidentally wins the election. The first...

Stop me if you've heard this one. A new show kicks off with lackluster ratings, so the cast and/or crew try to rally fans online, so that it won't be cancelled. Yvette Nicole Brown, who knows all about TV series cancellations, co-stars on The Mayor TV show on ABC. The Community veteran took to social media over the weekend to remind viewers that if the sitcom doesn't draw more viewers (particularly those in Nielsen households), a second season renewal is unlikely. Nothing says comedy quite like a rap about cheddar chesse. In the pilot for ABC’s sitcom “The Mayor,” star Brandon Micheal Hall and former “Hamilton” star Daveed Diggs performed just such a freestyle — which you can see in an exclusive behind-the-scenes video that includes words from co-stars Yvette Nicole Brown, Marcel Spears and Bernard David Jones. The series follows Hall’s rapper Courtney Rose, who gets elected mayor in a surprise victory. Before he actually cared about doing the job well, he skipped out on a community cleanup event he organized to perform on stage with Daveed Diggs’ Mac Etcetera.

‘The Mayor’ Star Bernard David Jones Says the Series Is ‘What Our Community Needs Right Now’ (Video)
Although ABC’s new series “The Mayor” has some parallels with the 2016 election, star Bernard David Jones says that the outcomes couldn’t be any more different. “They’re completely different in the sense that as a result of the election, the people are coming together on our show,” Jones told TheWrap. “The people are saying, ‘Hey, you’re different, we need you,’ and that leader is saying, ‘Ok, I got you, so let’s figure out how we can make all of your situations better.’ And that’s a person that has a heart for the people.” Also Read:...

‘The Mayor’ Review: ‘Hamilton’ Alum’s Trump-Adjacent Political Sitcom Gets Off to an Inspiring Start
“Veep” is the best comedy on television, as attested by the 2017 Emmys and confirmed by IndieWire’s substantial critical authority, and its quickly approaching series finale will mark a great loss to television. The way in which David Mandel and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ sword-swinging satirical attack on our corrupt national leaders stabs and skewers every last power-hungry politician is a service of the utmost importance when anger is running high.
But in addition to a series that satisfies American bloodlust for the blowhards on Capital Hill, those same viewers need to believe in politicians. We need a show to encourage that belief, and the current climate — which can be described as tumultuous at best — only emphasizes said point.
Enter ABC’s “The Mayor,” a comedy built around inspiring characters who not only serve as the inverse to HBO’s emotionally deadened D.C. politicos, but who remind us there is still good in this world,...
